Why The First Star Trek: Enterprise Novel Infuriated The Show's Co-Creator
Image
Many Trekkies have watched every episode of every "Star Trek" show to have aired since the franchise's inception in 1966. That's 900-some episode in total, so it takes a lot of commitment to stay abreast of the whole property. Deep-cut Trekkies, however, have not only seen all 900-some episodes, but have also studied sourcebooks, comics, and oral histories, trying to know as much about the show as possible. The next time you're with a Trekkie friend, ask to see their copy of Larry Nemecek's "The Star Trek The Next Generation Companion" or Rick Sternbach and Mike Okuda's "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual." I assure you, they have those books. They are required reading on the "Star Trek" syllabus.

Deep-cut Trekkies may also be familiar with the hundreds and hundreds of sanctioned -- but non-canonical -- "Star Trek" novels that have been published over the years. "Star Trek" tie-in novels,...

Rick Berman told Robert Picardo he would be one of the most popular characters on Star Trek: Voyager
Image
On the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager, Robert Picardo's character, the Emergency Medical Hologram, was sarcastic and appeared to be disinterested in what was going on around him, which made sense considering he was a hologram. He wasn't supposed to express emotions. And to top all of that, he wasn't supposed to be Voyager's permanent doctor. Fortunately for fans, that was the case, and Picardo was a series regular on the show.

Picardo told Larry Nemecek in the July/August 1995 edition of Star Trek Communicator, the magazine of Star Trek: The Official Fan Club, that he was "gratified and flattered" even though he was playing "kind of a jerk." But that acerbic wit and droll sense of humor earned him legions of fans, and, according to Picardo, Rick Berman warned him that his character was "going to be one of the most popular characters in the show."

Picardo...

Gene Roddenberry Stopped Denise Crosby From Getting A Beloved Star Trek Role
Image

A fun piece of trivia, culled from Larry Nemecek's invaluable sourcebook "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion": the character of Tasha Yar on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was originally conceived as a Latina character named Lieutenant Macha Hernandez, intended to be the tactical officer on board the Enterprise-d. Lieutenant Hernandez was largely inspired by the military grunt character Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) from James Cameron's "Aliens," a film that was still new at the time. Indeed, Goldstein was briefly considered for the role but was quickly turned down when it was revealed she wasn't Latina. After some further development, Hernandez was changed to Tanya, then Natasha, then just Tasha Yar after casting had begun. The character went from being a tactical officer to a security chief.

A wide swath of actresses auditioned for the role of Tasha,...

“Change the name of the show to ‘Star Trek: Voyager – Pigs in Space'”: The Disgusting Male Body-shaming Incident That Would’ve Never Happened in Patrick Stewart’s Tng
Image
Star Trek: Voyager was a replacement for Patrick Stewart’s canceled The Next Generation, but things differed between both sets when it came to one aspect. Star Trek: Tng would’ve never allowed any of its stars to feel inferior, thanks to Stewart’s interference. Voyager star Garrett Wang did not have a great time on the set of his series due to body-shaming comments from the crew.

Wang’s co-star Robert Duncan McNeill also confirmed that the showrunner allowed several lines in the show that took a not-so-subtle dig at their body weight. Wang even recalled that the comments forced him to hit the gym to avoid future mockery.

Star Trek's Murderous Take On Moby-Dick: The Crystalline Entity Explained
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The Crystalline Entity first appeared in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Datalore", and it served as an overwhelming force of nature that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise didn't know how to deal with. It was massive in scale and required great deals of energy to stay alive, energy it acquired by eating entire planets of life. It would extend a beam down to a planet's surface and essentially suck up and obliterate anything alive below. The Entity was an indifferent force of faceless destruction, and many Trekkies have compared it to Moby-Dick in that regard. It's not evil, but merely unaware that its consumption habits have the capability of ending entire civilizations.

In "Datalore," the Entity had been weaponized by Lore (Brent Spiner), the "evil twin" of the android Data (also Spiner). It seems that...

Patrick Stewart Threatened Paramount With A Lawsuit Over One Star Trek Costume
Image
In the first two seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the crew of the Enterprise-D wore zip-up, full-body jumpsuits as their uniforms. The jumpsuits had no collars and sported a diamond-shaped pattern that draped over the shoulders. They were very pajamas-like, but didn't look very cozy. Indeed, they weren't very flattering either. In Larry Nemecek's invaluable sourcebook "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion," actor Jonathan Frakes noted that the jumpsuit uniforms were so unforgiving that if one ate an extra donut for breakfast, everyone could see it for the rest of the day.

It wouldn't be until the show's third season that the uniforms would be redesigned. In addition to a small collar, the top portion of the uniform was replaced by a boxier, more roomy torso that zipped up the back. Although the actors can be seen constantly readjusting the new uniforms (in what came...

Star Trek's Lore Was Originally A Female Android (And A Love Interest For Data)
Image
In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Datalore", Trekkies were introduced to Lore (Brent Spiner), functionally Data's evil twin. Data (also Spiner) was said to have been built by a cyberneticist named Dr. Noonien Soong, and he had previously assumed he was the only android of his kind, but the investigation of a ruined human colony revealed the pieces of Lore, hidden away in a cave. Lore, when reassembled, reveals that he is emotional and even aggressive, the opposite of Data. He also claims that Data was built first as a prototype, making Lore the more perfect model. It would be revealed later that Lore was actually the imperfect prototype, and Data was the improved model.

Lore only appeared in four episodes of "Next Generation," but he was always up to no good, either conspiring with a massive, planet-eating crystalline entity or leading a religious cult of Borg outcasts.

Data Had An Entirely Different Backstory Planned Before Star Trek's Datalore
Image
In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Datalore", the Enterprise-d is called to a distant colony where the android Data (Brent Spiner) was found years earlier. When Data was first discovered, he had no memories, although he knew he was constructed by a rogue genius named Dr. Noonien Soong. Soong was blackballed from the scientific community many decades earlier and had to retire to a distant colony to continue his work. Back when Data was discovered, by a starship called the U.S.S. Tripoli, the colony had been destroyed and Soong was missing, presumed dead. Data had no memories of what happened.

In "Datalore," the Enterprise found something else surviving among the rubble. Pieces of a second android, identical to Data, were found in a previously sealed area. Data and the Enterprise engineers reassemble it and find that it is Lore (also Spiner), another Soong android. Lore, unlike Data,...

Star Trek: The Next Generation Nixed A Major Promotion For Captain Jellico
Image
In the 1992 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Chain of Command, Part I," Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), and Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn) are called away by Starfleet to undertake a dangerous, very secret mission to seek out and apprehend a dangerous biological weapon being developed by the untrustworthy Cardassians. Picard needs to resign as captain of the USS Enterprise in order to undergo this mission, and he is replaced by one Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox), a commanding officer with a dramatically different managerial style.

As a captain, Picard was open to suggestions, careful to keep a rapport open with his crew. Jellico, meanwhile, was stern, cold, and loved to micromanage. He hated casualness and jocularity, and expected everyone to be tightly wound. He wasn't a bad captain -- indeed, he was quite good -- but he was a terrible boss. The appearance of Jellico set many Trekkies' hearts aflame,...

How Battlestar Galactica Recruited A Star Trek Alum For Its Best Villain
Image
The Cylons, androids created by man, are the villains of "Battlestar Galactica," but they wear human guises. This reflects how the show's human heroes are all deeply flawed people and humanity's foibles (from arrogance to self-destructive) continue to haunt them even as their technology soars past the modern day.

Indeed, the best villain in "Battlestar Galactica" was a human character: Admiral Helena Cain (Michelle Forbes), commander of the Battlestar Pegasus. In the series' pilot min-series, the Cylons attack humanity's 12 colonies. The only survivors appear to be Galactica herself and a handful of civilian spaceships, who set out to find the mythical world Earth to be their new home.

Midway through season 2 in the episode, "Pegasus," the Galactica and her fleet meet the Pegasus, the other Battlestar which survived the genocide.. It doesn't stay a happy reunion for long. In a great dramatic move, Cain pulls rank on Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos...

Star Trek's Writers Worried Famke Janssen's Guest Spot Would Spark A Controversy
Image
Before they were Professor Charles Xavier and Jean Grey in "X-Men," Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen shared the screen on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Stewart was, of course, the series lead, Enterprise-d Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Janssen played Kamala, one of the many beautiful alien women on "Star Trek." Captain Kirk may be the famed womanizer, but Picard had his dalliances over the show's seven seasons -- Kamala included.

The episode is "The Perfect Mate," the 21st installment of the fifth season. Kamala is a Kriosian "metamorph," an empathetic being who can read their partners' feelings and adjust themselves to them. She's been betrothed to an ambassador from the neighboring world Valt, in hopes this will help end a conflict between the planets. As she travels on the Enterprise-d and works alongside Picard, they grow closer and closer.

Aired in 1992, this was Janssen's first role on television.

Star Trek's Up The Long Ladder Brought A Famous Star Wars Planet Into Federation Space
Image
Colloquially among Trekkies, the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Up the Long Ladder" is known as "The one with the Space Irish." Or maybe I'm the only one who refers to it that way. Regardless, "Up the Long Ladder" features the Space Irish. In the episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise has to evacuate a colony on the planet Bringloid V, as their sun is experiencing solar flares. Long ago, the Bringloidians adopted an Irish agrarian lifestyle, and they bring along their livestock, hay, and twee Irish accents. The colony's patriarch, Danielo O'Dell (Barrie Ingham), is a caricature Irish drunk, and his daughter Breanna (Rosalyn Landor) is a typically haughty Irish lass.

It's later revealed that the Bringloidians represent only half of a century-old transport ship, and that the rest of the settlers formed their own colony on a nearby planet. The second colony, called Mariposa, is technologically advanced,...

The Most Uncomfortable Uniforms In The Universe Led To An Iconic Star Trek Maneuver
Image
If one was in a critical mood, one might point out that many of the Starfleet uniforms seen throughout "Star Trek" don't really scream professionalism. In the original series, futuristic military uniforms were little more than warm, tight-fitting t-shirts, black slacks, and polished black boots. Women, meanwhile, wore tailored minidresses and black leggings, hardly practical for away missions that may involve hiking, phaser fire, or quick movement. One might need to flex their well-toned headcanon muscles to posit that future fabrics were more durable and regulated temperature better than what we have here in the 21st century.

On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," things didn't improve much. For one, some of the original minidresses remained in the backgrounds of the show's first few episodes. This was in the decidedly post-minidress year of 1987. To be fair, the showrunners clearly tried taking the curse off of the inherently sexist costuming by putting...

How Star Trek's Federation Evolved From Just a United Earth
Image
Star Trek is the definitive aspirational science fiction series. However, the allegorical institution representing universal cooperation -- the United Federation of Planets -- was a late addition, replacing the "United Earth" space force envisioned by creator Gene Roddenberry. One of the most important elements in the franchise's lore came from the man known as "Star Trek's other Gene."

Strange New Worlds Season 2 featured an alternate timeline Captain Kirk, who served in the United Earth Fleet. The name is a callback to the early episodes of The Original Series, when Roddenberry and his writers were still figuring out the lore. In 1966, Roddenberry brought in experienced television writer and television producer Gene L. Coon to help. Coon was the first person to name-drop "the Federation" in an episode, taking Roddenberry's hopeful aspirations for humanity's future and applying them to the whole galaxy.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Audition Memo Teases Alternate History With Wesley Snipes
Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, and Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
The original documentation for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" painted a slightly different picture compared to what eventually made its way to the screen. According to Larry Nemecek's invaluable "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion" (the 1995 version), the show's first casting call went out on December 10, 1986, calling for a certain kind of captain:

"Capt. Julien Picard – A Caucasian man in his 50s who is very youthful and in prime physical condition. Born in Paris, his Gallic accent appears when deep emotions are triggered. He is definitely a 'romantic' and believes strongly in concepts like honor and duty. Capt....

‘Star Trek’ Community, Led By William Shatner And George Takei, Mourns Rene Auberjonois

The Star Trek community has gathered online to mourn Rene Auberjonois, one of the series most-beloved characters in his role as the shape-shifting constable Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek and in its film series, tweeted out his condolences.

“I have just heard about the death of my friend and fellow actor @reneauberjonois. To sum up his life in a tweet is nearly impossible. To Judith, Tessa & Remy I send you my love & strength. I will keep you in my thoughts and remember a wonderful friendship with René.”

We’ll add more reflections as they come in.

Mindy Newell: The Adventure Will Continue
I don’t know about you, but I keep forgetting to watch Star Trek: Discovery.

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t wait for each episode of Star Trek Continues.

As I’m sure you know, CBS, through the complicated Hollywood system of it’s mine, it’s mine!, owns the television rights to Trek and in its infinite wisdom stupidity decided to launch Discovery on their streaming network. Which you have to pay for.

Star Trek Continues, a continuation of the five-year mission of the Constellation class starship USS Enterprise Ncc-1701, captained by James Tiberius Kirk, is a love-fast to the original series. It is available for free on YouTube and its own website.

Stc was co-produced by the non-profit charity Trek Continues, Inc., Dracogen, Far From Home LLC and Farragut Films, and was partially funded by Kickstarter, in an incredibly successful campaign of crowd sourcing.

Review: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director’s Cut
Home Video fans have a lot to look forward to as Paramount Home Entertainment releases a variety of Star Trek material this year. First up and arriving Tuesday, just days after its 34th anniversary is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director’s Cut. This is the first time director Nicholas Meyer’s version of the now-classic film is available on Blu-ray.

There’s little left to say about just how good the film is and looking back, we can easily see the affection both cast and crew put into the production. There was a gamble in bringing in Harve Bennett to produce and Meyer to direct only because neither had been a part of Trek previously and Paramount needed the film to be a major success to salvage the franchise.

Thankfully, Bennett understand the genre and Meyer was a gifted novelist and filmmaker so got down to the core elements.

Star Trek Continues: A Great Web Series and a Great Homage
With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.

Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

The creative minds behind Star Trek Continues have been putting out original episodes online since May of 2013. The latest release...

Rumors About A New Star Trek Series For Netflix Are Unfounded, But Intriguing
By now you may have heard the rumor circulating about a new Star Trek television series that Netflix was reportedly in talks to host. Unfortunately, those rumors have since been largely debunked as nothing but wishful thinking. It’s the sort of story that whet fans’ appetites but has no basis in real-world discussions. But in the wake of these rumors, a new hope rises that perhaps the seed has been planted in the brains of those that rule CBS and Netflix, and that the rumors might someday become reality.

The whole thing appears to have begun from an anonymous source that was then picked up by website Starfleet Intelligence (via GeekNation). The rumor stated that writer and producer Larry Nemecek had discussed the proposed series at the Phoenix ComicCon. The idea, as it goes, was that Netflix would produce a series for their streaming service, with CBS receiving royalties...

Trailer: ‘The Con of Wrath’ – The Story Of The Most Infamous ‘Star Trek’ Convention
Back before J.J. Abrams ever got his hands on the Star Trek franchise, came the ultimate fantasy, a Houston-based convention that turned into an epic debacle eventually dubbed The Con of Wrath. It was supposed to be the granddaddy of all Star Trek conventions — and wound up as the mother of all meltdowns. Just a few days after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan hit theatres, a high point for Star Trek fandom, the event took place. It was supposed to be the first time the entire main cast of Star Trek would appear together in public, on one stage. But everything went wrong…

Star Trek enthusiast Larry Nemecek is producing a documentary about this convention, also called The Con of Wrath, and has created a trailer to help raise awareness about his project.

The Con of Wrath Trailer
Star Trek (1966)
Producer and Star Trek enthusiast Larry Nemecek is embarking on the documentary The Con of Wrath, which chronicles one of the most notorious Star Trek conventions ever held. Taking place June 19th-21st, the show took place shortly after the theatrical release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and promised that the entire cast would be together for the first time on stage. It has been described as the original Star Trek "rock concert" arena convention that went from "meltdown to miracle"; an amazing save by fans, staff and Trek actors alike over three long days in 1982.

Larry Nemecek has released the first trailer for the film, featuring Walter Koenig. You can check it out below. And if you'd like to donate to the production and get some cool swag and a credit, or if you were there and want to offer your own personal story: clickHere

Trailer for The Con Of Wrath - Documentary on the most infamous Star Trek convention in history
A trailer has been released for a documentary called The Con of Wrath which is described as the most infamous Star Trek convention in history. The con took place on June 19-20, 1982 just a few days after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was released in theaters. Apparently the shit hit the fan at this convention and Larry Nemecek wanted to produce a feature sharing the story to the world. I've never heard of this until the trailer popped up, but it looks like an interesting documentary.

‘The Con of Wrath’ Trailer – The Story Of The Most Infamous Star Trek Convention Ever
Star Trek (1966)
June 19-20, 1982. Two dates that will live in infamy for Star Trek fans. Those were the dates of Ultimate Fantasy 1982, a Houston-based convention that turned into an epic debacle eventually dubbed The Con of Wrath. It was mere days after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan hit theaters, a high point for Star Trek fandom, and the event was billed as one of the first times the entire main cast of Star Trek were appearing together. Author and Star Trek historian Larry Nemecek is ready to bring that convention back to life in a new documentary that's beginning production later this year. "The Con of Wrath" will feature interviews from both celebrities -- like Walter Koenig and producer Harve ...

'Star Trek' is Coming to Blu-ray in a Big Way
Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang.
