‘White With Fear’ Documentary Sets June On-Demand Release Date (Exclusive)
Image
Director Andrew Goldberg’s political documentary “White With Fear,” featuring interviews with Hillary Clinton, Steve Bannon and more has set an on-demand release date of June 3, Variety can exclusively reveal.

Providing rare first-person access to notable figures like Clinton and former Fox News reporter Carl Cameron, the documentary explores the decades-long strategy employed by conservative politicians “to amplify racial divisions and white victimization narratives for power and profit,” according to an official synopsis. The documentary also explores how these tactics aim to hurt immigrants and spread Islamophobia around the world.

Additional interviews feature former Trump campaign strategist Rick Gates, former Trump campaign CEO and chief strategist Bannon, The Lincoln Project co-founder Stuart Stevens, New York Times opinion writer Jean Guerrero, “Dog Whistle Politics” author Ian Haney López and former Jeb Bush campaign communications director Tim Miller. Through this collection of voices, “White With Fear” takes on the tradition of classic...

Mitt Romney Says He’s Not Tonight’s DNC “Surprise Guest”; Steph Curry Shows Up, Is Beyoncé Coming Too?
Image
There are a lot of celebrity rumors and sightings swirling around the Democratic National Convention on Thursday as Kamala Harris prepares to take the stage in a historical occasion in Chicago.

With the likes of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé at the top of the surprise list, at least one high-profile candidate has taken himself out of the race. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said he is not the “surprise guest” who has been rumored to appear this evening.

Just over an hour ago, Romney posted on X: “Contrary to fake news posts, I am not the surprise guest at the DNC tonight. My guess is that it will be Beyoncé or Taylor Swift. So disappointing, I know!”

Tucker Carlson Condemns Alexei Navalny’s Death As “Barbaric” Days After Trumpeting Vladimir Putin’s Russia
Image
The news of the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny very quickly put a focus on Tucker Carlson, the right-wing talk host who recently trekked to Moscow to interview Vladimir Putin.

Carlson told the Daily Mail today that “it’s horrifying what happened to Navalny. The whole thing is barbaric and awful. No decent person would defend it.”

In the wake of reports of Navalny’s death, Carlson faced another round of backlash after interviewing Putin last week and for subsequent social media posts. In them, Carlson trumpeted a Moscow subway station and a grocery store.

Former congresswoman Liz Cheney wrote on X/Twitter earlier today, “This is what Putin’s Russia is, Tucker Carlson. And you are Putin’s useful idiot. Same with you J.D. Vance and other Putin-wing Republicans who are working to defeat Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.”

Carlson posted his interview with Putin on X/Twitter on Feb.

‘The Lincoln Project’ Depicts Vanity and Self-Regard Among the Anti-Trump Right: TV Review
Image
It’s been said that former President Donald Trump corrupts all who enter his orbit — that it’s impossible to deal directly with him without taking on his amorality and crassness.

“The Lincoln Project,” a new documentary series on Showtime, depicts that process among his political opposition. Here, people devoted to ousting Trump mirror his rhetorical style and his self-regard. And it’s in subtly making this case that the documentary succeeds, even as it grows punishing to watch.

The Lincoln Project, a circle of former high-level Republican strategists who made viral anti-Trump ads, seemed throughout the 2020 presidential election to be, Trumpishly, more focused on brand promotion than political work. “No one’s ever fucked with a candidate like we’ve fucked with a candidate,” Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson says early in the doc; those schemes include a Times Square billboard, attention-getting for attention’s sake.

In the months before the election,...

‘The Lincoln Project’ Trailer: Showtime Docuseries Looks ‘Meteoric Rise And Sudden Rift’ Of Anti-Donald Trump Effort — Watch
Image
Showtime is unveiling the trailer for The Lincoln Project, the upcoming docuseries that looks at the effort by GOP strategists to stop Donald Trump.

Directed by Fisher Stevens and Karim Amer, the project “goes behind the scenes of the meteoric rise and sudden rift” of the group, according to a rep for the project. The project shows the groups audacious efforts to defeat Trump, drawing his attention when he was in the White House, but it also features its members as they grapple with a sexual harassment scandal and internal breaks over its finances.

“Here’s the key: There’s nothing noble about us. But we’re useful,” Lincoln Project member Stuart Stevens says at one point in the trailer.

The Super Pac was formed in late 2019 by Stevens, George Conway, John Weaver, Rick Wilson, Jennifer Horn, Ron Steslow, Reed Galen and Mike Madrid. In January, 2021, The New York Times...

George Clooney
The George Clooney-Mitt Romney Connection
George Clooney
We doubt George Clooney will be holding a fundraiser for Mitt Romney anytime soon, but he does have a connection on the inside of the Republican presidential contender's campaign. So who is he? He's Romney's top strategist, Stuart Stevens, who as it happens is currently taking heat from conservatives for being the one responsible for Clint Eastwood's rambling empty chair ad-libbing at the Republican National Convention ahead of Mitt's nomination acceptance speech. Per Deadline.com, Stevens has a Hollywood pedigree, having worked as a writer on such TV shows as Northern Exposure, I'll Fly Away, Commander In Chief and the HBO show K Street, which is how he came to meet the Oscar winner....

Barack Obama
Mitt Romney's Chief Strategist Has Ties To George Clooney
Barack Obama
As it turns out, George Clooney has connections with Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Briefly mentioned in a scathing new Politico article about the failings of Romney's campaign strategist Stuart Stevens -- and blown out to full coverage by Deadline.com's Nikki Finke -- is word that Stevens was the political consultant on the George Clooney film "The Ides of March." As Finke notes, Stevens even appears in a special feature about political consulting on the "Ides of March" Blu-ray release.

Not that Stevens' Hollywood connections are a major secret. He was a writer for the TV series "Northern Exposure," something Fox News noted during a segment on Stevens in August. Interestingly, Fox News -- which called him "the governor's most influential advisor" -- left out that Stevens worked on "The Ides of March" with Clooney.

During that August interview on Fox News, Stevens said he hoped the Republican National...

Romney Strategist’s Ties To George Clooney
Given how much Republicans hate Hollywood in general, and George Clooney in particular because of his Obama fundraising and Democratic Party activism, you’d think any associations would be radioactive to the Gop. Nope. Stuart Stevens is currently Mitt Romney‘s chief campaign strategist, chief campaign ad maker, and chief campaign speechwriter. And yet Stevens was the political consultant for Clooney’s 2011 political movie The Ides Of March and 2003 political TV show K Street. In fact, Stevens has many Hollywood connections: he was a UCLA Film School grad student, a one-time fellow with the American Film Institute, and a credited TV writer on Northern Exposure, I’ll Fly Away, and Commander In Chief (also a consultant producer — see below.) Related: George Clooney Appearance Raises $625K For Obama George Clooney’s Record $15M Fundraiser For Obama Stevens now has a bullseye on his back because of a new Politico article which...
