Dubai Film Market is introducing a selection of Indian projects for the first time this year through a partnership with Europe’s Pjlf Three Rivers Residency.

The five projects are being scripted by hot new talents such as Kanu Behl, whose debut feature Titli premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2014, and Raj Rishi More, whose project is being produced by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra.

The Three Rivers residency provides writer-directors with a month-long distraction-free space to work on their scripts in the Italian countryside, with the help of an expert mentor, before presenting their projects at Diff. The Jhalak family went out of their way last weekend by giving out some amazing filmy performances, and now it was time to get all dramatic! The challenge for the week being Nautanki, the contestants decided to make sure they disguise themselves in such a way that the stage is set and re-set on fire after every act!

Drama hit the stage with an Afro act performed by Drashti and Salman, dressed up as birds. Amazing postures, such perfect disguise and great choreography made their act very eye catching. Knowing this couple’s improvement graph so far, their performance was appreciated and they scored 30 on 30. Following them were Karanvir and Sneha, with a Laavni act. Karanvir turned ‘Kavya’ took breaths away with a hot booty shake and really great Lavni moves. Finally moving on from his ‘24’ fixation, Karanvir broke his own record as the duo scored 27 on 30.

Shabana Azmi, Irrfan Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Nandita Das, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Seema Biswas will star in the English language film. The film is being shot in Sri Lanka because Mehta has sworn off India following her nightmare experience shooting Water at Varanasi locations. Water was subsequently shot in Sri Lanka. But Midnight's Children could yet run into problems because in the late 1990s the BBC was planning to film a five-part mini-series of the novel with Rahul Bose in the lead, but due to pressure from the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, the filming permit was revoked and the project was cancelled. Mehta and Rushdie have been working together on the screenplay for the past two years.

If I were to pick up one Malayalam film , that is truly a landmark , my choice would unhesitatingly be John Abraham’s 1986 black and white political reportage Amma Ariyan ( Report to Mother ). John who died young in May 1987, I would recall with fond memories as an “erratic genius”. All his films (he made only four features) are master works of imperfection. He never believed in cosmetic perfection in Cinema let alone in Life itself. No wonder he could not get along with self styled “ perfectionists “ who loathed him when he was alive and struggling but were quick to join the bandwagon to sing euologies, once he is no longer there.

The film is based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight Ic-814 in 1999 while on its way from Kathmandu to New Delhi on Christmas Eve. It was forced to land in three different airports -- Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai -- before spending a week on the tarmac in Kandahar with 186 hostages on board.

Ananya will begin shooting for the movie when she has completed her current commitments, including Krishna’s upcoming Seedan.
