Emmy-Nominated ‘Slow Horses’ Writer/EP Will Smith To Exit Show After Season 5; Reveals Emotional Farewell And His Dream Spin-Off
Image
Slow Horses writer and executive producer Will Smith has revealed to Deadline that he will close the door on Slough House for good after Season 5, which will premiere this fall on Apple TV+.

Smith, set the tone and kept the bar high for the faithful screen adaptation of Mick Herron’s series of spy novels, and has shepherded Slow Horses all the way from its inception. He admitted “there were certainly some private tears” as Season 5 production came to a close.

Smith is Emmy-nominated in Writing and Drama Series this year and won for Writing last year. Slow Horses has already been renewed up to Season 7 and Smith has handed over the reins for Season 6 to Gaby Chiappe, and Ben Vanstone for Season 7, but will not remain on the production in any capacity beyond Season...

The Future of Apple TV+’s ‘Slow Horses’ Has Been Decided Ahead of Season 5 Premiere
Image
Slough House must be doing something right. Despite their infamous ability to fumble their missions, the agents from Slow Horses are getting yet another season to keep trying to be the best among the worst. Today, Apple TV+ announced that the hit thriller series led by Gary Oldman (Oppenheimer) has been renewed for Season 7. The announcement comes before Season 5 even premiered on the platform. The newest season debuts this September, and Season 7 will probably debut in 2027.

The early renewal indicates that, once again, Apple TV+ is happy with the content that showrunner Will Smith (Veep) has been delivering year after year. The series has been repeatedly praised with every new season, with its four seasons averaging a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and Seasons 2 and 4 earning a 100% score each. Additionally, the show has been nominated at the Emmys, BAFTAs, and several other awards throughout its run.

In an official statement,...

‘Slow Horses’ star Rosalind Eleazar gets real about her MI5 outcast Louisa Guy: ‘She’s really not Ok’
Image
Rosalind Eleazar captures the grief hidden beneath MI5 outcast Louisa Guy’s steely exterior with a subtle and restrained touch that reveals Louisa's grief in flickers. Her performance isn't overplayed; it's deeply felt, letting quiet glances and restrained gestures speak volumes about her character's inner turmoil in the Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

"She is one of the more grounded characters, but I do think her internal life is incredibly chaotic. She's a hard shell and it takes time for us to see glimpses of her," Eleazar tells Gold Derby. "I've had fun teasing her out over the seasons, and we get to know her better, more and more, but I think she's a loner. I don't think she has many friends. I think she has shut herself off to the potential of love or happiness in some way. Sometimes I think her groundedness is actually her protecting herself,...

Gary Oldman on ‘Slow Horses’ being ‘an extraordinary show to work on’ and ‘one of the highlights of my career’
Image
Gary Oldman is clearly having a ball playing the gruff, ill-mannered and often underestimated Jackson Lamb in the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

"We often laugh actually, while we're doing it. We crack up and then and do retakes," he tells Gold Derby. "It's been an extraordinary show to work on, not only because the material is very good and obviously the character is just a dream. But it's been really made all the more special because of the people working on the show. And that is really across the board from makeup, costume, Dp, camera operator, clapper loader, although they're not really clapper loaders anymore," he says. "I love regrouping after a break and then getting back and seeing everyone. The set is very easy to work on in that respect. Just an incredible bunch of people and that really has made it, I think, one of the highlights of my career.

‘Slow Horses’ set to become Apple TV+’s longest-tenured show with Season 6 renewal
Image
“Slow Horses” is Apple TV+’s Clydesdale. The streaming service has given the Gary Oldman-led spy drama an early Season 6 renewal, which means the reliable workhorse of a show is likely to become Apple TV+’s first series to run for more than five seasons. The announcement comes just after the conclusion of Season 4 on October 9. Apple announced the Season 5 pickup back in January.

Technically, “For All Mankind,” one of Apple TV+’s launch titles in 2019, has been running for longer than “Slow Horses,” which premiered in 2022. Both shows have released four seasons, and “For All Mankind’s” fifth (and a spinoff) is in the works. But “Slow Horses” is an anomaly in the streaming industry because it moves really fast. Previous seasons of “Slow Horses” have shot back-to-back, which reduces the amount of time the show takes between seasons. Two six-episode seasons were released in 2022, and the show...

Per Apple TV+, Slow Horses has officially been renewed for Season 6. The renewal comes days after Season 4 wrapped up earlier this month, and it's very early, as Season 5 is not expected to arrive until sometime in 2025. Kristin Scott Thomas also stars as MI5 deputy boss Diana Taverner alongside Jonathan Pryce, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke and Samuel West.

Previous seasons have included appearances from Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan, Sope Dirisu and Olivia Cooke.

Apple’s first-look trailer for Season 5 of spy hit “Slow Horses,” which dropped on the streamer following Wednesday’s Season 4 finale, features a few eyebrow-raising developments, including River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) kissing a surprised Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar).

Image
Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 4's ending.

In the Slow Horses season 4 finale, all the pieces of the show's intricate puzzle finally come together. At the end of Slow Horses season 4, episode 5, Patrice (Tom Wozniczka), Frank Harkness' (Hugo Weaving) only remaining son-turned-assassin, frees his half-brother, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), from Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley). With River's connection to Frank out in the open, the two men trade verbal blows. Frank desperately wants River to leave Slough House for mercenary life. Meanwhile, James Whelan (James Callis), the ever-incompetent First Desk, orders a "shoot to kill" directive on both Frank and River.

Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar) calls upon Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) to trace River's phone. One grenade and a chase on foot later, River tracks down his father, allowing Flyte to finally arrest Frank. Once he is in custody at the Park, Frank reveals his insurance policy to...

Gary Oldman on ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4 Death Count: ‘We Kill People Off, That’s What We Do’
Image
This article contains spoilers for the first four episodes of Season 4 of “Slow Horses”

Jackson Lamb, Gary Oldman’s gruff, grizzled spy in “Slow Horses,” cares more about the agents under his command than he lets on, as the actor told TheWrap in a recent interview.

In the Season 4 premiere episode, the audience is led to believe that River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) has been shot and killed by his own grandfather David (Jonathan Pryce). Lamb identifies the body — which is unrecognizable thanks to a shotgun blast to the face — as Cartwright, leading the rest of his agents to believe that River is really dead.

We later learn that the dead man is a French assassin who only resembled River. And that River is now in France trying to trace the assassin’s steps.

“That’s what we do, We kill people off,” said Oldman with a smile over Zoom.” So...

‘Slow Horses’ Antagonist Hugo Weaving Teases Thrilling Finale: “Great Way to End a Season”
Image
All the pieces are in place for a gripping Slow Horses finale — season four antagonist Hugo Weaving certainly thinks so.

The Brit, best known for his role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, joined this season’s cast of Apple TV+’s hit spy thriller based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron. Weaving stars as Frank Harkness, a former CIA agent-turned-cult leader aiming to populate the planet with trained killers (who will gladly do their father’s sinister bidding).

But as the season has unfolded, viewers have come to realize Harkness might be none other than River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) biological father — after all, the physical similarities between River and “Robert Winters” a.k.a Betrand, who Jonathan Pryce’s David Cartwright shot and killed, are pretty eerie.

Meanwhile, Gary Oldman‘s greasy, drunk yet impossibly wise Jackson Lamb has made it his mission to locate the elder Cartwright,...

Irish Actress Ruth Bradley Finds Success on Hit Show “Slow Horses”
Ruth Bradley
Ruth Bradley has found success playing the character of Emma Flyte on the Apple TV+ spy drama “Slow Horses.” The Irish actress earned the role after a blind audition where she was impressed by the high-quality writing. Bradley has since completed filming for the show’s fifth season and will begin work on the sixth.

Bradley remembered being drawn to acting from a young age after seeing Gary Oldman in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” She was fascinated by how actors could completely change their appearance. Years later, Bradley feels lucky to act alongside Oldman on “Slow Horses.” She said Oldman is very kind and likes tea with biscuits, showing his down-to-earth personality on set.

In the past, Bradley’s roles often required her to transform her appearance through different hairstyles and costumes. However, her character Emma Flyte does not look very different from Bradley. This marks a change from Bradley’s...

Breaking Baz: ‘Slow Horses’ Star Ruth Bradley Reveals How Gary Oldman’s ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ Captivated Her Childhood Imagination; Years Later She’s Acting Alongside The Oscar Winner
Image
Exclusive: There was a top-secret code name on the sides Ruth Bradley was sent to prepare for an audition. “I didn’t know who the characters were, I didn’t know what the show was, but I was like, this dialogue is some of the best dialogue I’ve ever read.”

Bradley immediately emailed her agent: “Who wrote this stuff? It’s amazing.”

Smiling, Bradley recounts: ”They said, ‘Well, actually, it’s Slow Horses.”

That was Bradley’s prelude into the world of Slow Horses and Jackson Lamb, the Falstaffian slob who came in from the cold to oversee intelligence service agents exiled to serve out of harm’s way — they think — in a dilapidated dwelling known as Slough House.

Bradley, at that point, had vaguely heard of Mick Herron’s series of award-winning thrillers upon which the show is based, but she hadn’t then seen any of the...

Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: David Cartwright's Real Connection To Frank Harkness & 7 Other Reveals
Image
In Slow Horses season 4, episode 5, "Grave Danger," some of the show's lingering mysteries are finally unraveled. While the previous outing, Slow Horses season 4, episode 4, all but confirmed that River Cartwright's (Jack Lowden) mother was one of the women who lived at Les Arbres, the fifth episode doesn't skirt around the big reveal. At the end of episode 4, River snuck into his grandfather's house only to be apprehended by Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new (and already disillusioned) Head of the Dogs. Meanwhile, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) made it his mission to locate David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce).

With Flyte's Dogs hot on the elder Cartwright's heels, Lamb employed the help of former Slough House agent Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) and Sam Chapman, David's ex-bagman. While Standish and Lamb managed to flee the scene with David, Chapman went off on his own to retrieve his flight fund. Before he could flee the country,...

‘Slow Horses’: James Callis Says ‘Diana Is Claude’s Security Blanket’

How will MI5, specifically First Desk Claude Whelan, react? TV Insider talked to James Callis about that, his character’s dynamic with Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), who’s clearly much more comfortable in charge, and more. The fifth episode ends with River being taken at the end of the episode. What can you preview about how Claude deals with that in the finale? Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: MI5's Connection To Les Arbres & 8 Other Reveals
Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in Slow Horses (2022)
Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 4, episode 4, "Returns."

Slow Horses season 4, episode 4, "Returns," reveals a lot more about Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving) and the mysterious Les Arbres compound. As seen in Slow Horses season 4, episode 2, River Cartwright's (Jack Lowden) investigation into why his doppelgnger was sent to assassinate his grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), takes him to Lavande. A small town in France, Lavande is home to an abandoned compound, which River later learns is called Les Arbres. Meanwhile, back in London, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and the rest of Slough House's agents try to cover for River, who effectively faked his own death.

The blood test results have tipped both Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), MI5's Second Desk, and Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new Head of the Dogs, off about River's plan. As the pair work to track down the Cartwright men, Taverner uncovers another insidious thread.

Why River Cartwright Goes To France In Slow Horses Season 4
Image
In addition to reiterating that the real River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) is alive and well, Slow Horses season 4, episode 2, "A Stranger Comes to Town," follows the young Slough House agent to France, leaving some viewers puzzled about River's actions. Based on Mick Herron's Spook Street, the fourth outing of Apple TV+'s unconventional spy thriller throws audiences into the deep end right off the bat. In Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), River's grandfather and a retired MI5 agent, navigates worsening dementia. As a result, David shoots and kills an intruder in his house.

Fearing that he had accidentally shot his own grandson, David presses his panic button, but goes missing before MI5 turns up. Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new Head of the Dogs, calls Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) to the scene to identify River's body, even though she has already found his ID and wallet in the victim's pockets.

Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Diana Taverner's MI5 Cover-Up & 6 Other Reveals
Image
Slow Horses season 4's second episode picks up right where the premiere episode left but first, it backtracks a bit to provide clarity about what really happened to River Cartwright (Jack Lowden). An adaptation of Mick Herron's Spook Street, the fourth Slough House novel, Slow Horses season 4's story puts River and his grandfather, retired MI6 operative David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), in the middle of the action. In the fourth outing's first episode, River contemplates moving his grandfather, who raised him like a son, into an elder care facility, so that he's supported as his dementia worsens.

Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, "Identity Theft," complicates these personal matters when a paranoid David kills a man. The intruder, who David fears is trying to impersonate River, might also have a connection to a recent car bombing at a London shopping center. Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new Head of the Dogs,...

Slow Horses Season 4s Massive Book Change Is A Relief For Slough House
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, "Identity Theft."Although Slow Horses season 4 adapts the fourth Slough House novel, Spook Street, it makes a few key changes to the story, including bringing Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) back into the fold. At the end of Slow Horses season 3, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) manages to get his hands on the "Footprint" file, which contains some incriminating information about MI5. While his grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), believes River should destroy the file and protect MI5's reputation, he decides to leak it. Admittedly, Slow Horses' MI5 isn't always accurate, but this results in a slew of changes for the agency.

Using Mick Herron's Slough House books as a foundation, Slow Horses season 4's story opens with a series of startling incidents. One night, an apparent terrorist drives a car bomb into a crowded shopping center. Elsewhere, a paranoid David, who was a Cold War-era operative,...

Slow Horses Season 4 Review: Lamb Raises the Bar Yet Again
Image
If there’s one area of expertise belonging to the misfit spies of Slough House, it’s screwing up. Sent to MI5’s administrative backwater after various career-ending mishaps, they’ve earned their dismissive department name well. But what Jackson Lamb’s crew may lack in field competence, they more than make up for in dysfunctional charm. Their boss is especially rude, lazy, and perpetually sauce-stained; it’s remarkable that anything gets done with Oldman in charge.

Now four seasons in, the rascals are still somehow stumbling their way to success. Particularly impressive given the breakneck two-year pace of new episodes so far. Once again written by Will Smith and based on Mick Herron’s novels, this latest run pushes the band of misfits into yet another shambolic spy caper. What began with a festive shopping center bombing branches off into tangled threads of past wrongs, family secrets, and a...

What Really Happened To River Cartwright In Slow Horses Season 4
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Slow Horses season 4, episode 1Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, "Identity Theft," has viewers wondering what really happened to River Cartwright (Jack Lowden). Although River has been working for Slough House head Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) for three seasons, he still isn't a veteran MI5 operative not by a long shot. However, one of Slow Horses' cast of characters who is is his grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce). David, who raised and supported him since childhood, is a legendary MI5 agent, having been a major player in the service. Previously, David even opted to destroy the incriminating "Footprint" file, putting MI5's reputation first.

As evidenced by season 3's final moments, David and River don't see eye-to-eye about holding MI5 accountable for its actions. River, who cleverly makes a copy of the "Footprint" file, leaks the information to the public, resulting in some major "First Desk" shakeups. However,...

Slow Horses Season 4 Cast & Character Guide
Image
Slow Horses is back for its fourth outing, prompting many returning viewers to wonder who is in the hit Apple TV+ show's cast. Slow Horses season 4's story will pull its plot and characters from Spook Street, another entry in Mick Herron's Slough House series of books. So far, the unconventional British spy thriller has adapted Herron's Slow Horses, Dead Lions, and Real Tigers, promising another Slow Horses entry that differs from the books in small ways, all while capturing their spirit. The series centers on MI5's Slough House the purgatory for "slow horses" who've made career-ending missteps.

Despite being relegated to drudgery, the Slough House agents end up involved in high-profile cases often thanks to Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the rude-yet-perceptive veteran agent who heads up Slough House's team of incompetent misfits. In Slow Horses season 3's ending, Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), the office administrator, resigns from Slough House,...

Slow Horses season 4 episode guide: Everything to know so you don't miss out!
Image
Slow Horses is about to unveil its fourth season so here’s a quick guide on how to tune in to the latest ride for the quirky British spy series! Are you ready for season 4?

Debuting in 2022, Slow Horses adapts the spy novels by Mick Herron. It focuses on the Slough House, a branch of the British MI5 intelligence service that’s basically meant for the reject agents who have screwed up somehow. It’s headed by Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a sardonic, insulting, gassy veteran who seems to hate everyone around him. While they’re meant to be put on dull jobs, somehow, the “slow horses” manage to find themselves getting involved in missions that endanger Great Britain.

Each season has adapted a different novel in the series and Slow Horses season 4 is no different, adapting the 2017 book, “Spook Street.” It has the team pulled into investigating a bombing...

Slow Horses: Season 4
Image
Streaming on: Apple TV+

Episodes viewed: 6 of 6

After 2022 saw Slow Horses drop not only two complete seasons, but enough protagonist bodies to pack out a Ford Cortina, the third outing successfully lulled us into a false sense of security. Save for a kidnapping, some light torture, and a near-miss with a double-decker bus, Season 3 left our heroes largely undented. Strap in for round four, however, as showrunner Will Smith (Veep) and author Mick Herron are back on sadistic form from the get-go, not only blowing up a shopping centre in the opening scene, but placing all our heroes in the kind of mortal peril that regularly ends with a truncated cast list.

The set-up not only sees the MI5 off-cuts at Slough House trying to unravel the ongoing bomb threat, but also brings tragedy closer to home. River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) grandfather, former spymaster David (Jonathan Pryce), is showing early signs of dementia.

'Slow Horses,' Apple TV+'s Most Reliable Series, Returns With Excellent and Explosive Fourth Season
Image
The Emmy-nominated series returns on Sept. 4 with the perfect mix of suspense, dry wit, and flatulence.

Season 4 of “Slow Horses” debuts on Apple TV+ on Sept. 4 and remains one of the best shows on television. The latest installment is as explosive as ever with a break-neck pace and a lot of action (and dry wit) packed neatly into its six-episode arc. Any of the typical slow cloak-and-dagger fat you might associate with other spy thrillers has been trimmed here. For newcomers, each season of the series adapts a different book in Mick Herron’s Slough House novel series. In both the books and show, a group of MI5 agents are forced into career purgatory following various work-related sins only to routinely find themselves — often unwittingly — at the center of some of the biggest espionage cases in British history. Led by flatulent and unhygienic super spy Jackson Lamb (played by Oscar...

‘Slow Horses’ Season 4 Trailer: Jackson Lamb Still Cracks Jokes After Losing an Agent | Video
Gary Oldman
Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) is always in a joking mood — even, it seems, after losing one of his agents.

In the Season 4 trailer, which Apple released on Tuesday, the Slough House team is called into the case of a serial bomber, which rattles all of London.

We also meet a new character played by Ruth Bradley of “Ted Lasso,” who is immediately at odds with the prickly spy. When she refers to his agents as “the rejects,” he tells her, “They don’t like being called that.” When she asks what he calls his team, he naturally replies, “The rejects.”

Watch the trailer below:

When he objects to being put in cuffs, she says, “I’d rather not take any chances with a man who looks like he gropes people on buses.” His reply: “You’re being hurtful about my appearance. I might have to call Hr.”

Later in the trailer,...

Slow Horses: New Trailer For Season 4 Starts With A Bang
Image
There are many reasons why Slow Horses has become one of the most popular series on Apple TV+. The compelling adaptations of Mick Herron's best-selling, grungy, street-level spy novels. The witty dialogue from showrunner Will Smith and his team. And, possibly most of all, the foul-mouthed (and foul-bodied) lead performance from Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. All are present and correct in the first trailer for the fourth season of the show, which you can find below.

As Season Four dawns, London at large and the already unstable foundations of those in Slough House – the dumping ground for those in MI5 who have screwed up or otherwise displeased their bosses — are rocked by an explosion at a shopping centre. The event leads to personal secrets leaking everywhere, while at the same time, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) must deal with his grandfather David's (Jonathan Pryce) crumbling mental faculties.

Jackson Lamb Has a New Sparring Partner in Slow Horses Season 4 Trailer
Image
“Cuffs won’t be necessary,” Jackson Lamb tells the new Head ‘Dog’ in the first trailer for Slow Horses season four. She slaps a pair on him anyway with the retort that she’d rather not take any chances with a man “who looks like he gropes people on buses.” Affecting sensitivity, Lamb drily jokes that after such a personal insult, he might have to call Hr.

Slow Horses is back, baby.

Well, almost back. The fourth season starts streaming on Apple TV+ with a double-bill on Wednesday September 4, followed by a new episode weekly until the finale arrives on October 2.

Lamb’s season four sparring partner is Emma Flyte, the new head of MI5 internal affairs, replacing former tactical unit boss Duffy. He went the way of so many of this show’s characters after the events of last season, and now Ruth Bradley’s unflappable Flyte is on...
