Exclusive: As Jimmy and Kayla’s new assistant Randi, Robby Hoffman has been a scene-stealer on the current fourth season of Max. The HBO-Max comedy executive team has taken notice, giving the writer-comedian a chance to headline her own series.
HBO has put in development Unentitled, a comedy starring Hoffman. It will be co-written by her and Karey Dornetto (Fallout). The duo will executive produce alongside veteran HBO-based producer Carolyn Strauss who is better known for her work on sweeping drama series like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us but also recently executive produced another comedian-led HBO comedy series, Somebody Somewhere starring Bridget Everett.
In Unentitled, Hoffman plays a version of herself. It follows contrarian Robby Hoffman as she pursues her dream of making a living as a comedian, trying to bend the world to her will.

FX is about to enter a new era.
The network is grappling with how to replace a number of its long-running hits including Snowfall, Mayans M.C., What We Do in the Shadows, Reservation Dogs, Archer and Dave.
As such, John Landgraf, chairman of FX Content & FX Productions, is “sweating bullets” as he and his team search for new series to replace these shows.
“There was a time when you had these time slots and something was going in that time slot — it might be good, it might be bad, but it wasn’t going to be a color bar in that time slot,” he told Deadline. “Now if we put things on the air or on streaming that are bad, it tarnishes 20 years of hard work we’ve done to try to create a brand that’s synonymous with quality.”

One year since the final season of “Broad City” debuted, Comedy Central is releasing its heir apparent. “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” makes a few tweaks to the formula, including a singular borough (rather than Queens and Brooklyn), a singular lead (Awkwafina steps in for the double act of Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson), and a familial backdrop over a singular friendship. But the new comedy is still about a wonderfully weird young woman sifting through her stagnant twenties, trying to find a direction for her life as she snags odd jobs, gets high, and lives as large as possible on a tight budget.
Setting aside the comparison, which does “Nora From Queens” zero favors, there are still nagging problems that hinder even Awkwafina’s awkward charms. Nora’s arcs are thin and change sporadically, while the bloated editing can’t capture the zany comedic energy it’s chasing. Fans...

In the summer of 2018, Awkwafina exploded onto movie screens with scene-hijacking turns in Ocean’s Eight and Crazy Rich Asians. She seemed the kind of force of nature, akin to Robin Williams or Melissa McCarthy, who was so full of comic life, she could not only generate laughs out of thin air, but often shone brightest when left alone onscreen. Still, there were moments in both of those films — particularly the Crazy Rich Asians sequence where her character and Nico Santos’ help Constance Wu’s Rachel get dressed up for the...

On Monday, Comedy Central released the official trailer for “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” the highly-anticipated sitcom created by and starring rapper-actress Awkwafina.
Inspired by Awkwafina’s real-life experiences growing up in Flushing, Queens, “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” follows twentysomething Nora Lin (Awkwafina) as she attempts to find a purpose in her life and clumsily navigate her way through young adulthood. All while she still lives with her dad (Bd Wong) and possibly over-supportive grandmother (Lori Tan Chinn).
In the trailer, which you can watch below, Nora sobs as she confides in her friend Chenise (Makeda Declet). “I wish I had purpose like you, you dumb b****,” she cries. So it’s time for Nora to find a suitable job, but if it were just that easy, Nora wouldn’t exactly be where she is now. After all, as she tells her cousin (Bowen Yang), she doesn’t even know her social security number.

Natasha Lyonne is set to direct an episode of Comedy Central’s as-yet-untitled Awkwafina project. This immediately follows Lyonne’s stint helming an episode of Hulu’s High Fidelity reboot series. She will also direct an episode of Shrill, the streamer’s Aidy Bryant-starrer.
“I was directing High Fidelity mostly in Brooklyn, and now I’m directing Awkwafina mostly in Queens, so I’m really making my way through the boroughs,” Lyonne joked to Deadline. She will direct episode 104, entitled “Paperwork,” of the Awkwafina project.
“It’s been great,” Lyonne said of these latest directing opportunities. “I’m getting in my hours. I dropped out of film school when I was 16. I dropped out of Tisch. I was in the filmmaking program as a film and philosophy double major. I really thought that I was going to read all these philosophical works and then I was going to make movies about them.
