CNN is kicking off its comprehensive coverage of Election Day two full days before most Americans head to the polls.

Action icon John Woo reimagines The Killer, his seminal 1989 masterpiece for modern audiences, with decidedly mixed results. The plot updates the setting from Hong Kong to Paris with Nathalie Emmanuel playing the role that immortalized Chow Yun-fat as a genre legend. That in itself shouldn't be controversial except to the legion of misogynistic haters who become apoplectic every time a woman steps in the shoes of something previously done by a man. Emmanuel is good here and not the film's primary problem. The lack of creativity in the action is where the fault lies. The Killer ticks every stylistic box for die-hard enthusiasts, but doesn't do anything we haven't seen before.

Over the years a number of filmmakers took a stab at adapting the beloved Hong Kong action movie, about a hitman (played by frequent Woo collaborator Chow Yun-Fat) who accidentally blinds a young girl, including “Alien” principals Walter Hill and David Giler, “Top Gun” writers Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., and Korean-American filmmaker John H. The director revisits his 1989 classic with a Paris-set update that doesn’t attempt anything all that daring but reconfirms his action credentials

It’s only fair: after years of the world ripping off the action-movie style of Hong Kong film-maker John Woo, why not let Woo take a crack at one himself? The idea for an English-language remake of The Killer, Woo’s seminal 1989 action picture starring his frequent muse Chow Yun-fat, has been kicking around Hollywood for the vast majority of the original movie’s lifespan, and now arrives as an experiment of cross-cultural translation: American writers Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken and Brian Helgeland have adapted Woo’s original Hong Kong screenplay to a Paris setting, featuring characters of English, Irish, French and American origins, handed back to Woo for re-reinterpretation. (And – fittingly for such an odd project but unfortunately for the big-screen grandeur of even the lower-rent Woo movies – a streaming-exclusive debut.

If you ask any action fan hailing from any country, that has some kind of internet connection or cable television, about the most influential director in the genre, they’ll definitely talk endlessly about John Woo. Before checking out his Hong Kong productions, I was watching his Hollywood films on loop. I was mesmerized by Woo’s use of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s mullet in Hard Target. I was forced to watch Broken Arrow multiple times by one of my friends, and even though it didn’t hit me during the first few viewings, eventually, the utter insanity on display blew me away. Obviously, I wasn’t ready for the bonkers premise of Face/Off and the even more bonkers performances from Nic Cage and John Travolta. I didn’t like Mission: Impossible 2 initially because it was so different from Brian De Palma’s work, but now I think it’s a masterpiece.

It’s been more than 30 years since John Woo first came to Hollywood, and it often feels like he’s been looking for a way back to Hong Kong ever since — or at least a way back to the iconic action filmmaker he was when he worked there in the ’80s and early ’90s. Orgiastically blending the muted cool of a Jean-Pierre Melville neo-noir with the explosive melodrama of a Martin Scorsese crime epic and the florid grandiosity of a Chinese opera, Woo’s elevated style clashed with the meat-and-potatoes ethos of American blockbusters. The same ecstasy that defined Cantonese-language classics like “Hard Boiled” and “A Better Tomorrow” seemed more like self-parody after being translated into “Mission: Impossible 2,” and last year’s dreadfully generic “Silent Night” suggested that Woo had lost whatever was left of his voice as an artist.

John Woo’s Hollywood remake of his 1989 Heroic Bloodshed masterpiece The Killer, after languishing in development hell for almost as long as the original has existed, at long last sees the light of day. Relocating the setting from Hong Kong to Paris, Woo otherwise sticks to the original story, in which a contract killer, Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel), inadvertently blinds bystander Jenn (Diana Silvers) during a hit, and her refusal to murder the woman to tie up loose ends ultimately brings her into an unlikely alliance with a noble cop, Sey (Omar Sy).

Woo wastes little time showcasing his visual signatures, stuffing the first few minutes of The Killer, depicting Zee inside a church, with gliding tracking shots and low-angle compositions that immediately paint Zee and Sey as heroic. Oh, and there are doves—or, at least, one dove and two pigeons. The action also comes early and often, and Woo still delivers it with panache.

Trap is a psychological mystery thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The 2024 film follows the story of Cooper Adams, a family man with dark secrets as he goes to a pop concert with his teenage daughter and realizes that the concert is a trap laid out by the FBI to catch a serial killer called the Butcher. Trap stars Josh Hartnett in the lead role with Saleka, Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, Alison Pill, and Vanessa Smythe starring in supporting roles. John Woo is, of course, one of the forefathers of the modern action film, helping to create an entire subgenre known as Heroic Bloodshed.

From his earliest martial arts film Hand Of Death through the legendary Hard Boiled and The Killer to his underrated English language debut Broken Arrow and blockbusters like Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, Woo’s action sequences are as majestic as they are brutally balletic.

The Killer, released in 1989, followed Chow Yun-Fat as a troubled hitman who injures a singer during a bloody shootout. He must commit one last hit to raise the money for her operation, without which she will go blind. It’s often cited as one of the greatest action films ever made – if you’ve never had the pleasure, it really is incredible.

John Woo is reimagining his 1989 Hong Kong classic The Killer for a new English-language remake, and he’s swapping the gender of the titular assassin.

Now, British actress Nathalie Emmanuel will take the lead as Woo’s multi-faceted action star, now named Zee instead of the original’s Ah Jong. The remake will also feature Sam Worthington, Diana Silvers, French actors Omar Sy, Grégory Montel, and Saïd Taghmaoui, and ’90s soccer icon-turned-actor Eric Cantona.

The trailer shows Zee at the height of her powers as an adept assassin in the Parisian underground, kicking ass and taking names — when she refuses to kill a young woman, however, she faces threats from both the Parisian police and local criminal organizations. “Never send boys to do a woman’s job,” Zee says amidst high-flying action and tension-ridden sequences.

John Woo may not be nearly so prolific as in his heyday, making two films in less than one year notable. “Notable” if, like me, you thought Silent Night was an absolute blast, even something of a reinvention for the man who’s done more than anybody to invent contemporary action cinema. That I am somewhat lonely in this stance does little favor for The Killer, a title that suggests one needs to adjust their computer screen if not for the fact that Woo has indeed remade one of his most essential films. Nor is its relegation to straight-to-Peacock streaming doing much confidence, but a first trailer ahead of its August 23 debut highlights certain action beats a cut above its current brethren.

The unexpected death of political pundit Alice Stewart has drawn immediate response from her colleagues in the CNN newsroom and beyond.

Stewart was found dead outdoors in her Bellevue neighborhood in northern Virginia early Saturday morning. No foul play is suspected, and officers believe a medical emergency occurred with the 58-year-old.

She was a regular contributor to CNN and had a strong social media presence. Stewart also built a lengthy resume as a political communications head on several campaigns.

The Wattpad/Webtoons and Grave Weaver-created series “I’m the Grim Reaper” is nearing its 200th episode, and it’s also getting a new TV series adaptation with talented names behind it. Deadline reports that celebrated filmmaker Sam Raimi is teaming up with 10 Cloverfield Lane scribes Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken on the new series.

The series follows “Scarlet, a young woman who wakes up in the ninth circle of hell with no idea how she got there. Satan offers to send Scarlet back to Earth if she’ll work as his reaper. But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared.”

The story is said to fit perfectly into “Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.”

Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi will executive produce the series with Weaver, who’ll also team on the development process.

Fox is developing a one-hour drama titled “Borrowed Time,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The series hails from writers and executive producers David Slack, Josh Campbell, and Matt Stuecken. McG is also an executive producer along with Mary Viola and Corey Marsh via Wonderland Sound and Vision. Wonderland is currently under a non-exclusive broadcast direct development deal with Fox.

Omar Sy (Jurassic World) will also be starring in the Peacock film.

For years, director John Woo has been developing a remake of his awesome 1989 film The Killer (buy it Here). At one point, Lupita Nyong’o was signed on to play the assassin role that had been played by Chow Yun-Fat in the original film. That version of the project fell apart when Nyong’o had to step away due to scheduling issues – but Woo just dusted himself off and kept working on the remake. Last summer, it was announced that Lupin‘s Omar Sy had signed on to star in the film, and now Deadline reports that Sy is being joined in the cast by Nathalie Emmanuel of Game of Thrones and the Fast and Furious franchise.

Details on the roles Sy and Emmanuel will be playing in the remake of The Killer have not been revealed.

Alec Baldwin has officially been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Charges were formally filed against Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who both face two counts of involuntary manslaughter, on Tuesday after Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced criminal charges against both on Jan. 19.

Notably, prosecutors charged Baldwin as both an actor and producer for Rust.

As an actor, Baldwin should’ve assumed the gun he was handling was loaded with live rounds and known that “the first rule of gun safety is never to point a gun at someone you don’t intend on shooting,” reads a statement of probable cause. He also neglected to undergo “required firearms training prior to the commencement of filming,” even “after [Gutierrez-Reed] requested more training.”

Josh Campbell will lead CNN’s new “Guns in America” beat, one of the new initiatives announced earlier this year by CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht.

Providing reporting and analysis to the beat will be figures from a range of points of view, including Stephen Gutowski, the founder of firearms reporting site Reload; Jennifer Mascia from The Trace, which covers the impact of gun violence; and Abené Clayton, reporter on the The Guardian’s Guns and Lies in America project.

Universal has announced that Lupin‘s Omar Sy will lead John Woo’s reimagining of his 1989 crime drama The Killer for Peacock.

The original film written and directed by Woo watches as the disillusioned assassin Ah Jong (Chow Yun-fat) accepts one last hit, in hopes of using his earnings to restore vision to the singer (Sally Yeh) he accidentally blinded. Details as to the reimagining’s plot have not been disclosed. But Woo returns to direct the pic announced earlier this year as one of three Universal originals set to debut on Peacock in 2023. He also serves as its producer.

The screenplay was written by writing partners Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane), as well as Eran Creevy and Brian Helgeland. Exclusive: Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) is in advanced talks and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Lin Shaye (Insidious) are attached to star in action director Renny Harlin’s (Cliffhanger) horror-thriller Carrier, scripted by the 10 Cloverfield Lane writing team of Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.

In Carrier, when a mysterious phenomenon leads to mass chaos, a splintering family escapes to a small island…but their troubles are only beginning.

The movie is among the first projects for Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin’s recently minted sales firm Sentient Pictures International, which is handling world rights at the virtual EFM, which wraps this week.

Principal photography is slated to commence in fall 2022 in Europe and will be produced by Extraordinary Entertainment’s Harlin and Daljit DJ Parmar, alongside Spi’s Pierre Morel, Renee Tab and Tuffin.

Executive producers will be Michael Yeates, Campbell, Stuecken, Dimiter Nikolov, Andrew Marcus, Andy Schefter and Rob Van Norden.

Andy Cheng has earned tremendous kudos as the fight choreographer of the bus scene in Marvel’s recent “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” The scene took nearly a year to plan and execute, and serves to demonstrate Simu Liu’s previously-hidden skills to an open-mouthed Awkwafina, and has since been released by Marvel as a standalone YouTube clip.

Cheng is now hard at work trying to shape the next Asian superhero as action director, stunt coordinator and fight choreographer on “Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya,” a live action adaptation of hit Japanese animated property “Saint Seiya.” The film wrapped up shooting last week in Budapest, Hungary.

“We don’t have the same amount of time or available budget as on ‘Shang Chi.’ But the goal is absolutely the same,” Cheng told Variety. “To craft something very unique that is rooted in Asian culture and has universal appeal.
