Chicago – Two notable entertainers have recently died, and Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com photographed them during a point in their lives. Actor Jay North was famous in the late 1950s/early ‘60s for his TV role as comic strip icon “Dennis the Menace.” He was 73 years old at his passing. Musician/soul singer and later Chicago politician Jerry “The Iceman” Butler was 85 years old.

Jerry Butler was called “The Iceman” for his smooth and unflappable singing style with the doo-wop group “The Impressions” and his solo career, and that nickname took on a deeper meaning when he served on the Cook County Board of Supervisors in Chicago in a later reinvention. Butler passed away on February 20th, 2025.

Butler was born in Mississippi, and moved with his parents to Chicago during the Great Migration. Like many soul singers of the era, he began in the gospel sound.

In his eight years on Saturday Night Live, Chris Parnell certainly left a mark. From his dead-on impression of Tom Brokaw, to his famous rapping skills, to his earning the nickname “The Iceman” for never breaking in a sketch, Parnell’s legacy on the show is impressive. There is, however, one thing that sets him apart from every other cast member ever: He’s the only guy to have been fired from the show not once, but twice.

SNL alum Chris Parnell had a reputation for never, ever breaking during a sketch. Even when everyone else was giggling themselves into oblivion around him, he wouldn’t crack. But while that commitment has been associated with the nickname, as Parnell explains below, he actually earned it far earlier than you’d think.

How did you get “The Iceman” nickname?

Colin Quinn gave it to me. It was based on my first sketch in my first show, which was a cold open. Cameron Diaz was the host, and The Smashing Pumpkins were the musical guest.

Legendary hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg is boarding the film to executive produce through his Death Row Pictures banner. Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Gibson, and Snoop Dogg jointly made the announcement today.

The long-time face of Big Brother was on hand for the 2024 CBS Fall Schedule Celebration and shared her thoughts on the reality competition show.

Celebrity Big Brother was a show that CBS introduced as counter-programming to the Winter Olympics. It offered a $250,000 prize.

The first season of CBB USA was in Winter 2018. It featured actress Shannon Elizabeth, Keshia Knight Pulliam from The Cosby Show, singer Mark McGrath, UFC fighter Chuck Liddell, and NBA star Metta World Peace.

Broadway actress Marissa Jaret Winokur won that first season, with television host Ross Mathews finishing as the runner-up.

Ice Cube’s professional Big3 league has offered the Iowa Hawkeyes’ point guard $5 million to play in the 3-on-3 half-court basketball competition. She would be the first woman to compete in the league stacked with former NBA players.

Aaron Carter came up short in his Celebrity Boxing match against Lamar Odom. On Friday, the spectacle saw the "Fool's Gold" singer and 90s pop star that is Carter taking on Odom, a former NBA star who won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. Screen Media has acquired all North American rights to the Simon West-directed Skyfire. The action disaster movie is slated for a domestic theatrical and on-demand release in December 2020.

Jason Isaacs, Hannah Quinlivan (Skyscraper), Xueqi Wang (Iron Man 3) and Shawn Dou (Wolf Totem) star in the pic that sees chaos erupt when the once dormant volcano at the world’s only volcano theme park and resort, located in the Pacific Rim’s “Ring of Fire,” starts to rumble. A young scientist (Quinlivan) must convince the resort owner (Isaacs) to evacuate the island before it’s too late.

Produced by Meridian Entertainment, Skyfire originally released in China in December last year, topping the box office on its first day out, and ultimately grossing $25M locally. It carried an 8.2 score on ticketing platform Maoyan.

Screen Media has acquired the U.S. rights to “Girl,” a revenge thriller starring Bella Thorne and directed by Chad Faust, and the distributor will release the film day-and-date this November following its premiere at Fantastic Fest later this week.

“Girl” is the feature directorial debut of “The 4400” director Faust, and the film stars Thorne alongside Mickey Rourke, Glenn Gould and Elizabeth Saunders.

In “Girl,” Thorne plays a young woman who returns to her small hometown to exact revenge on her abusive father, only to discover someone murdered him the day before. As the girl searches for answers, she soon finds herself prey to a sinister sheriff (Rourke) and uncovers a family legacy more disturbing than she’d imagined.

The story follows Reiss Gibbons (Alex Montagnani) who is looking to take the throne as the greatest to ever step inside the Legends cage. Reiss has it all: five title defenses under his belt, his beautiful wife Ellie (Georgia Bradner), a ball-busting agent Reggie (Elijah Baker) who has hooked him up with endless sponsorships, and the support of coach and mentor Marcus (Chuck Liddell). Things take a turn when promoter Max Black (Gina Gershon) pits him toe-to-toe against pro wrestling superstar Randy Stone (Jon Moxley) in the company’s first-ever cross-promotional event — which can very well be the toughest fight of his life.

Though this film doesn’t go the bombastic route that the Rocky franchise did.
