Actor Milauna Jackson Talks Crafting Resilience & Authority For ‘The Six Triple Eight’
Image
Milauna Jackson commands the role of Lt. Abbie Noel Campbell in Netflix’s historical drama The Six Triple Eight. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film dives into the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first military division comprised of Black women and the first to serve overseas during World War II. Led by officer Charity Adams (Kerry Washington), while in Europe, the faction was tasked with sorting and delivering over 17 million pieces of backlog mail that was mostly damaged or undeliverable due to insufficient storage holdings. Against all odds, despite the rampant racism, sexism and poor living conditions within the military and abroad, the women righteously completed their task in the faces of those who doubted them.

Here, Deadline speaks to Jackson about bringing an under-told Black story to life.

Deadline: How did you come aboard this project?

Milauna Jackson: I auditioned for the role through Kim Coleman.

‘Six Triple Eight’ Movie Cast And Characters Guide
Image
When it comes to period pieces that chronicle real-life incidents, characterization becomes much more significant—for quite obvious reasons, as there needs to be a resemblance between the person in real life and their on-screen portrayal. Director Tyler Perry’s war drama The Six Triple Eight, which revolves around the real-life heroics of the titular battalion of all-Black female soldiers during the Second World War, presented the bitter reality of existing racial prejudice in the armed forces. As the movie introduced a number of historical figures while bringing the unsung war heroes to life, needless to say a strong ensemble cast was essential to do justice to their silver screen counterparts. Thankfully, the strength of The Six Triple Eight is showcased through the performance of its cast, stacked with some prolific actors from contemporary media.

Tyler Perry’s Bad Streak of Reviews Continues with 'The Six Triple Eight'
Image
The 6888th battalion might very well “represent the best of America,” but filmmaker Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is still disappointing the critics. And, unfortunately, the results perpetuate Perry's poor scoring on Rotten Tomatoes, as the historical war drama currently registers only 49% on the Tomatometer against 35 reviews.

However, it’s not unusual for Perry’s movies to be glossed over. In fact, many of Perry’s most popular titles, including Madea Goes to Jail (29%), Madea’s Family Reunion (26%), and Meet the Browns (33%) all landed terrible reviews (per Rt), even though the fans adored them. So, it’s not that much of a surprise to see his newest Netflix flick being panned. 2024 has been particularly harsh for the filmmaker, with Mea Culpa registering only 18% on the Tomatometer, and then there is Divorce in the Black’s unprecedented 0% Rt score —zero! Even with its poor score, though, Perry has only...

The Six Triple Eight is a film we should all watch and learn from
Image
A new release this month on Netflix has been getting mixed reviews but it’s one we should all watch. That’s despite our rating the movie as one to miss when we gave you the three best new Netflix movies to watch (and two to skip) in December 2024. As a spoiler, the reason we used to skip The Six Triple Eight wasn’t that it’s not a good movie, it was more about the late December timing of the release.

The Six Triple Eight was released in selected cinemas in early December and became available on Netflix on Friday, December 20. It has a strong cast and relates an important story set in World War II. That's part of the reason why it should be a must-watch.

Before I explain more about why, let’s get back to that strong cast. You’ll see some top stars, including Oprah Winfrey,...

The Six Triple Eight Cast & Real-Life Character Guide
Image
Tyler Perry's World War II historical drama The Six Triple Eight features an all-star cast of Black actors who brought a remarkable true story to life. The Six Triple Eight follows the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black battalion of the Women's Army Corps that served overseas in World War II. The 6888th served primarily in England and France sorting mail that had been neglected in the fray of the war. The battalion was faced with thousands of letters that needed sorting and delivering, and they finished their task in half the time they were allotted, just three months.

The Six Triple Eight makes a strong case to be considered one of Tyler Perry's best non-Madea movies, and it's largely because of its talented cast. With stars like Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian heading up the ensemble cast, The Six Triple Eight is well-equipped to handle...

Tyler Perry's New War Movie Starring Kerry Washington Is Now On Netflix, And It Focuses On A Relatively Unkown Part Of WW2 History
Image
Although actor and director Tyler Perry is best-known for the hilarious Madea movies, he recently put out a new war film called The Six Triple Eight, which explores an aspect of World War II history that few know about. Perry's career first began on-stage in the late 1990s. Before becoming a highly influential and lucrative filmmaker, Perry wrote, produced, and starred in a number of plays which were later adapted to the big screen, including I Can Do Bad All By Myself and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Through these projects, he became famous for his character, Madea.

In the intervening years, Perry has expanded his repertoire beyond his iconic character. In the early 2000s, he starred in Tyler Perry's House of Payne, which ran for six seasons. He also delved into more dramatic projects, including the political drama, The Oval on BET. Perry has also been known to...

The Six Triple Eight Star Ebony Obsidian Praises Kerry Washington's Artistic Leadership
Image
After a limited theaterical run, The Six Triple Eight is coming home to Netflix on November 20. Based on the real-life women of the 6888th Battalion in World War 2 (as reported by Kevin M. Hymel in his groundbreaking article), Tyler Perry's new movie explores how the only unit made up entirely of Black women faced insurmountable odds in order to accomplish their duty. That mission was a unique one: to sort through years of postal backlog in order to dispatch over 17 million pieces of mail between soldiders and their loved ones.

While The Six Triple Eight follows a number of characters in the Battalion, it centers primarily on two real-life women: Lena Derriecott King and Major Charity Adams (Kerry Washington). The former joined the unit after her boyfriend was killed in action, while the latter was tasked with leading the unit in what first felt like punishment. The movie also stars Milauna Jackson,...

Tyler Perry Watches Superhero Movies With His Son, but Has No Plans to Make One: ‘They’ve Never Been Something That I Enjoy’
Image
Add Tyler Perry to the list of filmmakers not interested in directing a superhero movie.

“You’ve got to have a passion for it. I’m not a big superhero person,” the prolific multi-hyphenate told me at the Los Angeles premiere of his new WWII epic, “The Six Triple Eight.” “They’ve never been something that I enjoy.”

However, Perry said, “my son enjoys them, so we watch them together.”

Perry has created dozens of movie, television and stage projects in his decades-spanning career. His latest, “The Six Triple Eight,” is arguably his largest scale production yet. The Netflix film, starring Kerry Washington with a cameo by Oprah Winfrey, tells the story of the only all-Black female U.S. Army unit to serve overseas during WWII.

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: Kerry Washington And Exceptional Ensemble Bring Honor To Tyler Perry’s Stirring True WWII Story Of Black Female Army Unit
Image
Writer-director Tyler Perry takes a step up as a versatile filmmaker in bringing Netflix’s inspiring World War II-set true story The Six Triple Eight to the screen to tell the largely untold story of the Women’s Army Corps Unit of Color and their heroic and important achievement during the war in Europe in 1945. This unit was made up of more than 855 women of color, mostly Black women who endured racism, sexism, grueling weather and conditions far beneath their male counterparts, only to become uncelebrated heroes after being deployed to England, then France in order to make sure the letters from and back to home for soldiers landed in the right hands.

In a genre that has seemingly explored every possible story and angle of WWII in films made both during it and after over the past 80 years, this is one that appears largely hidden, but now is getting...

Image
H.E.R. sings the song “The Journey” for The Six Triple Eight, Netflix’s Tyler Perry film about the real women who delivered mail in Europe during World War II. Diane Warren wrote the song and says she is still blown away by H.E.R.’s vocals.

“It’s Whitney level,” Warren said during a panel discussion at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Film musical showcase. “I don’t even know if anyone’s ever heard her sing like this.”

Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson and more star as the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Batallion, who faced not only wartime turmoil but also discrimination just to do their jobs. Warren said H.E.R. (real name Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson), could relate to the themes of the movie and the song.

“Her journey has been amazing,” Warren said. “We all have our own journey. No journey’s easy.

Kerry Washington Inspires WWII Black Women Battalion to Battle in Tyler Perry’s ‘The Six Triple Eight’ Trailer
Image
Kerry Washington as an army captain delivers a rousing speech to the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to battle overseas during the Second World War in the teaser trailer (below) for Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight from writer, director and producer Tyler Perry.

“This is our mission. And we will not fail,” Major Charity Adams (Washington) declares quayside as the 855 Black women and women of color of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion march forward at her command to board a ship taking them to battle.

Their mission was to sort through a three-year backlog of mail — 17 million letters in all — yet to be delivered to American soldiers overseas, to restore morale on the front lines.

The Netflix biopic is part of an effort to give the 6888th battalion belated recognition for their heroism as they overcame discrimination to complete their letter-posting duties well ahead of schedule.
