TV’s best scribes are getting their moment in the spotlight: The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for the 2025 Writers Guild Awards ceremony, which is to be held Saturday, Feb. 15.

The TV nominees include a number of first-timers, including the final season of Paramount+’s supernatural drama Evil, HBO’s Batman spinoff The Penguin and freshman series like Prime Video’s Fallout and FX’s Shōgun. As such, John Landgraf, chairman of FX Content & FX Productions, is “sweating bullets” as he and his team search for new series to replace these shows.

“There was a time when you had these time slots and something was going in that time slot — it might be good, it might be bad, but it wasn’t going to be a color bar in that time slot,” he told Deadline. “Now if we put things on the air or on streaming that are bad, it tarnishes 20 years of hard work we’ve done to try to create a brand that’s synonymous with quality.”

FX has ordered a pilot for this latest remake attempt written by Atlanta and What We Do In The Shadows exec producer Stefani Robinson.

It marks the latest attempt for the Channel 4 cult classic.

The Disney-owned network had a script in development in 2019 from Portlandia and Superstore writer and co-exec producer Karey Dornetto. Starz attempted a remake in 2016, while Fox took a run at a pilot, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki, in 2005 and Spike gave it a shot in 2008.

The Disney-backed basic-cable network has handed out a pilot order to an update of the cult favorite U.K. series from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. Atlanta grad Stefani Robinson will pen the script and exec produce the half-hour comedy that will be produced in-house via her overall deal with FX Productions.

Armstrong, who has an exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO, is attached to exec produce but will not be involved with the series given his commitments to Disney’s corporate rival and the premium cable network’s Emmy-winning drama Succession.

The series, which is inspired by Awkwafina’s real-life growing up in Queens. N.Y., centers on her character, Nora Lin, who lives at home with her dad (Bd Wong) and grandmother (Lori Tan Chinn). Bowen Yang also stars as her cousin.

Natasha Lyonne is set to direct an episode of Comedy Central’s as-yet-untitled Awkwafina project. This immediately follows Lyonne’s stint helming an episode of Hulu’s High Fidelity reboot series. She will also direct an episode of Shrill, the streamer’s Aidy Bryant-starrer.

“I was directing High Fidelity mostly in Brooklyn, and now I’m directing Awkwafina mostly in Queens, so I’m really making my way through the boroughs,” Lyonne joked to Deadline. She will direct episode 104, entitled “Paperwork,” of the Awkwafina project.

“It’s been great,” Lyonne said of these latest directing opportunities. “I’m getting in my hours. I dropped out of film school when I was 16. I dropped out of Tisch. I was in the filmmaking program as a film and philosophy double major. I really thought that I was going to read all these philosophical works and then I was going to make movies about them.

Korean-American rapper Jon Park (aka Dumbfoundead) is set to recur on Comedy Central’s upcoming scripted series Awkwafina. He will join the titular actor-rapper Awkwafina in the series which follows a twenty-something Nora living in Queens, striving for a larger than life existence while living with her father and grandmother.
