Last year, we heard that Barry Levinson, director of Best Picture winner Rain Man (for which Levinson also won the Best Director Oscar), was producing a mystery thriller called American Sweatshop with Oz showrunner Tom Fontana, and Riverdale, Look Both Ways, and Hustlers star Lili Reinhart had been cast in the lead role. Now, it has been announced that American Sweatshop is set to receive a limited theatrical release on September 19th, and will also be reaching VOD that day. A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

Robin Hardy’s folk horror classic The Wicker Man introduces its protagonist, Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), in only a few short scenes that sketch him as a devout Christian and religious conservative. As he takes the sacrament and sings hymns in a small Scottish church, he appears to be in his element but nonetheless uncomfortable. He’s a man who looks petrified to touch any surface of the material world lest it corrupt his being.

One quickly knows everything about how Howie regards the world. This allows The Wicker Man, as written by Anthony Shaffer, to swiftly upend the man’s sense of reality when the police officer flies out to the remote Hebridean town of Summerisle to investigate a missing persons case and discovers that all of the hamlet’s residents practice a pre-Christian form of paganism.

The Svod platform has ordered another six-part run of the show, which was created, written and directed by The Office creator, who also starred in the lead role.

This comes after the British comedy, which is produced by Gervais’ Derek Productions, launched on Netflix in March. Summer blockbuster season is just around the corner, but there's no need to wait until then to see a great movie. April brings us a wide variety of women-centric projects, as well as quite a few films helmed and/or written by women.

The month starts off with "Woman in Gold," starring Helen Mirren as a Jewish woman on a journey to recover her family's heirlooms, which was stolen by the Nazis. It's based on a true story, and Mirren roots the film with her powerful presence. "Closer to the Moon" is another WWII-era drama set for an April release, this one based on the crime capers of a group of Jewish resistance fighters a few years after the end of the war. "Marie's Story" is another period piece, centering around the efforts of a 19th-century nun to help a girl born blind and deaf.

There are a few more women-focused dramas being released in April, including the much-buzzed "Clouds of Sils Maria," which garnered Kristen Stewart the prestigious Cesar Award for supporting actress. Stewart has made waves for being the first American actress to win the French award, and the film looks to capitalize on that with its American release. “Félix & Meira" is another award-winner coming out this month. The Best Canadian Feature from the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival aims to make its mark with the story of an unconventional and radical love affair, one that reaches across racial and religious lines. "About Elly" also confronts cultural biases with its depiction of Iran's upper middle class.

"Effie Gray" tackles the sexual politics of the Victorian era, and with a screenplay from Emma Thompson, it's sure to be intriguing as well as quick-witted. Speaking of intriguing, "The Age of Adaline" follows a woman who mysteriously stopped aging eight decades ago. Blake Lively centers the film as Adaline, struggling with love and trust and all the other things that might follow when one lives seemingly forever.

Courteney Cox makes her big-screen directorial debut (the actress has previously directed episodes of "Cougar Town," which she stars in) with "Just Before I Go," and screenwiter Gren Wells makes hers as well with "The Road Within." Director Mia Hansen-løve ("Goodbye First Love") directs Greta Gerwig in "Eden," a look at the rise of French electronic music in the 90s.

The month will also see the release of a few very different documentaries. "The Hand That Feeds" focuses on undocumented immigrants struggling to form an independent union, while "Iris" follows 93-year-old Iris Apfel, a flamboyant New York City fashion icon. "Antarctic Edge: 70° South" is focused on the changing climate of the Antarctic's Peninsula and was made with the collaboration of Rutgers University students and scientists.

We'll also see comedic projects featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Alex of Venice") and Rose Byrne ("Adult Beginners"). Nia Vardalos returns to the screen with a role in "Helicopter Mom," which promises an outrageous performance from the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" star. "Sweet Lorraine" and "Farah Goes Bang" round out the women-centric comedy offerings of the month.

Woman in Gold

"Woman in Gold" is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle, which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.

The Hand That Feeds (doc) - Co-Written and Co-Directed by Rachel Lears

At a popular bakery café, residents of New York’s Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with a smile 24 hours a day. But behind the scenes, undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal wages, dangerous machinery, and abusive managers who will fire them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has never been interested in politics, but in January 2012 he convinces a small group of his co-workers to fight back.

Risking deportation and the loss of their livelihood, the workers team up with a diverse crew of innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own independent union, launching themselves on a journey that will test the limits of their resolve. In one roller-coaster year, they must overcome a shocking betrayal and a two-month lockout. Lawyers will battle in back rooms, Occupy Wall Street protesters will take over the restaurant, and a picket line will divide the neighborhood. If they can win a contract, it will set a historic precedent for low-wage workers across the country. But whatever happens, Mahoma and his coworkers will never be exploited again.

Effie Gray - Written by Emma Thompson

In her original screenplay “Effie Gray,” Emma Thompson takes a bold look at the real-life story of the Effie Gray-John Ruskin marriage, while courageously exposing what was truly hiding behind the veil of their public life. Set in a time when neither divorce nor gay marriage were an option, “Effie Gray” is the story of a young woman (Dakota Fanning) coming of age and finding her own voice in a world where women were expected to be seen but not heard. “Effie Gray” explores the roots of sexual intolerance, which continue to have a stronghold today, while shedding light on the marital politics of the Victorian era.

About Elly

As with director Asghar Farhadi's better-known films, “About Elly” concerns the affluent, well-educated, cultured, and only marginally religious members of Iran's upper-middle class. Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti), a pretty young woman invited as a possible romantic interest for one of the newly single men among this group, disappears suddenly without a trace. The festive atmosphere quickly turns frantic as friends accuse one another of responsibility. Plot-wise, Farhadi's drama has been compared to “L’Avventura”; but the film is less concerned with Elly's disappearance per se than with exploring the intricate mechanisms of deceit, brutality, and betrayal which come into play when ordinary circumstances take a tragic turn.

Clouds of Sils Maria

At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then, she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.

After premiering at last year’s London Film Festival, Love me till Monday finally makes its way to UK cinemas this week. Directed by TV veteran Justin Hardy, this likeable rom-com owes much to a compelling central performance by Georgia Maguire, in her feature film debut.

The film follows Maguire’s Becky, a gauche graduate looking after her younger brother whilst searching for love in a dead-end office job. Initially she is pining for hunky colleague Him (Royce Pierreson) but when that doesn’t work out she ends up in a relationship with her boss Steve (Tim Plester), who will only date her on weekends.

Though there are some plot elements here that feel generic, Love me till Monday does an excellent job of capturing the reality of post-Uni life, from Becky having moved back in with her mother to the banality of office work. The repeating of certain plot...

This high concept film has Bruce (Nick Frost) revisiting his childhood roots as a championship salsa dancer, after as an adult engineer he falls for his sales manager Julia (Rashida Jones). Turns out Jones is also into salsa, and Bruce believes that taking up the dance again is the best way to woo her. The film co-stars Chris O’Dowd as the rival suitor for Julia and Ian McShane as Bruce’s old salsa coach.

Well, savvy Facebook user Bea from the Facebook fansite "Doctor Who?" has organized all the actors together into one easy-to-geek-out-over photo guide showing how the various "Game of Thrones" characters have appeared in "Doctor Who" over the years, and vice versa. Joe Desmpie, who plays Gendry in "Game of Thrones," appeared in the 2008 "Doctor Who" episode "The Doctor's Daughter" as Cline. Boom! March 2013 is a little over four months away, but you don’t have to wait for today’s teaser poster reveal for the next addictive season of Game of Thrones on HBO. You can see it now. The art work is cold, dark and made of stone, but it gets its point across. Dragons, kings and wildlings return on 03.31.13. The repetition of the number three is also very fitting. It is, after all, season three that we’re waiting on pins and needles for. I like the swords worked into the image. If it revealed more than just a release date, the image wouldn’t look bad on a Game of Thrones sweatshirt.

The new season promises to delve into the same goings on from the first half of the novel, “A Storm of Swords”. That was the third book in George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.

"Game of Thrones" has reportedly cast a small but pivotal Season 3 role -- Roslin Frey -- according to fansite Winter Is Coming. British actress Alexandra Dowling is rumored to have scored the role, after Wic discovered the credit on Dowling's resume. A request for confirmation from HBO was not immediately returned.

While fans of the books already know why Roslin's casting is so important to the story, we'll try to keep it spoiler-free for those who haven't read the novels. Suffice it to say, Robb Stark (Richard Madden) was betrothed to an unspecified daughter of House Frey in Season 2 of the HBO drama, but broke that agreement to wed the healer Talisa (Oona Chaplin) at the end of last year, much to his mother's chagrin. The sprawling Frey family, headed by Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) should play an integral role in Season 3, if the series adheres to the storyline of George R.

In another comic video blog, we get to see Nick Frost play golf along with his on-screen (and probably real life) buddies played by Rory Kinnear (Gary) and Tim Plester (Mickey) for another scene in the movie Cuban Fury. We’ve had some pretty terrible weather over the last few weeks here in the UK but on the day this was shot, it was a glorious sunny day which according to Nick is perfect for the scene. My favourite part is the new game that they’ve invented known as ‘Golf Catch’ where you have to hit the ball to someone who has to catch it before breaking their fingers!

Looks like they’re having a lot of fun making this movie and I’m looking to see it when it hits the cinemas next year. Cuban Fury also stars Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd, Olivia Colman, Ian McShane and is directed by James Griffiths.

Chicago – The annoying and boring “Lockout” is a pile of aggressive junk masquerading as a good time. Some critics and viewers will pretend that this is a “fun B-movie” just because it has a few over-the-top sequences (that look completely cartoonish), an absolutely ridiculous premise, and a scenery-chewing performance from the great Guy Pearce. Don’t believe them. They’re making excuses for a movie that’s totally bereft of creative storytelling and has a screenplay that most straight-to-video directors would say needs a rewrite.
