Seven Hours After Violet, the new project from System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian, have announced their self-titled debut album, out October 11th via Sumerian Records. The band also dropped another single, “Radiance.”
From the band name down through the freshly unveiled album art, Seven Hours After Violet are clearly tapping into a 2000s nu-metal aesthetic, which also translates to the music. “Radiance” traverses both heavy and melodic territory, signaled by the shifts between clean and harsh singing. The subtle electronic sampling during the instrumental breaks is a particularly nu-metal move.
Seven Hours After Violet consist of Odadjian on bass, singer Taylor Barber (Left to Suffer), guitarist Morgoth, singer-guitarist Alejandro Aranda, and drummer Josh Johnson (Winds of Plague). The band made its debut back in June with the excellent harsher “Paradise,” a Heavy Song of the Week selection.
“This album is the culmination of years of creative exploration,” remarked Odadjian in a press release.

System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan has been granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a reusable shipping container that he invented. The musician shared the news on his Instagram account, posting images of both the patent and the container design.
The drummer wrote, “So excited to get my first patent! It’s a long process but being an inventor has been rewarding in so many ways! This is a reusable, rechargeable and completely secure shipping container that can replace cardboard boxes. It can eliminate massive amounts of waste and is applicable to all aspects of delivery including food and collectables.”

Asked in the comments how long it took from concept to patent, Dolmayan responded, “5 years.”
Another person commented, “Corrugated boxes are reusable, renewable, and recyclable. They are also inexpensive. Most companies have a green packaging initiative until they see the cost.

System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian has unveiled his new band, Seven Hours After Violet, along with their debut single, “Paradise” (stream below).
In addition to Odadjian, Seven Hours After Violet are comprised of singer Taylor Barber (Left to Suffer), guitarist Morgoth, singer-guitarist Alejandro Aranda, and drummer Josh Johnson (Winds of Plague).
Regarding the single “Paradise,” Odadjian stated, “The song opens the album and showcases the various dynamics we explore throughout which makes it the perfect introduction to Seven Hours After Violet. I’ve been making music for over 30 years, I wanted to do something super heavy, but melodic and come back to my roots. Until this band, every side project I’ve done has been outside of the walls of heavy music.”
He continued, “I steered away from anything heavy because System of a Down is heavy. Once I started with Seven Hours After Violet, I had to let go of that.

An app where mid-level celebrities can make beer money by carrying out the instructions of a total stranger via a selfie video… what could possibly go wrong? Elijah Wood, Dean Norris of “Breaking Bad,” Kate Flannery from “The Office,” Priscilla Presley (“The Naked Gun”), and “Scrubs” curmudgeon John McGinley found out the answer the hard way this summer.
Beginning in July, “Russia-aligned influence actors have tricked celebrities into providing video messages that were then used in pro-Russian propaganda,” the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center found and shared in a Thursday blog post. The videos were then “manipulated to falsely paint Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a drug addict.”
Ok, so that could go wrong.

It took a war for System of a Down to record new music. After seeing the country of Azerbaijan start a conflict with Armenia in September, the musicians, who are all of Armenian descent, rushed into the studio to record two new songs, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” to draw attention to the crisis in their ancestral homeland.
The band will donate proceeds from the songs, which come out Friday, to aid Armenians, and it is soliciting fans to donate to the Armenia Fund, which provides humanitarian relief to the region.

Los Angeles – Few rock bands that emerged during the '90s nu-metal phase still exist today and practically none have the amount of respect and admiration the Deftones receive from their musical peers. Countless bands cite the Sacramento-based group as a big influence on their music.
Saturday night (July 28) the Deftones stopped by the Troubadour in Los Angeles – an incredibly tiny, sweaty 300-capacity club – to perform their first proper show in nearly a year and their only solo date before heading out on a co-headlining amphitheater tour with System of a Down prior to their new, still-untitled album dropping on October 9. Soad drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavo Odadjian were both in attendance, enjoying the set alongside Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato.

The members of rock band System of a Down agreed to an indefinite hiatus to stave off a permanent split after success started to get the better of them. Bassist Shavo Odadjian has revealed the real reason behind the band's 2006 break, which is ongoing four years later, admitting it was the only way to keep the band going.
He tells Hustler magazine, "We won a Grammy and we had two number one records. We were making a lot of loot (money). Then some people within the group of four brothers started seeing things differently... and their actions made the reactions of others pretty unbrotherly-like."
"Ten years ago these four motherf**kers were getting paid nothing while traveling in a ten-seat Rv for seven months, following Slayer around. Flash forward: We are now in a situation where we are making so much money a show that I can't even say.

Former System of a Down star Shavo Odadjian once sneaked into an AC/DC video shoot and stole the show from Arnold Schwarzenegger. A pal of the rocker was charged with printing passes for the "Big Gun" shoot and he made 30 extra to hand out to friends.
Odadjian turned up to the set at Van Nuys Airport in California and found himself standing next to Schwarzenegger. He tells Hustler magazine, "It was the video for... the film 'Last Action Hero'... and there is a part where they bring Arnold into the crowd, and they brought him right next to me."
He further shares, "The cinematographer or the light guy screwed up. If you look at the scene in the video, you can see there is too much light on that kid. You can see that kid more than you can see Arnold. And that kid is me."...

There hasn’t been a serial horror story in quite some time. Probably John Saul’s Blackstone Chronicles is the most recent. But there is a new kid on the block now, Rick Florino’s Dolor, and this ain’t your mama’s serial horror.
Set in the mysterious town of Dolor, the ten-part series will unfold slowly, introducing the reader to Dolor’s various denizens as well as the town itself. Because from the beginning, with "Lila", the reader knows something has gone terribly wrong in Dolor; and as the ten diaries are read by an FBI agent investigating what happened in Dolor, the reader will also discover what happened and who (or what) might be responsible.
Dread Central recently had an opportunity to chat with the creator of Dolor: Lila (review here) and discovered that Rick Florino is something of an enfant terrible and an author people should take note of.

Brent Hinds, frontman and lead guitarist for Mastodon, has reached the inevitable point in the evening when his speech starts to slur. A few hours back, during a listening session for his Atlanta metal band’s epic new album, Crack the Skye, he polished off at least six Budweiser tallboys; here at a clubby midtown Manhattan steakhouse, where his tribal forehead tattoo and reddish lumberjack’s beard are comically out of place, he’s deep into a procession of Jack-and-gingers. He’s cracking some increasingly nasty but harmless jokes about...

The road to this album has been hella-rough for members of Atlanta's premier mystic-metal quartet Mastodon… from family tragedies to health issues, even an alleged dust-up involving guitarist Brett Hinds and System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian that left Hinds hospitalized, they've literally got the scars to prove it. But as Conan (and Nietzsche, natch) could tell you, that which does not kill us makes us stronger… and their fourth studio release Crack the Skye proves this adage beyond a doubt, because to my ears it represents their most powerful and accomplished work to date. Read on to find out how this CD crumpled up your reviewer's fragile mind like tissue paper! Mastodon have never shied away...
