‘Kleks Academy’ Netflix Review: A Mishmash Of Many Stories And Steers Away From Originality
Image
There are hardly any films in the fantasy fiction genre that do not cater to children. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Harry Potter films, Enchanted, The Chronicles of Narnia, How to Train Your Dragon, The Golden Compass, Hugo, Dischanted, Aladdin, etc., are some of the examples of the films many of us have grown up on. Kleks Academy is a Polish Netflix original that tells the story of a young woman discovering her family secret and using it for the benefit of others. This 2023 film is directed by Maciej Kawulski and is now streaming on Netflix.

Kleks Academy is a two-hour-long movie that is based on the novel of the same name by Polish author Jan Brzechwa. Ada Contrary is a young girl in her teens busy making a vlog for her father, who seems to have disappeared from her and her mother’s lives for good. Simultaneously, a...

Netflix Unveils Polish Slate Including Directing Debut For ‘High Water’ Scribe & Bank Robbery Thriller From ‘Forgotten Love’ Team
Image
Netflix has unveiled nine new movies and series from Poland including the directorial debut of High Water writer Kasper Bajon and a thriller from the team behind Forgotten Love.

As the streamer continues to unveil international originals by the bucket load, Project UFO leads the Poland slate, a mini-series helmed by Bajon that will transport fans of stories inspired by real events to the 1980s in order to investigate the alleged UFO landing in a remote countryside village.

Bajon wrote the popular High Water series, one of the biggest to come from Netflix Poland, about the 1997 Central European flood and how it was managed by the authorities of the Polish city of Wrocław.

Meanwhile, Michał Gazda (director) and Magdalena Szwedkowicz (producer), the team behind last year’s Netflix Poland movie Forgotten Love, are re-teaming on a movie following a retired policeman trying to bring to justice to those behind a ruthless bank robbery case,...

‘365 Days: This Day’: Netflix Reveals Trailer, First Look Images, Date for Erotic Thriller Sequel Starring Michele Morrone
Image
Netflix has revealed several images and a trailer for “365 Days: This Day,” the sequel to “365 Days,” which was a smash hit for the service. The sequel will stream from Apr. 27.

In the first film, the story of Laura and Massimo ended on a cliffhanger. It was in the daily Top 10 list on Netflix in over 90 countries around the world and it was the fourth most searched for film on Google globally in 2020.

However, it was accused of contributing to rape culture, and prompted a letter for its removal from the service. Singer Duffy wrote a letter to Netflix objecting to the film. Netflix declined to remove the film, indicating that it carried a caution for violence, sex and nudity and pointing out that it was an acquisition and not a commission. The film had released theatrically in Poland prior to being acquired.

In the sequel, the beautiful, feisty and...

Image
Polish film “365 Days,” a 2020 global success for Netflix, is getting two sequels.

The giant streamer has announced the start of production on “365 Days” part 2 and part 3. The original film follows Massimo, a member of the Sicilian Mafia family and Laura, a sales director. She does not expect that on a trip to Sicily trying to save her relationship, Massimo will kidnap her and give her 365 days to fall in love with him.

The original film was a Netflix acquisition. Variety understands that Netflix will be more involved in the sequels.

Original cast members Michele Morrone, Anna-Maria Sieklucka, Magdalena Lamparska and Otar Saralidze return for the sequels. Simone Susinna joins the cast, playing a new character,...

Polish Hits Boost Local B.O.
Jan Komasa
Though Jan Komasa’s “Corpus Christi” was a dark horse in the best international feature film category at this year’s Academy Awards, it should have come as no surprise to see a Polish director walking the red carpet outside the Dolby Theatre on Feb. 9. “Corpus Christi” was the country’s third Oscar nomination in the past six years for what was formerly known as the foreign-language film, joining Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2019 nominee “Cold War” and Pawlikowski’s 2015 winner “Ida.”

If these are heady times for the Polish film industry, however, the international kudos only tell part of the story. Poland continued its torrid stretch at the box office in 2019, as Europe’s sixth-largest theatrical market broke records for the sixth year running, with total box office and admissions hitting all-time highs.

More tellingly, Polish films held their own against Hollywood mega-franchises, with four local productions appearing with the likes...
