Even as he ages into his 30s, actor Calum Worthy might forever have that youthful air that brings us back to simpler, pre-covid times. Remember the days of Disney Channel's hit series Austin & Ally, in which he co-starred across its four seasons? That cheery perplexity he brought to the YA show was perfect for his next big TV project: Netflix's Peabody Award-winning parody-crime series, American Vandal. Two years later, Worthy would star in another crime-centric show, though much more vain in nature: Hulu's The Act, where he starred alongside the Emmy-nominated Joey King.
And now there's Sew Torn, Worthy's latest starring vehicle where criminals also run amok in a uniquely disjointed narrative. MovieWeb recently caught up with Worthy while he was promoting the new indie film, and the vibrant actor took time to reflect on his past crime-laced series as well — and the unlikely connection between Vandal and The Act.

Sew Torn will be available on VOD starting this Friday, June 13 and you can pre-order now.

A struggling seamstress comes upon a drug deal gone awry in Sew Torn, the feature debut by writer-director Freddy Macdonald, kickstarting a narrative structure that borrows liberally from Tom Tykwer’s propulsive Run Lola Run. The seamstress weighs her options, opening up three different story paths and outcomes. Macdonald nestles Run Lola Run’s loop-like structure inside a cozy crime thriller, the type that’s more intimate and self-contained in scale and comes heavily armed with a sense of whimsy. That it’s all stitched together by an almost preternaturally gifted seamstress makes for a visually arresting and charming debut, if a bit subdued.
“Choices, choices, choices,” Sew Torn‘s seamstress Barbara (Eve Connolly) says in the opening voiceover narration. She has no idea that she’s distilled the plot so simply; the events that follow will lay daunting choices at her feet, though she doesn’t know it yet.

Hulu has been offering entertainment for the masses since it joined the streaming wars in March 2008. Like many streaming services, the platform aims to be a one-stop shop for people looking for nostalgic favorites and new content that they can watch on demand. It even offered the Academy Awards streamed live in 2025, which unfortunately turned into an embarrassing failure.
However, Hulu still continues to strive in its mission of offering the best content possible, and that includes several Hulu Original series that stand out in the very crowded streaming landscape. This catalog contains a wide range of genres offering something for everyone, and there also plenty of genre mashups that create fresh, intriguing content that stand out from the rest.

Thread-slingers with an addiction to YouTube tutorials (like me) may have seen an amusing film by seamstress/historian Bernadette Banner in which she reacts to a bunch of films that feature actors sewing, or at least pretending to sew. Examples include How the Grinch Stole Christmas (not convincing) to The Phantom Thread. Each one is picked apart with waspish scrutiny by Banner, who can spot the difference between a vintage treadle-operated chain stitch machine and a lockstitch machine from different periods in the 19th-century. Hopefully Banner will get a chance to scrutinise this loosely sewing-themed thriller and nitpick its faux pas, such as the bit where the seamstress protagonist Barbara (Eve Connolly) seems to sew a button on a client’s wedding dress in less than a minute.

In the 1978 remake of the 1956 classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, what would Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, and Jeff Goldblum have done if they had cell phones and cameras recording everything that happened during the pod people's overtaking of planet Earth? The 2019 clever young adult horror film Assimilate examines whether such marauding would take place with today's technology at our disposal. It is a surprisingly taut and fun iteration of one of the genre's most iconic entries and is currently streaming on Prime Video. The film benefits from the excellent chemistry of its three teenage leads, Zach (Joel Courtney), Randy (Calum Worthy), and Kayla (Andi Matichak), who endure the horrifying process of seeing their friends and loved ones become possessed by an alien lifeform. Director John Murlowski's crisp pacing also makes Assimilate a thrilling ride and a creative version of one of horror's most tried and true tropes.

Charles Melton didnt start acting professionally until 2014, opting to drop out of college and move to Los Angeles to pursue a whole new career path. The former high school athlete had been interested in acting but focused on other aspects of his life. He even took a brief detour into modeling before acting, which did land him work as a model in an episode of Glee.
Since then, Melton hasnt slowed down one bit. His longest-running role has been playing Reggie Mantle on Riverdale for six seasons, but his acting roles in both TV and movies move beyond teen dramas as well. Hes proven himself an incredibly versatile performer and even earned award show buzz in 2023 after his star-making turn in the movie May December.

The best Pacific Rim sequel, Pacific Rim: The Black, is a character-driven anime-inspired series set in a post-apocalyptic Australia. Based on context clues, the show takes place after Pacific Rim: Uprising and expands the franchise's lore with new characters and a fresh setting. Although there has been talk of expanding the Pacific Rim cinematic universe, Pacific Rim 3 is not currently in development.
Although it didn't get the attention it deserved, the best Pacific Rim sequel came out in 2021 and it's much better than Pacific Rim: Uprising, the 2018 sequel to Guillermo del Toro's hit Kaiju-monster film. “Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.
It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

Freddy Macdonald’s Sew Torn is a high-stakes crime thriller for everyone that grew up obsessed with choose-your-own-adventure novels. Working through three wildly different timelines, the story follows a mobile seamstress presented with a (truly) life-changing opportunity. After stumbling across a drug deal gone wrong, Barbara (Eve Connolly) is faced with a choice: commit the perfect crime, call the police, or simply drive away. Which would you choose?
Luckily, you’re not left with any lingering questions about what would have happened in either of the three scenarios, because you’re gifted the chance to witness them all! Following the threads of each decision, Sew Torn is divided into nice clean chapters that make for a series of very unfortunate events. In fact, the film opens on the aftermath of each possible timeline, and none look especially promising. It seems each choice leads to ruin but it isn’t the destination that counts,...

Johnny Knoxville will readily admit that, while he had a great time working on Hulu’s Reboot, his first experience as a series regular did not end the way he was expecting.
In an interview published Thursday, Knoxville spoke to Vulture about the comedy from series creator Steven Levitan that was canceled last month after its eight-episode first season premiered in September. Focusing on the cast of an early 2000s sitcom reuniting for a revival, the ensemble show also starred Keegan-Michael Key, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, Krista Marie Yu, Judy Greer and Paul Reiser.
“Of course I would’ve liked it to end differently, but I realize I’m a very lucky human being. We made a great show, and it’ll be there for people to watch forever. That’s a pretty great thing,” Knoxville said. “Hopefully I’m not coming off as angry or sad. I’m so...

The satirical showbiz sitcom “Reboot” will not return for a second season, the show’s creator Steve Levitan said on Twitter Monday night. It’s apparent confirmation that the search for a new home following the show’s cancellation on Hulu has failed.
Hulu declined to renew the show late last month, and at the time Levitan was hopeful of finding a new home for his show on another network or streamer. In his statement Monday, posted on his Twitter account, Levitan also took a subtle dig against Hulu and how the streamer treated the show.

It’s final – there will be no second season for Hollywood-centric comedy Reboot, created and executive produced by Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan.
Following the recent cancellation of the series by Hulu, Levitan and producing studio 20th Television tried to find another home. There are finished scripts, produced by a writers room that had worked on a potential second season, which were sent to potential buyers. Those efforts have now been exhausted, and Reboot if officially over. Levitan alluded to that in a Twitter post Monday.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
“80 for Brady” has plenty for LGBTQ moviegoers to be excited about. Not only does it star icons Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field as friends who take a trip to see Tom Brady play in the 2017 Super Bowl, but Billy Porter plays a halftime show choreographer in the Paramount Pictures comedy.
Now I’ve learned there was even supposed to be a gay kiss. So what happened? Gus Kenworthy says his cameo in the film originally included him “making out” with his on-screen boyfriend, played by “M3GAN” actor Brian Jordan Alvarez, but the scene didn’t make it into the 98-minute movie. “They said they had to cut it for time, but I think they cut it for Middle America,” the Olympic skier told me at the Gold Meets Golden benefit for Angel City Sports on Feb. 4 in Beverly Hills.

"Reboot," Steve Levitan's snarky meta sitcom about a TV series that gets rebooted two decades after its abrupt cancellation, has been canceled. While I'd like to believe that this is all an elaborate scheme to announce a reboot of "Reboot" and make life imitate art, this isn't a bit. Hulu has officially pulled the plug on the short-lived comedy.
During its eight-episode first season, "Reboot" told the story of "Step Right Up," an early 2000s family sitcom being rebooted by Hulu for a new generation. That clever conceit paved the way for plenty of jokes poking fun at the industry through a disgruntled writers' room, an ongoing war with the Hulu executives, and the general insanity of actors navigating the press cycle, Hollywood expectations, and the changing nature of comedy. Plus, it was all wrapped up with the comfortable bow of a workplace comedy. The series starred Keegan-Michael Key,...

It’s like a bloodbath with all the shows announced to have given the axe by their respective networks. The cast of “Step Right Up” should plan to step right up to some new projects. On Monday, Hulu canceled “Reboot,” the meta-satirical series about a sitcom reboot, after just one season.

Hulu has opted not to renew the showbiz sitcom “Reboot” for a second season, the streamer said Monday.
A source close to the production told TheWrap that creator Steven Levitan, a multiple Emmy winner for ABC hit “Modern Family,” is trying to find a new home for the comedy.
The series starred Rachel Bloom as a TV executive who successfully pitches the revival of her favorite 20-year-old sitcom, “Step Right Up,” and the clashes that follow between the cast, crew and writers. It premiered on Sept. 20 to favorable reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scoring it 88 from 40 critics entries, including from TheWrap’s Thelma Adams, who called it “hilarious” and “consistently laugh-out-loud funny.”
The ensemble included Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Calum Worthy as the original “Step Right Up” cast, Paul Reiser as the series’ creator, and Krista Marie Yu as Hulu’s VP of comedy who’s “new to humor.

The single-camera comedy followed execs at Hulu who decide to reboot a family comedy from the 2000s. Actors from the original return to reprise their roles for the reboot, and “deal with their unresolved issues in today’s fast-changing world,” according to the original logline.

“This is no joke. This is catering!” so says Jane Lynch in the short trailer announcing the triumphant return of cult comedy “Party Down.”
The Rob Thomas and Paul Rudd-created cater-waiter comedy, which originally aired for two seasons on Starz beginning in 2009, is serving up (<—see what I did there?) six episodes on the network beginning February 24. If you’ve been hearing people talk about this show for a decade and want to catch up, the 20 beloved episodes are on the Starz app, as well as Hulu. (The first season is on Prime Video.)
Adam Scott is back as the failed actor stuck wearing bowties and attending other people’s parties. In addition to he and Lynch, other original cast members returning include Ken Marino, Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen and Megan Mullally. Alas, Lizzy Caplan will not appear in the third season (but her character is referenced).

The Party Down gang is back for seconds in the first full trailer teasing the Starz comedy’s long-awaited return.
In the footage released Thursday ahead of the Feb. 24 launch, Adam Scott reprises his role as actor-bartender Henry Pollard, who finds himself unexpectedly reuniting a decade later with his former co-workers from the Party Down catering team. The series, which has built a cult following, concluded its original two-season run in June 2010.
“This is not how I envisioned my 40s,” Scott tells a fellow member of the crew in the trailer.
During a different moment, a frazzled Constance Carmell (Jane Lynch) exclaims while at an event, “This is no joke. This is catering!”
Also returning from the original cast alongside Scott and Lynch are Ken Marino, Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen and Megan Mullally. Lizzy Caplan will not return due to scheduling conflicts.
New to the cast for the six-episode third season are Jennifer Garner,...

If you have an event coming up that requires a top-notch catering service, you should call someone other than Party Down. While the gang at Party Down knows how to make a celebration enjoyable, they’re likely to cause chaos behind the scenes, resulting in shenanigans that could be hard to explain to your guests. Starz is ready to start the party today with a new Party Down revival trailer. The party begins on Friday, February 24, on the Starz app and other streaming platforms. The revival also leads a conga line to Starz for a linear debut on Friday, February 24, at 9 Pm Et/Pt.
The Party Down revival trailer is getting us pumped for six all-new episodes that take place ten years after the original series. Several Party Down catering crew members have moved on since the original series, but a mutual event unites them, and the band gets back together.

In the age of revival television, it is still genuinely hard to believe that Starz is bringing the cult comedy favorite "Party Down" back for a long (long!) awaited third season, but it is indeed happening. As evidence of that, we have a brand new trailer for the new batch of episodes, which will be arriving via the premium cable channel next month. And yes, most of the original cast is back! Sadly, Lizzy Caplan isn't here as Casey Klein for another round of "will they, won't they" with Adam Scott's Henry Pollard. Be that as it may, it very much looks like the show folks like myself fell in love with. And in the third season...
