First met her boyfriend Idris Elba at a party while he was shooting The Mountain Between Us (2017). On February 10, 2018, the couple announced their engagement in London (UK) and married on April 26, 2019 at the Ksar Char Bagh hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco.

In April 2020, she was appointed as a goodwill ambassador for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). She and her husband Idris Elba worked with the agency on projects in Kenya, Zambia and Egypt, aimed at helping farmers, and combating hunger and climate change.

She and her husband Idris Elba were awarded the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum (WEF), an international non-governmental organization, for their work on environmental conservation, food security and climate change. (January 17, 2023)

Received her Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy from Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia, Canada, with intentions of attending law school.
