Caitley Symons

  • Costume and Wardrobe Department
IMDbProStarmeterSee rank
Though American-born, Caitley grew up in the ancient cities of Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt, where she was surrounded by some of the oldest and most magnificent forms of art and design in history. Having had such first impressions as a young designer, her work is heavily influenced by the bold, but lyrical, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ornamentation and perfection of imperfection of artisan-made craft.

With these multicultural influences and a love of period fabrics for costume, Caitley's designs create a modern fusion of periods old and new, drawn from cultures both near and far. After studying Fashion design at the American College of London, Caitley returned to the US to finish her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. Upon graduation, Caitley relocated to Los Angeles to follow a successful career dressing stars for film, and television, later moving to San Francisco to dress the San Francisco and Bolshoi Ballet and then on to numerous Broadway shows in NYC.

2018 marked Caitley's transition into the role of costume textile artist, essentially known as the art department of the costume world. This very specific, behind-the-scenes niche involves extensive knowledge of painting, colour theory, dyeing techniques, breaking down fiber, using tone for lighting purposes, creating embellishment on fabrics, simulating sweat, blood, mud, bullet wounds, and other wear, tear, and abuse garments get in everyday life. It also requires a deeper, psychological understanding of how the actor, and character, will wear it and what application is key for the garment to tell its' own, subtle but very important story.

Caitley has been a proud member of the wardrobe unions in NYC (Local 764), and Los Angeles (Local 705) and a permit worker in San Francisco (Local 784). She is now a member of Local 479 Atlanta, GA.

Between 2021-2023, Caitley had the incredible opportunity to earn her graduate degree in Fibers from The Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA, between working on Martin Scorsese's epic American Western crime drama, 'Killers of The Flower Moon' and Francis Ford Coppola's science fiction drama, 'Megalopolis'.
