Steven Christou is an Australian actor, poet, director, writer, and artist of Greek heritage. He is most well-known for his prominent role as Clayton in the six-episode TV series Single, Out (2022) by critically-acclaimed director Lee Galea. The first season is now streaming on Emmy Award-winning network Here TV in the US and elsewhere around the world.
Other noteworthy screen work includes his performances in BUFTA Nominated short film 'Australia High' (2019) by Oliver John and 'Oops!' (2020), an experimental short by Cassandra Tytler that saw a Mexico City Independent Film Fest Honourable Mention. Christou's comedic talents are on display in Brekkie (2020) and Brekkie (2020), two short films by director Jonah Elias.
Christou is a keen poet, drawing satire from the mundane and revealing a complexity to the every-day; with work that spans mediums, he creates primarily through prose poetry and experimental performance, and often blends multiple different forms across the same artwork. This ambitious approach to his art practice can be seen in his multimedia poetry collection 'Cold Wind Melody' (2022) and its sequel 'To Our Summer Nights' (2023). He wrote and directed companion piece short films for both bodies of work.
Christou showcased his academic prowess in 2023, receiving a creative arts Honours degree with First Class Honours from Deakin University. His final project At Arm's Length (2024) was a multimedia piece deftly combining music, live performance, poetry, and film -- a body of work that not only underscored Christou's ability and desire to create eclectic, forward-thinking art that seamlessly oscillates between mediums, but his proficiency in these various art forms as well. Christou co-wrote and co-produced the show's five original songs. Both a filmed version of the performance and the songs would go on to premiere at the prestigious Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts: National Graduate Show 2024.
