‘Shattered’ VOD Review

Stars: Cameron Monaghan, Frank Grillo, John Malkovich, Sasha Luss, Lilly Krug, Ash Santos, James C. Burns, Dat Phan | Written by David Loughery | Directed by Luis Prieto

Thirteen years after his last screenplay credit, writer David Loughery, who wrote blockbuster 90s action films like Passenger 57 and The Three Musketeers, returned to movies with Lakeview Terrace in 2008, and since then he seems to have specialised in films that feature characters with ulterior motives, who aren’t who they think you are; and with Obsessed he almost single-handedly looked to revive the low-budget thriller genre that was so prevalent during the era he last penned scripts for Hollywood. That determination continued with his scripts for films like Penthouse North and The Intruder; in 2020 he spiced things ups throwing in some eroticism with the script for Fatale and now comes Shattered, which takes the genre to its Basic Instinct-style roots. Though to be...

Shattered review – John Malkovich has bizarre cameo in oddball erotic thriller
Luis Prieto
Luis Prieto’s psychodrama features a promising turn from Lilly Krug but it goes limp in end despite a decent vicious streak

You’ve not known humiliation until you’ve had John Malkovich pant “Walk of shame!” at you as you skulk back to your motel room. That is one bizarre moment in this halting and derivative thriller, which exists somewhere on the continuum between erotic and psychological. Malkovich puts in a batty turn as a motel owner that would have had “paycheque” written all over it except for his co-producer credit.

The shamee in question is Sky (Lilly Krug), a permanent resident at the motel who, thanks to a chance encounter in a supermarket wine aisle, has just bagged the attentions of local tech millionaire Chris (Cameron Monaghan). Living alone in a wood-panelled designer home and estranged from his wife and kid, this emotionally constipated app developer is obsessed with his security system.

‘Shattered’ Review: A Twisty Tale of Secrets, Clichés & Stock Lifetime Characters
Image
Covid has changed our lives, our schools, our offices, and our habits. But January? Luis Prieto‘s “Shattered” is proof that January is the same as it ever was. It’s a twisty tale of secrets, cliches, and Lifetime characters that could only come out this month–it’s impossible to imagine this coming out in December, that’s for sure.

It starts on a surreal, almost laughable note when recently-divorced Chris (Cameron Monaghan) runs into a woman named Sky (Lily Krug), who is looking for a bottle of wine to get hammered.

‘Thelma’: Kathy Bates, John Malkovich & Lewis Pullman To Star In Indie From Director Ken Kwapis
Image
Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy winner Kathy Bates, two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich and Lewis Pullman have signed on to star in Thelma, an indie directed by two-time Emmy nom Ken Kwapis.

Thelma recounts the true story of the mother of John Kennedy Toole (Pullman), the Pulitzer Prize winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces. Toole died by suicide before finding a home for his masterpiece, and his mother Thelma (Bates) made it her life’s mission, through outrageous gamesmanship, to see the book published. She eventually succeeded in getting the manuscript into the hands of writer Walker Percy (Malkovich), who became the novel’s champion. It would be published in 1980, eleven years after Ken’s death, thereafter becoming a widely celebrated cult classic.

Black List screenwriter Andrew Farotte penned the original screenplay.

‘Shattered’ Review: A Memorable Femme Fatale Does Not an Erotic Thriller Make
Image
If you’ve been awaiting the triumphant return of the erotic thriller, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that “Shattered” is very much an erotic thriller, complete with femme fatale and out-of-his-depth protagonist. The bad news is that, despite a game performance from Lilly Krug, the next “Basic Instinct” this is not. Written by David Loughery and directed by Luis Prieto, “Shattered” comes across as an update on the thrillers of yore — just with the wrong elements updated.

That rule about something seeming too good to be true? Let’s just say it applies when you meet a beautiful woman at the grocery store, her Uber cancels on her, and she isn’t in the mood to go home because her troublesome roommate is there. To its benefit, “Shattered” keeps you on your toes from the very first despite this fishy setup, training you to...

Cameron Monaghan on Getting Tortured for His Art in ‘Shattered’ and Saying Goodbye to ‘Shameless’
Image
Cameron Monaghan must be a glutton for punishment.

In “Shattered,” the actor plays a wealthy tech guru named Chris who comes to really, really, sincerely regret his fling with the beautiful and mysterious Sky (Lilly Krug). Their meet-cute in the aisle of a supermarket quickly devolves into kidnapping and extortion, with Chris finding himself tied up and brutalized in creatively horrific ways. Think of it as “Fatal Attraction” with buckets of blood.

“Shattered,” which definitely isn’t for the faint of stomach, opens on Jan. 14. Monaghan spoke with Variety about what attracted him to the horror-thriller, working with John Malkovich, and saying goodbye to “Shameless,” the Showtime series on which he memorably played Ian Gallagher, the tough-talking gay man from the wrong side of Chicago who finds happiness with charming delinquent Mickey (Noel Fisher).

Why did you want to make “Shattered”?

“Shattered” came to me pretty late in the process of its development.

Kidnap: Director Luis Prieto Talks About Car Stunts, Halle Berry And Doing Everything To Save A Child
Mothers are relentless when it comes to possibly hurting their child, and these kidnappers didn’t think a mother would do anything, and everything, to get her child back.

Halle Berry stars in this action thriller Kidnap with the basic plot of a small band of child kidnappers taking a young child from his mother. The mother would pursue these villains in a high-speed car chase--causing mayhem and destruction with every turn.

The film also stars Sage Correa, Chris McGinn and Lew Temple. It is directed by Luis Prieto (Pusher).

Lrm had an exclusive sit-down interview with director Luis Prieto late last month. He talked about the realistic car stunt scenes, no CGI involved, Halle Berry behind the wheel and what mothers would do if their child was kidnapped.

Kidnap is playing in theaters nationwide today.

Read our conversation below:

Lrm: This film was done back in 2014, right? It’s...

Female of the Species: Berry Brings It in Middlebrow Action Drama

Playing like a throwback to 1990s studio thrillers starring Oscar caliber actresses navigating survival under extreme duress or seeking vengeance against those who have harmed their families, Luis Prieto’s Kidnap, starring a vibrant Halle Berry, satisfies the urges of B-movie melodramas Hollywood stopped churning out long ago.

Halle Berry in Kidnap (2017)
Review: A Halle Berry Vehicle with Four Flat Tires, ‘Kidnap’ Is the Worst Movie of the Summer
Halle Berry in Kidnap (2017)
Screeching into theaters towards the end of an unusually strong summer movie season, “Kidnap” is here to remind a nation of spoiled filmgoers that yes, movies really can be this bad. “The Emoji Movie” might have been a boring and brazenly cynical piece of corporate propaganda, but at least it had the courtesy to be offensive. “Kidnap,” on the other hand, doesn’t have the the courtesy to be much of anything.

A Halle Berry vehicle with four flat tires, this oppressively half-assed thriller is fueled by a premise it never bothers to develop into an actual plot. Berry, slumming it as hard as any Oscar winner has ever slummed it before, plays Karla Dyson, a divorced diner waitress who’s struggling to maintain custody over her six-year-old son, Frankie (Sage Correa).

Unfortunately for Karla, that struggle is about to get very real. Her husband, it turns out, isn’t...

Thrilling new trailer for Halle Berry actioner, Kidnap, has arrived
Author: Scott Davis

A new trailer has arrived for action-thriller Kidnap, which is released in cinemas later this summer, and you can view it in the player below!

Academy Award Winner Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball, X-Men: Days of Future Past) stars in this thrilling chase film as a single mother who, after her young son disappears, she takes it upon herself to chase down those who have taken him by any means necessary. The film is directed by Luis Prieto (Pusher) and co-stars Dana Gourrier (The Hateful Eight) and Christopher Berry (Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Kidnap Trailer #2 Sends Halle Berry on a Race Against Time
Halle Berry in Kidnap (2017)
Aviron Films has released the second trailer for the upcoming thriller Kidnap, starring Halle Berry, before it hits theaters this summer. Unlike most mothers who go to the police right away, Halle Berry's Karla Dyson takes matters into her own hands and chases down these kidnappers herself. What she lacks in any sort of training, or "special skills" a la Taken, Karla makes up for with pure determination and an unrelenting drive, as you can see in this trailer.

A typical afternoon in the park turns into a nightmare for single mom Karla Dyson (Academy Award winner Halle Berry) when her son suddenly disappears. Without a cell phone and knowing she has no time to wait for police help, Karla jumps in her own car and sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers. A relentless, edge-of-your seat chase ensues, where Karla must risk everything to not lose sight of her son.

Halle Berry Never Stops Fighting In New Trailer For ‘Kidnap’
Originally scheduled to be released last December, no one really noticed when “Kidnap” starring Halle Berry didn’t arrive in theaters. It looks like straight-to-video fare, and we’re sure even Berry herself won’t be highlighting this on her CV, especially with the potential awards contender “Kings” on the horizon. But in case you cared, the movie is finally arriving and….it still looks pretty bad.

Directed by Luis Prieto (who helmed the remake of Nicolas Winding Refn‘s “Pusher“), the movie has a pretty simple, sorta Liam Neeson-esque premise: a woman’s son gets kidnapped, and rather wait for the slow wheels of justice to turn, she takes matters into her own hands.

Halle Berry Goes Berserk in Intense New Trailer for 'Kidnap' Thriller
"As long as my son is in that car, I will not stop! Wherever you go, I will be right behind you!" Another new trailer has debuted for the kidnapping action thriller titled Kidnap. The film stars Halle Berry as a passionate mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son. This movie was originally supposed to open last December, but got pushed back with the Relativity fiasco. Now it's finally opening in August of this year for those still curious. This new trailer is a rehash of the first trailer with most of the same footage, but different edits. Also starring Sage Correa, Lew Temple, Dana Gourrier, Christopher Berry, and Chris McGinn. I like the intensity of these trailers, it's a good sell, I just hope the movie is worth the wait. Here's the second official trailer for Luis Prieto's Kidnap, direct from Aviron's YouTube: "Let me...

Intense New Trailer For Halle Berry's New Action Thriller Kidnap
A second trailer has been released for Halle Berry's new thriller Kidnap which follows a single mother’s heroic attempt to save her kidnapped son. It looks like she's going to go to great lengths to save her child. She gets herself into some pretty crazy situations. This actually looks like it could be a really good tense action flick.

A typical afternoon in the park turns into a nightmare for single mom Karla Dyson (Berry) when her son suddenly disappears. Without a cell phone and knowing she has no time to wait for police help, Karla jumps in her own car and sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers. After Watching This New Trailer For Kidnap, Remind Us Never To Piss Off Halle Berry
Judging by this trailer for upcoming film Kidnap, it’s probably best not to tangle with Halle Berry. After her son is snatched from an amusement park, she sets off on a one-woman crusade to rescue him. This appears to send her on what can only be described as a roaring rampage of revenge, which apparently leads to high-octane car chases and brutal axe chopping, as she harnesses her inner Jason Voorhees and shows these kidnappers that you absolutely do not mess with her kid.

Personally, I think this looks pretty great and I’m a sucker for action movies where villains seriously underestimate the murderous talents of women (You’re Next is a particular fave). The film comes from director Luis Prieto, whose previous pedigree includes 2012’s underrated Pusher (produced by Nicholas Winding Refn), so there’s definitely reason to be optimistic here. At least, before you consider its production troubles.
