‘Breeder’ Review: Murky Mad-Scientist Mayhem From Denmark
Image
A Frankensteinian mashup of sci-fi and torture-porn horror tropes, . While there are vague pretensions toward seriousness in Sissel Dalsgaard Thomsen’s screenplay and Jens Dahl’s direction, this thriller ends up discomfitingly most reminiscent of 1970s Wip (women in prison) and Nazisploitation grindhouse fare, as well as gamy mainstream serial-killer potboilers like “Kiss the Girls.” Well-made but more than a bit ick, it’s being released to stateside digital formats by Uncork’d Entertainment on Jan. 11.

Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen) is an equestrian training for the Olympics. She seems more comfortable in the company of her horse than husband Thomas (Anders Heinrichsen), though the complexities of their relationship (including apparent separate sexual peccadilloes) never get more than hinted at. In any case, such nuances soon prove irrelevant when circumstances fatefully entangle his home and work life.

He’s employed as financial chief for a shadowy project by one Dr. Isabel Ruben...

Crown Princess Mary Says a Tarot Card Reader Predicted Her Royal Future
For Princess Mary, a royal romance was in the cards.

Before she met Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the then 28-year-old Australian advertising executive named Mary Donaldson found herself exploring a local flea market.

When she came across a tarot card reader, she decided to give it a try. The fortune teller carefully placed the cards, whose origins date back to mid-15th century Europe, in the traditional pattern on her table, and began turning them over.

The soothsayer told Donaldson that she would leave the workplace where she’d recently been employed to meet a man from abroad.

Review: Deliver Us From Evil
Film-maker, Ole Bornedal's (Nightwatch, Just Another Love Story) disturbing tale “begins in the sticks [where] the road only leads backwards and forwards” in “a snug haven for smug people”. A female narrator walks towards the camera introducing the lead characters in the small town Deliver Us From Evil is set.

All appears hunky-dory as we meet Bornedal's cast in Amelie style character intros, until we're told “Anna is an angel but her heart is too big – Anna is going to die soon”. The children's innocent questioning of their mother (“Is it Ok to hit evil people?”) is another subtle indication the mood will soon change.

After learning of Anna's imminent fate, Lars' (Jens Andersen) first appearance leaves us second-guessing how he might be involved as we watch him drunkenly driving a truck; miserably thinking about his now pregnant girlfriend, Scarlett (Pernille Vallentin). Our helpful narrator reaffirms he's unbalanced (“Tired of...

DVD Review: ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ Offers Danish Take on ‘Straw Dogs’
Chicago – Ole Bornedal’s “Deliver Us From Evil” is a superb B-movie that occasionally threatens to become something more substantial. It has the misfortune of being saddled with one of the most overused titles of recent years, though I am certain no one will be confusing it with Amy Berg’s brutal yet vital 2006 documentary on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Bornedal’s film is brutally dark yet also darkly humorous.

From the very first fade-in to the last droll frame, the picture is awash in the desaturated colors and harshly lensed grime that are commonplace in Danish cinema, which seems to perpetually exist beneath a dark cloud. An oddly inviting narrator sets up the action in deceptively peaceful western Jutland, while hinting at its more malicious undertones. There’s a memorable early moment when devoted mother Pernille (Lene Nystrøm) attempts to teach her children that there are no evil people,...

Fantasia 2010: Deliver Us From Evil Review
[Yes, it is 'Straw Dogs with a nail gun', and yes you should see it at Fantasia!  Here is Todd's mighty positive take on the film from the archives to beat the bushes and get you fine folks excited again.]

It was supposed to be a return to a simpler life for Johannes and Pernille, a move away from the big city and back to the small town for the high powered lawyer and his young family.  It should be perfect: A home to shape and rebuild with their own hands, lots of space for the kids, a slower pace of life.  Perfect.  But life doesn't always work out as we plan and things move into a dark and violent place in this harrowing thriller from Ole Bornedal - a director who must now surely be ranked among the very best Europe has to offer.

The one obvious flaw in Johannes' plan to return home comes in the form of Lars - his drunken, lascivious brother who makes eyes at Johannes' wife Pernille all the while smacking his own pregnant girlfriend around.  And, yes, Lars is ultimately the cause of...
