This Day That Year: When Vivek Oberoi Played Pm Narendra Modi
Image
In a new edition of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha revisits the one where Vivek Oberoi played Pm Narendra Modi, which released in 2019.

In Omung Kumar’s Pm Narendra Modi, which clocks six years on May 24, Vivek Oberoi handles the principal role with a certain amount of flair and decency. His eyes speak more than a thousand words. Lamentably this is a film that believes in the power of verbal lamp-posts. Every self-glorifying thought that this celluloid holographic Modi feels must have a verbal counterpoint. Every rhetoric and retort, every aphorism that our prime minister has uttered or not uttered (the line between fact and fiction in this bio-pic is non-existent) is given the status of a large hoarding.

In one sequence, he communicates metaphysical ideas with his spiritual guru (played by Suresh Oberoi), which ends with the Guru declaring his shishya ready for politics.

For a brief interlude,...

Darshan Kumar Revisits Mirza Juuliet As It Clocks 8 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Mirza Juuliet with star Darshan Kumar as it hits eight years since it released in theatres.

More than midway into the turbulent take on the destiny of star-crossed lovers on the run, the Uttar Pradesh ki Juliet, aka Julie, who has been raped by her sexed-up finance, is told by her father-like elder brother to calm down.

“I shouldn’t be saying this. But my sister, you are so pretty. Any man would get carried away,” giggles Bade Bhaiyya Priyanshu Chatterjee anxiously, unwilling to break an alliance that means huge political gains for him and his family.

This is normal procedure in a section of the Cow Belt. Make the daughter a sacrificial cow for your personal gains. And when she shows more spirit than that bottle on the table, kill her. Family honour, you know.

This is one of the more disturbing moments in the...

This Day That Year: Revisiting Navdeep Singh-Madhu Mantena-Anushka Sharma’s NH10
Image
Focussing on another excellent movie in his This Day That Year series, Subhash K Jha revisits Anushka Sharma’s NH10.

When was the last time you were scared, really scared, while watching a film? Forget the creaky gates, flapping windows, and banshee wails of the so-called horror movies, which are manufactured with assembly-line monotony. The real horror resides on the roads and highways, where marauders and prowlers lurk with all the evil force of modern-day servants of Satan in search of prey.

As a road thriller about a couple waylaid by criminals on a bleak stretch of highway outside Gurgaon, NH10 holds a great amount of riveting resonance. As a thriller that tears into the monstrous gender inequalities that engender gruesome crimes such a ‘honour killing’, NH10 puts forward an even stronger case.

This is the beauty of this dark and passionate film. It works on a multiple level without...

“Dhokha, Is Redeemed By Madhavan’s Presence” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Dhokha: Round D Corner

Starring R. Madhavan, Aparshakti Khurrana, Darshan Kumar and Khushalii Kumar

Directed by Kookie Gulati

There is much to be said about a hostage thriller that seems to move at a breakneck speed. Dhokha, with a colonized sub-title that says ‘Round D Corner’(the ‘D’ being a wave-out to the young audience) is the kind of recreational afternoon pre-siesta movie where you can’t afford to blink.

Something is happening every minute. Some character or the other is doing a personality volte-face. If you don’t stay alert you may end backing the wrong horse.

Allegiances, loyalty and relationships are shuffled constantly. Madhavan is the only one who remains rocksteady. He plays a much-harassed husband Yathaarth Singh whose wife seems to be a bit of a nutcase. She is held hostage in her apartment by a Kashmiri terrorist named Gul(how original!).

As Gul, Aparshakti Khurana’s...

R. Madhavan, Khushalii Kumar Talk Thriller ‘Dhokha,’ India’s National Cinema Day (Exclusive)
Image
After his directorial debut “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,” which bowed at the Cannes market earlier this year that he also wrote and co-produced, R. Madhavan is back solely as an actor with thriller “Dhokha – Round D Corner,” directed by Kookie Gulati (“The Big Bull”).

After stints in music videos, Khushalii Kumar makes her film debut, playing a woman with a personality disorder who is taken hostage by a terrorist. She is married to Madhavan’s character.

“It’s very tightly knit and any sort of revelation might give you a hint and ruin it for people,” Madhavan told Variety about the plot of the film. “It looks like a pretty straightforward story, but as the film progresses, nobody is actually who they seem.”

For Madhavan, after the rigors of “Rocketry,” being back to acting duties and getting back on set after long months away due to Covid-19 lockdowns, was a relief.
