Once the go-to man for feckless losers, Rafe Spall reveals how losing five stone transformed him into a romantic lead in I Give It A Year and turned his career around
Rafe Spall takes me by surprise. I'm expecting a little fella, a bit porky, not much of a looker. And here he is, 6ft 3in, svelte, smart. Over the past few years, Spall has been the go-to man for feckless losers – there's his sports reporter Pete in the TV comedy Pete Versus Life, who will do or say anything to get a girl into bed, the fascist clever-clogs in The Rotters' Club, the drippy Ian in One Day.
But next month Spall will be playing the newly wed Josh in the very funny romcom I Give It A Year. Not only is this his first lead; Spall has reinvented himself as a lean, mean, six-packed machine, a successful novelist,...

Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has revealed that it was "great" to film his character's love triangle storyline. The actor plays doctor Matt Carter, who has two women fighting over him in upcoming episodes when his ex-girlfriend Jenny Eclaire, played by former Hollyoaks star Elize Du Toit, arrives in Weatherfield. Jenny will clash with Matt's current girlfriend Tina McIntyre, played by Michelle Keegan, as she tries to win him back. "It's great because Matt dating Michelle has given me the chance to be more than just the resident Gp and viewers have seen a different side to him," Mellor told The People. "Basically Tina and Matt are due to go on a triple dinner date with other couples. "But one pair can't make it (more)...

The Shadow Line actor plays a luckless loser in the adaptation of One Day but admits he's enjoying a 'golden period'
"Someone asked me recently," says Rafe Spall, squinting into the August afternoon sunshine, brow furrowed in earnest, "if I had to 'ugly up' to play the part of Ian in One Day." He pauses, looks at me incredulously, and then guffaws with laughter. "That's just my face! Just me, a wig and a bit of corduroy." It is easy to be believe he had a little help though. As the hapless Ian, the one before The One for Emma Morley in director Lone Scherfig's adaptation of the David Nicholls novel, he is scene-stealingly brilliant. While Jim Sturgess makes a convincing Dexter, and Anne Hathaway – give or take the odd slaughtering of a northern vowel – is a pleasingly palatable Emma, it is Spall, coming up quietly on the outside,...
