‘Piece by Piece’ Turns Pharrell Williams’ Life Into a Toy Story. Literally.
Image
Breaking into the music business, crafting insanely addictive earworm hits, recognizing genre boundaries, starting a streetwear fashion line, wearing properly sized ranger hats — Pharrell Williams has never done anything by the book. The kid from Virginia Beach, Virginia, had always felt like someone who saw (and heard) the world differently than his peers. As a youngster growing up in the 1970s and ’80s, that “he’s so… unusual” tag marked him as a bit of a misfit. By the time Pharrell started creating oft-kilter beats as half of the molten-hot...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F below!

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F's soundtrack features nostalgic 80s and 90s hits, with many songs returning from prior sequels. The film's big chases and scenes are accompanied by catchy tracks like "Shakedown." "Here We Go" by Lil Nas X serves as the theme song for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, sampling Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F."

The franchise is known for dropping multiple bangers into its soundtracks, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F's soundtrack is no different. Music is so important to the Beverly Hills Cop movie franchise that the fourth entry's subtitle, Axel F, takes its name from the original movie's theme song. Of course, soundtracks were a much bigger deal back during the 1980s and 1990s. The first three movies were loaded with hits from artists like George Michael, Glenn Frey and The Pointer Sisters.

Loki Star Jonathan Majors To Receive "Perseverance Award" At Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards
Image
Last December, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Loki star Jonathan Majors was found guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree by a New York jury.

That came after a March 2023 altercation with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. In April, Majors was sentenced to a 52-week, in-person domestic violence intervention program; however, he's continued to maintain his innocence.

Majors and Jabbari met while working on the Marvel Studios movie (she was a movement coach). Between the aforementioned guilty verdict and other allegations of physical and emotional abuse, the actor's Hollywood career stalled as did his aspirations to become one of the world's biggest movie stars.

Between his Marvel work and other critically acclaimed performances, that's the track Majors was on and it's unclear whether he'll ever be able to regain that lost momentum...and whether he should be allowed to do so.

Jonathan Majors to Receive Hollywood Unlocked’s Perseverance Award After Being Found Guilty of Assault
Image
Well, in case we needed more proof cancel culture is fake, convicted assaulter Jonathan Majors was announced to be receiving the Perseverance Award from news outlet Hollywood Unlocked.

The fourth annual ceremony will be hosted by actress Tiffany Haddish, who was at the center of a child abuse lawsuit over a pedophile comedy sketch.

Both Haddish and Majors have alleged that their respective lawsuits have made them lose out on work. In the case of Hollywood Unlocked, though, they’re gaining awards.

Majors was found guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment in December 2023 after abusing ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Majors was sentenced to a 52-week, in-person domestic violence intervention program.

Majors was arrested on March 25, 2023 on charges of assault, strangulation, and harassment. The trial was delayed until November. Jabbari, 33, was hospitalized then with “minor injuries to her head and neck.”

Later accusations surfaced of toxic on-set behavior during “Magazine Dreams,...

Jonathan Majors to Receive Perseverance Award at Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards
Image
The fourth annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards has announced its honorees and will be presenting Jonathan Majors with the perseverance award at its Los Angeles event on June 21.

The award, per the organization, is “given to an individual who has shown that no matter what adversity they face, they will continue to aspire to inspire.” It comes after Majors was convicted of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment in December. He was sentenced to a 52-week, in-person domestic violence intervention program in April.

Majors has made a handful of public appearances in the past few months — walking red carpets alongside girlfriend Meagan Good — but an awards acceptance speech will likely see the actor making rare public comments about the past year, with charges stemming from an incident with ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

In addition to Majors, the event will recognize designer Christian Louboutin with the innovator award, Cardi B...

Glastonbury Co-Organizer Blames Music Industry “Pipeline” Problem for No Female Headliners
Image
Arctic Monkeys, Gun N’ Roses, and Elton John are headlining the 2023 Glastonbury Music Festival, signifying a more legacy focused – and very male — direction for the iconic British event. And while calls have intensified in recent years for music festivals and awards shows to diversify their bills, Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis says a “pipeline” problem within the industry is to blame for not developing headline-worthy women artists.

Speaking to The Guardian, Eavis insisted that diversity of all identities was a big Glastonbury focus, noting that 46% of the lineup features people of color (48% of the names on the bill are women). “We’re trying our best so the pipeline needs to be developed,” Eavis said. “This starts way back with the record companies, radio. I can shout as loud as I like but we need to get everyone on board.”

Of course, Lizzo — who is performing right before Guns N’ Roses on Saturday,...

Emily Eavis says Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses will play Glastonbury – but addresses all-male headliners
Image
The Glastonbury 2023 headliners have been announced by Emily Eavis.

The festival’s co-organiser shared the news in an article discussing “pipeline” problems related to the all-male headlining line-up.

Joining Elton John will be Arctic Monkeys on the Friday, headlining for their third time, with Guns N’ Roses playing the Saturday slot.

Eavis said that Guns N’ Roses replaced a female singer who “changed her touring plans”.

While Eavis didn’t name names, it’s strongly suspected she was alluding to Taylor Swift, who was originally set to perform in 2020 when the festival was cancelled due to Covid.

However, Eavis expressed excitement about the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” rockers’ Glastonbury debut, telling The Guardian: “They’ll be brilliant and provide something totally different to the rest of the headliners.”

She said that Lizzo will “open” for the band, with the “About Damn Time” singer receiving joint headline billing on the poster.

Diddy Helps Uber One Make A Jingle In Viral Super Bowl Ad
Image
Earlier this month, Uber released a 30-second preview of their Super Bowl commercial, which featured Sean Combs, aka Diddy, being asked to record a song for Uber One.

While the preview shows Diddy refusing to do a jingle, he does agree to record a hit for the company and invited the viewers to “meet me at the studio.”

With the help of Diddy, Uber did indeed deliver “one hit for Uber One” – or rather multiple versions of multiple hits for Uber One – in their Super Bowl Lvii commercial.

With throwbacks to classic songs like “This is How We Do It,” “Milkshake” and “I Love You Always Forever,” the ad shows Diddy recording in the studio with strategically placed Uber Eats deliveries, and includes cameos of artists Montell Jordan, Kelis, Donna Lewis and even “What Does the Fox Say” Norwegian comedy duo, Ylvis.

The Masked Singer (2019)
The Masked Singer: Every contestant who has ever been revealed on the UK show
The Masked Singer (2019)
The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.

Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.

Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.

One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).

So here’s a full list of who appeared on seasons one, two, three and four…

Season one

Winner: Nicola Roberts – Queen Bee

Jason Manford – Hedgehog

Katherine Jenkins – Octopus

CeeLo Green – Monster

Denise van Outen – Fox

Jake Shears – Unicorn

Skin – Duck

Hunters Season 2 Trailer: They're Back For One Last Hunt, And It's A Big One
Image
Prime Video's Nazi-hunting series "Hunters" returns this month for a second season that has turned out to be its last, and what better way for a show like this to go out than by taking down the biggest target of all? Yep, that's right: David Weil's assassin dream team is tracking no less than Adolf Hitler himself this time around, after the first season finale revealed that the genocidal dictator is seemingly still alive in South America in the 1970's.

Also seemingly still alive? Al Pacino's Meyer Offerman, aka "The Wolf," an infamous Nazi who spent the show's first season pretending to be a Holocaust survivor himself. Logan Lerman's Jonah killed The Wolf at the end of season 1, but Pacino's still here, possibly taunting the mathematician's dreams from beyond the grave. "Come on, my friend, you look as if you've seen a ghost," he says to the camera.

Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke, Roan Curtis, and Ali Skovbye in Firefly Lane (2021)
Here Are All the Songs in ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 1
Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke, Roan Curtis, and Ali Skovbye in Firefly Lane (2021)
“Firefly Lane” Season 2 has arrived, and with it comes another loaded lineup of signature songs for the seventies, eighties, nineties and early 2000s. Throughout the shifts between three separate timelines in Tully and Kate’s friendship, needle drops help distinguish which part of their lives we’re watching, especially when it gets confusing between the older versions of Kate Mularkey Ryan (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl). Kristin Hannah’s 400+ page novel off of which the television show is based uses certain songs and lyrics to introduce the new decades, or parts of the book, like Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” and more.

Season 2 boasts two Whitney Houston songs — “I’m Every Woman” and “How Will I Know” — Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” The Knack’s “My Sharona,” Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and “Closer to Fine” by The Indigo Girls.

Britney Spears responds to claims she was criticising Selena Gomez in Instagram caption
Image
Britney Spears has denied allegations that she was criticising Selena Gomez in an Instagram caption that has since been deleted.

In the original caption, Britney spoke of women judging other women for their freedom to express themselves.

‘Don’t you just love the nerve of women who stand firmly getting awards and speak on their beliefs about not showing their bodies on instagram ???!!!!!’ Britney wrote on the social media platform.

Many fanss believed that Spears was referencing the speech that Gomez made in 2016 when accepting the award for Favourite Female Artist in Pop/Rock at the American Music Awards.

Gomez said at the time: “I don’t wanna see your bodies on Instagram. I wanna see what’s in here [your heart].”

Spears’s post continued: “They say ‘This is Not something I would do’, yet those women are the very ones who get 4 million dollar budget videos made about sucking and licking on homemade ice cream!

Beyoncé Responds to Right Said Fred's Claims That She Didn't Ask to Use "I'm Too Sexy"
Image
Beyoncé is setting the record straight. In an Oct. 4 interview with The Sun, '90s duo Right Said Fred, which features brothers Fred and Richard Fairbrass, claimed the Grammy winner didn't ask their permission to use their 1992 song "I'm Too Sexy" in her song "Alien Superstar" from her latest album, "Renaissance." On Friday, Oct. 7, Beyoncé responded to the duo's claims via her representative, per Entertainment Weekly. (Popsugar reached out to Beyoncé's reps for comment on the matter but did not receive an immediate response.)

In their interview with The Sun, the Fairbrass brothers called Beyoncé "arrogant." They also claimed they couldn't do anything about the composition being used due to their lack of status. "You are going to get into a conversation with someone who has a lot more presence and power and money than we do. And that won't go well," they said. "It's best to let it go.

“Normally the artist approaches us but Beyoncé didn’t because she is such an arrogant person she just had probably thought ‘come and get me’ so we heard about it after the fact when you did,” they claimed. “But everyone else, Drake and Taylor Swift, they came to us.”

The band’s classic hit “I’m Too Sexy” was interpolated on Beyoncé’s “Alien Superstar”, from her most recent album, Renaissance.

In a statement to Pitchfork, Beyoncé totally refuted the claim by Right Said Fred that she did not get permission.

“The comments made by Right Said Fred stating that...

Beyoncé Slams Right Said Fred’s ‘Incredibly Disparaging’ Claim She Didn’t Ask for Permission for ‘I’m Too Sexy’ Sample
Image
Beyoncé has the dates and receipts. Several days ago, Nineties duo Right Said Fred claimed to The Sun that the Renaissance singer never asked for permission to use their song “I’m Too Sexy” as a sample on “Alien Superstar.” But now, Beyoncé is clearing the “erroneous and incredibly disparaging.” claims, saying her team asked for publishing permission and paid for the composition’s usage.

“Normally the artist approaches us but Beyoncé didn’t because she is such an arrogant person she just had probably thought ‘come and get me...

Beyoncé responds after Right Said Fred claim she didn’t ask permission to use their song
Image
Beyoncé’s team have responded after Right Said Fred claimed that the singer used their song without “approaching” them.

Earlier this week the pop duo criticised the use of their 1992 hit song “I’m Too Sexy”, which is sampled on Beyoncé’s track “Alien Superstar”.

"Normally the artist approaches us but Beyoncé didn’t because she is such an arrogant person, she just had probably thought ‘come and get me’, so we heard about it after the fact when you did,” they said speaking at the 2022 BMI Awards.

“But everyone else, Drake and Taylor Swift – they came to us. To use our melody they need our permission so they send us the demo and we approve it and if so we get a co-write credit.

“With this Beyoncé thing there are 22 writers. It’s ridiculous so we would get about 40p,” the brothers added.

The 1990s group were referring to...

How Does One Song Have 24 Writers?… and Other ‘Renaissance’ Controversies
Image
Long ago, Beyoncé decided to let her music speak for herself.

“I’m grateful I have the ability to choose what I want to share,” she told Harper’s Bazaar last year, in a brief, extremely rare interview that reads as if it may have been conducted via e-mail. “One day I decided I wanted to be like Sade and Prince. I wanted the focus to be on my music, because if my art isn’t strong enough or meaningful enough to keep people interested and inspired, then I’m in the wrong business.

How N.E.R.D.’s Debut Brought the Dawn of a Boundless Era
Image
Right from the start, In Search of… stood out. I discovered N.E.R.D.’s 2002 debut at a Best Buy on the rim of Houston’s I-10 loop, sitting at the front of the store on a blue kiosk marked 6.99. I was a first-year high school English teacher, struggling to pull together all the things expected of me. There was this unfussy album cover staring at me, with a twenty-something Black guy on a battered-looking couch in a nondescript apartment playing a video game in his house clothes, blankly staring at an off-screen TV,...

Queens Unite: Beyoncé, Madonna Join Forces for New ‘Break My Soul’ Remix
Image
Beyoncé and Madonna have teamed up for a royal collaboration, “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix).” The latest remix of Beyoncé’s Renaissance single arrived on Friday, just in time to get the weekend party started.

The percolating remix interpolates Madonna’s “Vogue” with Beyoncé flipping the script for the iconic spoke-sung section of the 1990 song, where the Material Girl lists Hollywood stars from the Golden Age. In Bey’s take, she pays homage to both current and past influential Black women who have been game-changers for the culture — from Aaliyah,...

Even When Well-Intended, Changing Lyrics Retroactively Can Feel Dystopian
Image
Lyrics from two songs on Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance were updated as a result of discussions on social media. A verse on “Heated” was altered after activists noted it contained language that has been described as ableist. Then, the singer Kelis shared a series of Instagram posts expressing frustration that her hit “Milkshake” was sampled on the album without her knowledge, describing it as “theft.” Both instances raise questions about the increasing malleability of music as a digital product.

Already, albums from major musicians are often updated with deluxe editions featuring added songs.

Beyoncé
When it comes to Beyoncé, the Beyhive means bzzz-ness.   In case you've been Mia from the Internet during this past week, the Grammy's winner latest album, Renaissance, (which dropped July 29) has become a trending topic for days on end. Not only are fans celebrating and dissecting the singles included on the 16-track album, but they've also come to the singer's defense as controversies arise.   As for what some of these controversies were? Well, ahead of the album release, singer Kelis voiced her displeasure about her 2003 hit, "Milkshake," being used as an interpolation for one of Beyoncé's new singles, "Energy." However, the talk surrounding...

Beyoncé Scraps the "Milkshake" Sample on "Renaissance" Following Criticism From Kelis
Image
Beyoncé is continuing to respond to feedback: the singer removed the "Milkshake" riff interpolated on "Energy," off her new "Renaissance" album, following complaints from the song's original performer, Kelis. In a series of videos leading up to this decision, Kelis said she was not previously notified about the sample and expressed her frustrations with music-industry contracts, issues of ownership, and her splintered relationship with former collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes.

As it currently stands, the sample can no longer be heard on streaming platforms, and Williams and Hugo have been removed from the song credits available on Beyoncé's website. This also comes shortly after Beyoncé scrapped an ableist slur, the word "spaz," from the song "Heated."

The issue first began on July 25, days before the release of "Renaissance," when fans got hold of a list of the artists sampled on the album. A Kelis fan page shared said list,...

Beyoncé Appears to Remove Kelis Sample From Renaissance Album Amid Controversy
Beyoncé
It looks like Beyoncé just said bye-bye to the sample of Kelis' "Milkshake" on her new Renaissance album. Days after Kelis publicly called out the "Break My Soul" singer and producer Pharrell Williams for allegedly not telling her an interpolation of her 2003 single would be used on "Energy," the fifth song off Beyoncé's new LP, Rolling Stone reported that the controversial sampling has been removed from some music streaming services. Per the outlet, the interpolation is no longer heard if streamed on Apple Music and Tidal. However, as BuzzFeed noted, the track's lyrics video, which was originally uploaded to YouTube on July 28, still includes the...

Beyoncé Removes ‘Milkshake’ From ‘Energy’ After Kelis Called Her Out for ‘Theft’
Image
Beyoncé has removed the usage of “Milkshake” from her new song “Energy” after Kelis tore into the singer for featuring the hit 2003 song, proclaiming it an act of “thievery.”

It’s been an unexpectedly rocky release week for Beyoncé, who despite receiving rave reviews for her disco-dance album Renaissance, has had a series of blips and post-release modifications to songs.

Days before its drop last Friday, the album leaked online — a rare hiccup for the famously buttoned-up artist. Then on Monday, Beyoncé announced she would be removing the word “spaz...

‘I Meant No Disrespect’: Diane Warren’s Shady Beyoncé Tweet Sparks Debate About the Art of Collaboration
Image
The BeyHive (and much of music Twitter) swarmed songwriter Diane Warren’s account Monday after she asked, “How can there be 24 writers on a song?” accompanied by eye-roll emoji. The tweet was in reference to the credits on Beyoncé’s Renaissance standout, “Alien Superstar,” which has that same number of writers credited.

Aside from some pointed replies about her age and a red-carpet moment with Mariah Carey that clearly stung (no BeyHive pun intended), what resulted from Warren’s shade — whether intentional or not — was a public schooling on Black music history,...
