Revisiting the Satanic Panic craze is going to be a limited affair for Peacock, news that will surely disappoint many fans of Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell.

Per Variety, Peacock has canceled Hysteria! after just one season. The series premiered on Peacock in October after it was ordered to series in 2022 with production happening in 2023. Notably, Hysteria! has high acclaim with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so the show getting canceled is clearly not due to a lack of quality. While viewership numbers for Hysteria! have not been revealed by the streaming platform, it's likely that the show didn't perform strongly enough on Peacock to warrant a renewal. The series never cracked Nielsen's weekly Top 10 streaming charts.

Released in the midst of spooky season, Peacocks Hysteria! dropped all of its eight episodes on the platform simultaneously, which means viewers didnt have to wait for the shows finale. Set during the height of the Satanic panic that seemingly swept America in the 1980s, the show follows the residents of Happy Hollow as their fears of the occult and Satanic influences evoke mass hysteria in their quaint little town. At the heart of the series is a heavy metal band who propel themselves to relevance in the wake of the ritualistic murder of the towns beloved varsity quarterback, Ryan (Brandon Butler).

However, unbeknownst to nearly everyone in Happy Hollow, Ryans death was actually the result of an asthma attack. It was merely staged to look like a ritualistic killing to cover up the truth as to why he was kidnapped alongside Faith (Nikki Hahn) and...

Peacock's Hysteria! explores real-life fears alongside supernatural terrors, leaving audiences guessing what is and isn't real. But that was the goal of creator and showrunner Matthew Scott Kane and producer David A. Goodman, who melded their talents to develop a TV show which is equal parts nostalgic and modern. What happens in this small town will appeal to horror fans both old and new.

Cbr sat down with Kane and Goodman to explore if they had any personal experiences with the Satanic Panic that helped form the idea for Hysteria! and how they feel it never really left. The producers discuss the many influences that helped make Hysteria! feel familiar, even though the show has a unique idea that hasn't been seen before. How did they break new ground utilizing infamous history?

Set in the 1980s, showrunner Matthew Scott Kanes tale revolves around the residents of a small town braving the Satanic Panic. Led by a solid ensemble cast featuring Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Nikki Hahn (Adventures in Babysitting), and others, the series packs in plenty of mystery, fright, and a gaggle of absurdity along the way, of which, Campbell noted:

Filmed in Atlanta, it follows four Black men who met in grade school and have been best friends ever since. And they all just happen to have the same last name of Johnson but are not related. After 25 years of friendship, they are finding themselves in vastly different places in their lives, threatening the unity that has always been so strong. They confront and find humor in the most current controversial social issues from the Black man’s perspective, ranging from love and marriage to business, politics and religion.

Series creator Deji Laray stars along with Thomas Q. Jones, Philip A. Smithey and Derrex Brady. The cast also includes D.L. Hughley, Rosa Acosta, Chloe James, James Austin Kerr and Jessica Luza.

V/H/S: Viral has recently debuted at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. So, a few reviews are beginning to spill out, from the film's festival run and they are mostly positive. This horror anthology, which includes three unique stories and a wraparound, has a Red Band trailer available for fans. The clip shows a preview of each of the stories, which include encounters with the undead, a body swap and some magic. Some of these elements can be seen in the official trailer, below. Magnet Releasing has released a bloody insane red-band trailer for V/H/S: Viral, which is the third film in the V/H/S horror anthology series. This has been such a fun horror franchise that I've enjoyed watching every year when Halloween rolls around. This trailer is definitely Nsfw, there's some pretty jacked up shit in it, but it looks like an awesome addition to the horror franchise!

Say what you want about the first V/H/S film, I happen to enjoy it. However, I will defend V/H/S/2 to the death. What a great anthology that was. Dark, creepy, gory and inventive, V/H/S/2 does what any good sequel would. Take what made the first film effective, and make it even more so. I personally haven’t watched this red band trailer for the new sequel, V/H/S: Viral, because I don’t want a single second of this film spoiled for me. If you’re braver than I, though, here it is, for your viewing pleasure. V/H/S: Viral will be available on VOD on the 23rd of October. A limited theatrical engagement will follow, beginning on November 21st.
