‘It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley’ Breaks Out In Solid Indie Weekend – Specialty Box Office
Image
New independents from documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley on the rising musician who died too young, to Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding and quirky animated Boys Go To Jupiter, Cartuna’s first outing as a distributor, made a mark this weekend. The numbers don’t necessarily move the needle on summer box office given the proliferation of big ticket studio fare led by new entrants Weapons and Freakier Friday, but they do show moviegoer interest in a variety of fare.

Topping the indie film box office, Neon body horror Together by Michael Shanks starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie added $2.6 million in week 2 on 2,225 screens for a cume of $17.2 million at a no. 9 spot.

TIFF-premiering Sketch from Angel Studios, written and directed by Seth Worley, opened to a $2.5 million weekend on 2,157 screens for a cume of $5 million and a no. 10 spot for the adventure fantasy,...

Jeff Buckley & Marc Bolan Music Docs, Animated ‘Boys Go To Jupiter’, Roman Polanski’s ‘An Officer And A Spy’ – Specialty Preview
Image
A pair of music documentaries and a live concert from Jin of BTS on his first solo tour join indie animation, a searing look at Sudan, a serial killer horror and Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut at the specialty box office as independents spot another window with fewer new studio releases. Roman Polanski’s 2019 historical drama on the Dreyfus Affair opens in New York.

The widest this weekend is Roadside Attractions’ horror-thriller Strange Harvest, written and directed by Stuart Ortiz, on 771 screens. Detectives are thrust into a chilling hunt for “Mr. Shiny,” a sadistic serial killer from the past whose return marks the beginning of a new wave of grotesque, otherworldly crimes tied to a dark cosmic force. Stars Peter Zizzo, Terri Apple, Andy Lauer, Matthew Peschio, Janna Cardia, Travis Wolfe Sr., Christina Helene Braa. This is at 94% with critics off 32 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Breaking Baz: Kristin Scott Thomas Lands Role In ‘The Cherry Orchard’ Play; Star Recalls Ordering Warship For Scarlett Johansson In ‘My Mother’s Wedding’
Image
Exclusive: Kristin Scott Thomas enjoys how she provided Scarlett Johansson, the star of her directorial feature debut My Mother’s Wedding, with a humungous Royal Navy warship to symbolize a woman working high up “in a man’s world.” With a wry smile, she says, “I think that my Naval links helped a lot.”

During a sit down with the grand dame of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses and BAFTA winner for Four Weddings and a Funeral, Scott Thomas also exclusively reveals that she’ll return to the stage in a West End revival of The Cherry Orchard, who – in opposition to Johanssen’s character – will see her play a woman who’s been brought low in that man’s world.

We begin with My Mother’s Wedding.

There are echoes of Chekhov’s Three Sisters in Thomas’s semi-autobiographical movie starring Johansson, Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham as siblings with dispositions...

‘My Mother’s Wedding’ Review: Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller Play Sisters in a Warm Family Dramedy
Image
A dysfunctional family gathering for a special occasion (be it a wedding or a funeral) has long served as a ripe dramatic backdrop for a reason. What better excuse to bring together a motley crew of characters who know exactly how best to push one another’s buttons and dredge up long-simmering resentments in the process? If Kristin Scott Thomas’ “My Mother’s Wedding” never quite reaches the heights of that well-worn genre, it is not for lack of trying. Equal parts Anton Chekhov and Richard Curtis, her directorial debut ends up being a sweet if rather modest family affair.

The premise of “My Mother’s Wedding” is as straightforward as its title suggests. Sisters Katharine (Scarlett Johansson), Victoria (Sienna Miller) and Georgina (Emily Beecham) gather for one weekend at their childhood home to bear witness to their mother’s third wedding. Twice-widowed Diana (Scott Thomas) has seemingly found love again. Only,...

Kristin Scott Thomas Says She Will ‘Never’ Direct Herself Again: ‘It Was So Hard’
Image
Kristin Scott Thomas is reveling in making her directorial debut, but is skeptical about whether or not she enjoyed pulling double duty as an actress. Thomas recently helmed her semi-autobiographical feature “My Mother’s Wedding,” which she cowrote with her husband, Bloomberg News editor-in-chief John Micklethwait. She also stars in the film as the titular “mother” character, a surrogate for her own mom; Thomas’ onscreen daughters are played by Scarlett Johansson (who just made her own directorial debut with “Eleanor the Great”), Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham.

“I’ve been curious about [directing] for a very long time,” Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve worked with a lot of directors who were actors at some point, and that is always really interesting for me, an actress, because they see both sides. They see what it’s like to be in front of the camera, and they see what it’s like to be behind the camera,...

Kristin Scott Thomas on Her Directorial Debut, Cold Calling Scarlett Johansson and Telling Her Family Story: “I Wanted to Do a Personal Project”
Image
Kristin Scott Thomas‘s first foray into directing is surprisingly personal.

“It was about about six, seven years ago,” the British star of screen and stage tells The Hollywood Reporter about the origins of her upcoming film. “I realized that my brothers had absolutely no recollection of their father.”

Scott Thomas, the eldest of five children, found herself wanting to make something for her siblings. Her father, an English Royal Navy pilot, died in a flying accident when she was just five. Her mother remarried and had more children with another Navy man, who also passed away in a similar tragedy when Scott Thomas was 11. She used to turn her memories of these two father figures into animated films for her brothers and sisters, but one day, someone suggested she make a feature film instead.

“I’ve been curious about it for a very long time,” Scott Thomas, best known...

My Mother’s Wedding Review: A Likable Yet Formulaic Directorial Debut for Kristin Scott Thomas
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2023 TIFF coverage. My Mother’s Wedding (formerly North Star) opens in theaters on August 8.

They say, “Write what you know.” So Kristin Scott Thomas does with her directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding. Co-written by John Micklethwait, the film centers on three sisters returning home to send their mother down the aisle for the third time. Her first two husbands? Best friends who ultimately died while serving their country in the Navy. And neither Victoria (Sienna Miller), Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), nor Georgina (Emily Beecham) have ever let go.

It’s the same fate Thomas herself lived through. Her biological father died in a flying accident a handful of years before her stepfather did the same. Thus it shouldn’t be surprising that her fictionalization of the same focuses on one daughter above the others––just not the one you might expect. While...

Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham star as three sisters who are returning home for their twice-widowed mother’s third wedding. As they navigate the weekend, daughters are forced to face the past and confront the future with the help of unexpected wedding guests.

‘Superman’ Takes Out Clint Eastwood’s 71% Biggest Hit at the Global Box Office
Image
Having completed three full weeks of release in theaters worldwide, Superman recently passed the $300 million mark domestically, which puts it ahead of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Directed by James Gunn, Superman serves as the first film in the newly-launched DC Universe, which succeeds the divisive DC Extended Universe founded by Snyder over a decade ago. The new movie debuted to excellent reviews, and has been largely successful, with some even suggesting that it puts the Dcu in a better position than its rival Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is experiencing major difficulties.

With over $315 million domestically and another $225 million from overseas markets, Superman hasgrossed a total of $551 million worldwide. Produced on a reported budget of $225 million, the movie will fall short of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, although it has long since overtaken the filmmaker’s previous DC project, The Suicide Squad. That film was released during the pandemic,...

‘My Mother’s Wedding’ Review: Kristin Scott Thomas’s Formulaic Family Drama
Image
With her directorial debut, My Mother’s Wedding, Kristen Scott Thomas seeks to weave together her characters’ feelings of love, grief, and more into a poignant dramatic tapestry. But what emerges is less a finely woven cloth than a tangle of narrative strands. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham as three adult daughters reuniting in England for their mother’s third wedding, the film never displays the emotional candor that would have made it feel more than just a show of prestige cosplay.

My Mother’s Wedding opens with the first of several black-and-white animated sequences that point to the memories and griefs of the characters, whose names and occupations are indicated by childlike scrawling on the screen. We meet Katherine (Johansson), a Navy captain, scrolling through old messages from Jack, seemingly a former lover. Her sisters—Victoria (Miller), a famous actress, and Georgina (Beecham), a nurse—are also en...

My Mother’s Wedding Review: All Dressed Up with Nowhere to Go
Image
A wedding in the English countryside serves as the stage, but the primary guests are ghosts. In My Mother’s Wedding, three sisters convene for the third marriage of their mother, Diana, a woman twice made a widow by the British Royal Navy.

The specters of two dead fathers, both pilots lost in service, hang in the air, their absence a palpable presence that has warped the architecture of their daughters’ lives. The sisters arrive: Katherine, a military woman; Victoria, an actress; and Georgina, a nurse. Each carries a distinct version of the family trauma, their personal histories a collection of redacted files and unresolved grief.

The film sets out to ask how the dead steer the living, positioning this weekend reunion as a catalyst for a confrontation with the past. It is a premise promising a tense psychological inquiry into the deterministic nature of loss, a look at how...

Bradley Cooper Wanted A Marvel Star To Headline American Sniper Instead
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When Clint Eastwood made a movie about the Iraq War, based on the life of the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, it was bound to court controversy. 2014's "American Sniper" told the story of real-life Navy Seal Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), who, after being deployed to Iraq, earns the nickname "Legend" for his elite sniping skills. Unfortunately, as the film shows, the enemy soon learns of the "legend" in their midst, which essentially places a big target on Kyle's back.

Insurgents aren't the only challenge he faces. Throughout "American Sniper" we're shown Kyle's experiences in war alongside his life back in the US. His wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and two children wait for their father to return even as he becomes increasingly focused on his life as a soldier.

The accuracy of "American Sniper" has been called into question,...

Controversial War Drama 'American Sniper' Shoots Onto Streaming This Month
Image
Clint Eastwood might be known for his time in front of the camera thanks to the many Westerns he’s starred in over the years, but his time behind the camera as a director is just as significant. He's helmed some of the greatest movies of all time, and won Academy Awards for such hits as The Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. That being said, in 2014 he directed what is perhaps one of the most controversial war movies ever, and while it may have been nominated for Best Picture, people still debate the validity of American Sniper to this day.

Starring Bradley Cooper as Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle, American Sniper is based on the memoir of the war veteran that was published in 2012, a year before his tragic murder. The movie traces his rise to becoming one of the deadliest marksmen in U.S. history, and the toll it...

'Madden' Star Christian Bale Is Unrecognizable as Al Davis in Set Images From Sports Drama
Image
Christian Bale is an actor that's no stranger to completely transforming himself for his roles. Whether that was becoming incredibly thin for the 2004 thriller The Machinist, regaining all of that weight and muscle for Batman Begins, or even putting on weight for his role as former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice, Bale has consistently shown impressive commitment. Now, set photos from the actor's latest project have made their way online, showcasing that Bale has yet again undergone a new transformation for his role as football executive and coach Al Davis in the upcoming Madden movie.

Bale can be seen in the set photos sporting some casual clothing and a leather jacket, though it is his three Super Bowl rings that stand out in the costume, with the actor sporting all three on his left hand. More than just the costume, Bale can be seen with a balding...

Christian Bale Looks Unrecognizable in Set Image from Upcoming John Madden Biopic
Image
Christian Bale is prepping hard for his next project, and, of course, fans can expect some physical changes. Titled Madden, he portrays the late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, and, thanks to People Magazine, we have a first look at his character behind the scenes in Atlanta.

In the new image, the American Psycho star looks unrecognizable, sporting a more weathered version of himself. He was seen in a receding hairline wig with bleached eyebrows and wearing a white V-neck shirt paired with a leather jacket, black slacks, and dress shoes. The look was completed with a series of championship rings. Not long before Bale’s Madden look, co-star Nicolas Cage was also seen in a similarly unrecognizable ensemble, complete with a wavy blonde wig and aqua blue tracksuit.

Image
Kevin Costner's Western film series, Horizon: An American Saga, keeps being saddled with issues -- and the future beyond 2024's first installment looks bleak. With part two of the four-part blockbuster still yet to get a theatrical release, one of its stars has given a "frustrating" update on its status and what's happening with the rest of the Horizon slate.

Speaking with Screen Rant at the premiere of Tyler Perry's Straw, Horizon actor Glynn Turman revealed that "not a thing" has been shared with him about Horizon since Chapter 1 hit theaters last June. However, he's hopeful Chapter 2 will soon see the light of day. “They started filming Part 3. I don’t know if they’ve continued it," he added. "I think there was a temporary shutdown, and I don’t know if they went back, but Part 2, I can’t wait to see."

Though Chapter 1 wasn't a critical...
