‘Only Murders In The Building’ EP Talks Season 3, Mystery Behind New Murder & Chevy Chase
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the Season 3 finale of Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building.

And thus ends another chapter of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building with a killer reveal and a fresh new murder mystery yet to unravel. Season 3 is currently available to stream in its entirety via the streamer.

The big mystery as to who killed Ben Gilroy (Paul Rudd) was resolved and it’s almost always the person you least expect—at least it was for me. I hardly paid any mind to this character and secretly wanted it to be the talented and mysterious Loretta Durkin the entire time out of pure selfishness so we could spend more time with Meryl Streep in Season 4.

Alas, Ben’s killer was none other than Cliff DeMeo (Wesley Taylor). Cliff and his mother Donna DeMeo (Linda Emond) co-produced Oliver’s (Martin Short) big Broadway return—you know,...

2023 WGA Awards: Full winners list in 23 categories
Image
Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Over on the small screen side of things, “Better Call Saul...

The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2022. Winners will be honored at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 5, 2023.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Releases Video for Steve Martin’s ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ Spoof Song
Image
Brazzos is back!

Steve Martin plays former ’80s star Charles Haden-Church, best known for playing Detective Brazzos in a TV cop procedural, during “Only Murders in the Building.” Now, the Hulu series released a tongue-in-cheek cartoon music video for Haden-Church’s fictional hit song, “Angel in Flip Flops.”

Featured in Episode 4 of the second season, Haden-Church (Martin) explains that he bonded with his ex-girlfriend’s daughter Lucy (Zoe Colletti) while singing the “pitta patta, pitta patta” chorus of his 1989 summer track. The “hit” song debuted at number 83 on the German music charts — right before the Berlin Wall fell.

“Angel in Flip Flops” is written by Martin and Kirker Butler and is produced by Paul Schaffer.

“I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good,” Martin, who is the co-creator and executive producer of “Only Murders,” joked in a press statement.

Pitta Putta! Steve Martin & ‘Only Murders In The Building’ Unveil Music Video & Single For ‘Angel In Flip Flops’
Image
“Angel in Flip Flops,” the fictional ’80s not-quite-a-hit single from Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, just got a real life music video and streaming single release.

“I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good,” said Steve Martin, the Only Murders co-creator, EP, and star whose character, Charles-Haden Savage, recorded and released the song back in ’89 only to see its German chart momentum halted along with communism.

In a statement announcing the new music video, Only Murders co-creator, showrunner and EP John Hoffman explains. “When the notion came up in our writers’ room of Charles-Haden Savage, at the height of his success with his original ‘Brazzos’ series, maybe having recorded an album that did really well in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell, we knew we had to talk further about it — immediately!.”

Steve Martin’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Song “Angel in Flip-Flops” Gets a Colorfully Trippy Music Video
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Steve Martin and Only Murders in the Building’s (’90s) summer anthem officially has its own music video.

“Angel in Flip-Flops,” performed by Martin and featured in the Emmy-nominated series, dropped across all digital streaming music platforms Friday. But now Hulu’s released a rather animated music video for the tune, which has its own cover art and was produced by Paul Shaffer and co-written by Martin and Only Murders executive producer Kirker Butler.

The original breezy and beachy song can be heard during the opening of the show’s latest episode, as Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage performs the track — which he recorded in the ’90s for his hit TV crime show Brazzos — in his kitchen.

In the show, the song is described by Charles’ stepdaughter Lucy (Zoe Colletti) as a big hit in Germany, where it went to No. 83 on the charts...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Actually Released That ‘Angel in Flip-Flops’ Song
Image
This week’s episode of the Emmy-nominated Only Murders in the Building introduced viewers to the brief (but profitable) music career of Steve Martin’s Charles Haden Savage, who — in the show — had a hit single with “Angel in Flip-Flops.” Now, that in-show gag has become an actual song with the release of the entire track.

As mentioned on Only Murders in the Building, “Angel in Flip-Flops” was a hit in Germany prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, but the single enjoyed a second life as sampling by like “50 rap stars,...

‘Coda,’ ‘Don’t Look Up,’ ‘Succession,’ ‘Hacks’ Win Big at 2022 WGA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.

On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.

But it ultimately did not matter, as two Oscar nominees took the top prizes. “Coda...

2022 WGA Awards: Full winners list in 23 categories
Image
Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?

“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. But if they both prevail, they will have bagged the two top industry prizes as they won at BAFTA last weekend right in the middle of final Oscar voting (it ends Tuesday).

Exclusive: CBS All Access is developing The Multivorce, an adult animated TV series created by Kirker Butler (Family Guy) and Scott Mosier (The Grinch), I have learned. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios.

Exclusive: WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streaming platform has opted not to proceed with Delilah, its half-hour comedy starring Jessica Rothe from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman.

Kirker Butler (Family Guy) was brought in to rewrite the project for the U.S.. Butler has a long relationship with Kaplan dating back to the writer being represented by Kaplan at Wma. (Horgan also is a former client of Kaplan.) Butler has worked on multiple Kapital series, including The Neighbors and Life In Pieces.

Rothe was approached about starring in the comedy, which landed at HBO Max in a competitive situation.

Mike Judge in King of the Hill (1997)
Comedy Central Acquires ‘King Of The Hill’ & ‘The Cleveland Show’
Mike Judge in King of the Hill (1997)
Comedy Central is adding animated series King of the Hill and The Cleveland Show to its lineup. The network has acquired from Twentieth Television all 13 seasons of King of the Hill for premiere on Monday, July 23 and all four seasons of Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show for premiere in the fall.

It was the off-network run of Family Guy on Adult Swim after its cancellation by Fox that triggered its revival by the broadcast network. We will see if Comedy Central’s airings could have a similar impact on spinoff The Cleveland Show, which has the rare distinction of never been officially canceled by Fox.

On Comedy Central, the two library series join another 20th TV-produced animated series that aired on Fox, Futurama, which also airs on Syfy.

King of the Hill originally aired on Fox from 1997 to 2010. Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, King of the Hill...

Marc’s Blu-ray Review Round-Up
Step Up 3

Let me start off this review by saying fairly that the film “Step Up 3″ is definitely not my cup of tea. But I don’t really think the movie is aimed towards myself, but rather people that are interested and participate in the human ritual of rhythmic motion known as dancing.

Here’s the story: Moose (Adam G. Sevani) & his lifelong best friend Camille (Alyson Stoner) have just started school at Nyu. Moose’s parents are saying goodbye & couldn’t be happier that their son has set aside his foolish desire to dance to instead focus on earning his Engineering degree. No sooner do his parents leave him be does Moose stumble onto an impromptu dance-off. Moose injects himself into the contest & his moves catch the eye of Luke (Rick Malambri), an amateur filmmaker & dancer who heads up The House of Pirates, a local dance squad...

'Cleveland Show' writer options baseball book
Kirker Butler
Kirker Butler, a co-executive producer and writer on Fox series "The Cleveland Show," has optioned movie rights to "Fifty-Nine in '84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had."

The historical biography, by Providence Journal columnist Ed Achorn, tracks the story of a little-known pitcher who set a season record of 59 wins that never will be broken.

The book is set in 1884, when baseball was in its infancy and looked down upon by much of the public, a time when pitchers threw balls at batters' heads and catchers played barehanded. The story centers on Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn and what he endured -- including pitching so much he couldn't lift his arm to comb his hair.

Butler said he's not a baseball buff, just a fan of good stories and good characters. He sparked to the rambunctious Radbourn, who among other achievements is purported...

Blu-ray review: Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side
I’ve always admired Family Guy for its humor, sure its dirty and sure its crude at times but everyone gets a good laugh at the series. As of late Seth MacFarlane has been making a series of Family Guy films based of the Star Wars trilogy, the first one was based off of A New Hope now he brings us the second installment Something Something, Something Dark Side which follows the line of Empire Strikes Back. Obviously most of you know the story of Empire Strikes Back, if you don’t well you should have watched it already. In short its basically the story of the second Star Wars with a nice touch of Family Guy, I just don’t want to spoil all the really funny bits they take from the film.

There are a few things that could of been better though, one would be that they...

Family Guy: Something Something Something Dark Side Blu-ray Review
As long as I keep in mind that Episodes I-iii don’t really exist, I’m quite the Star Wars fan. I was on the Family Guy wagon starting with its launch. I stayed with the show through a cancellation or two, only falling off my following of late. The minds behind Family Guy thought of the brilliant idea of combining the two Fox legacies with their parody of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope entitled Blue Harvest and Something Something Something Dark Side is their follow-up parody of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. More after the jump.

Much like the setup of Blue Harvest, Something Something Something Dark Side begins when the Griffith household loses power and Peter (the patriarch) must keep the family entertained. He does so through a cast-centric retelling of The Empire Strikes Back. The story of Empire unfolds with Peter (Seth MacFarlane) reprising his role of Han Solo,...

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside’
Chicago – It probably found its way under a few trees this Christmas, but if you have a gift card burning a hole in your wallet and are a fan of “Family Guy” without the latest straight-to-dvd release from Seth MacFarlane and his talented team then you should definitely use your holiday credit on the “Star Wars” (or, more specifically, “The Empire Strikes Back”) spoof “Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside”.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

The “Family Guy” team turned their love for “Star Wars” into the very clever and massively successful “Blue Harvest,” a surprisingly loyal spoof of George Lucas’ breakthrough masterpiece. Now they have returned to tackle the sequel, the beloved “The Empire Strikes Back,” arguably the best sci-fi film of all time.

Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 22nd, 2009.

DVD Review: Family Guy’s Something, Something, Something Dark Side (DVD)
The long awaited sequel to Family Guy’s first Star Wars parody, Blue Harvest, has finally arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. Something, Something Dark Side, is the crew’s hilarious redux of Empire Strikes Back. First off I must point out the show wastes no time in giving some kind of pop culture reference to insult or make you smile. While watching Aaron Sorkin’s new show “The Kitchen” featuring people walking and talking intelligently throughout a kitchen, The Griffin’s are struck with another power outage leaving Peter with one thing to do, tell the next story in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Assuming that the viewer is already familiar with the film’s plot, the opening crawl instead goes into detail about how 20th Century Fox made Star Wars unprofitable (foreseeing it a failure) to other companies by letting George Lucas keep all merchandising rights to it and...

Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side (DVD Review)
I love Family Guy. I love Star Wars. But for some reason, when you put the two together, the result is….something, something, something, mediocre.

I was underwhelmed by Blue Harvest, the Family Guy’s first effort to poke fun at George Lucas’ saga, and I feel the same way about Something, Something, Something, Dark Side—a 54-minute parody of The Empire Strikes Back. Empire is my favorite movie of all time, and it’s obvious that executive producer Seth MacFarlane, writer Kirker Butler, director Dominic Polcino (who also helmed Blue Harvest) and the Family Guy cast & crew love Star Wars: Episode V, too. If you watch Family Guy, you know that the show has made Star Wars references before and that these guys know that galaxy far, far away as well as anybody, but I think the problem with both Something and Blue Harvest is that they’re parodies.
