Police procedurals are a dime a dozen on primetime television. It's an inherently cinematic profession with chases and gun fights that get viewers invested from week to week. As such, it's a pleasant surprise when one turns out to be actually entertaining, which is a far easier task when you have the ever-charismatic Nathan Fillion at the helm.
"The Rookie" proves how you can teach an old dog new tricks, as John Nolan (Fillion) moves from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles to join the city's police force despite being 45 years old. He's much older than the much younger rookies on the squad, but over the course of the show's run, he shows how a unique perspective can help with solving cases.
The show mixes action with personal drama well, to the point where the show even sparked the spinoff "The Rookie: Feds for a while, until ABC cancelled it after just one season.

Michael Dorn’s run in showbiz has been defined by his portrayal of Worf in Star Trek, and he is among the few set of actors who appeared in all seven seasons of the revered The Next Generation. While it’s easy to see why most fans would recognize Dorn from his glory days in the influential sci-fi IP, the Deep Space Nine star’s career extends far beyond his Star Trek credentials.
Although the actor is mostly notable for his voice work in several animated outings, including DC’s Gargoyles, interestingly, most people often miss out on his character in ABC’s Castle.

Nathan Fillion’s Firefly aired only eleven out of its fourteen episodes when Fox abruptly cancelled the series. The show didn’t have the necessary ratings to justify its budget, but received a cult following after its cancellation. There were calls for its revival, and the actors of the series often got together at Comic Cons to reminisce about their experience.
Firefly was set 500 years into the future, when humans have entered a new star system. The series followed the adventures of a group of misfits aboard the Serenity, a Firefly-class spaceship. This group of nine anti-heroes was led by Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds.
While a revival rumor is still in the air, the stars of the series have moved on. Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, and Alan Tudyk have all gone on to build great careers for themselves and are actively part of successful projects. Here’s...

Murder in a Small Town just added an Oscar winner to the Season 2 cast, which will boost the show's energy!
One of Fox's nicer surprises in 2024 was Murder in a Small Town. Based on the books by L.R. Wright, the series stars Rossif Sutherland as Karl Alberg, a former big-city cop who moves to the small British Columbia town of Gibsons to become its police chief.
Alberg soon starts a relationship with librarian Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) as he solves a variety of murders and other crimes in the town. The show has had a notable guest star cast that includes Stana Katic, Erica Durance, and others. It was a good success that landed a second-season renewal.

One of the most underrated crime shows of the 2000s is Castle, starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. The 2009 series follows popular mystery novelist Richard Castle as he uses a political favor to shadow serious NYPD Detective Kate Beckett for inspiration on his next crime novel. Castle and Beckett have opposite personalities and styles, but over time, he proves to be an asset in investigations with his unique experience and perspective as a mystery writer.
Castle easily distinguishes itself from other crime series airing at the time with dynamic characters and exemplary cases that blend the best creative elements of crime novels and television mystery-style writing. Castle notably varied in quality across its 8 seasons but deserves credit for being a great TV series.

Castlewas among the most popular and creative procedural mystery shows of its time. While there are more than a few ongoing series about detectives, cops, and lawyers that solve crimes, the premise of Castle was a unique one. The series starred Firefly actor Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, a famous author known for his iconic mystery novels that revolve around the fictional hero Derrick Storm. Castle begins solving crimes alongside the New York City homicide detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic); while initially, the duo’s relationship was purely professional, it became clear early on that the two characters were smitten with each other. Even though Fillion and Katic had excellent chemistry when they were on-screen together, the filming process for the show was far more hostile.

Nathan Fillion has assumed a rare space in fandom, a place occupied by very few performers. Like Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Bruce Campbell before him, he's a geek favorite because he can play a certain kind of stock character with cocksure élan. He first made his mark on television as the jukebox repairman Johnny Donnelly in "Two Guys and a Girl," and captured the hearts of fandom as Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, the quippy captain of the Serenity, in Joss Whedon's short-lived sci-fi series "Firefly." Fillion's television profile gradually rose over the 2010s as his portrayal of thriller novelist Frank Castle on ABC's "Castle," opposite Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett, became a top-20 Nielsen ratings hit. He was so indelibly likable in these varied roles that comic book readers began fan-casting him as any hero with a rakish charm.

If you're reading this, congrats on having likely finished watching "Bones," whether it's for the first or fifth time. The Fox show about a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel), an FBI special agent (David Boreanaz), and the love and rotting skeletons between them is a daunting watchlist prospect, topping out at a whopping 246 episodes, but it's worth it if you love a good procedural. "Bones" debuted during an arguable high point in crime drama history, premiering in 2005 and wrapping up its lengthy run in 2017. The show isn't often recognized as particularly groundbreaking, but it certainly (re)started a trend toward forensics-based crime sagas led by partners who make moon eyes at each other every episode.
So what do you do when you finish watching a show this long? If you love TV as much as we do, the answer is naturally to find another show that'll make you feel the same thrill as "Bones" did.

[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Murder in a Small Town‘s Season 1 finale, “Sleep While I Sing.”] The season finale of Murder in a Small Town ramped up the kill count by dozens as a serial killer took over town with his very twisted Mo: posing and then painting the victims as morbid renaissance-style portraits. The person responsible for potentially dozens of untimely demises? Why, it’s Tommy Cummins, the unassuming art teacher played by Schitt’s Creek star Noah Reid. Executive producer Jeff Wachtel told TV Insider that after they were able to nab James Cromwell for the pilot (taking over a role once intended for Donald Sutherland), the creatives shot for the stars with their guest star wish list, recruiting the likes of Stana Katic, Devon Sawa, and more. What made Reid so right for this nefarious role — the first and only mass murderer of the season — was his well-earned wholesome beau reputation. “Ian [Weir,...

Murder in a Small Town won’t be airing for a couple of weeks! When does the Fox mystery show return?
Murder in a Small Town is a unique show as it’s a Canadian production airing on Fox. Based on the novels by L.R. Wright, the show is set in the British Columbia town of Gibsons as Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a big-city cop, relocates to become the sheriff. He soon forms a bond with local librarian Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) that becomes a romance.
The show is connecting with some intriguing turns, like how each episode has a big guest star as part of the case. They range from Stana Katic as a woman with a secret to Kreuk’s former Smallville co-star, Erica Durance, as an old friend of Cassandra’s tied to a case.

The Rookie has undoubtedly been a success for Nathan Fillion, but if it is able to reach season 9, the actor will reach an impressive milestone that his other shows didn't. ABC's police procedural series centers around Fillion's John Nolan, a middle-aged man who spontaneously quits his job and joins the LAPD. When The Rookie first premiered, Nolan was a rookie police officer at the Mid-Wilshire Division in Los Angeles. He was fresh out of the police academy and the oldest rookie in the LAPD, and almost seven seasons later, much has changed, but the show is still going strong.
Although The Rookie's ratings have fluctuated over the years, it remains a show that ABC can rely on. It comes as no surprise that the series has lasted as long as it did. Even with a couple of bad seasons of The Rookie, the police procedural TV show has retained...

Fox’s Murder in a Small Town has just gotten underway, but it’s taking an aspect few could expect in some big guest stars! See which Smallville co-star is coming on the next episode!
Based on the novels by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town focuses on Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a former big-city cop who relocates to the small town of Gibsons, British Columbia. He figures it’ll be a nice and quiet job as the local police chief only to start uncovering crimes in the town, including murder.
Alberg does get help from his fellow cops and a relationship with local librarian Cassandra Mitchell (Kristen Kreuk), who he starts dating. While it appeared the show was just a standard mystery, it’s getting attention thanks to some surprisingly high-profile guest stars.
The 90-minute premiere had Oscar nominee James Cromwell as an elderly resident who’s suspected of a dark murder.

I suppose when I saw Stana Katic in the cast list for Murder in a Small Town, I was hoping she’d have a big role, a recurring character who, for lack of anything else, could be a romantic interest for Karl. While this episode definitely plays that out a little bit, maybe not romantic as such, more of a sexual tension, it’s a shame that we get so little from The Kate Beckett. Anyway, Murder in a Small Town seems to be confused about what it wants to be because one day it presents its main plot as the romance between Karl and Cassandra, and the next it completely neglects it for other things. I’m finding it quite hard to stay interested. Additionally, we’ve had two cases with the same background, sibling relationships, where one of the guys owes a big amount of money. Is there...

It’s the episode we’ve all been waiting for — Stana Katic guest-starred as a cunning psychopath on Murder in a Small Town.
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 Episode 3 focused more on the case than Karl and Cassandra’s romance, partly because of having such a big-name actor.
Only pieces of their romantic relationship were shown this time, but the series dropped hints into Karl and Sid’s lives instead.
( Kailey Schwerman/ Fox) Which Sibling is More Psychotic?
I’m unsure who would win if the Strachan siblings had a contest to determine who was more psychotic. Zoe (Stana Katic) would probably win, but Benjamin (Ben Cotton) came close.
Murder in a Small Town has overdone these dueling sibling scenes in which one of them owes thugs money these past few episodes. It’s only interesting for so long.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Murder in a Small Town season 1, episode 3.Stana Katic, known for playing the female lead in ABCs Castle, returned to murder procedurals in Murder in a Small Town, but it totally flipped her Kate Beckett character. Katic played Kate Beckett opposite Nathan Fillions Richard Castle on the popular procedural series for eight years, forging a household name for herself as an NYPD detective. Despite being one of the best dramedy series of its time, Castle ended after eight seasons, with Nathan Fillion going on to play John Nolan in ABC's The Rookie and Katic joining another crime series.
Katic's stint as Kate Beckett halted when ABC unceremoniously ended the crime drama in 2016. The network canceled the show because of declining ratings. However, ABC had already fired Katic from the show, and the series announced that it would continue without her, killing Katic's Kate character and making Richard Castle,...

“Murder in a Small Town” is part romance, part crime procedural and all kinds of small-town cozy in between. Starring Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville”) and Rossif Sutherland (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), the new Fox drama transports viewers to the quiet coastal Canadian town of Gibsons and feels like the TV-ification of the “cozy mystery” trend that’s been so popular in online book communities in recent years.
Indeed, the series is inspired by the Karl Alberg book series by L.R. Wright, following the former big-city officer (Sutherland) to his new small-town home where he takes on the role of police chief in the idyllic town. But the would-be paradise has secrets, mysteries and murders of its own that challenge his skills as an investigator, and all the while, he’s sparking up a new romance with the local librarian, Cassandra Lee (Kreuk).

Instead of solving crime, it looks like Castle’s Stana Katic might be committing crime in Tuesday’s Murder in a Small Town.
Katic guest-stars in Episode 3 of the Fox crime procedural as Zoe Strachan, a Gibson resident who becomes involved in Alberg’s latest investigation.

HBO’s The Franchise may forever alter the way you experience a big-budget, IP-driven movie, by revealing just how silly it can be to film such an overblown spectacle.
Premiering this Sunday, Oct.6 at 10/9c and counting two-time James Bond movie director Sam Mendes among its executive producers, The Franchise follows the crew of an unloved franchise movie — Tecto: Eye of the Storm — as they fight for their place “in a savage and unruly cinematic universe.”
