‘Quatermass’ Restored as Hammer’s Sci-Fi Legacy Lives On
Image
Hammer Films continues its restoration campaign with the long-awaited release of The Quatermass Xperiment in a 4K Limited Collector’s Edition, bringing one of British science fiction’s most formative texts back into the spotlight. The release is available now, with its equally influential sequel Quatermass 2 currently up for pre-order.

Premiering 70 years ago, The Quatermass Xperiment marked a defining moment for Hammer, laying the foundations for a distinctly British take on sci-fi horror. Directed by Val Guest and based on the work of writer Nigel Kneale, the film follows a manned spaceflight that ends in disaster when one astronaut returns to Earth irrevocably changed. What begins as a standard recovery mission quickly spirals into a creeping terror as the lone survivor’s mutation progresses, putting humanity on a collision course with the unknown.

While its atmosphere, paranoia and stark black-and-white visuals have cemented its reputation for decades, this new...

Now Scream Factory has revealed that their upcoming 4K and Blu-ray release of the 1983 King adaptation The Dead Zone (watch it Here) includes a fan commentary with Flanagan and The Kingcast hosts Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler!

The Great Moment
Image
Every once in a while a movie studio would ruin what might have been a masterpiece — and Preston Sturges’ last-released Paramount comedy suffered exactly that. “Triumph Over Pain” was supposed to be something new, a daring blend of comedy and tragedy. Studio politics intervened and tried to turn it into a straight comedy. Disc producer Constantine Nasr oversees two extras that explain what happened in full detail; it’s a fascinating story of a brillant and successful writer-director at odds with his studio bosses. Joel McCrea, Betty Field and William Demarest star — and the show is still entertaining despite its problems.

December 21st Genre Releases Include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (Blu-ray / DVD), Roh (DVD), The Vampire Lovers (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray)
Image
With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.

Humanoids from Atlantis

Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely...

The Plague of the Zombies
The Plague of the Zombies

Blu ray

Shout Factory

1966 / 1.66:1 / 91 Min. / Street Date – January 15, 2019

Starring André Morell, John Carson, Jacqueline Pearce

Cinematography by Arthur Grant

Directed by John Gilling

Propping up one of Hammer Studios’ more visceral double-bills, John Gilling’s The Plague of the Zombies was released alongside Terence Fisher’s Dracula, Prince of Darkness in January of 1966. Fisher’s film was a briskly bloody chapter in the vampire’s long career but Gilling’s melancholy thriller packed a considerably gloomier punch.

The London-born Gilling was a writer/director with a taste for provincial settings, class conflict and horror – social commentary with a gothic twist. That formula was put to the test in his distinctly odd bit of sci-fi agitprop, 1957’s The Gamma People, a cold-war fable about a sinister doctor and an army of mind-controlled juvenile delinquents.

In 1960 Gilling turned that story on its head with The Flesh and the Fiends,...

December 18th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include The Predator, The House With A Clock In Its Walls, Venom, Dracula: Prince Of Darkness
Greetings, everyone! Welcome to what is the final Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2018, as it seems like we have no major genre home media releases coming home next week on Christmas. That being said, the year is ending on a strong note, as we have a number of essential titles hitting various formats this Tuesday.

Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Collector’s Edition releases of Dracula: Prince of Darkness as well as John Carpenter’s Starman (two of my personal favorites!), and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition of Bloody Birthday for this week as well. As far as recent theatrical titles go, The House With a Clock in Its Walls, The Predator, A Simple Favor, and Venom all arrive on various formats this Tuesday, and if you’re a completist, there’s a 4-film collection of the Predator movies that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has assembled,...

Strait-Jacket
Strait-Jacket

Blu ray

Shout Factory

1964 / 1.85:1 / Street Date August 21, 2018

Starring Joan Crawford, Diane Baker

Cinematography by Arthur Arling

Directed by William Castle

The planets aligned in 1964 as William Castle’s Strait-Jacket premiered in January and Susan Sontag’s Notes on Camp was published later that fall. There’s no mention of Castle’s axe-happy melodrama in Sontag’s essay – an eclectic rundown of kitsch touchstones extolling everything from The Mysterians to Steve Reeves – and that’s surprising because frame by frame, Castle’s overcooked fright-fest encompasses almost everything Sontag had to say about the joys of guilelessly bad art.

Joan Crawford stars as Lucy Harbin, a middle-aged outcast back home after a twenty year stint in a mental institution. The film’s prologue sets the stage; one hot night in 1944 Lucy paused by her bedroom window to find her husband sharing their bed with another, distinctly younger, woman. The enraged...

Blu-ray Review: The Vincent Price Collection II (Scream Factory)
The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

22 Things We Learned from the ‘House of Wax’ Commentary…in 3D!
Long before Avatar and RealD broke new ground to bring a new version of 3D to movie audiences, Warner Bros. released the wildly successful major motion picture House of Wax in Polarized 3D. This helped launch the 3D craze of the 1950s, but that fad soon fizzled as the films released in this format rarely held up on their own once the gimmick wore off. Still, House of Wax has earned a long life for genre fans, shown with anaglyph prints and also flat on various home video formats. Now that 3D technology has reached home theaters, Warner Bros. has released House of Wax with its original stereoscopic presentation on 3D Blu-ray, just past the movie’s 60th anniversary. For the new Blu-ray, film historians David Del Valle and Constantine Nasr lend their voices to a technical and historical commentary, shedding some new light on the film that gave Vincent Price his first real step into the...

House Of Wax Blu-Ray Review
House of Wax from 1953 has the distinction of being one of the first color 3D films released by a major studio. In the new 60th Anniversary Blu-Ray from Warner Brothers, you can watch the film in its original format; if, that is, you happen to be in possession of a 3D television and Blu-Ray player. Even without the benefit of 3D, House of Wax is a enjoyable and lurid slice of 1950s cinema, featuring Vincent Price and numerous severed heads.

Price is Professor Henry Jarrod, a brilliant wax sculptor who’s a bit too attached to some of his creations. He’s a decent person, though, right up until his wax museum partner Matthew Burke (Roy Roberts) burns down the exhibit for the insurance money, trapping Jarrod and his creations. Alive but horribly scarred, Jarrod transforms into a murderous madman. He takes his revenge on Burke and then sets about...
