After a milestone year in 2024 that saw France solidify its status as Europe’s healthiest theatrical market, the country’s box office dipped 10% during the first half of 2025 in the absence of a massive success.
At the midpoint of this year, no movie has passed 5 million theatrical admissions in France, with overall admissions falling to 76 million tickets (an estimated gross of €542 million). Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” has performed the best with 4.7 million tickets sold, followed by “God Save the Tuche” — the third opus of Pathé’s mainstream comedy — with 3 million tickets and Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” with 2.6 million tickets, according to Comscore France.
It’s a stark contrast to 2024, when a duo of local language hits — “A Little Something Extra,” a comedy with a cast of disabled non-professionals, and Alexandre Dumas adaptation “The Count of Monte Cristo” — beat Disney’s “Inside Out” with 10 million and 9 million admissions,...

The best movies about cooking have some familiar tropes. The food has to look delicious, the cooking meticulous and artistic, capturing the craft and the dedication. Yet many shows and movies about cooking are also about how the art of cooking is hell, and everyone who works in a kitchen goes through trenches night after night, with enough stress to destroy just about anyone. It's part of what makes the best episodes of "The Bear" so compelling, along with the family drama, funny moments, and enough nail-bitingly stressful situations to eliminate any hunger that could come up from watching the delicious food in the show.
Whether you're savoring every new episode of "The Bear" for as long as you can or binge-watching it as quick as possible, eventually you'll go through kitchen drama withdrawal, and that's when you need to watch the best new AppleTV+ show of the year: "Carême.

The air in the opening frames of 13 Days 13 Nights is thick with dust and desperation, choked with the sound of distant gunfire and the rising panic of a populace realizing it has been abandoned. It is August 2021 in Kabul, and the city is a portrait of collapse. Director Martin Bourboulon wastes no time on preamble, dropping us directly into the frantic energy of a nation on the verge of disappearing.
This is not a distant historical account; it is a thriller with the chilling immediacy of a news bulletin, where the abstract language of geopolitics becomes the terrifying reality of a locked gate and a ticking clock. At the center of this storm is the French embassy, a suddenly fragile island of sovereignty and the last Western outpost still operating.
Inside is Mohamed ‘Mo’ Bida, a police commander just weeks from a quiet retirement that has now become an impossibly distant fantasy.

Exclusive: French mini-major Pathé sent shockwaves through the UK cinema industry in 2023 when it emerged it was pulling out of film distribution and production in the country to focus uniquely on scripted TV series in the territory.
The move coincided with the retirement of longtime Pathé UK cinema-focused head Cameron McCracken and left Faith Penhale in charge as managing director of the refocused TV development and production subsidiary.
The development of English-language projects was shifted over to the Pathé HQ in Paris.
The French studio’s retreat from UK cinema was regarded as the end of an era. Pathé UK had left its mark on the local and international cinema landscape, having supported titles such as Slumdog Mllionaire, The Queen, The Iron Lady, Philomena and The Great Escaper, to name a few.

Apple TV+’s French-language historical drama Carême recently premiered on the streaming platform with actor Benjamin Voisin portraying the titular character. Inspired by author Ian Kelly’s book, Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, the Apple TV+ show is directed by Martin Bourboulon.
The show comes as a surprise entry for viewers who might have never thought about how the fine art of patisserie influences the political arena. Carême recounts the life and career of Marie-Antoine Carême, who rose from humble beginnings to be known as the world’s first celebrity chef in the Napoleonic era. Viewers have been curious about how much of Carême’s story is true.

Apple TV+ has released another binge-watchable show, Carême, this time in the French language. Based on the book Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, the show’s story explores a fictionalized version of historical chef Antonin Carême.
Benjamin Voisin plays the expert baker who hesitantly becomes part of Napoleon’s consulate as a spy. He initially turns down the job at Tulleries. However, Napoleon holds his father captive, and he seeks help from the nobleman Talleyrand, who has revolutionary tendencies.
Martin Bourboulon’s series is a visual treat, however, it fails to go all the way to become the promised groundbreaking period drama. Food and s*x are the driving force behind this show. When all of that is presented in a visually appealing manner, a show lacking real substance can easily earn a spot on many people’s must-watch lists without much effort.

Apple TV+’s Carême introduces Antonin Carême as the world’s first culinary celebrity, tracing his rise from a modest Parisian pâtissier to the favored cook of Europe’s most powerful figures. Benjamin Voisin embodies this ambitious artisan, whose sweet confections and savory creations double as tools of influence within dusty salons and gilded courts.
Set against the aftermath of the French Revolution, the series unfolds during Napoleon’s transformation from first consul to emperor. Coal-lit kitchens and candlelit banquets come alive under the watchful eyes of political schemers—Joseph Fouché’s steely glare and Talleyrand’s suave counsel shape Carême’s journey at every turn. In its eight episodes, the show charts how a simple pastry can carry coded messages into drawing rooms where crowns hang in the balance.
Visually, Carême feels exquisitely tailored: ornate backdrops evoke the brittle elegance of 18th-century France, while costumes blend polished regency flair with subtle modern touches.

The world’s first celebrity chef, Marie-Antoine Carême, came to prominence in the Napoleonic era. But the makers of Apple TV+ series “Carême” turned to other great men for inspiration.
“We spent hours looking at photos of Lenny Kravitz and Mick Jagger,” says star Benjamin Voisin.
“With costume designer Pierre-Jean Larroque, we thought it would be great to bring that sexy, liberated feeling to his outfits, to bring rock’n’roll. What could be more beautiful from making a period series yet talking about people who could live today?”
Director Martin Bourboulon – previously behind “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” and “The Three Musketeers: Milady” – also looked for a modern twist to the story.
“I wanted to avoid the usual ‘period drama style’ and give Carême this sexy, rock’n’roll attitude, which Benjamin also has in real life. It doesn’t matter if the costumes aren’t always [historically] accurate – it was...

While Hollywood has been exploiting comic books and YA novels as intellectual property for a long time, French cinema has only recently begun to feed its wealth of 19th century novels into the content machine, churning big-budget epics out of classic books in the public domain.
Last year, a two-part version of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers hit local screens, raking in $45 million off a combined $80 million budget for both films. Directed by Martin Bourboulon and featuring a who’s who of Gallic stars, including Vincent Cassel, Eva Green, Romain Duris and Louis Garrel, the Musketeers movies were marked by nonstop action and relentless storytelling tailor-made for the streaming age.
Both films were written by the duo of Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, who previously helmed a series of hit comedies (Daddy or Mommy, Divorce French Style, What’s in a Name?) with a fast-paced Hollywood edge to them.

French producer Dimitri Rassam is enjoying a high-profile Cannes Film Festival as producer of Competition title Limonov: The Ballad and The Count Of Monte Cristo, which scored a rousing 12-minute ovation at its Out of Competition debut.
“It’s my first film in Competition, it has been a tremendous ride,” says Rassam, who is a producer on Limonov under his Paris-based Chapter 2 banner, alongside Italy’s Lorenzo Gangarossa and Mario Gianani as well as director Kirill Serebrennikov’s long-time collaborator Ilya Stewart.
Rassam is no stranger to the Cannes red carpet having regularly accompanied his actress mother Carole Bouquet in his early 20s, before mounting the festival’s famed steps in his own right as the producer of The Little Prince and co-producer of L’Immensità.
Cinema is also in his blood on his paternal side through late producer father Jean-Pierre Rassam, and uncle Paul Rassam, the long-time friend and collaborator...

Last summer, Paul Schrader was about to start shooting “Oh, Canada,” his adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel about a troubled artist taking stock of his life, when the major actors union went on strike. For a second, it looked like all that hard work, passion and planning might be for nothing — with performers on the picket lines and major studios holding out on their contract demands, it was hard to see how cameras would ever roll on the low-budget indie.
“Everything shut down,” said Brian Beckmann, the CFO and COO of Arclight Films, which is selling international rights to the film. “We were in this position where we had spent all this money and secured all this talent and we weren’t sure we could move forward until the strikes were over.”
Because it was made outside the studio system, “Oh, Canada” was able to get a union waiver and...

With Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, the first part of Martin Bourboulon’s adaptation of Alexander Dumas’ classic novel, hitting all the right notes, it was expected that the second half of the epic saga was going to be as exciting as the first one.
