Macaulay Culkin Regrets Missing ‘Rushmore’ Audition During Acting Hiatus: “Oh Dang”
Image
More than 25 years later, Macaulay Culkin revealed he was almost an early muse for Wes Anderson in the director’s sophomore feature.

The Golden Globe nominee recently shared his regrets about missing the audition for Anderson’s 1998 comedy Rushmore as he took a post-Richie Rich (1994) hiatus from acting following a busy career as a child star.

“I was actually pretty good at reading, I was voraciously reading through the scripts, but there was a couple that slipped through,” he said on Hot Ones.

“I remember about two years later, clearing out the house and throwing out the old scripts and I saw the one that I didn’t read was Rushmore,” added Culkin. “I was like, ‘Oh dang.’ I probably could have done that one.”

Although he admitted he “couldn’t imagine anyone but [Jason] Schwartzman doing that part,” Culkin added, “But at the same time I’m like, ‘Oh man,...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Looks Back on 24 Years of Rajiv Rai’s Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat
Image
In another feature as part of his This Day That Year series, Subhash K Jha looks at Rajiv Rai’s Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat which released in 2001.

Rajiv Rai whose earlier techno-savvy products like Tridev and Mohra created a psychedelic stampede in the theatres, leaves us with mixed feeling about his latest film. Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat is Rai’s mellowest effort to date. Never before has the snowcapped splendour of the by-now cliched Alpine summits in Switzerland been captured with so much emotion and passion.

Right away, full credit must go to Rai’s cinematographer P.S. Vinod for giving Pyar Ishq … a richly textured almost-fairytale look of Scottish wonderment and Swiss sensuality. The lyrical quality that Rai’s well-written-in-parts screenplay endeavours to represent through its quadrangular romance is far more eloquent in the visuals.

Not that the film lacks finer, delicate moments. Rai’s aesthetically appealing work demonstrates a...

Netflix is dropping only 9 series and movies this week
Image
It is a good time of the month to be a Netflix subscriber. New movies and series arrive and few leave. The worst comes at the beginning and the end of each month, of course. The middle of the month? Not so much.

This week is easy, unless you are a parent. You might have some unhappy kiddos because there are several animated series leaving your favorite streamer that your child might have come to love. They will need to find something else. That isn't being harsh; it's true.

An Inspector Gadget series? Gone. Batman? It's out too, Richie Rich? See ya! Heck, even a series called White Gold is gone, but we don't know if that is a children's show.

What is leaving Netflix the week of May 17 through 23?

There is a film you will want to catch before it's gone. A Simple Favour stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively,...

Macaulay Culkin Makes Plea to Investigation Discovery After ‘Hollywood Demons’ Airing
Image
Macaulay Culkin took to Instagram on Monday (March 31) to share a message with Investigation Discovery, encouraging the network to “take it easy” on former child stars. Culkin, who rose to fame as a child star in movies like Home Alone, Uncle Buck, and Richie Rich, shared a photo of the Investigation Discovery logo alongside the caption, “Dear ID, Please take it easy on the kiddos.” He added, “We’ve all been through the wringer. No one wants to feel exploited. Don’t pile on. Love, Macaulay Culkin.” Culkin’s message was posted the same day ID aired the second episode of its Hollywood Demons docuseries, titled “Child Stars Gone Violent,” centering on child actors from the 1990s. The episode focused on the lives of Home Improvement‘s Zachery Ty Bryan, Family Ties’s Brian Bonsall, That’s So Raven’s Orlando Brown and others who have been through various troubles...

Macaulay Culkin's 'Richie Rich' Reaches Top 10 Streaming Chart on Netflix
Image
Richie Rich, the 1994 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin, is a streaming success. The film, currently available on the Netflix library, has spent a few days on the streamer's top 10 list of most popular movies. Richie Rich is sitting in the eighth spot at the time of writing, while other titles on the list include The Menu, Back in Action, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Directed by Donald Petrie, Richie Rich is based on the comic book character of the 1950s. The character also had an animated cartoon show in the 1980s, which was then revived in 1996 after the release of the movie. Richie Rich only made $76 million from a $40 million production budget and had a mixed reception by critics; it currently has a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was considered a box office flop, Richie Rich blew up the home video market and made an estimated $125 million in home video sales.

What Film Gets the Best Awards Boost at iTunes? That’s ‘Anora’
Image
“Moana 2” (Disney) predictably is #1 on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD charts in its second week. But most notable? How “Anora” (Neon) is surging not only in its Oscar Best Picture chances but also on VOD.

Meantime, the Amy Schumer-starring rom-com “Kinda Pregnant,” positioned to score for Valentine’s Day ahead, is #1 this week at Netflix. It leads a top 10 chart otherwise mostly comprised of studio library comedies.

Sean Baker’s film has ranked now for seven weeks, an unusually long run. With staged price levels, the Palme d’Or winner has reached its highest ranking yet: now #3 at iTunes.

In theaters, “Anora” ranked among the top 10 movies for two weeks, highest at seventh place. The sex-worker screwball dramedy is performing far better at home than its $15 million total gross through this weekend would suggest — apart from its Oscar nomination boost. Its price reduction kept it from...

The incredible and mostly true story of Belle Gibson, the glorious end of Cobra Kai, the return of arguably the world’s most talked about reality show, Kate Hudson flexing her comedy muscles and Robert De Niro leading a prestige TV show are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in February.

On Feb. 5, Amy Schumer’s comedy Kinda Pregnant debuts on Netflix. ‘Marked Men: Rule + Shaw’ Review: Hopeful Romance Novel Franchise Kickoff Fails to Strike Sparks
Image
Jay Crownover made a splash with readers of romance novels 12 years ago with “Rule,” a good-girl-tames-bad-boy tale that generated five interlocking follow-ups. Their blanket title “Marked Men” referred to tattoos — a frequent motif in the prolific author’s several subsequent books. Now there’s a screen translation in “Marked Men: Rule + Shaw,” which ostensibly draws on the whole sextet but focuses on its first installment.

Whether this Fathom Events release will itself generate sequels is a question mark left dangling at the end of these 90-odd minutes, which play theaters nationwide Jan. 22 and 23. Crownover’s fans enthuse over her bringing above-average character dimension to the genre’s usual “spicy” content requirements. Yet neither of those qualities really comes across in “The Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes’ feature, a fairly painless diversion — albeit one shallow as a kiddie pool in emotional engagement, while surprisingly short on sexy-time as well as chemistry between...

'I Have a Scar': Macaulay Culkin Recalls Painful Home Alone Filming Accident
Image
Home Alone endures as the family-friendly Christmas comedy that flipped the script on home invasion movies. Kevin McCallister was also Macaulay Culkin's breakout role; he owned the scenes with co-stars Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci.

Macaulay Culkin said co-star Joe Pesci got carried away while filming Home Alone's culminating scene. Speaking to fans during a Q&a (per The New York Times), Culkin recalled Pesci was so invested in playing the villain. "'He was trying to scare me," Culkin said. "He was like, 'I want to be menacing to this kid.'" While rehearsing a scene with co-star Daniel Stern, Pesci went overboard and actually bit Culkin's finger. "I have a scar," Culkin confirmed. "I saw [Pesci's] face — and I've never, ever seen Joe Pesci actually scared. Because he's like, 'I just bit a kid!'"

How Did Casper The Friendly Ghost Die?
Image
Casper the Friendly Ghost made his theatrical debut in I. Sparber's 1945 short "The Friendly Ghost," released by Famous Studios. The gimmick of the short was that a boy-like apparition named Casper, feeling lonely and wanting friends, would causally approach animals and adults to introduce himself only to see them flee in terror. He is, after all, a ghost. Only open-minded children could see that Casper wasn't a threat and befriend him.

The success of "The Friendly Ghost" led to 54 additional Famous Studios Casper shorts that lasted through 1959. Casper also began starring in a series of Harvey Comics in 1951, and the character's mythos expanded greatly. He soon became friends with a witch named Wendy and was bullied by some baddies called the Ghostly Trio. The comics and shorts also spawned multiple TV shows to feature the Friendly Ghost, mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, and his popularity was retained throughout the 1980s through incessant reruns.

There were several accusations against Jackson, most notably from Wade Robson and James Safechuck. Robson even went on to claim that Jackson replaced him with Culkin at the time. However, the Home Alone actor denied these claims.

“Why don’t you come over to my house?”: Most Home Alone Fans Don’t Know about Michael Jackson’s ‘Weird, Random’ Call to Macaulay Culkin
Image
Macaulay Culkin, the actor who reached extraordinary heights of fame and success with his tremendous portrayal of the genius Kevin McCallister in his version of the Home Alone saga, actually shared a rather peculiar relationship with Michael Jackson in the eyes of the public. That being said, most fans may not know that this friendship actually started with a phone call.

As Culkin himself admitted it, the pair probably wouldn’t have shared the kind of close relationship they did had it not been for one “weird, random” call that the child actor received from the now-deceased King of Pop. And, although this may sound similar to the rumors surrounding Jackson’s alleged abuse of youngsters, that’s hardly the case, and Culkin stands as a witness to this claim.

Thankfully for Sawa, Dr. Dre (who directed the video) was a fan of his work in Final Destination and suggested him instead. “There happened to be somebody in the casting office that knew somebody who was friends with me, and they called me that way… and it ended up working out pretty good,” Sawa explained, adding that the video was “one of the proudest things I’ve been a part of.

Why Night Court's John Larroquette Put A Stop To His Emmy Wins In The 80s
Image
"Night Court" was part of the legendary NBC Thursday night lineup back in the mid-1980s. It ran in a block with "The Cosby Show," "Cheers," and "Family Ties," a proud part of a sitcom renaissance that lasted through to the end of the decade. Of that lineup, "Night Court" was the black sheep, offering up broader characters, wackier scenarios, and a surrealist tone that kept it just a few steps removed from reality. The series was set in a Manhattan Criminal Court, but only during its night shift, when all the weird cases came in. Harry Anderson played Judge Harry Stone, although the late hours had made him playfully unbalanced. Also often on the night shift was prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), a lascivious narcissist and amusingly crude a-hole.

Larroquette was exceptional in the role. "Night Court" ran from 1984 to 1992, and Larroquette won Primetime Emmys four of those years,...

Why Macaulay Culkin Didn't Star In Home Alone 3
Image
Macaulay Culkin left the Home Alone franchise after the second movie, and his absence in Home Alone 3 was a major reason for its lackluster reception. Culkin retired from acting after his early success as a child actor, which drastically changed the future of the Home Alone franchise. Home Alone 3 failed to resonate with audiences, largely because it didn't have Culkin or any of the other original cast members, resulting in a significant drop in box office earnings compared to the previous films.

Despite being the star of the first two Home Alone movies as Kevin McCallister, Macaulay Culkin left the franchise after 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York — and despite over three decades passing since, many viewers still wonder why Kevin wasn't in Home Alone 3. The first Home Alone sees Kevin left behind when his family goes on vacation over Christmas, which leads to him...

Home Alone Stars Have Heartwarming Reunion At Macaulay Culkin Walk Of Fame Ceremony In Time For Christmas
Image
Two Home Alone cast members reunite at Macaulay Culkin's Walk of Fame ceremony, bringing heartwarming nostalgia. Culkin's role as Kevin in Home Alone launched his acting career, leading to further success and recognition. While the cast members have pursued different paths, seeing O'Hara and Culkin together after 30 years is a touching reminder of the movie's enduring impact.

Over 30 years after the movie became a holiday classic, two Home Alone cast reunite at Macualay Cuklin’s recent walk of fame ceremony. The 1990 Christmas comedy saw Culkin star as Kevin McCallister, a young boy inadvertently left by his family while they go on a vacation to Paris, only to have to contend with two home invaders, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Though scoring mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a major box office hit, becoming the highest-grossing comedy of all-time before being surpassed by 2011's The Hangover Part II.

From ‘Home Alone’ to Walk of Fame: Macaulay Culkin’s Rise from Child Star to Successfully Living Just Outside the Spotlight
Image
There are “child stars,” and then there are performers that start working during childhood only to become bona fide, beloved screen icons, enjoying long, varied careers throughout their lives. Following in the footsteps of Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood and Mickey Rooney, Macaulay Culkin has — for three decades and counting — been a contemporary standard bearer for that personal and professional journey.

Culkin became a full-fledged cultural phenomenon after the explosive commercial success of his fifth film, 1990’s “Home Alone,” which he made when he was just 10 years old. The film grossed $476 million worldwide, due in direct part to his mischievous-yet-vulnerable performance as Kevin McAllister. But beginning in his teenage years, Culkin began seeking projects that piqued his artistic interests rather than sustaining his immediate and colossal celebrity. Even without any expectation for those subsequent efforts to reach the same stratospheric heights as his early breakthrough, Culkin’s star wattage has barely flickered,...

What Happened To Macaulay Culkin?
Image
Macaulay Culkin took a break from acting in 1995, retreating from the pressures of early fame and personal challenges. Culkin returned to acting in the mid-2000s, taking on more mature and darker roles to shed his child star image. Culkin starred in American Horror Story and received praise for his compelling and nuanced performance, re-establishing himself as a versatile actor.

Macaulay Culkin was one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood at the age of just 10 years old, but the actor seemingly disappeared in the mid-'90s, raising the question of what happened to him. Culkin's meteoric rise to fame is synonymous with his portrayal of Kevin McCallister at the center of the Home Alone cast. ‘I Was a Teenage Slasher’ – Check Out the Cover and Read an Excerpt from Stephen Graham Jones’ New Novel [Exclusive]
Image
Few people love slashers as much as Nyt-bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones. Not only was his 2020 novel The Only Good Indians a slasher at its core, but slashers permeate every element of the Jade Daniels/Indian Lake trilogy that began with My Heart is a Chainsaw (our review). While that trilogy is poised to take a bow in March 2024, fret not, Stephen Graham Jones will next take on the summer slasher with I Was a Teenage Slasher.

Just in time for Halloween, Bloody Disgusting can exclusively reveal the cover and an excerpt for the upcoming ’80s set slasher novel, set to arrive on July 16, 2024.

‘Brainscan’ – This Nostalgic ’90s Gem Doubles as a Waking Nightmare
Image
Brainscan is one of those movies you would stumble on as a ’90s kid watching HBO, Cinemax or whatever other programming you weren’t supposed to be watching after your parents went to bed. The kind that you could tell right away was something darker than society would deem appropriate for someone of your age. The kind you knew would keep you up that night.

All of which made it impossible to turn off, of course.

But there’s a certain quality to Brainscan that felt still even more under the surface sinister than the other horror flicks I was used to at the time. This might sound silly considering the plot is about a misfit teenager who plays the hottest new horror video game advertised in Fangoria and ends up dealing with an almost cartoonish, mohawked, coulda been a guitar tech for Twisted Sister, Little Monsters type villain who...

Was Jenna Ortega in Iron Man 3?
Image
Jenna Ortega's minor role in Iron Man 3 kick-started her career and led to opportunities in renowned films and series like Insidious: Chapter 2 and Disney's Stuck in the Middle. Ortega's breakout role as Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's Wednesday brought her worldwide fame and critical acclaim, earning her a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination. While there is no official confirmation, there are rumors of Ortega playing White Tiger in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which would be a great opportunity for her to don a superhero costume and establish her place in the MCU.

Robert Downey Jr. received massive love for bringing the narcissistic and billionaire personality of Tony Stark on-screen in Iron Man (2008). Since then, the first MCU superhero has become a beloved one among fans worldwide, and his standalone films were major successes at the box office. In fact, at the height of the franchise's popularity,...

‘Tower of Terror’ – Revisiting Disney’s Original Ride-to-Movie Adaptation
Image
On October 26, 1997, Tower of Terror aired as ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney feature presentation, initiating a trend that would go on to shift the paradigm that had long existed between Disney’s immersive theme park attractions and their successful movie slate. The line between rides and movies was blurring and soon the path that carried the silver screen to the realm of reality would no longer be one-way.

Twenty six years later, the studio is on the cusp of their twelfth ride adaptation and their second big screen attempt at a blockbuster Haunted Mansion movie. Far removed from the made-for-tv Steve Guttenberg starring spook fest that served as a gateway horror flick to so many young and impressionable minds, these multimedia ticket drivers have left behind low budget simplicity in lieu of multi-million dollar CGI driven set pieces and A-list casts. Still, with its on-ride filming sites, colorful...
