Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: First reactions say the threequel is an inspired, dark, and emotional thrill ride
Image
Fresh off the CinemaCon roller coaster ride, critics and fans cooled their heels from the annual event with an early screening of Marvel‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the lead-up to the threequel, Marvel said the James Gunn-directed film would be the final ride for the studio’s lovable a-holes, but many believe this end marks a new beginning for the beloved superheroes of the spaceways.

I’m not cool enough to have attended an early screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray is, and from what I can gather, he thought the film was outstanding and the best of Marvel’s output since Avengers: Endgame! Suck it, Thanos!

I’ve gathered many of the first reactions to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and have posted them below. Everyone is keeping their opinions spoiler-free, so there’s no need...

How Top of the Pops Made a Nation Fall in Love With Music
Image
Weekly music show Top of the Pops counted down the UK pop charts, jam-packed with performances from bands and solo artists whose singles had been selling well that week. It ran on the BBC from 1964 to 2006, seeing off seven prime ministers, 12 major military conflicts, and three separate Sugababes line-ups. As the decades passed, viewers watched the musical, cultural and fashion tastes of a nation shifting through the lenses of their musical heroes.

But as those things changed, so did the ways in which we experienced music. It began with MTV and VH1, and continued with the proliferation of portable entertainment tech; the evolution of the internet, downloads and streaming; and our ability to listen to or watch whatever we wanted, whenever and wherever we pleased. In this futuristic soundscape, Top of the Pops became an anachronism. The show still managed to occupy a warm niche in the public consciousness thanks...

Searching Sequel Missing Early Reactions Praise Twisty Online Thriller
Image
Early reactions to Missing reveal that the screen life thriller is packed with twists and turns. The film, which is coming to theaters on January 20, is a sequel to Searching, a movie that presented its entire storyline in a found footage-style format, displaying only what can be seen on a computer screen. The original film, which was directed by Aneesh Chaganty, starred John Cho as a man searching desperately for his missing daughter with the help of a detective played by Debra Messing.

Coming off of early screenings a week ahead of the premiere of Missing, certain media notables have had the opportunity to share their spoiler-free thoughts on the film online. In general, their thoughts have been overwhelmingly positive. Many have praised the film's twists and turns, as well as the central performance by A Wrinkle in Time and Euphoria star Storm Reid, who must hold the entire film...

The Guardians of the Galaxy: First reactions to James Gunn’s Holiday Special are full of festive cheer
Image
Santa Claus won’t come to town for another month, but Marvel‘s biggest a-holes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, are ready to bring some holiday cheer to Disney+ with James Gunn‘s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. While most of us must wait until Friday to roast chestnuts over an open fire with Star-Lord and the gang, the floodgates have opened for critics to share their first reactions to the anticipated celebration packed with superheroes.

If you’re looking for a worthy addition to watch alongside Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special and the Star Wars Holiday Special, Marvel’s latest presentation will serve you a plate of laughs with a side of bacon. Kevin Bacon that is!

Despite collecting various reactions to Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, they all share a common theme. In other words, everyone is over the moon about the movie,...

Babylon: Early reactions to Damien Chazelle’s decadent look at Old Hollywood are extremely mixed
Image
One of my most anticipated films of the year, Babylon, is getting shredded across social media. Damien Chazelle‘s latest feature doesn’t hit theaters until December 23, but early reactions to the film are pouring in. They’re mixed more vigorously than a Bourbon Old Fashioned prepared by Fritz at Reese’s 1890 in Long Island, New York, and we’re here to collect some of the most extreme comments.

According to the official synopsis for Babylon, the film is “an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, Babylon traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.”

Babylon stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Tobey Maguire, and more, delighting...

Critics Choice Association Launches World Movie Awards in Another Salvo at Golden Globes
Image
In yet another move seemingly engineered to boost the visibility of the Critics Choice Awards and position it as an alternative to the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Association will introduce the World Movie Awards in 2022, which will be guided by a new branch of international members. The awards will celebrate the finest in non-English-language films.

Variety spoke with Joey Berlin, the CEO of the Critics Choice Association, who said this was a good time to reach out to those international journalists and critics who were excluded by the HFPA’s parochial entry requirements.

The Cca began enlisting members for its newly-formed international branch this spring, which Berlin said will serve as the bedrock for the World Movie Awards. Members of the international branch will also be eligible to vote for the other Critics Choice areas — TV, film and documentary.

The Critics Choice Awards will air on Jan. 9, the date...

Critics Choice Association To Launch World Movie Awards In 2022, Adds International Branch With Global Footprint
Image
The ever-expanding Critics Choice Association is now taking on the world. The group said Wednesday that it will introduce the World Movie Awards, designed to honor the finest in non-English-language films, beginning in 2022.

The Cca said this global expansion has been in the planning stages for several years and has gained fresh impetus thanks to the recent formation of an International branch of the organization, which began enlisting new members this spring.

With the current well-publicized troubles of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — including the cancellation by NBC of the 2022 Golden Globes — plus the globalization of the motion picture industry in general, the Cca has decided to strike while the iron is hot. Notably, it is offering a home to many legitimate international critics and journalists who have not been welcomed by the HFPA’s insular entry requirements (including the revelation of not having a single Black member), which that...
