Locarno: ‘Ray &; Liz,’ ‘Family Tour,’ ‘Too Late’ Make Early Industry Running
Locarno, Switzerland — Brit Richard Billingham’s “Ray & Liz,” “A Family Tour,” from Chinese exile Ying Liang, Chilean Dominga Sotomayor’s “Too Late to Die Young” made some of the very early running in main competition at the 71st Locarno Festival, which saw a slew of negotiations kick off, and some deals go down, at its packed Industry Days which wrapped Monday.

The films world premiered at Europe’s biggest mid-summer film meet as Meg Ryan, Antoine Fuqua, Ethan Hawke and France’s Bruno Dumont rolled into town. Ryan talked of her new career as a director, producer, announcing a new project, half-hour comedy “The Obsolescents”: Fuqua, at Locarno for “The Equaliser 2,” talked intelligently about how to empower black filmmakers in Hollywood; Hawke, here to present “Blaze,” will receive the 2018 Excellence Award; Dumont, world premiering feature/series “Coincoin and the Extra Humans,” maybe the best received of Piazza Grande offerings to date,...

Eeff 2013: 'Beyond the Grave' review
★☆☆☆☆ Regurgitating elements of both the horror and western genres into a hideous example of grindhouse gone wrong, Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro's Beyond the Grave (2010) is an abysmal post-apocalyptic revenge thriller. In a desolate dystopia ravaged by some unspecified disaster, a merciless former-police officer (Rafael Tombini) is searching for a possessed killer. In a world where black magic dictates the tempo of everyday life and zombies roam freely like disoriented pedestrians, this is a road trip through the eerily deserted boondocks of Hell - where deliverance from evil is a wishful delusion.

As he embarks on his 'life or death' mission to find this supernatural serial killer, Tombini runs into violent cowboys, a sword-wielding assassin, two lost teenagers and a former blind colleague now infected and motivated merely by the taste of human flesh. Amalgamating choice cuts from Tarantino's oeuvre, Jodorowsky's El Topo (1970) and even Stephen King's The Stand,...

Wide World of Horror: ‘Porto dos Mortos (Beyond the Grave’)
Porto dos Mortos (Beyond The Grave)

Written by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro

Directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro

Brazil, 2010

There’s a fundamental problem with a film that eschews internal coherency for existential pondering. Such is the state of affairs with Porto dos Mortos, a 2010 Brazilian horror effort. The film starts off yearning to be existentially important and finishes hoping that it has proven that it is an existentially great film. Most cinephiles will tell you that the existentially great films are great not because of their willingness to be existential but because of their willingness to simply be. It’s not a highfalutin concept mind you, it’s the simple matter of a movie being as true to itself as it possibly can be. Yearning to be accepted as existential flies in the face of a film being true to itself. Porto dos Mortos feels and plays as false...

Review: Beyond the Grave
Beyond The Grave

Stars: Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa, Ricardo Seffner, Amanda Lerias, Luciana Verch, Leandro Lefa, Tatiana Paganella, Adriano Basegio | Written and Directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro

“In a devastated post-apocalyptic world where the rules of reality are transformed by magic and madness, a vengeful police officer searches for a possessed serial killer in a battle of the not-so-good versus absolute evil”

Films that feature zombies can be quite interesting, they tend to have different styles based on which part of the world they are based in. Beyond the Grave is a zombie film originating in Brazil and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro and he creates a film where zombies are in ways nothing more than a background menace to the main plot, which itself is more interesting than the average story of the undead.

The main character of the piece is only known as the police officer,...

2012 Spooky Movie Film Festival: Official Lineup
For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!

Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.

A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

2012 B-movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival: Official Lineup
The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.

The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.

Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

Searching for Demons in Beyond the Grave: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro.

Director/writer: Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro.

Cast: Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa and Ricardo Seffner.

Portos dos Mortos or Beyond the Grave is currently making the rounds on the film festival circuits in North America. A more accurate translation of the Portuegese title is Portals of the Dead and this film is from Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro. Pinheiro has developed a suitable action thriller here set in a zombie apocalypse. The desolate locales and makeup effects highlight the apocalypse, while a western genred film tries to develop in the character's dress and armaments. The characters are what made this film interesting to one reviewer and fans of indie zombie fiction should seek this film out.

Actor Rafael Tombini is a police officer who is seeking out an elusive demon. This supernatural being can...

Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.

David Lynch in short film ‘The Soul Detective’
V2 Cinema has released a new short film called ‘The Soul Detective’ that features cult director David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Dr.) in a guest star role. We have embedded the video below for you, along with a selection of Hi-res promo photos.

David Lynch Meets The Soul Detective
Well, this is an odd little beast. Brazil’s Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro recently completed a short film titled The Soul Detective, a film that stars none other than iconic American director David Lynch as himself. The ten minute short is the final entry in a web series called simply The Think Tank, an interview series with a variety of film makers but doing a straight up talking-head piece just wouldn’t suit either Pinheiro or Lynch, and so they’ve come up with something entirely different - a short that uses Lynch’s words as the launching point for a surreal, stream of consciousness fiction.

A detective enters a train car were he finds different manifestations of a force that haunts the place. Using his telepathic powers he tries to enter the mind of a recently deceased man before all his memories vanish.

Watch The Soul Detective starring David Lynch
The Soul Detective is the fifth and last episode from Brazilian web series Boundaries of Thought: Think Tank. It was written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro, whose post-apocalyptic thriller Beyond the Grave we're very much looking forward to. Concerning a murder, a train car, supernatural forces and a detective in a classic black and white 60s cut mod suit, the short is very reminiscent of the general vibe of Twin Peaks which is perhaps why I'm not totally surprised to see David Lynch make an appearance.

Written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who's also producing with Letícia de Cássia), the film follows a psychic investigation inside the mind of a recently deceased man, before all his memories vanish. The Soul Detective is the fifth and last episode from Brazilian web series Boundaries of Thought: Think Tank . Together, the five shorts show 54 minutes of footage on-line. A conversation with the director of Mulholland Drive was only the beginning of the creative process of The Soul Detective . In this forsaken landscape, Lockheart will join forces with a group of survivors and face his demonic nemesis and the rage of the “returners” who inhabited the world. “This is not a zombie or serial killer film, but a reaction to the recent production as well as to my own preconceptions of what the movie should be. Brazil Goes Beyond The Grave!
We’ve been tracking the progress of Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Brazilian zombie picture Beyond the Grave for a good while now, and why not? When you’ve got the same effects crew doing your make up as handled the latest from the legendary Coffin Joe and are citing the likes of Jodorowsky and Sergio Leone as key visual influences there is lots of reason for hope. Well, the full trailer for the film has just arrived and while it definitely shows it’s budget limits a little bit this thing looks like some bloodily impressive stuff. Not content to do ‘just another zombie movie’ Pinheiro builds his film around a cop tracking a serial killer in a world that just happens to be in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Along with that cool bit of info, he sent over four new pics from the film as well. “This is not a zombie or serial killer film,” Pinheiro says, ”but a reaction to the recent production as well as to my own preconceptions of what the movie should be. It’s a violent and emotional experience, mixing possession,...
