Synopsis:
In 1989, emergency responders received a 911 call from Maria Rossi confessing to three brutal murders. The courts found her insane – but something else found her first.
Twenty years later, her daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade), followed by film-maker Michael (Ionut Grama) who wishes to document her journey, has found that her search for answers had led her to two rogue priests who reveal that her mother is in truth possessed not by one powerful demon but four! Now, it’s up to Isabella to face pure evil and work to overcome its claim on her mother’s soul once and for all.
Sometimes there’s nothing quite like a good, old fashioned Exorcism flick that features all the staples we’ve come to know and love and fear - Contorted bodies, speaking in tongues and the troubled protagonists that have to overcome all the odds.

Following on from the surprising decision to screen William Brent Bell's new docu-exorcism horror flick 'The Devil Inside' in various churches around the world the UK decided to get in on the action and took the almost sacrilegous decision to preview the movie the night before its general release last Friday at the Round Chapel in Hackney, London. Bell co-penned the script for 'The Devil Inside' along with Matthew Peterman. Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan and Brian Johnson all star in the movie. It's currently running in theatres here across the UK and you can check out a special audience reaction footage clip from the Hackey-based event below. ...

Blending the possession elements of The Exorcist with the video-camera stylings of Paranormal Activity, new horror film The Devil Inside has topped the UK box office on its first weekend of release.
It belongs to the found footage genre in which a film is presented as an amateur recording of actual events, giving it an added sense of grittiness and authenticity. It's a documentary-style technique that may well make filmgoers ask if what they are seeing is real, thus offering an immediate suspension of disbelief.
So what better way to see how viewers responded than by pointing a video camera at the audience, too?
Following the earlier reaction footage, taken at a screening in America where the film was released at the start of January, comes a new video from the first UK screening last week. Like the Us showing, it was held in a church, which no doubt added to the creepy atmosphere.

We’re doing something a little different for this review folks… If you’ve read any of my reviews of documentary-style or found-footage horror flicks you’ll know I have a particular disdain for the sub-genre. Couple that fact with the terrible reviews that came out the Us when the film opened over there and I knew I’d give The Devil Inside a bad review. So I thought in the interests of balance and fairness, why not see what joe public thinks of the film? After all, despite what critics say about these types of movies they still attract an audience. Hence we tracked down a found footage film fan who has a fondness for the Paranormal Activity movies (again another franchise I...

Despite what the advertising claims, The Devil Inside looks more at the various causes of malevolent behavior than the attempts to treat the symptoms. When science says possession is a product of the mind, maybe all there is to cause a person to be possessed is a switch than a demonic spirit.
Although most of the cinematography is buried by the use of the shaky-cam format, there are small parts of this movie to like. With the film offering very close-up shots of the eye as part of the visual tale, the video editor is imbuing this film with symbolism. If the eye is truly the window to the soul, as some holy texts lead readers to believe, this film certainly has plenty of those framed shots. By examining how the eye reacts,...

For decades, The Lost Boys earned the top spot on my "movies that cheated the audiences at the end" list. By rewriting vampire lore in the last 8 minutes, the entire movie was ruined for me, no small feat given my proclivity to suspend disbelief (and yes, I revisited that film and the review is coming soon).
But the reigning champion was dethroned this weekend, as The Devil Inside delivered a brutal kick to the gut to moviegoers. It's unfortunate, as the film is pretty good, keeping the audience either deathly silent or screaming at all the right moments. But as the credits rolled, most of the audience at the screening I attended went from shrieking to jeering and booing at the screen.

Despite audience disgust and critical flaming, William Brent Bell, director of last weekend’s big deal The Devil Inside and one-time adult film production coordinator, has landed a deal to helm The Vatican for Warner Brothers. Deadline Hollywood is reporting the deal was in the works before the holidays, but was fast tracked once the Warner money men saw The Devil Inside’s $34mil opening take. The Vatican is reportedly a conspiracy theory tale, scripted by David (Suspect Zero) Cohen.

Director William Brent Bell and screenwriter Matthew Peterman discuss The Devil Inside, the controversial ending, and the viral website for this indie horror tale
After the overwhelming success of the micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity franchise, Paramount Pictures set up an indie division called Paramount Insurge, which focuses on making low-budget films with budgets under $1 million. Their first title under this endeavor is The Devil Inside, which shattered box office expectations this weekend, opening with a massive $34.5 million from just a $1 million budget. I recently had the chance to speak with The Devil Inside director William Brent Bell and screenwriter Matthew Peterman over the phone to speak about their successful horror indie, its controversial ending, and much more. Here's what they had to say below.

It's the latest micro-budget film to storm the Us box office - but is The Devil Insider worth the bother? Here's Ron's review...
When Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade) was a small child, there was... an incident. Her mother Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley) killed three members of the clergy while the two priests and a nun were performing an exorcism on her without the Vatican's permission. Isabella grows up, and her mother gets shipped off to a mental hospital in Rome, right in the shadow of the Vatican.
Fortunately for Isabella, being so close to the Vatican gives her a unique opportunity to meet a pair of priests, Ben (Simon Quarterman) and David (Evan Helmuth), who practiced unlicensed exorcisms using a unique mix of medical science and religious rituals to determine who is simply mentally ill and who has an actual Satan infestation. Of course, this unique combination of situations makes...

Simon Quarterman, The Devil Inside North Americans want original, high-quality stories, pundits are always reminding us. Make good, original movies and you'll have lots of butts warming movie seats. Well, the warm butts are back in huge numbers thanks to … The Devil Inside, a derivative, cheaply made horror flick with a 7% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' critics and an "F" CinemaScore rating from moviegoers. As per figures found at Box Office Mojo, on its first weekend in early January, The Devil Inside grossed an estimated $34.5 million. That's nearly half of the prestigious The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's take after three weekends — including two weeks during the height of the holiday season. Paramount clearly has found another Paranormal Activity cashcow to milk from. Give them original, quality movies and they'll come. In large part as a result of The Devil Inside's box-office allure and of the continuing success...

New 'The Devil Inside' movie delivered lots of weird thrills, drama & crazy ending. Paramount Pictures released their crazy, new thriller/horror flick "The Devil Inside" into theaters this weekend. I just got through checking it out,and at the very least,I found it to be quite interesting as well as entertaining. It served up some wild, exorcism scenes that ended quite brutally, and more. The movie stars: Fernanda Andrade, Isabella Rossi, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan, Brian Johnson, Preston James Hillier, and D.T. Carney. In the flick,a lady named Maria Rossi called 911 back in 1989,claiming,she killed three people. She was eventually sent to a Catholic psychiatric hospital in Rome,Italy, where she continued to just get worse. Next,it cut 20 years to 2009,where her daughter named Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) goes on a journey to look for answers as to what happened to her crazy mother.

2011 saw a box office slump like nothing before it. But as 2012 kicks off, Hollywood is hopeful that fans will come back to the theater with such big titles as The Dark Knight Rises, Marvel's the Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and The Amazing Spider-Man all waiting in the wings.
The first real big release weekend of the year has kicked off things in fashion, with the low budge horror film The Devil Inside earning an unprecedented, and unexpected, $16.8 million on Friday, its day of release ($2 million of which came from midnight screenings).
Paranormal Activity 3 was the last horror film to open this big, which was way back in October. Paramount released both films, and it looks like they have another potential franchise on their hands.

Paramount Insurge's The Devil Inside beat all expectations at the box office on Friday, earning $16.9 million from 2,285 theaters. Paramount bought the horror film for $1 million, which the studio made back with $2.2 million in midnight screenings alone. Directed by William Brent Bell and starring Fernanda Andrade, Isabella Rossi, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan, Brian Johnson, Preston James Hillier and D.T. Carney, the movie may earn around $30 million its first weekend. Paramount took second as well with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol adding $6.2 million. The Brad Bird-directed action thriller has reached $155.9 million domestically and has earned over $416 million worldwide. Third place belonged to Warner Bros.' Sherlock...

Title: The Devil Inside Director: William Brent Bell (‘Stay Alive‘) Starring: Fernanda Andrade (‘Sons of Anarchy’), Simon Quarterman (‘The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior’) and Evan Helmuth (‘Fever Pitch’) Dramatizing a supposedly real exorcism in the ever-popular found footage sub-genre is a frighteningly effective plot element for horror directors. Despite the early success of the sub-genre with such acclaimed hits as ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘Paranormal Activity,’ the real-life use of terrifying shots has lost its efficiency in scaring viewers. ‘The Devil Inside,’ the latest entry in the found footage category that claims to be inspired by actual events, is the perfect example of why the pieced-together...

Suzan Crowley, The Devil Inside All Hollywood needs is a good movie and North Americans will return to movie theaters. Well, The Devil Inside is apparently that "good" movie: with an 8% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' critics, the horror thriller/exorcism "documentary" earned $2 million at Thursday midnight screenings at 1,400 sites. That's considerably more than Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' $1.25 million in mid-December. As per Deadline.com and The Hollywood Reporter, The Devil Inside is expected to collect $12-15 million on Friday (including the Thursday midnight screenings) and $25-30 million for the weekend. If those estimates are correct, the cheapo horror thriller at 2,285 locations will definitely top the North American box office. According to the Reporter, Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible IV – Ghost Protocol should rake in around $19 million at no. 2. Distributed by Paramount's Insurge label, The Devil Inside was reportedly acquired for $1m. If it goes half as...

If only this was a sit-com, what an uproarious work The Devil Inside would be. From this critical angle, (perhaps after proper lubrication, Alamo Drafthouse why aren’t you near me?) you could settle in for solid camp. Sober, the comparisons to Rick Santorum’s stance on abortion are uncanny – oops – spoiler alert.
Of course I can spoil this film all I want to. It is, as the Blues Travelers say, the hook that brings you back. The hook here is similar to many a film in this genre; people freaking out, bleeding and a lot of “the power of Christ compels you!” Holy water is spilled and things go boom in the night (thanks to Dolby surround sound).

If I have any complaints about movie-going in general, it's the nearly all of the spectacle is gone. In the days of the great William Castle (who pretty much created viral marketing), there would be all manner of gimmicks associated with his films from seat buzzers to insurance policies to flying skeletons sailing over the crowd. What a fun time to have been a fan! As a tip of the hat to those golden days of cinema, Paramount had a little surprise in store for those who attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Devil Inside.

This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr looks at his list of New Year’s resolutions. However, since he was a little drunk when he wrote them and his handwriting is sloppy, he thinks it reads to “exorcise more” instead of “exercise more.” So, he hops a plane to Rome and sneaks out to the theater late at night to check out the latest first-of-the-year release, The Devil Inside. After waking up from a quick nap in the theater as a result, Kevin heads back to the states to catch some last-minute award films in limited release. Normally one doesn’t associate January with horror, but within the past few years we’ve been seeing more and more of those genre films filling up the first month of the year. The story, written by Brent Bell and Matthew Peterson, centers on Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade), a young girl who files all the way to Rome in order to figure out if her mother Maria (Suzan Crowley) is mentally ill or is possessed by a demon. Paramount's The Devil Inside has horror fans divided. Some loved it, some liked it, and some hate it on a level that's borderline irrational. We fell into the liked it category, and to further help you make your decision about whether or not to go see it this weekend, we have another new clip and a way for you to continue the demonic journey of Maria Rossi!
The ending of the flick seems to be the main culprit when it comes to people's opinions on the flick, but let's face it: In the world of horror movies, does anything really ever end?
As a result Paramount has set up a website called The Rossi Files, which is home to all types of viral goodies like never-before-seen footage, archival notes, and more. Click on the image of the newspaper to get started.

Director: William Brent Bell Writers: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman Starring: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Suzan Crowley As a subcategory of the horror genre, the exorcism film does not have the best reputation. For every The Exorcist, there are a dozen Posessed’s and Beyond the Door’s. Yet, when done well, there is rarely something as profoundly disturbing as the image of someone in the grips of demonic possession. The Devil Inside combines traditional exorcism tropes with a quick, well written story to provide a deliciously horrifying package; blood, Bible and all. Writer/Director William Brent Bell appears to have an acute understanding of exorcism film’s successful attributes and its traditional flaws. Recycled trademarks like unnaturally contorted bodies, speaking in tongues, and sexual threats are all present in The Devil Inside, but they do not feel old or tired. The film also avoids any preachy religious characters,...

The idea that Heath Ledger was possessed by a demon during the production of The Dark Knight is not new. Some folks truly believe that the young actor opened himself up, and became susceptible to, a truly evil force. One that drove Heath's performance as The Joker.
One of those people that believe Heath Ledger may have been under the influence of Satan's minions in his portrayal of this iconic Batman villain is The Reverend Bob Larson, the world's leading exorcist, and foremost expert on cults, the occult, and supernatural phenomena. He is currently making the rounds in discussing the authentic nature of the exorcisms seen in The Devil Inside.
We recently caught up with Bob to chat about this new thriller. Along the way, we began discussing the dangers of demon possession in acting. And how certain roles or performances may make a person more accessible to demons. Heath Ledger...

Fernanda Andrade and Suzan Crowley talk about their experiences on William Brent Bell's horror tale hitting theaters January 6
Last night, I was invited to take part in a screening of Paramount Pictures' upcoming horror tale The Devil Inside, which opens in theaters nationwide January 6. Several members of the cast and crew were on hand for the event, and I was able to speak with the leading ladies of this exorcism tale, Fernanda Andrade and Suzan Crowley.
The story centers on Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade), a woman seeking the truth about her mother Maria (Suzan Crowley), who killed three church members during her own exorcism. When Maria was transferred to a facility in Rome from the United States, Isabella began to question whether or not her mother was possessed by a supernatural force.

The Devil Inside starts off slow, plays well in the middle and ends with a groan. Coming in at 87 minutes, the first hour or so serves as your standard set-up with a couple of solid scares. Unfortunately this leaves only something like 20 minutes of the worst and most unimaginative parts of the whole thing as it devolves from a faux documentary into a bag of cheap and cliched "found footage" tricks. Not to mention, if you've seen the theatrical trailer, the only part of the film you won't be well ahead of are those final 20 minutes, but once you get there you'll just wish you could hit fast forward.
The story begins as a young woman named Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) heads off to Italy to see if she can help her mother, Maria (Suzan Crowly). Twenty years ago Maria killed three people during an exorcism, was promptly found not guilty for reasons of insanity,...

The Devil Inside
Directed by: William Brent Bell
Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Suzan Crowley
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 6, 2012
Plot: The daughter (Andrade) of a woman (Crowley) who was possessed in 1989 goes to Rome to better understand exorcisms. She befriends two exorcists (Quarterman and Helmuth) who go against church guidelines.
Who’S It For? If you want a multiplex experience that will legitimately thrill you, go see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. If you’re looking for something to satisfy a lust for the disturbing and gruesome, go see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. You won’t get anything from your ticket to The Devil Inside, aside from more re-assurance that found footage movies are cheap ways for films to suck.
Overall
Don’t even bother with the actual images within The Devil Inside when deducing how terrible the first new movie of 2012 is.

Even though it seems that every January now seems to be a dumping ground for a new religious themed horror film (last year the forgetful The Rite held that honor), I still had an inkling of curiosity going into The Devil Inside. Whether it was the clever yet simple title or the striking poster art of a woman revealing an embedded upside down cross in her inner lip, The Devil Inside looked like it was attempting to create its own universe (and apparently its own franchise) to set it apart from other religious themed horror films and “found footage” horror entries. Unfortunately, originality was left only for the name and marketing for this predictable and conventional thriller.
The film opens with a chill inducing 911-call followed by a police video that shows the results of an exorcism gone wrong. Three clergy members have been murdered and the troubled woman who...
