Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy (1969)
‘I was too busy to sleep with millions of people’: ex-boybander Eg White on penning bangers for Adele, Duffy – and a builder
Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy (1969)
The ex-member of Brother Beyond now writes chart-toppers for stars. Why has he decided to make a musical of seedy, gutter-life classic Midnight Cowboy, a film he can’t bear?

Troop into Eg White’s living room, past the bright, spacious kitchen and the yapping terriers (“Meet the unwelcoming committee!”), then descend into the snug basement studio with its underfloor heating and you will have reached the place where pop bangers are born: hits for Adele (Chasing Pavements), Will Young (Leave Right Now), Duffy (Warwick Avenue) and countless others. The Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter, born Francis White, sits in front of a desk cluttered with screens and consoles and thingamajigs. In T-shirt, jeans and trainers, he looks as lean as the neck of a Stratocaster. When he is in quizzical mode, as he very often is, four deep grooves appear on his forehead like the strings on a bass guitar.

American Idol Gets Good Ratings Despite Carrie Underwood Critics
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
American Idol judge Katy Perry left the ABC talent show, and Carrie Underwood was chosen to take over. The Season 4 winner found a lot of critics, who vented ahead of the March 9 premiere. However, the ratings soared, per The Sun, despite the negativity.

The Ratings Are Very Good

Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie remained as judges, and many people thought that any replacement might have big boots to fill after Katy left. Well, Carrie seemed to be welcomed by viewers. The outlet reported on March 17, that “a special preview to introduce the new judging panel, [saw] 5,905,000 viewers…” That was significantly high.

Carrie, Lionel and Luke On Season 23 – ABC YouTube

The numbers spoke for themselves, with The Sun noting that “the special even beat out the Season 22 finale with 5,639,000 viewers.” While the March 9 show didn’t beat the Season 22 premiere last year, when “4,620,000 fans tuned in,” Carrie’s debut didn’t kill the show.

Jamieson returns as Ashok & Foxcroft earn maiden call-ups to New Zealand T20I team
Image
Auckland, July 19 (Ians) Uncapped players batting all-rounder Dean Foxcroft and leg-spinner Adi Ashok on Wednesday earned their maiden New Zealand call-ups while pace all-rounder Kyle Jamieson made his comeback to the side for next month’s T20 tours of the UAE and England.

New Zealand are scheduled to play three T20Is against the UAE on August 17, 19 and 20, followed by four games in England from August 30 to September 5.

Jamieson is set to return to international cricket more than a year after sustaining a serious back injury in England last June. On the other hand, Foxcroft and Ashok earned their call-ups off the back of representing New Zealand A and impressive domestic form in the recent season.

Foxcroft, born in South Africa, moved to New Zealand in 2016 and is a newly qualified player for the side, having recently received eligibility approval from the Icc under its “exceptional circumstances” criteria.

Darius Campbell Danesh “Died Of Unknown Heart Condition, Was Living With Broken Neck”
Image
The girlfriend of singer Darius Campbell Danesh has revealed more sad details about the sudden death of the British singer in August 2022.

Lauren Cheek told the UK’s Sun newspaper that her late partner was suffering from a heart condition that was unknown until his autopsy was conducted.

She told the paper: “So many things could have taken him, but this [heart condition] did, and he died in his sleep.

“His mum told me they only found out [about the undiagnosed condition] after they did the autopsy. His heart was twice the size it was supposed to be, which was fitting, because that is genuinely how he was — he had so much love.”

In addition, Campbell Danesh was suffering from a longterm broken neck following a car accident that had left him in agonising pain. In 2010, Campbell Danesh was a passenger in a Porsche when it hit a wall at 70 mph after skidding on oil during a holiday in Spain.

Image
Auckland, June 8 (Ians) Fast-bowler Adam Milne has been offered a New Zealand Cricket (Nzc) central contract for the first time in five years.

Milne’s elevation to the list comes off the back of his most productive international season, in which he appeared 16 times for the Black Caps (11 T20Is and five ODIs) claiming 24 wickets at an average of 24, including a career-best 5-26 in the second T20I against Sri Lanka, the third best T20I figures by a New Zealander.

The 31-year-old, who made his international debut in 2010, was part of the Black Caps’ past two Icc T20 World Cup campaigns.

Coach Gary Stead said Milne’s offer of a central contract was well-deserved and reflected his strong and ongoing commitment to play international cricket for New Zealand, the New Zealand Cricket said in a report on its website on Thursday.

Ross Taylor wants Martin Guptill to be in New Zealand's top four ahead of Odi World Cup
Image
New Delhi, May 18 (Ians) Former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor said if it was up to him, he would have brought veteran opener Martin Guptill in the top four of the Odi side ahead of this year’s World Cup, citing the experience he would bring to the team for the mega event.

Guptill, widely considered as one of New Zealand’s best-ever white-ball openers, last played in an Odi for the Blackcaps in September 2022. Later, he was released from his Nzc central contract after being dropped from the white-ball series against India last year not getting to play a single game in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Since then, he has been busy playing various T20 leagues like the Big Bash League (Bbl) in Australia. Guptill’s tally currently stands at 7346 runs at an average of 41.73 in 198 ODIs, with a highest individual score of 237 not out.

Rishi Sunak Urged to Stop Hanging Animals Out to Dry by Animal Charities and Celebrities
Image
Two years on from the publication of the Government’s Action Plan for Animal Welfare, which promised to ‘revolutionise the treatment of animals in the UK’, celebrities including Dame Joanna Lumley, Leona Lewis, Susie Dent and Will Young have written to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stating that animals “have been badly let down”.

The celebrities, joining forces with leading UK animal charities Animal Aid, Compassion in World Farming, Four Paws UK, Humane Society International/UK, PETA UK and the Rspca, lament a lack of progress on addressing issues such as ending live animal exports, exploring action on the import and sale of fur products and banning keeping primates as pets. The signatories call on the Government to deliver its Action Plan in full.

In addition to the letter from celebrities, 25 of the country’s largest animal protection groups including the Rspca have published an open letter to Rishi Sunak, detailing...

Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq, New Zealand's Matt Henry move up in Icc Men's Odi Player Rankings
Image
New Delhi, May 10 (Ians) Pakistan’s left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq and New Zealand’s right-arm fast bowler Matt Henry on Wednesday have moved up in the Icc Men’s Odi Player Rankings after putting in notable performances in the recently-concluded five-match series which the hosts’ won 4-1.

Ul-Haq has advanced one slot to fourth position in the batters’ rankings after playing a match-winning knock of 90 in the third Odi. He is still some way away from his career-best ranking of second position, which he achieved in June last year.

The left-hander’s rise is good news for Pakistan as they now have three batters in the top four, with skipper Babar Azam number one in the list and fellow left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman at third place, with South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen sandwiched in between the Pakistan trio at second place.

On the other hand, Henry has inched up...

3rd Odi: New Zealand blunder their way to series defeat after Imam, Babar fifties lift Pakistan
Image
Karachi, May 4 (Ians) Debutant allrounder Cole McConchie made a bold unbeaten 64 and Tom Blundell (65) top-scored but their efforts went in vain as a series of errors consigned New Zealand to a 26-run defeat in the third Odi, giving hosts Pakistan an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match Odi series.

Chasing Pakistan’s 287/6. build on superb fifties by opener Imam-ul-Haq (90) and skipper Babar Azam (54) at the National Stadium here, the Black Caps were dismissed for 261 in the last over and suffered their third successive defeat in the series.

After skipper Tom Latham won the toss and elected to field first, Tom Blundell, in his first appearance of the series, top-scored but was one of two unnecessary run-out victims as the tourists made a mess of their run chase.

The opener/wicketkeeper cruised to 65 from 78 balls before taking on the arm of Mohammad Wasim when attempting a second run and falling short.

Robin Thicke on Cutting His Hair After First Radio Single, Turning a Bank Robbery Into a Song and Writing for Michael Jackson
Image
Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.

“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.

While still recording his own music, he went on to develop his musicality by writing and producing for others, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jordan Knight, Brandy, Raven-Symoné, 98 Degrees, Marc Anthony, Mya, Color Me Badd, Guy Sebastian, Brownstone, Will Young, Kevon Edmonds, Ron Keating, Chante Moore and others.

But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

“My hair grew down to my shoulders, and I ended up meeting Andre Harrell, who changed...

Fakhar Zaman's ton sets up Pakistan's 500th win in ODIs via 5-wicket victory over New Zealand
Image
Rawalpindi, April 28 (Ians) Pakistan opener Fakhar Zamans ninth century in Odi cricket helped the hosts secure a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the series opener at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Through this, Pakistan also claimed their 500th win in ODIs, becoming only the third team to do so after Australia and India.

Chasing 289, Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq shared a solid 124-run opening stand. After scoring his 15th Odi half-century, Imam was trapped leg-before by leg-spinner Ish Sodhi in the 22nd over, departing for 60 off 65 balls, laced with five fours and one six.

After ‘mam’s departure, Zaman added 90 runs for the second wicket with captain Babar Azam and also brought up his ninth Odi century in the 35th over. Babar missed out on his 25th Odi half-century by one when he was caught behind off pacer Adam Milne in the next over, with Shan Masood too departing cheaply.

Mark Chapman added to New Zealand Odi squad in Pakistan
Image
Rawalpindi, April 25 (Ians) Left-handed batter Mark Chapman was on Tuesday added to the New Zealand Odi squad for the five-game series against Pakistan, which starts here on Thursday.

Sri Lanka miss out on direct Cricket World Cup qualification after New Zealand loss
Image
Hamilton, March 31 (Ians) Sri Lanka have failed to snatch the eight spot in the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League table after losing to New Zealand in the third Odi here.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka opted to bat first in the crucial encounter. But the Sri Lankan batters failed to fire yet again, struggling against the pace and bounce of the New Zealand bowlers.

Matt Henry (3/14), Henry Shipley (3/32) and Daryl Mitchell (3/32) were all outstanding with the ball, as Sri Lanka huffed and puffed to cross the 150-run mark.

For Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka (57 off 64), Dasun Shanaka (31 off 36) and Chamika Karunaratne (24 off 42) were the only batters to show any form of resistance. The visitors were bowled out for 157 in 41.3 overs, with their bowlers now facing a herculean task of getting their side over the line.

In reply, New Zealand’s chase got off to a rocky start as...

Tom Latham to captain New Zealand in T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan
Image
Auckland, March 26 (Ians) Left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham will return to T20I action for the first time since 2021 to lead New Zealand in their upcoming series against Sri Lanka at home and then facing Pakistan in away conditions.

Latham will captain both squads which feature potential debutants in Chad Bowes and Henry Shipley, along with several players returning to T20I on the back of strong international and domestic form, with regular New Zealand players set to feature in the Indian Premier League (Ipl).

“We saw against India earlier this season the power and range of shots that Tom possesses. His adaptability also means he can feature in a range of batting positions. He led an inexperienced T20 squad to Bangladesh in 2021 and we were really impressed with his leadership of that group during a Covid bubble tour,” said head coach Gary Stead in a statement.

Image
Christchurch, March 12 (Ians) New Zealand’s senior left-arm fast-bowler Neil Wagner has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka, starting from Friday at the Basin Reserve, after a scan on Sunday during the ongoing first Test at Hagley Oval revealed he has a bulging disc in his back and a torn right hamstring.

Wagner felt pain in his right leg while bowling on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval and was taken for scans, which showed the injuries, with an estimated recovery time of six weeks.

New Zealand Cricket (Nzc) further said in its official update that if required, Wagner will be available to bat for the hosts’ in the ongoing Test match in Christchurch.

Head coach Gary Stead said the whole team were feeling for Wagner.

George Michael: Outed review – The lack of remorse from those who wrenched star out of the closet is staggering
Image
At the height of his fame, George Michael had two options – both bad. If the pop superstar had told the world he was gay in the 1980s, his screaming, adoring, grabby female fans might have been afraid to touch him. Misinformation about Aids had begun to seep into society. Coming out, though, would have at least meant that he was free. If the Wham! singer hid his sexuality, he’d be the subject of relentless rumour and press intrusion and, when it finally became impossible to conceal it any longer, he’d be faced with accusations of hypocrisy for living a double life, for decades, in the public eye. The path he took, in the end, was the latter, but it all imploded in 1998 when he was arrested in a Los Angeles public toilet for “lewd conduct” (he was cruising for sex with men). That incident, and the media frenzy that ensued,...

Image
Auckland, March 2 (Ians) New Zealand on Thursday named the 13-member squad for Sri Lanka for their two-Test series against Sri Lanka that begins on March 9.

All 13 players who took part in their recent 1-1 draw with England have been named, with the omissions from that squad being the uncapped seamer Jacob Duffy, leg spinner Ish Sodhi, and the injured Kyle Jamieson.

Veteran fast bowler Tim Southee will lead the squad while the batting will continue to be anchored by Kane Williamson, with Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young for support.

Meanwhile, Tom Blundell will continue behind the wicket, with Michael Bracewell the key in the spin department. Neil Wagner will lead the pacers along with Southee, the line-up including Matt Henry, Blair Tickner and Scott Kuggeleijn.

Jamieson, who was withdrawn from the squad initially named for that England series, is due to undergo back surgery...

2nd Test: Anderson, Leach strike as England dominate against New Zealand
Image
Wellington, Feb 25 (Ians) Veteran pacer James Anderson (3-37) and left-arm spinner Jack Leach (3-45) shared six wickets as England reduced hosts New Zealand to 138/7 in their first innings in the second Test on Saturday.

After England rode on brilliant centuries by Harry Brook (186) and Joe Root (153 not out) to declare their innings at 435/8, Anderson and Leach got into action to strangle the New Zealand innings, leaving the hosts trailing by 297 runs at stumps on the second day of the second and final Test.

The visitors have taken a dominant position in the match and are looking at the prospect of sweeping the series 2-0.

Anderson struck in the fifth ball of his opening over when he got one to seam from middle and leg to take a nick off the shoulder of Devon Conway’s bat to land in the hands of wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.

Reduced to 1/1, the hosts were...

Brits are ‘Harry’s House’ as Styles sweeps the board with four wins
Image
The 2023 Brit awards have come to a conclusion – albeit a slightly uneventful one.

Britain’s biggest night in music saw a number of repeat winners, with Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg and Harry Styles taking home multiple awards.

The awards ceremony was held on Saturday 11 February.

The event kicked off at London’s O2 arena with a star-studded red carpet. Celebrities including Styles, Sam Smith, Salma Hayek, Lewis Capaldi, and Ellie Goulding struck a pose.

Smith, in particular, turned heads in their shiny black inflatable latex jumpsuit. You can see the boldest looks from the Brits here.

Comedian Mo Gilligan returned to host for a second time. The Masked Singer judge and Netflix star took over hosting duties from long-time presenter Jack Whitehall in 2022.

Unfortunately, Gilligan seemed to run into some technical issues with his autocue, when he appeared to introduce Wet Leg as “One Leg” and Lewis Capaldi...

Kyle Jamieson returns to New Zealand squad for England Tests
Image
Auckland, Feb 2 (Ians) New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson is set for an international return after recovering from his back injury as he was named in the 14-member Test squad to face England in a two-Test series at home, starting later this month.

Jamieson last played for New Zealand against England in the Nottingham Test last year, when he was forced off the field with a back injury. Missing in action for more than seven months, he recently played T20 and List A cricket for Auckland.

The tall fast bowler is one among five quick-bowling options in the squad with skipper Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Matt Henry and Blair Tickner the others.

“Kyle is a very determined character with a strong desire to play international cricket for New Zealand. Since he was forced from the field in Nottingham he’s been very clear that he wants to get his body right to return,...

American Love Island UK Fans Think Hulu Needs New Contract With Show
Image
Love Island UK season 9 is now available in the US via Hulu, but American fans wish they weren't so behind on the episodes. The season premiered in the UK on January 16th and introduced 10 new islanders to a South African villa. This season is the first time the series has aired in the winter since 2020. Former host Laura Whitmore has departed the show, and Maya Jama has taken over. Luckily, Iain Stirling, who's been narrating the series since season 1, has returned, putting his witty sense of humor to work. American fans waited impatiently, but as of January 30th, the season is finally streaming on Hulu.

Unfortunately, Love Island UK only airs one episode a day on Hulu, and American fans are angry that they are so behind on the season while UK fans are watching in real time.

The Masked Singer (2019)
The Masked Singer: Every contestant who has ever been revealed on the UK show
The Masked Singer (2019)
The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.

Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.

Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.

One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).

So here’s a full list of who appeared on seasons one, two, three and four…

Sam Mendes says gender-neutral Oscars are ‘inevitable’
Image
Sam Mendes has discussed the topic of gender-neutral awards, saying he thinks it is “inevitable” that the Oscars will go in that direction.

During a new interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, the Empire of Light director was asked about Emma Corrin’s call to eliminate gender from awards shows.

“I have total sympathy with it, yeah, and I think it might well be inevitable in the end,” he said. “I think that’s the way it’s moving and I think that it’s perfectly reasonable.”

He added: “For me, people forget with awards, I think this happens all the time, they use it as a bellwether for the industry but the truth is awards are a TV show. You know, awards are there to promote films.

“If that film wins an award, I’m more likely to go and see it and that’s what you’re doing there.

Welsh national anthem: Lyrics, meaning and history as Wales face Iran in Qatar World Cup
Image
The Welsh national anthem has become a talking point around the world since Wales’s team began competing in their first World Cup since 1958.

Wales’s stirring anthem is called “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, which translates to “Old Land of My Fathers” in English.

When the Welsh team, headed up by captain Gareth Bale, and 3,000 Welsh supporters belted out the anthem at the country’s opening match against USA on Monday 21 November, it gave goosebumps to footballs fans around the globe.

Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg tweeted at the time: “Well Wales have won the national anthem singing contest. Their players looked proud to belt out their anthem while the US team looked faintly embarrassed to be singing in public.”

This year marks the first time the anthem has been sung at the tournament. The last time Wales were at a World Cup, they sang “God Save the Queen”.
