Donald Trump asked Emma Thompson on a date, the Oscar-winning actor revealed at Locarno Film Festival.
“A phone rang in my trailer, and it was Donald Trump. I thought it was a joke. ‘Hi, it’s Donald Trump here,'” Thompson revealed. “I said, ‘How can I help you?’ I thought he needed directions. He said: ‘I would love for you to stay in one of my beautiful places, and maybe we could have dinner,” she revealed during a masterclass in Locarno, recalling working on Mike Nichols’ political satire “Primary Colors”.
“I realized that on that very day my divorce has finally come through. I bet he has people looking all over for suitable people he could take out, for all these nice divorcees — I mean, he found the number of my trailer! That’s stalking! So yes, I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump. I could...

Emma Thompson called her character in Brian Kirk’s film “Dead of Winter” a “real life heroine” during a conversation at Locarno Film Festival on Friday.
“We seem to be telling an awful lot of stories about the super rich or about the dark side of human nature, and this woman’s life, this ordinary humble life, is so beautiful and so rich,” Thompson said of the film. “She’s able to say: ‘I’m able to let it go to let someone else find herself.’ It’s a story of her love.”
In the action thriller, she plays a widowed woman who just wanted to go fishing in snowbound Minnesota. Instead, she finds herself in the middle of a kidnapping plot. Thompson also executive produced the film.

Emma Thompson has gone from snowy landscapes to sunny pastures. The star plays a widowed fisherwoman who travels alone through snowbound northern Minnesota and interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl, portrayed by Laurel Marsden (Ms. Marvel), in her latest film, Dead of Winter, directed by Brian Kirk (21 Bridges, The Day of the Jackal, Penny Dreadful). On Friday, though, she discussed the movie in summery Locarno, Switzerland during a press conference at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival.
In the film, Thompson’s character faces a huge challenge. “Hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, she realizes that she is the young girl’s only hope,” explains a synopsis.
“Why start this action thing when you’re 66?! That’s just stupid,” Thompson told the press in Locarno on Friday, earning laughter.

Variety spoke to the co-chiefs of Augenschein, which produced the film alongside Stampede Studios, about its slate of star-led, director-driven English-language films.
Locarno has a special place in the hearts of Augenschein’s founders, Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo, as it was there that their company first demonstrated that it had undergone a transformation.

Set to take place August 6-16, the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival has now unveiled its promising lineup. Among the highlights are the world premieres of Radu Jude’s second feature of 2025, Dracula; Alexandre Koberidze’s Dry Leaf; Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron; Maureen Fazendeiro’s The Seasons; Le Lac from Jean-Luc Godard’s collaborator Fabrice Aragno; Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest; Abdellatif Kechiche’s long-awaited sequel Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due; Sho Miyake’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers; and many more.
“Building the program of the Locarno Film Festival means engaging with the living matter of contemporary cinema. A cinema that unfolds while the world is undergoing violent upheavals, while we witness – in real time – horrors that we had only read about in history books or studied in archival footage,” said Giona A. Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival will debut 17 features, including new works by Radu Jude and Abdellatif Kechiche, as part of its 2025 competition. This year’s event runs from August 6 to 16.
The festival announced its competition lineups this morning. The Radu Jude feature is his much-talked-about Dracula. The film was shot in Transylvania and is said to blend several takes on the Dracula story. Teasing the project as last year’s Locarno Film Festival, Jude said: “I am from Romania. My father is actually from Transylvania. It’s time that someone from Romania does a Dracula film. It’s only Hollywood that has done it 1,000 times. We shouldn’t let Hollywood dominate our Dracula.”
The Abdellatif Kechiche feature is Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due, the third edition in his controversial Mektoub series. Ben Rivers, a Locarno regular, will debut his latest feature, Mare’s Nest. Scroll down for the full Loarno lineup.

When the dust settled, there were 177 submissions in the Best Drama Directing category for the 2025 Emmys. Based on the TV Academy's calculus, there will be seven finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.
The vast uptick in submissions, when compared to the writing category, is due to the number of directors put up for each show. Front-runners like Severance, The Pitt, The Last of Us, and Paradise each went for for triple entries. Meanwhile, Andor, The Diplomat, and The Handmaid’s Tale each opted for a double-play. And because some shows had only one director behind the camera throughout the duration, such as The White Lotus and Squid Game, they were only allowed one episode for the category.
While a higher number of submissions per series may result in potential vote-splitting, we have seen time and time again that passionate voters will mark down a show on the ballot multiple times,...

In the 1971 novel “The Day of the Jackal” by Frederick Forsyth and the 1973 film adaptation by Fred Zinnemann, there was not much of a question about who the Jackal was: a remorseless assassin who had been hired to kill French president Charles de Gaulle. Either he was going to die or de Gaulle was.
But Peacock’s new TV version, created by Ronan Bennett, is different — partly because it’s a continuing series, so you expect its title character to survive, and partly because the Jackal is played by Eddie Redmayne, whose innate likability means that we’re bound to root for him at least some of the time.
Redmayne’s Jackal is meticulous and relentless, but one of the conceits of the show is that the British detective who’s out to get him, played by Lashana Lynch, is as remorseless as her target, and almost as willing to bend the rules.

If you were a fan of “The Day of the Jackal,” the 1973 political thriller directed by Fred Zinnemann and based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel about an elusive assassin, and worried that a television adaptation would prove unworthy, you weren’t alone — even the creators of Peacock’s new take on the material were nervous about living up to the original.

Netflix, as one of the best streaming services available, is known for offering a wide variety of films to its consumers. Every month, plenty of new movies are added to the platform, but, unfortunately, the streaming service is forced to remove some hits as well.
In February 2025, for example, several successful films such as Dune, Snowpiercer, and The Fast and the Furious franchise were removed, leaving many people out of the loop. So, if you're one of those individuals with a long list of films to view, some of them may leave Netflix sooner than you imagine. With that in mind, here's every movie leaving Netflix in March 2025.

Bad news for action movie fans, as a thriller with 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes is all set to abandon Netflix soon. Released back in 2019, the action thriller 21 Bridges features the late, great Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman in the lead as an NYPD detective on the hunt for a pair of cop killers. Boasting a reliably charismatic performance from Boseman, 21 Bridges proved divisive among critics and audiences, but is well worth any and every action movie fan’s time. But you don’t have long.

German production company Augenschein has just added “The Weight,” starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, to its slate. Company founders Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo talk to Variety about how they made the shift from foreign-language arthouse fare to English-language elevated genre movies, with stars attached.
Despite its very German-sounding name — which roughly translates as the “shine of the eye” — Augenschein has the global market firmly in its sights. As for the films, they are defined by their “signature-style directing,” Leo says.
Its Berlin lineup is led by Jan-Ole Gerster’s thriller “Islands,” starring Sam Riley, Stacy Martin and Jack Farthing, which world-premieres Sunday in the Berlinale Special Gala section, with Protagonist handling world sales.
“Mother Mary”
Other films on its slate include David Lowery’s pop melodrama “Mother Mary,” starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Cole, with A24 handling worldwide distribution; and Brian Kirk’s action thriller “The Death of Winter,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a very different place if these directors had been chosen to develop movies for Marvel Studios. The director is one of the most important figures in the development of any movie, but for Marvel Studios, this position is even more crucial. Some of Marvel's directors have become household names as they have helped to produce the most successful film franchise of all time, but many of them weren't Marvel Studios' only choice when planning the McU's projects.
Over the years, Marvel Studios has built strong relationships with brilliant directors, including Jon Favreau, the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, Ryan Coogler and Destin Daniel Cretton, among others. Had many of these notable directors chosen not to join the MCU, however, Marvel Studios had other options. “Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.
Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.
“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”
Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

We are now in the season of his beloved short story A Christmas Carol, but really, Charles Dickens never goes out of season. One of the 19th-century writer's most popular novels, Great Expectations, has been adapted to the screen many times. Most recently, Steven Knight's miniseries based on the novel came to Hulu in 2023, featuring Olivia Colman as the icon herself, Miss Havisham. However, going back a little more than a decade, the 2012 3-episode miniseries starring Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham, Douglas Booth as Pip, and Vanessa Kirby as Estella ultimately takes the cake as one of the most visually stunning, well-acted Dickens adaptations so far. This iteration of the novel from director Brian Kirk really captures the tone of the novel and has a standout performance from Anderson that is one of the best of her career.

Eddie Redmayne has confirmed he is returning for “The Day of the Jackal” Season 2.
The series, in which Redmayne plays mysterious mercenary the Jackal, was renewed last month.
For fans who haven’t seen the Sky and Peacock adaptation of the 1972 book and 1973 feature film starring Edward Fox as cold-blooded assassin the Jackal, the news is sure to be confusing.
The original sees the Jackal hotly pursued across Europe in a high-stakes cat and mouse chase by a dogged detective — played by Lashana Lynch in the new adaptation — before one of them must perish when they eventually meet face to face.
Those who have watched the Sky/Peacock version — including it’s expectation-defying season finale — will know there is more story for Redmayne to tell.

The Day of the Jackal will see more days as The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Peacock has renewed the thriller for another season. Our Alex Maidy enjoyed the show as he said in his review, “This grounded, realistic thriller takes time to develop the protagonist and antagonist while leaving audiences wondering which side they trust and whether they should or should not. This is not a clean-cut espionage story or even an action-oriented tale. The Day of the Jackal is a worthy modernization of the classic novel and delivers two of the year’s better performances on film or the small screen.”

The series centers on the titular Jackal (Redmayne), a chameleon-like contract killer “who makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee,” as the show’s synopsis states. “But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (Lashana Lynch), who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.”
“The Day of the Jackal” launched Nov. 14 to critical and commercial acclaim and has sold to almost 200 territories around the world. In Variety‘s review, critic Aramide Tinubu called it a “truly engaging drama,” adding: “Meticulously presented and beautifully detailed, the series is a breathless adventure until the very end.”
The 10-episode series is currently airing, with the last episode set to premiere on Dec.

The Peacock and Sky dramatic series “The Day of the Jackal” was renewed for a second season, the streamer and broadcaster announced Thursday.
The show’s success was “unusually strong” Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame told TheWrap this month. The series is part of Neame’s strategic plan that includes launching series that are “expressly British but will have global appeal.” The formula worked when he sold “Downton Abbey” to NBCUniversal in 2008, though he admitted he “could not have anticipated” how successful that series would ultimately become.
Sky and Peacock announced the series was in production in 2023. Eddie Redmayne produced and starred in the first season. The show is based on the Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name.
“While staying true to the DNA of the original story, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like ‘anti-hero’ at the heart of the story in a high octane,...
