Edit
  • Trivia
He succeeded Graham Taylor as the manager of the England men's national football team in 1994 but stayed in charge for just one tournament, Euro '96. He announced he was standing down after the tournament before it began due to imminent legal wrangles relating to his business interests. Doubts over his probity had actually seen him overlooked for the job when Taylor had been appointed in 1990. Nevertheless, during his short stint in the England job, former player Gary Lineker said that Venables had raised the England team "from the depths to one of the best in the world again".
