Stereophonic won the Tony for best play Sunday, one of the five Tony Awards the most nominated play in Tonys history earned during the 2024 edition of the Broadway ceremony.
The play, written by David Adjmi, follows a band trying to record a hit album in the 1970s and features a rock score written by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler. While the majority of the production features spoken dialogue, thus classifying the show as a play, rather than a musical, the Stereophonic actors also perform songs on stage as part of the show.
Adjmi accepted the award for best play, noting the tough journey to get the play, which spans more than three hours and includes a recording booth on stage, produced. He had previously spoken with The Hollywood Reporter about how the play illustrates his own struggle not to give up on himself as an playwright.

There are days when the success of the most Tony-nominated play of all time and its leading lady comes down to a gossip session with her co-star, a facial steam, and a poorly microwaved serving of Kraft Mac and Cheese. When the curtains go up at New York’s John Golden Theatre, Sarah Pidgeon transforms into Stereophonic‘s singer-songwriter Diana, a fictional powerhouse who is an amalgamation of the greatest female rock stars of all time, most clearly Stevie Nicks. But she and co-star Juliana Canfield have a ritual to complete before that can happen.

“When you wear these boots, you’ve got to strut,” quips Tom Pecinka about the costumes he dons to transform into 1970s rock star Peter in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic.” Though he has never been an actor who “ascribes to this idea that once you put on the shoes, you’ll be fine,” the clothes really did help him step into a “power position” in the play. It also helped address “one of the biggest insecurities” he had when he took the role Off-Broadway, which he describes as having to answer questions such as, “How does this guy move? How does this guy enter a room? How does this guy leave a room? How does he take up space, because he’s a big character?” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In the new Broadway show Stereophonic, the year is 1976 and a band on the verge of superstardom is recording their next album in Sausalito, California. We never learn the band’s name nor do we hear the single from their last album that just shot to Number One a year after its release, but over three hours, we get to know the weaknesses, fears, anxieties and hopes of all five members — and the two rookie engineers trapped in the studio with them for the next 12 months.

Arguably the best new American drama since Annie Baker’s The Flick, David Adjmi’s Stereophonic shares both a hyper-naturalistic style and a sprawling three-hour running time with that 2013 masterwork. But the similarities end there. Chronicling a turbulent year in California recording studios during which a fictional 1970s rock band labors over the follow-up to their breakthrough album, this is an immersive plunge into the fraught process of artistic collaboration as pressures mount and interpersonal harmony dissolves into acrimony.
Funny, raw and poignant in equal measure, this expertly sculpted play has the feel of both a behind-the-music docudrama and a lost Robert Altman film, with its astute microcosmic focus, its frequent wash of overlapping dialogue and its sly nudges toward satire. In fact, while the music — fabulous original songs written by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire — is pop-rock rather than country, Stereophonic could almost be an expanded vignette lifted right out of Nashville.

All tickets for the added performance will be priced at $40.

Before he went on to make HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, Mike White would partner with Jack Black for the charmingly funny music-themed comedy School of Rock. The movie drew on Black’s affinity for the music genre as he would previously play as one-half of the rock duo Tenacious D with Kyle Glass. While he’s currently obsessed with Minecraft after his time filming the movie adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Black’s eager to return to the School of Rock for another movie.
According to THR, Black would recently speak with the publication Joe, when he said, “I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo.” Black would also love to see White return to write the movie, “You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. Jack Black is totally down for a School of Rock sequel.
More than two decades after the beloved musical comedy, directed by Richard Linklater, premiered in 2003, the actor-comedian recently told Joe that he’s “ready” to reprise his role as energetic musician Dewey Finn.
“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo,” he said, referencing the movie title of the 1984 sequel to Breakin’.
School of Rock follows Dewey, who became a substitute teacher at an uptight elementary private school after being kicked out of his rock band. But along the way, he tries to turn his class into their own rock band. The film also starred Mike White, Joan Cusack, Adam Pascal, Lucas Papaelias, Chris Stack, Sarah Silverman and Miranda Cosgrove.
Black also admitted that he would like to see the original film’s writer, White, return to pen the script for the hypothetical sequel. However, he acknowledged that White,...

Interview with the Vampire Episode 7
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire’s season 1 finale is a vast departure from the novel but makes for exciting horror TV. The episode hits all the beats of the page, but exchanges the locales for more cinematic settings, and keeps its options open.
“The Thing Lay Still” is laid out like a murder mystery, except the investigator is the most surprised person in the drawing room reveal. The vampire-interviewing journalist, Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), sets the tone by asking about death and difficult choices. His subject, the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), runs through the known ways to kill creatures like himself, such as decapitation, starvation and drinking from the already-dead.

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons (Bonnie and Clyde) has signed on to star alongside Samantha Soule and Wendy vanden Heuvel in I Look To You, an upcoming indie feature written and directed by Daniel Talbott (Midday Black Midnight Blue).
The drama centers on New York transplant Chloe (Soule), who after the sudden death of her wife, ends up in an inpatient treatment program for extreme grief and depression. Structured on the five stages of grief, the film chronicles the tenuous journey of a deeply broken mother-and-daughter relationship and faces down the question, “Can you ever really go home?” Parsons will play Elizabeth, the grandmother of Soule’s Chloe.
Lovell Holder and Addie Johnson Talbott are producing alongside Daniel Talbott.

Are we looking at TV ratings all wrong? Nielsen is having a hard time keeping up with the changing landscape. With each development comes new questions about how best to monetize and measure the effect a show has on the viewer -- questions that keep Matt O'Grady, the Evp of Media Audience Measurement for Nielsen, "up all night." Freddie Smith promises “opportunities for clothes to come off” on Days Of Our Lives. Glee's Chris Colfer says, "As Kurt, I get to wear all these amazing things, by people whose names I can’t even pronounce." Chuck Pratt says "The Lying Game" book was also lacking lots of hunky male characters necessary for a good teen soap. Martha Byrne gets Pretty. Kathy Brier and Chris Stack are returning to One Life To Live.
