Theaters are brimming over with an army of well-reviewed and buzzy indie films. But, in an unusual state of affairs, pretty much all of them are in wide release, meaning Terrifier 3, Piece by Piece, Saturday Night and The Apprentice, as well as animated My Hero Academia: You’re Next. Limited openings are few — a trio of quality documentaries, A24’s We Live In Time, a couple of Academy runs and a faith-based Mormon film on Brigham Young’s ascendance. There also are a half-dozen Indian films in limited to moderate release.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up select North American rights to Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid following its recent world premiere in Telluride and will mount an awards campaign.

The distributor plans an October 11 theatrical release in New York for the film about renowned Democratic consultant James Carville – the same day Briarcliff Entertainment releases Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump origins story The Apprentice.

Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid will open in Los Angeles and other markets on October 25. As previously announced, CNN Films will broadcast the film on CNN on October 5. The 2024 US election takes place on November 5.

Greenwich Entertainment has acquired select North American distribution rights to “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid,” directed by Matt Tyrnauer.

The documentary premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, and CNN Films will broadcast “Carville” on Oct. 5 on the network. Greenwich will release “Carville” in select theaters across the country starting in New York on Oct. 11 and in Los Angeles Oct. 25, among other cities.

According to the official synopsis, the new documentary, “about famed Democratic political consultant James Carville, chronicles an 18-month period in which Carville spearheaded efforts to persuade President Joe Biden not to run for re-election in 2024.”

Carville famously coined the phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid,” during Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, and was the subject of another documentary, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus’ 1993 film “The War Room.”

Ahead of its premiere at Telluride, Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, a new documentary on famed Democratic political consultant James Carville, has been acquired by CNN Films, Deadline can confirm.

The company specifically picked up television and SVOD rights for the U.S. and Canada. Directed by Matt Tyrnauer (Where’s My Roy Cohn?), the film will premiere on CNN at 7 p.m. Et on Saturday, Oct. 5, also streaming on Max later this fall and receiving an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release.

Carville marks CNN Films’ third acquisition this year, following Luther: Never Too Much and the anticipated Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which the company jointly sought out with DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, and Max.

Rosalynn Carter was a first lady “who saw her role as going well beyond the essential, warm and welcoming host to being a close and trusted, yes, adviser” to her husband Jimmy Carter, PBS NewsHour senior correspondent Judy Woodruff recalled on Tuesday.

Woodruff was among the speakers at a tribute service for Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at age 96.

Carter’s husband, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, attended the service, as his daughter Amy held his hand for much of the service. Carter himself entered hospice care earlier this year, in part to be near his wife, with whom he was married for 77 years.

Also attending the service was President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, former President Bill Clinton, and all of the living former first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump.

Mark Shields, a commentator who provided insightful political analysis on PBS NewsHour for over 30 years, has died. He was 85.

Shields died Saturday of kidney failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Md., NewsHour spokesman Nick Massella told NPR.
