Rapper Kash Doll has joined “Reasonable Doubt” for its third season as a recurring guest star.

The Detroit-born musician will take on the role of Nisha, the close friend and assistant to Wendy (Rumer Willis), whom she is bound to by “a deeply personal loyalty,” per Hulu-Onyx Collective’s description of the character.

'Watson's Morris Chestnut Returns to His Roots in 'Reasonable Doubt' Season 3
Image
It’s been about five months since Hulu’s legal drama Reasonable Doubt was renewed for a third season, but sadly, no premiere date has been announced as of this writing. Nevertheless, the streamer has confirmed that filming is ongoing in Atlanta, which TV Insider reported, while also dropping a terrific casting update in the shape of Morris Chestnut. Chestnut has been most recently seen leading the CBS medical-mystery series Watson, which premiered earlier in January and has already been renewed for another run.

When Reasonable Doubt returns, Chestnut will reprise his role as Corey Cash in a recurring capacity. Corey is a talented defense attorney that Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi) brought in to assist on a case in the show’s second season, though as a main character. Chestnut’s anticipated return coincides with the addition of several new cast members to the upcoming season, namely, Kyle Bary as Ozzie,...

‘Bel-Air’ Renewed For Fourth & Final Season By Peacock
Image
Exclusive: Bel-Air, which helped put Peacock on the original series map, will be coming to an end. The modern-day drama reimagining of the popular ‘90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been picked up for a fourth season, which will be its last. According to sources, the final season will consist of eight episodes, fewer than the 10 episodes in each of the first three seasons.

The renewal comes three months after Bel-Air, produced by Universal Television and Westbrook Studios, released its Season 3 finale on Sept. 5. According to sources, it was preceded by behind-the-scenes budget conversations, which could explain the delay. The most recent Season 3 renewal came ahead of the series’ Season 2 finale.

Peacock stepped up in a major way to land Bel-Air in a very competitive situation when the project was taken out in 2020, handing the drama, based on Morgan Cooper’s viral four-minute spec trailer, a two-season pickup.

Revisit the Explosive Drama Between Will and His Father From "Bel-Air" Season 1
Image
Peacock's revival of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" reunites us with some of our favorite characters, in new form. Newcomer Jabari Banks steps into Will Smith's shoes as Will, while Adrian Holmes plays Banks family patriarch Philip Banks. Vivian (Cassandra Freeman), Carlton (Olly Sholotan), Hilary (Coco Jones), and Ashley Banks's (Akira Akbar) roles have also been recast, while April Parker Jones plays Will's mother. And during the show's season one finale, we finally reunited with Will's father, Lou.

For those who don't remember, Lou (originally played by Ben Vareen) abandoned his family in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" when Will was just 5 years old, leaving Vy to raise Will on her own. Per Hilary, he was "a deadbeat who left him and his mom flat." Lou went on to become a trucker and was absent for most of Will's life until season four, episode 24 ("Papa's Got a Brand...

‘Bel-Air’ Season 2 Review: Peacock Series Gets More Dramatic but Doesn’t Lose Its Charm
Jabari Banks, Jimmy Akingbola, Cassandra Freeman, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, and Olly Sholotan in Bel-Air (2022)
Last year, “Bel-Air” caught everyone by surprise. Reboots don’t usually stand toe to toe with the original. And the smart thing about Peacock’s “Bel-Air” was it didn’t try to copy its classic and still highly syndicated inspiration, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Instead, it recognized the times and did a deep dive into issues a Black cast comedy could only touch on over 30 years ago. So intra-racial class issues, mental health, jealousy and more became the primary topics in the drama format sparked by a viral video from Morgan Cooper who dared to reimagine the classic. Plus, “Bel-Air” wasn’t afraid to shake up the casting, favoring actors with darker complexions while still maintaining the spirit of the original. With that kind of success, of course the second season is highly anticipated and burdened with the question of “Will it be as good as the first?”

Sadly,...

‘Tom Swift’ Canceled at the CW After One Season
Image
“Tom Swift” has been canceled by The CW after one season, Variety has confirmed.

The news comes less than a month after the series, a spinoff of “Nancy Drew,” premiered on May 31. Sources close to the project tell Variety the decision came down to ratings, as the show failed to find an audience via linear TV or streaming. The five episodes of the series that have aired so far drew 0.1 ratings in the 18-49 demographic.

The news also comes a little over a month after The CW canceled a sizable amount of their originals, including “Charmed,” “Dynasty,” “Rosewell, New Mexico,” “4400,” “Legacies,” “Naomi” and “Batwoman.” In January, it was announced that Nexstar Media Group is in negotiations with the channel to acquire a sizable stake in it, after years of being predominantly owned by WarnerMedia.

Produced by CBS Studios and Fake Empire, “Tom Swift” stars Tian Richards as the title character,...

The CW Cancels ‘Tom Swift’ After Season 1
Riley Smith, Leah Lewis, Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Maddison Jaizani, and Kennedy McMann in Nancy Drew (2019)
The CW’s “Nancy Drew” spin-off “Tom Swift” has been canceled at the network after one season. The CBS Studios show, which premiered May 31, will finish its Season 1 run but will not be returning to the broadcast network, TheWrap has confirmed.

While the cancellation comes amid poor viewership numbers and is one of the network’s lowest-rated series on linear and digital, “Tom Swift” is the latest in a long line of shows to be axed by the network, which canceled such programs like the popular “Legacies,” “Batwoman” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”

The wave of cancellations comes amid the CW’s looming sale as parent companies Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery plan to divest from the joint venture and focus on bringing their best series in-house to their respective streaming services nationally and internationally. CEO Mark Pedowitz said in a conference call with reporters in May that “none of these were easy decisions.

The CW’s wave of series cancellations is continuing into the summer.

The network has pulled the plug on its Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift after a single season. The CBS Studios series, which premiered on May 31, will play out the remainder of its order but won’t return to the broadcast network.

Tom Swift is the 11th series The CW has canceled in the 2021-22 season, the most it has cut in a decade. The surge in cancellations comes as the network’s owners, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, are looking to sell the Mark Pedowitz-led broadcaster; local TV giant Nexstar, which owns a number of CW affiliates, is the leading candidate and, per a Wall Street Journal report this week, will take a 75 percent stake in the network, with Wbd and Paramount retaining 12.5 percent each.

As for Tom Swift,...

Exclusive: Tom Swift has swiftly gotten the boot at CW.

The low-rated, Nancy Drew spinoff only launched on May 31 and has aired six episodes to date. The series, which features a predominantly Black cast, started off as an unconventional backdoor pilot, with only Tian Richards (as Tom) getting an introduction on Nancy Drew last season. The rest of the characters were cast after the project was picked up to series in August.

We hear CBS Studios, which is behind Tom Swift, is trying to extend the options on the cast, which expire today, and plans to shop the series elsewhere.

The CW brass have said that they like the show creatively. The cancellation is said to be performance-based as Tom Swift is among the CW’s least watched series on linear, with 535K viewers in Live+7, as well as on streaming.

‘Bel-Air’ Director Morgan Cooper’s Life Was Turned Around By A Three-And-a-Half Minute YouTube Video — Deadline Disruptors
Image
Inspiration can come from the most unanticipated places, like walking the dog in the park or buying a soft pretzel at the mall. For Morgan Cooper, it came in 2019 while driving down Route 71 in Kansas City, Missouri. Heading home after shooting a low-budget beauty commercial, Cooper concocted a plan to turn ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air into a gritty short film, with Will Smith’s iconic character reimagined as an unlucky Philly teen who gets caught with a gun during a playground brawl. Rather than face a certain future behind bars, his Uncle Phil works some attorney magic and arranges for Will to start over in the wealthy Southern California neighborhood where he would attend an elite private school.

Filmed in eight days with hometown actors and locations in Kansas City and Burbank, the three-and-a-half-minute potboiler was never meant to serve as a grassroots resume for a gig...

Daddy’s Home! ‘Bel-Air’ Finale On Peacock Introduces Will’s Father Played by (Spoiler!)
Image
Spoiler Alert! Do not read unless you’ve watched the season finale of Bel-Air on Peacock.

It took a few seasons before fans met Will Smith’s dad Lou in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air (played by Ben Vareen). But Peacock’s Bel-Air — like it’s already demonstrated in its first 10 episodes — is nothing like the ’90s sitcom that starred Will Smith in the title role.

In the season one finale of the drama, Marlon Wayans shows up as Lou, the long lost father of Will (Jabari Banks). Before his unexpected homecoming, Will was led to believe by his mom Vy (April Parker Jones) and Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes) that Lou abandoned his family; in reality, Lou was serving time in prison and never wanted his son to see him behind bars.

Here, co-showrunners and executive producers T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson talk about the decision to introduce Will...

Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)
‘Bel-Air’ Review: Will Smith Is on the Run in Laugh-Track-Free Peacock Reboot
Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)
In the time of [unwanted] gritty reboots of established IP, it’s fascinating to see just how much a dramatic contemporary version of the ‘90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actually makes a world of sense. “Saturday Night Live” recently parodied this very phenomenon (and the impending premiere of Peacock’s “Bel-Air”) with its “Urkel Reboot” (of “Family Matters” fame) sketch, within the context of how easily this type of series reimagining could go so poorly. But “SNL” also took on the idea of a “serious” version of “Fresh Prince” back in 2018 as well, a full year before Morgan Cooper’s short film that led to the development of this reimagining even dropped. Most notably, “SNL’s” “Fresh Prince” sketch specifically honed in on a specific aspect of the original series’ premise (and Will Smith-rapped theme song) that ends up playing a vital role in the premise of “Bel-Air”:...

Roush Review: Where’s the Freshness in ‘Bel-Air?’
Image
About as fresh as the fourth season of a teen melodrama on The CW, albeit with rougher language, Peacock‘s Bel-Air, as you might have heard, is the dramatized version of Will Smith’s iconic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Painfully earnest and mostly stripped of its original buoyancy, this formerly amusing and entertaining fish-out-of-water story is left gasping for an original thought. The greatest asset is its new Will: Jabari Banks, who glimmers with charisma and swagger when his supportive mom (April Parker Jones) tells him, “Your crown is waiting as soon as you find the courage to wear it.” But once the 16-year-old basketball dynamo runs afoul of gun-toting thugs on the streets of West Philly, she puts him on a plane to Bel Air, where his fancy-pants Banks relatives await to give the lad a second chance. Peacock’s Intriguing ‘Bel-Air’ Flips ‘Fresh Prince,’ and Turns Low Expectations Upside-Down : TV Review
Image
No matter what it turned out to actually be, “Bel-Air” was always going to raise some eyebrows by its premise alone. As every network and streaming service scrambles to make the best (or at least most) use of their in-house IP, a grim reboot of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” for Peacock sounds like something ripped straight from a “30 Rock” joke about NBC trying to make it 1990 again through science or magic. Transforming the neon flair of the popular Will Smith sitcom into a flashy drama could be the inevitable nadir of the Hollywood reboot machine going through its recyclables. But in 2022, there are far worse and stranger inspirations for shows than older ones that succeeded — and at least in its first three episodes, “Bel-Air” proves itself far from the worst offender.

Irrespective of genre, the basic concept of “Fresh Prince” — scrappy kid from the supposed “wrong side of...
