‘The Toxic Avenger’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
Remember the cult hit from 1984 that made Troma Entertainment notorious for its schlockiness? Finally, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen once again. The franchise has been equally funny, brutal, and strangely charming. The original film mixed slapstick violence with a bit of satire. After many decades, the reboot looks to be authentic to its roots while introducing something new for the younger audience.

However, the path to this remake has not been easy. After premiering to a select audience, the film mysteriously disappeared. The movie even had big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Guillermo Del Toro attached to it at some points. Now that it appears to be finished, let’s explore the actors, storyline, and all the relevant details on this radioactive resurrection.

Makers and cast of The Toxic Avenger

Peter Dinklage leads the cast of The Toxic Avenger. He plays Winston Gooze, who is a...

Warners Undates ‘Mickey 17’, Bumps ‘Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire’ Up On Calendar
Image
Warner Bros has pulled Bong Joon-ho’s anticipated sci-fi pic Mickey 17 from its release calendar, bumping up Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from April 12th to March 29th, 2024, when it will debut in IMAX.

We’re told that the Mickey 17 move was due to shifts in production amidst last year’s strikes, and that a new date will be coming relatively soon. Godzilla‘s move to the weekend previously inhabited by that title sees it set to open with very little competition, a re-release of Alice Rorhwacher’s La Chimera being the only other plan, exhibition-wise, for that frame.

Marking Director Bong’s follow-up to Oscar-winning smash Parasite, Mickey17 adapts the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The book follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s...

Mexico’s Los Cabos Festival Calls Off 2023 Edition
Image
Mexico’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of the country’s very top pre-pandemic movie events, has cancelled its 2023 12th edition, citing “the lack of the economic support which was vital in prior editions to carry out this important film event.”

In a written statement, the festival organisers thanked “those people, companies and institutions who had confirmed their support and participation in the 2023. We are committed to strengthen our collaboration in the future.”

Based out of Cabo San Lucas, and launched in 2012 as an three-way North American industry bridge between U.S., Canada and Mexico, Los Cabos proved one of the fastest-growing festivals in Latin America, playing off the huge hike in Mexican production levels, Mexico’s first big U.S./Mexico box office hits such as “Instructions Not Included,” which grossed $90.6 million between the two markets; and the enthusiastic support of Canada’s Telefilm and influential industry players...

East New York Season 1 Episode 20 Review: A Humbling Blues
Bentley in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016)
No! Not Ingrid!

I knew there had to be a reason Quinlan and Bentley kept running into Lorenzo and his young daughter. The encounters seemed random, but nothing on East New York is ever meaningless.

We found out what was happening during the final moments of East New York Season 1 Episode 20 when Ingrid got hit by a stray bullet during a shooting. The little girl will probably be all right, but now the shooter's on the run -- and it appears he's Thora's nephew. What a lead-in to the season finale!

Brandy's instincts were correct unless there's a last-minute twist, and Tyson's not the shooter.

I wasn't sure that confronting Thora about Tyson was a good idea. Brandy's worked hard to gain Thora's trust after a rocky start, and coming at her hard about her nephew's record could have undone all the progress made over the year.

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Sequel Drops Teaser and Title (Video)
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Prepare for more chaos as the Universal Monsterverse readies audiences for its next installment. The studio dropped a 35-second teaser for the next in their “Godzilla vs. Kong” series, that initially started with the 2021 feature of the same name directed by Adam Wingard (“The Guest”).

We don’t get much in 35-seconds but we do get a shot of King Kong himself on his throne, surrounded by the bones of, no doubt, a legion of enemies. The the teaser concludes with the skulls of both Kong and the equally famous Godzilla before revealing the film’s title is officially “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire.”

According to Warner Bros. official press release on the feature, “‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ will transport audiences into the unexplored depths of a brave new world of spectacular new monsters, heroic adventurers, and awe-inspiring set pieces on a scale unlike anything ever seen before.

‘Patria’ Director Félix Viscarret Turns to More Personal Story of Parenting in ‘Not Such an Easy Life’
Image
Spanish filmmaker Félix Viscarret, known for tackling such heavy subject matter as the Basque conflict (“Patria”), crime in the Cuban capital Havana (“Four Seasons in Havana: Winds of Lent”) and psychological drama (“Staring at Strangers”), has made perhaps his most personal film yet with a touching and engrossing story of fatherhood and the pitfalls of success.

In “Not Such an Easy Life,” 40-year-old Isaías (Miki Esparbé), a once promising young architect, is struggling to balance career and family, wanting to raise his young children while desperate to achieve the fleeting professional success he once enjoyed as he strives against more ambitious rivals.

For Viscarret, Isaías’ challenges very much reflect his own experiences, which resulted in “Not Such an Easy Life.”

“Perhaps it was a cluster of special situations that I began to live with as a parent,” he tells Variety.

“For example, one day I saw all my childless friends leave for a premiere party,...

In a relatively minor shift, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is being pushed back less than a month from Oct. 20, 2023, to Nov. 17, 2023. That means the sequel will have the advantage of playing over the Thanksgiving holiday.

And Adam Wingard’s next installment in the Godzilla-Kong franchise will hit theaters March 15, 2024.

Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong, released in March 2021, earned 468.2 million globally. It was a strong showing for a title released amid the pandemic and which hit HBO Max day-and-date as part of Warners’ plan to send all of its 2021 titles to theaters and streaming simultaneously.

Villeneuve’s Dune also did nicely, considering the Covid-19 crisis (it was likewise released in 2021 and hit theaters and streaming day-and-date). The sci-pic grossed north of 400 million globally and won six Oscars.

Canarias Unleashed: The Islands Film Ambitions to Grow Beyond Big International Shoots (Exclusive)
Image
First they conquered Hollywood film shoots, now they’re aiming to drive up local production, adding a new local edge to one of Europe’s most popular big shoot locales.

A decade ago, Spain’s Canary Islands started to become a top shoot destination for big international films, offering wide-ranging landscapes and unique tax advantages.

An influx of international film and TV shoots served to establish an industrial base, nurturing high-profile crew talent and sparking the creation of competitive production services companies.

Now in second stage growth, the Atlantic Ocean islands are raising the ante, boosting local industry’s production subsidies and their international exposure.

Early fruit of new ambitious measures, the Canary Islands Audiovisual Cluster is introducing at next week’s virtual Berlin European Film Market an 80-minute promo reel dubbed Canarias Unleashed which offers a sneak preview of six upcoming features produced on the Islands by local companies tapping into local talent.

La Punta Del Iceberg Trailer: In Spain, Suicide Is Not Painless
David Cánovas has made a series of short films in Spain and now his feature debut, La punta del iceberg (The Tip of the Iceberg) is about to open in theaters. (Note: the headline includes an obscure reference to the theme song from Robert Altman's Mash.) The trailer reveals it to be a drama, and possibly a thriller, starring Maribel Verdú (Pan's Labyrinth), Álex García, and Bárbara Goenaga (Timecrimes). After a large company is shaken by the suicide of three employees in a short period of time, Verdú is sent to investigate the circumstances. As might be expected, work stress appears to be a contributing factor, but is something else driving people to take their own lives? Something that might make the movie into a...

Black Nights 2015 Review: The Bride, Love In The Ruins
Federico García Lorca's play Blood Wedding has been popular for over 80 years, for its level of drama akin to Greek tragedy, blood feuds between families, and one woman caught between two men she loves. In The Bride, Paula Ortiz more than successfully adapts the story for the screen, finding clever ways of taking Lorca's rich poetic words and setting them in a stark landscape, aided by stellar performances. The Bride (Inma Cuesta) awaits her wedding day to The Groom (Asier Etxeandia), but in the background lurks her former lover Leonardo (Alex García), whom she spurned because of his lack of security. There is a blood feud between The Groom and Leonardo's families, and her future mother-in-law (Luisa Gavasa) is uncertain of The Bride's loyalty. As...
