It’s packed, people throwing out mash-ups: One of my favorites that came out of one of these meetings was Sharkcano.

Discovery Channel hammered for 'Megalodon' shark special
A Discovery Channel special that speculated about whether a giant prehistoric shark could still exist today has drawn a passionate response from viewers — both good and bad.

The program, Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives, opened Discovery’s annual Shark Week this weekend. With an estimated 4.8 million viewers, it had the largest audience of any show in the 26 years that Discovery has made Shark Week a part of its summer programming.

Yet it drew a heated response online from viewers who said airing a “mockumentary” that talks seriously about the existence of a creature known only from its fossils compromises the network’s reputation.

Discovery Responds to Shark Week 'Megalodon' Outcry
Discovery Communications is standing by its Megalodon faux-documentary. Shark Week executive producer Michael Sorensen defended Sunday's two-hour special, which included found footage and so-called "evidence" that the prehistoric shark with teeth the size of an adult hand was very much alive. (The Megalodon lived approximately 1.5 million years ago.) "With a whole week of Shark Week programming ahead of us, we wanted to explore the possibilities of Megalodon," Sorensen said in a statement. "It's one of the most debated shark discussions of all time, can Megalodon exist today? It's Ultimate Shark Week fantasy. The

'Shark Week,' Late Night Style
Shark After Dark (2013)
New York — Comic Josh Wolf may not want to hear the word "shark" after next week, much less bump into one.

Discovery has given him a unique assignment: host an hour-long talk show for five nights in a row on the menacing beast, a new wrinkle in the network's annual "Shark Week."

"Shark After Dark" will debut Sunday at 11 p.m. Edt.

Wolf, who's a recurring character on Fox's "Raising Hope" and perhaps best known as a regular guest on E! Entertainment's "Chelsea Lately," said he's looking forward to the challenge.

"Not only have I always been fascinated with `Shark Week,' I've always wanted to do a late-night talk thing," he said. "That's been on the bucket list. This kills two birds with one stone."

So how do you fill an hour each night with chatter about a creature that does all its talking with its teeth?

Wolf will...

Sharknado (2013)
Shark Week Should Thank 'Sharknado'
Sharknado (2013)
New York — Colliding stunts on Discovery and The Weather Channel next week feel like another "Sharknado."

Discovery is holding its 26th annual Shark Week of programming at the same time The Weather Channel is airing Hurricane Week.

The weather folks can't resist a joke about it, airing a promotional ad that depicts a giant shark flying away in a stiff wind that references both Shark Week and "Sharknado," the Syfy network movie that has become a campy classic this summer.

"If having a little fun with this very serious topic helps get a little more attention, we're all for it," said David Clark, Weather Channel president.

Shark Week is a mixture of fun and science, even including a shark talk show this summer. Discovery's embrace of the week's pop culture status was signaled with the Snuffy the Seal ad that has received more than 5.5 million views on YouTube and the Discovery website.
