"You're in the deep end now... I hope you can swim." 101 Films has revealed a new official US trailer for an indie film from Canada titled A Small Fortune. This originally premiered a few years ago and it already opened in Canada in the fall of 2021, but is only now getting its US release if anyone still wants to watch. From writer / director Adam Perry, adapting his award-winning short film A Blessing from the Sea (2017). When a desperate man finds a bag of lost money off the shores of Prince Edward Island, his decision to keep it secret turns his quaint fishing village into a growing crime scene. Everyone knows that finding a bag of money always leads to more problems and violence. The film stars Stephen Oates, Liane Balaban, Joel Thomas Hynes, Andrea Bang, and Matt Cook. This looks like it has solid production value, but will the...

"She ran away... Why didn't she take me with her?" Peccadillo Pictures from the UK has revealed a new official UK trailer for an indie film titled Wildhood from Canada, which is already out on VOD in the US. It's opening in the UK this September and we never posted the trailer for it, so why not feature this now - because it looks very good. This premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year. Two brothers – Link and Travis – embark on a journey to find their birth mother after their abusive father had lied for years about her whereabouts; along the way, they reconnect with their own Indigenous heritage and make a new friend. As a close bond begins to form between Link and Pasmay, Link learns to come to terms with his own complex heritage, identity and sexuality. Starring Phillip Lewitski, Joshua Odjick, Michael Greyeyes, Steve Lund, Joel Thomas Hynes,...

It’s a problem faced by mixed-race people all over the world, especially in youth: all of the racism, a lot less by way of community support. Link (Philip Lewitski) lives with his white father (Joel Thomas Hynes) and white half-brother Travis (Avery Winters-Anthony). his mother is long gone. his father beats him, and it’s getting worse because he’s finding it harder to hide the fact that he is two-spirit. When he and Travis are arrested for trying to scavenge scrap metal from an abandoned factory, he’s beaten unconscious by the police, and he knows that when he gets home, his father will add to the damage. Desperate, he searches through his father’s room for a means of resistance or escape, and finds, instead, a box of letters from his mother. His father has lied to him. She’s still alive, and has been writing to him all these years.

With the Covid-19 pandemic having wreaked havoc on production, the CW’s “fall” season is being winterized. The strangest TV season in memory will continue in January and February with the network setting premiere dates for 11 returning series and three new ones: Walker, Superman & Lois and Canadian pickup Trickster.
The CW in May announced that its regular 2020-21 schedule will roll out in January and unveiled a fall 2020 lineup consisting of acquisitions and the final episodes of Supernatural.
The series are launching when they are ready based on staggered production start dates and length of post-production — especially the multiple superhero shows that require elaborate special effects.
The rollout begins Friday, January 8, with the season bows of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Both unscripted veterans originally were set to air on Mondays.
The new season continues with the Season 3 premiere of Two Sentence Horror Stories on Tuesday,...

As if to illustrate the hypothetical “So you think you’re having a bad day?,” Canadian thriller “Hammer” puts its characters through a Rube Goldbergian obstacle course of peril in the immediate hours after a hijacked drug deal. The pileup of disasters is such that this tale might easily have been spun as some kind of grotesque comedy. But .
The result isn’t a knockout, falling between the territories of crime meller and family drama without quite maximizing either element. But it works well enough in that middle ground, making for a succinct, well-crafted suspense exercise likely to satisfy most home viewers who find it via digital and VOD release as of June 5.
Will Patton’s usual authority is a big plus in the role of Stephen Davis, a working-class father who exudes a quietly firm if put-upon fortitude in a household it’s hinted has known too much strife.

New York's Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA), in association with Telefilm Canada, will organize the seventh annual Canadian Front. This event will be held from March 17 to March 24, 2010. Moreover, New Yorkers will have the chance to see nine Canadian films.
Obviously, this event should help Canadian films to find a U.S. distributor and allow New Yorkers to see Canadian films that were completed over the last 18 months. As a matter of fact, it was the Canadian Front event that allowed Bruce McDonald's brilliant zombie film Pontypool to be distributed in the USA by IFC Films for instance.
This year, the Canadian Front has in store two comedies, two dramas, two coming-of-age stories, two documentaries and an old classic. Speaking about that classic, the film in question was directed by Allan King, a Canadian director who left us in June 2009 and whose work was the subject of a MoMA retrospective in 2007. So,...

This is the second film I see at the Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (Fnc). Once we get past the first half of Crackie, we get the feeling that it's interesting. In fact, Crackie is one of those rare films that deals with the inherent difficulties linked to life in a small town. Although the film might not win the Genie Award for best script, it would be a scandal if the cast's performance - especially Meghan Greeley's - is unnoticed.
Mitsy (Meghan Greeley), a girl from a small town of Newfoundland and Labrador, lives with her well-intentioned and oppressive grandmother, Bride (Mary Walsh), who earns a living as a whore. After all, ever since her childhood, Mitsy has been abandoned by her mom, Gwenny (Cheryl Wells), who only cares about drinking and sex. Besides, to top it all, Mitsy's mom lives in Alberta, a province from the Prairies.

The least we can say is that Down to the Dirt is one of the few films that rightfully bears its title. In fact, the title could certainly refer to where I'd have liked to throw it. However, since I borrowed it from my local library, I couldn't do it because I didn't want to have a librarian on my back.
Keith (Joel Thomas Hynes), a young man from a small town of Newfoundland and Labrador, is jobless and wastes his time. When he meets Natasha (Mylène Savoie) his life changes. In fact, they both decide to move to move to St-John's, Newfoundland's biggest city. However, since Keith doesn't look like someone who can get a job and smarten up, Natasha decides to leave him and to take a flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia. From this moment, Keith will do everything to win her love back.
