Game Of Thrones: Jon Snow's Family Tree Explained
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "Game of Thrones" and the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series.

We're told over and over again throughout "Game of Thrones" that Jon Snow's whole deal is "being a bastard." Played by Kit Harington, Jon shows up in the pilot as the apparent bastard son of the honorable Ned Stark (Sean Bean), the patriarch of House Stark in the northern reaches of Westeros, and some random tavern wench. But when you learn more about Ned and his nature, the idea that Jon could possibly be the result of an affair seems sort of ludicrous. Despite that, Jon is constantly met with hostility from Ned's wife Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), who thinks Jon is a reminder of Ned's greatest misstep as a husband, and he's not treated with as much kindness and respect...

Meanwhile, Wrong Organ’s Mouthwashing and The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes The Deep were the other multiple award winners of the show. Mouthwashing took home Best Narrative and the Players’ Choice Award, while Still Wakes The Deep won awards for Technical Achievement and Best Indie Horror.

James Gunn Contemplated Bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman Into Dcu
Image
James Gunn is set to introduce a rebooted DC Universe with Creature Commandos this week, but he contemplated beginning the new cinematic universe using the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves' The Batman operates in its own Elseworld timeline far away from other superheroes, and it has worked wonders to create a grounded, epic crime saga that audiences have fallen in love with. However, it seems DC Studios did in fact think about putting Robert Pattinson's Batman in the Dcu.

While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn talked about the upcoming Dcu and was asked if he originally thought he might have to implement The Batman into the larger cinematic universe. Furthermore, if he has reevaluated his stance on keeping things separate. Gunn teases that he has "contemplated" everything when it comes to the rebooted universe, and Batman is no exception. However, he reassures fans that he is committed to...

Goty Snub and No W at Golden Joystick Awards For Silent Hill 2 Has Fans Convinced That The Awards are Rigged
Image
As the gaming industry’s award season for 2024 has started, it would seem that the Silent Hill 2 remake has drawn the short end of the stick. Despite its success, the remake of the classic horror game failed to win any categories at the Golden Joystick Awards.

And fans aren’t happy because what’s even more shocking is its exclusion from the Game of the Year (Goty) nominations at The Game Awards. Fans have not shied away from making accusations. Many argue that the remake deserved recognition not just for its legacy but also for its technical and artistic achievements.

Silent Hill 2 is Just Getting Snubbed Left and Right

The 2024 Golden Joystick Awards featured Silent Hill 2 in categories such as Best Audio Design and Best Lead Performance, yet it left the event empty-handed. Fans expected the game to at least take the...

'The Batman' Actor Barry Keoghan Doesn't Know When He'll Reprise Joker Role
Image
The Batman actor Barry Keoghan has officially addressed all the whispers about Joker's return in Matt Reeves' superhero universe. James Gunn previously shut down the rumor about Keoghan's Joker getting his own HBO TV spinoff after The Penguin, but the iconic villain is still expected to appear in the epic crime saga at some point. The actor himself has now weighed in on his next potential appearance, and it may make fans queasy about his role in The Batman franchise.

While on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Keoghan was asked about his brief but impressive debut as the Joker in The Batman. As he talked about the importance of the role within the context of previous award-winning performances, he sprinkled some doubt about his next opportunity to play the villain. Although most fans expect him to play a big part in The Batman sequels, it seems Keoghan has yet...

Black Sails Most Powerful Character Is Hiding in Plain Sight
Image
When we look at it through a certain lens, Black Sails is a show that is all about power. First and foremost, of course, the series concerns itself with the power of a great story. Its ending, in particular, is entirely dedicated to how art shapes our perception of history and how, when push comes to shove, all we have is a bunch of disjointed tales that may or may not be true and a flag that says a lot more than a few words. Plot-wise, though, Black Sails is also a story about power in the sense that it focuses on who has the power over the island of Nassau. Is it the pirates? The British? The soon-to-be-independent Americans, through the hands of the Guthrie family? Or is it someone else entirely? On a smaller scale, Nassau begins as the property of Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), then changed hands...

Black Sails Ending, Explained: Why Did It End Like That?
Image
Black Sails, a prequel to Treasure Island, blends history and fiction in a gripping tale of pirates and treasure quests. The series finale sees Flint and Silver unite against all odds, choosing love over war in a dramatic conclusion. Creator Jon Steinberg emphasizes the importance of the unlikely bond between Flint and Silver, driving the story's closure.

Conceived as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island novel, Black Sails ran on the Starz network for four seasons between 2014 and 2017 before concluding on an epic note. Blending historical facts with fictional characters, the story follows Captain James Flint (Toby Stephens) and his pirate crew as they attempt to find lost treasure aboard the sunken Urca de Lima cargo ship. As Flint's search brings him closer to enriching his mates, an all-out war between the Spanish and British Empire takes place to control the Caribbean.

Although four years have...

Every Real Pirate In Black Sails & What Happened To Them
Image
Black Sails is a detailed example of historical fiction, featuring real historical pirates in its main cast. The fates of historical pirates such as Anne Bonny, "Calico Jack" Rackham, and Charles Vane are depicted with similarities to history. Black Sails hints at the further adventures of real historical pirate Mary Read with Bonny and Rackham.

The TV show Black Sails is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island, following the adventures of Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew of pirates. While the show is led by fictional characters such as Flint, the main Black Sails characters include real historical pirates like the infamous Long John Silver (Luke Arnold) and the mysterious Billy Bones (Tom Hopper). The historical pirates who appear in Black Sails operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century, better known as the Golden Age of Piracy.

Most of the Black Sails...

Outcast: A New Beginning Review (PS5)
Image
Playing through Outcast: A New Beginning, immediately after playing the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had me feeling like I was inadvertently taking part in a retro gaming week. The difference is that one of these titles was essentially a straight port of a game from 2004, and the other is a brand new 2024 release that is only available on current-gen platforms.

From reading that opening paragraph, you may be led to believe that I am going to spend the rest of this review bashing Outcast: A New Beginning for its outdated physics, and its sub-par character models, but in fact the opposite is true. Playing through this game feels like a love letter to a bygone era; the mid-tier.

Outcast: A New Beginning releases on March 15 and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Outcast: A New Beginning is a AA title, and it is a good one at that.

Meet Bonelli Entertainment, Italy’s Answer to Marvel
Image
There are no capes and there is no spandex in Dampyr, the fantasy horror film by Italian director Riccardo Chemello. But the English-language feature, which has been a surprise hit on Netflix, is the first entry in what you could call the Bonelli Cinematic Universe.

The vampire-hunter tale, starring Wade Briggs, Stuart Martin, Frida Gustavsson, Sebastian Croft, David Morrissey and Luke Roberts, is the first of a new wave of comic-book adaptations from Bonelli Entertainment, the Italian publisher billed as Italy’s answer to Marvel.

The film, which cracked the top 3 on Netflix’s US service, is the origin story of Harlan Draka, a Serbian dampyr, or half-breed offspring of a vampire dad and human mother, whose blood has the power to kill the undead. Draka was first introduced to Italian comic fans 20 years ago — the collapse of the former Yugoslavia and the 1990s Balkan war is the comic’s...

TIFF Review: Seagrass is a Compelling Relationship Drama
Ally Maki
Everything you need to know about Judith (Ally Maki) and Steve’s (Luke Roberts) marriage arrives during their first “share” at the summer retreat where they’ve brought their daughters (Nyha Huang Breitkreuz’s Stephanie and Remy Marthaller’s Emmy) to play while repairing whatever has broken between them. After Steve passes the buck by saying she wanted them to come, Judith attempts to honestly organize her thoughts around her mother’s recent passing. Before she can finish, however, he forcefully interjects: “Five months ago.

What a simple yet telling interaction––one writer-director Meredith Hama-Brown must be intimately familiar with to so poignantly and effortlessly depict. Is that not recent enough? Is there a guidebook to how long you’re allowed to mourn? Or how long you’re expected to wait for sex without ever truly seeming engaged enough to help guide your spouse through the emotional minefield making her numb?...

The Best TV Episodes Of 2022, Ranked
Image
At this point, saying that 2022 has been a good year for TV would be like saying water is wet. There's more TV than ever before, which means that if you thought it was anything but a great year for the medium, you simply haven't been watching enough of the good stuff. We're not blaming you, as the total saturation of the format also means it's tougher than ever to decide what to watch. Luckily, we've got you covered with a countdown of the year's best episodes, a list that includes comedies, dramas, fantasies, horror shows, and everything in between.

While some of the year's best shows -- like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," or "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" -- aren't represented here, it's simply because their episodes were too uniformly great to choose just one. But the shows that did make the cut each find a way to transport, inspire awe,...

Based on the first two comics in the “Dampyr” series, which runs to 300 issues, this 15 million English-language action thriller marks the first feature from the Bonelli Cinematic Universe, which Lucca chief Emanuele Vietina describes as “Italy’s Marvel.” Watch exclusive international clip, above.

Set during the Balkan wars of the early 1990s, the series follows Harlan, who is haunted by nightmares as he wanders the countryside making money pretending to be a Dampyr – half human, half vampire – ridding villages of what residents believe are evil monsters. When summoned by soldiers who are under attack by real vampires, Harlan finds out the truth: he is a real Dampyr.

The “Dampyr” comics were created by Mauro Boselli and Maurizio Colombo and written by Giovanni Masi, Alberto Ostini, and Mauro Uzzeo.

In the movie Wade Briggs (“Please Like Me”) plays Harlan, the Dampyr; Stuart Martin (“Jamestown) is Emil Kurjak, a former soldier who is Harlan’s sidekick; and Frida Frida Gustavsson (“Arne Dahl”) plays Tesla, a vampire who is Harlan’s partner.

The cast also includes Dvid Morrissey (“Good Omens”) as Gorka, Sebastian Croft (“Game of Thrones”) as Yuri, and Luke Roberts (“300: Rise of an Empire”) as Draka.

“Dampyr,” which was shot in various locations in Romania, is helmed by first-timer Riccardo Chemello, who cut his teeth directing commercials for, among others, Red Bull, Disney, and Armani.

A seasoned crew includes Giorgio Gregorini, who won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for “Suicide Squad,” Vladimir Furdik (”Skyfall”) as fight choreographer, Lubomir Misak (“Game of Thrones”) as stunt coordinator, and Giovanni Casalnuovo (“Wanted”) as costume designer.

The producers are Roberto Proia for Eagle Pictures, Vincenzo Sarno for Sergio Bonelli Editore and Andrea Sgaravatti for Brandon Box.
