How May the 4th Became Known as Star Wars Day and How It’s Being Celebrated
Image
It didn’t begin a long time ago or in a galaxy far far away, but every May 4 it feels like images, memes and promotional deals involving Star Wars have an inescapable gravity.

May 4 — or May the 4th, as fans say — has evolved over the years into Star Wars Day, an informal holiday celebrating the space epic and its surrounding franchise.

What is Star Wars Day?

Star Wars Day was created by fans as a sly nod to one of the films’ most popular catchphrases, “May the force be with you.” Get it? Good, now May the 4th be with you, too.

It’s not an official holiday but has become so well-known that even former President Joe Biden marked it last year when Star Wars actor Mark Hamill dropped by the White House a day beforehand. This year, the Trump administration marked the occasion with a Star Wars-themed meme.

Blu-ray Review: Platoon (1986): (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo): Oliver Stone
Platoon (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review, a 1986 movie directed by Oliver Stone starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Johnny Depp, Kevin Dillon, Dale Dye, and Forest Whitaker.

Release Date: May 24, 2011

Platoon Review

Platoon is an illuminating yet polarizing journey of one United States Marine Corps private during the Vietnam War, a wartime neophyte who eventually is forced-fed many lessons and conduct edicts, both fortuitous and detrimental ones, dependent upon the situation. Private Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen)’s two “fathers” during his tour of duty, Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe) and Staff Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), create a new version of Private Taylor: weathered, aggressive, and less afraid of his own shadow.

Private Taylor is the classic entry character for script writers: a virtual blank slate through which the experiences of the film are written on. He is the character through which the audience is introduced into the world...

Blu-Ray Review: 25th Anniversary of Oliver Stone’s Devastating ‘Platoon’
Chicago – Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” is easily one of the most important films in my life. It came out in theaters when I was eleven and I saw it not long after that on VHS. My parents decided that, despite the intensity of the film, its subject matter was important enough that I could handle it even at a young age. I remember being simply blown away by the movie for numerous reasons.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

The film is a technical masterpiece with a personal touch. Not only did it open a chapter of history for me in new ways but it showed me how film could be used to deal with personal demons, as Stone so clearly does with this work. Winning several Oscars, including Best Picture, the movie stands as one of the best war films ever made and it makes its HD debut this week in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Charlie Sheen Is Winning in 'Platoon' on Blu-ray
Long before the "Two and a Half Men" fallout and Charlie Sheen's reactionary touring carnival, Sheen was already "winning" as Chris Taylor -- a young American who drops out of college for combat duty in Vietnam -- in Oliver Stone's acclaimed "Platoon," which arrives on Blu-ray for the first time on May 24.

The movie won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and is disturbingly realistic because it is based on Stone's real-life experiences during the Vietnam War.

Chris thinks it unfair that only the poor and uneducated are fighting in Vietnam and decides to enlist, but his fellow soldiers consider him crazy. Chris starts to believe they're right as the bodies begin to pile up and his group endures ambush after ambush by the Viet Cong near the border of Cambodia in 1967. He bonds with the pot-smoking "Heads" -- especially veteran King (Keith David) --...

A nightmarish vision of Hell comes alive in "Something Wicked Dwells"
Bill Oberst Jr. When it comes to horror films involving characters being provocatively chained up, usually you think it's the women being chained up. The most mainstream effort in that type of film would be something along the lines of Hostel: Part II. Welll, in director Waide Arron Riddle's latest effort, Something Wicked Dwells, they flip that upside down by creating equal opportunity employment for the men to get down and to get chained up instead. Making it so the women can take a break for the moment! Victims in this lineup include character actor Bill Oberst Jr. (Dismal), the male version of Debbie Rochon, who will have to think up of a way to escape or get dragged to the depths of Hell instead.

A nightmarish vision of horror from writer/director Waide Aaron Riddle, Something Wicked Dwells has been described by the director as "a Renaissance painting in hell.

The ever busy actor Bill Oberst Jr. has just wrapped an upcoming horror thriller called Something Wicked Dwells.

Until a trailer is released, we have some exclusive stills from the movie for you to enjoy.

This film looks like it will be rather creepy and bloody. An interesting note is that it was shot in Black and White. Very creative idea and the movie stills look brutal! Can't wait to see this one.

From The Official Release:

Actor Bill Oberst Jr. has wrapped a lead role for the upcoming Something Wicked Dwells, a nightmarish vision of horror from writer/director Waide Aaron Riddle, who calls it "a Renaissance painting in hell."

The film, lovingly shot in black & white in an homage to the look of classic horror films, is set in an ancient dungeon where four prisoners crouch shivering and shackled, waiting to be dragged...

The Downward Spiral of Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen is making headlines and not in a good way these days. Everywhere you look, Charlie Sheen and his bizarre escapades are front page diversion. He is a star that is undoubtedly in some sort of obvious downward spiral if not in real jeopardy. He’s on the brink of irrevocably ruining his career, his image and his credibility with lightning speed. In a trend that seems to be an epidemic in Hollywood where almost every week if not every day we can expect to hear of another errant star in trouble of some sort, Charlie Sheen may be the most out of control and audacious movie star to ever fall from grace.

There is no denying that Charlie Sheen has been and still is a brilliant actor. His rise to fame was gained in hit movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Platoon, Wall Street, Major League, Money Talks and Hot Shots!

Music: Music Review: Twin Shadow: Forget
In spite of being lumped in with bedroom-bound ’80s obsessives like Toro y Moi and Washed Out, Dominican-born George Lewis Jr., a.k.a. Twin Shadow, distinguishes himself on his debut album, Forget, with pungent synthesizer and crooning vocals that ride atop his songs instead of settling, shoegaze-like, below the instrumentation. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear handled production in addition to signing Twin Shadow to his Terrible Records label, so he’s due some credit for the record’s gloomy, idiosyncratic soundbank and new-wave charms. Whether with the rumble-strip drone and steam-pipe hiss of the standout track “Castles In The ...

Dungeon Siege III preview
Be impressed. Be very impressed...

What happens when you mix one of the world’s leading developers of Western RPGs with the world’s leading publisher of Japanese RPGs and then let them loose on one of the most iconic action RPGs ever created? The answer to this equation is astounding; the answer is Dungeon Siege III.

Now it isn’t every day that you receive a very special treat like this, but when a producer from Obsidian Entertainment offers to perform their Gamescom presentation before the event has even kicked off, only a fool would turn the opportunity down. The inimitable Nathan Davis was in fine form as he showed off a game that represents a first in many respects. Not only is it the first time that Obsidian have worked with Square Enix, but it’s also the first Western RPG to be released under the Japanese giant’s banner.

Google Instant Redefines Your ABCs
A is for AOL. B is for Bank of America. C is for Craigslist. Say what? Presenting the default search results of New Google -- in rhyming couplets.

Google Instant is a new default version of the world's top search engine, a shocking change for those of us who depended on the original. Now, without having to hit the "Search" button, users' queries are answered in "streaming" fashion, meaning with every letter typed--even just the first one--results are shown.

This means that no matter what you type, you're going to get search results for one of 26 letter-based keywords first. Start typing with A, for example, and most users will see (even for a split second) results for AOL. (Other users will see "Amazon" first -- the results depend a lot on your search history and your location.)

In essence, Google has just annointed the new kings of the alphabet -- and 24 of the 26 are brands.

'Fallout Online' Will Take Your Beta Tester Application Now
Despite a prolonged legal ordeal between Interplay and Bethesda, a website for "Fallout Online" has launched, and the undated Mmo wants aspiring players to apply for its beta test. Handing your contact info over right now will put you on a mailing list, via which info will be distributed down the road to get into the test. The fact that this is happening at all signals a watershed moment for the game, as ownership of the rights to develop such an Mmo have been in dispute.

"We cannot discuss the lawsuit," designer Chris Taylor stated on the Interplay.com forums. "Thank you for your understanding."

That's about all we're likely to learn for the time being on the subject. But I hope everyone is happy and plugging along in a secret studio room somewhere so that "Fallout Online" can become everything it should be.

Music: Review:The Morning Benders: Big Echo
The title doesn’t lie: The Morning Benders’ second album is both sonically hefty and generous with the reverb. But even while Big Echo’s dreamy, cinema-ready chamber pop provides a fine reason to blow out your speakers, it still feels hemmed in by the boundaries of modern indie rock. With whale-song guitars seemingly lifted from Beach House B-sides, toddling rhythms that could have come from Big Echo producer Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and world-music flourishes polished and pruned with Beirut’s ear for stateliness, each song sounds familiar, and when taken as a whole, the album tends to ...

Veteran's Day Honored, Hollywood-Style
Today is Veteran's Day. It is a time when we step back for a moment to honor the bravery and sacrifices of our nation's soldiers. Men and women who give everything, up to and including their lives, all in the name of protecting this country and all that it represents. Also known as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, the holiday always falls on November 11, commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that brought an end to World War I.

The history of film is rife with stories pulled straight from the front lines. War stories make great cinema, both because they serve up gripping tales of heroism and because they honor those who take on such acts in the real world. So today, in honor of the veterans from wars past and wars ongoing, we give you this small selection of classics to spend some time with.

Grizzly Bear singer Chris Taylor explains why he is on 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' soundtrack
Grizzly Bear contributed the melancholy and methodical "Slow Life [with Victoria Legrand]" to the official soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, an album that has quickly risen to the top spot on Billboard's Top 200 list and solidified the Twilight series as the first soundtrack and sequel soundtrack to consecutively do so, but you might be surprised at singer Chris Taylor's summation of how and why he became a part of the album's incredible contributor list. Taylor had an interview with Pitchfork where he described what brought him and Grizzly Bear to produce the New Moon song. Initially, it was like, "What?!" But Thom Yorke did it, and we like him. It's like: "If dad does it, it's Ok, right?" Radiohead are like parents of good modern rock 'n' roll in certain ways. They paved that path. They've always maintaine ...

Nelly Furtado Forming Indie Label, Signing Her First Act
Nelly Furtado has launched her own independent record label, Nelstar Music, and has signed Toronto-based electro-dance group Fritz Helder & the Phantoms as her first act. "I think that it's best to start off an indie. When you are a new band and you sign to a major, you get thrown to the fire," the pop singer says in a press release.

"I always secretly wanted to be an indie artist. When I was a teenager, I loved Ani Difranco and hoped I could do something like that," Nelly continues. "A major turned out to be my destiny, but I'm enjoying reconnecting with the indie world."

Nelly launches Nelstar Music in co-operation with Canadian independent recording company Last Gang Labels. She forms the label because she wants to help aspiring singers and bands exploring their creativity.

As for now, Nelly has "been thinking about a way to help Fritz Helder for a while.
