Viaplay Content Distribution has sold “A Life’s Worth” to Spain (Eitb) and Greece (Vodafone) ahead of its Series Mania premiere in its International Panorama.

The six-episode drama, directed by Ahmed Abdullahi, is inspired by the challenges faced by the first Swedish U.N. battalion, sent to Bosnia in 1993.

Produced by Yellowbird in co-production with Viaplay and Arte France, “A Life’s Worth” has also licensed to Arte for France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria; Viaplay holds other world rights.

“Swedish soldiers didn’t have to go there: they volunteered. Some needed a job, others hoped for an adventure. So many of them didn’t even know what that war was about. They got more than they asked for,” said Mona Masri, who co-wrote the show with Oliver Dixon.

“The Un is a peacekeeping force. I read somewhere that many weapons weren’t functioning, because they weren’t supposed to be used.

In the midst of lunch, a family of four watches a controlled avalanche tumble towards the outdoor restaurant where they’re eating. The skiing trip just got a little busier. Deadline reports that Will Ferrell is joining Julia Louis-Dreyfus in “Downhill,” the English-language remake of Ruben Östlund’s acclaimed “Force Majeure.” Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who helmed “The Way Way Back” and won an Oscar for co-writing Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” are directing for Fox Searchlight.

Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, and Kristofer Hivju co-starred in the original, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film; Östlund’s follow-up, “The Square,” won the Palme d’Or last year.

“Obviously, Searchlight is like family at this point. We’re honored to be working with them for a third time. But, to also have our paths cross with Julia, and a fellow Groundling alum in Will, makes this all the more special and exciting for us,” Faxon and Rash said in a statement Deadline.

The end of the world is pretty terrifying, no matter how it happens. In the upcoming Netflix series “The Rain,” the main culprit is a deadly downpour that wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population.

People outrunning killer weather isn’t entirely new in apocalypse stories (just ask Jake Gyllenhaal), but it looks like this show is more concerned with what happens years later, after two children who survived the initial attack venture back out into the world to find companions. Netflix has released a trailer for a new film called The Rain, which is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of young survivors who band together to try and continue to survive a virus that is carried by the rain. Basically, they have to do everything they can to stay dry. I know the premise sounds kind of silly with a tagline like, "Stay dry, stay alive", but it actually looks really good! Horror Channel FrightFest (Aug 25-29) has unveiled the line-up of events and movies for its 2016 edition, set to be held at the Vue cinema in London’s Shepherds Bush.

Screen will host a panel on the future of the UK horror film industry, followed by the first Screen International Horror Rising Star Award [click here for the shortlist].

There will also be a horror writing master class with writer-director James Moran; a women in horror symposium; a special effects demo from maestro Dan Martin; and a discussion by filmmaker Paul Davis – who made John Landis approved doc Beware The Moon - marking the 35th anniversary of An American Werewolf In London.

The festival is also set to screen H.G. Lewis’ 1963 gore classic Blood Feast, which is getting a 4K restoration from Arrow.

Film Movement has acquired Us rights from Studiocanal to Maïwenn’s French drama My King, which has been nominated for eight César Awards and won the best actress prize in Cannes last year for Emmanuelle Bercot.

The film will receive its Us premiere at Rendez-vous With French Cinema in New York on March 9. Bercot plays a rehabilitating woman who looks back on a turbulent relationship. Vincent Cassel also stars.

Gerd Schneider’s The Culpable won the 31st Santa Barbara International Film Festival audience award on Saturday. Johannes Kuhnke and Neil Konigsberg chose Ville-Marie as the recipient of the Best International Film Award. For the full list of winners click here.

"Have you cried as an adult?" My question to Ruben Östlund, the director of ice-cold Swedish black comedy Force Majeure (2014), is not as impertinent as it might appear. It's a reference to a scene of his film in which patriarch Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke), on holiday with his family at a luxury French ski resort, implodes when he comes to terms with cowardly fleeing from an avalanche without his wife and kids. "Yeah, of course" he replies, "but not in that horrible 'man-cry' way like in the film. If you don't cry in the right way, you get no sympathy at all. If it suddenly bursts out, tears, snot, it comes out in something that is not sympathetic at all." Those kind of caustic judgements are the catalyst for Force Majeure's glacial look into human relationships.

Shooting has begun in Wales this week on underwater thriller The Chamber, starring Swedish actor Johannes Bah Kuhnke in his first film role since his international breakthrough performance in family drama Force Majeure.

The Chamber also stars Charlotte Salt (The Musketeers), James McArdle (The James Plays), and Elliot Levey (The Lady In The Van).

The Chamber of the title is a special ops unit, which commandeer a commercial research vessel and it’s submersible to locate a mysterious item at the bottom of the Yellow Sea. When an explosion causes the sub to overturn and take on water, the crew begins to understand that not all of them will escape and a fight for survival ensues.

The latest striking, singular foreign film to fall prey to the clutches of Hollywood remake artists, Swedish director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure is a gloriously uncomfortable deconstruction of masculinity and cowardice.

A middle-class Swedish family holidaying in the Alps find their picture-perfect facade beginning to crack after a not-quite-brush with mortality. During lunch at a mountaintop restaurant, a seemingly distant avalanche crashes down over the terrace and envelops everything in sight. It's a deftly executed exclamation mark of a scene, and sets in motion the almost unbearably quiet domestic drama that follows.

The disaster movie setup rapidly gives way to something much pricklier and more gripping - as it turns out, the avalanche is at a safe distance from the restaurant, but it leaves chaos in its wake nonetheless.

THR reports that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in talks to star in Fox Searchlight's remake of "Force Majeure," the hilarious and critically adored comedy directed by Ruben Ostlund.  This film about a family vacationing in the French Alps, whose lives take a turn for the comically dysfunctional after an avalanche, won Cannes' Un Certain Regard jury prize in 2014, picked up a Golden Globe nomination and was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Magnolia opened the film last Fall to rave reviews, and it's now streaming on Netflix. She will presumably play Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli, fabulous, in the original), a woman who slowly comes unhinged after her husband Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) chickens out on her and their kids during the false-alarm force of nature that threatens them.

The dust, as they say, has well and truly settled on this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. The line-up didn't include much in the way of 'big', mainstream-friendly titles, but it did provide plenty of enjoyable films, including Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, and David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows. Since these movies have already been reviewed on the Empire site, let’s consider two other Gff offerings that are worth looking out for. The first is Force Majeure, a provocative, observational marital drama that contains one of the most remarkable sequences you’ll see this year. The sequence in question takes place at a fancy Alpine ski resort, where a handsome Swedish couple — Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke) and Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) — are having lunch with their two children. After winning the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize in Cannes and going on to strong box office, great word of mouth and making the Foreign Language Oscar shortlist in December, Swedish helmer Ruben Ostlund’s Force Majeure was shockingly omitted from the Academy’s nominations roster on Thursday. Today, Ostlund good-naturedly posted the video above to YouTube in which he watches the nominations with producer Erik Hemmendorff from New York — while eating apples, questioning the familiar nominee faces, and predicting those in his category. The outcome is not exactly that of 2012’s Time Freak team who captured their nomination live to much positive emotion — but it kind of looks like that was the point. I understand Ostlund sent today’s video to Force Majeure‘s partners with a cheeky suggestion it might be a good addition to the film’s Facebook page. It apparently came with the subject line: “Worst Man Cry.

Those who follow our content know that the Best Foreign Language Film race is one of the ones we follow closely, if not the closest. Tomorrow morning the five nominees for the Academy Award in this category will be announced bringing the months long journey to an end. The real climax will happen once the winner is announced in February, but for the five lucky finalists, a nomination is already a miraculous feat. It has been a long road in which many factors besides the quality of the films come into play.

The first few submissions were announced in mid-August and from that point on dozens of countries selected a film to participate. That’s the first cut. Each film had to compete against all the other eligible films released in their respective country that year. In some cases the competition might be slight, but in territories with a sizable film industry the selection process is not as clear-cut.

Once the submission deadline arrived, a total of 83 nations had submitted an entry - a record number. Several entries came from countries submitting for the first time. Out of those 83 films I personally managed to watch a little over 60 via festivals, screenings, and screeners. I was able to chat with about 30 of the films’ directors and learn about their personal stories and how differently they each approach the filmmaking process. Every year this is really a lesson on artistic diversity, industry development, and political and social sensitivities from across the globe. It’s truly amazing.

There were many great and memorable films among the entries I was able to watch and I hope all of them get distributions deals eventually. However, as with everything, we all have our favorites. The 12 films listed below are some of the best cinematic works I witness in the past year overall, not only among those in a foreign language. Several of them are among my ten favorite films of the year and others are included in my longer year-end list. “Timbuktu,” “Gett,” “White God,” and hopefully “Tangerines” will be among my 2015 favorites.

It has been a great year for World Cinema. Go out there and see these films. They are all incredible works of art each in its own right.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.

Mikael Marcimain drama leads pack; Ruben Ostlund, Roy Andersson films follow.

With 13 nominations, Gentlemen, Mikael Marcimain’s adaption of the novel by Klas Östergren, has become one of the most nominated films in the history of Sweden’s national film awards, the Guldbagges.

Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure (Turist) follows with ten nominations, while there are seven nominations for Venice Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (En duva satt på en gren och funderade på tillvaron) by Roy Andersson.

A jury of 45 members voted in a secret ballot for the nominations in the main categories.

The Guldbagge Awards ceremony will be held on 26 January, 2015, in Stockholm.
