Shari Redstone Invokes Father Sumner Redstone’s ‘Steadfast Belief That Content Is King’ in Final Quarterly Earnings Call as Paramount Global Owner
Image
Shari Redstone invoked the legacy of her father Sumner Redstone in her farewell remarks as owner of Paramount Global on Thursday as the studio reported its second quarter earnings report, one week before the company is set to be acquired by Skydance Media and RedBird Capital.

“I believe I can take it on faith that many on this call understand the enormous importance of this business to my family and to me, beginning nearly 40 years ago, my father, Sumner Redstone, built Viacom and CBS by bringing together a group of the best assets in media, news and entertainment,” Redstone, chair of Paramount Global, said in what was a rare appearance for her on an earnings call.

“While people often debated whether content or distribution ruled the day, my father’s steadfast belief was that content was King, even against the backdrop of enormous change that core business philosophy remains the...

Peter Bart: Both ‘The Naked Gun’ And Its Studio Are Banking On The Promise Of Reboots
Image
The Naked Gun reboot arrives this week from Paramount Global, its distributor, which is also heralding its own massive reboot — a study in contrasts.

The three Naked Gun films over nearly 40 years hilariously chronicled a litany of organizational debacles, the last even subtitled “The Final Insult.” But in unveiling his $8 billion takeover, Skydance’s young CEO David Ellison has pledged his commitment to success – one apparently shared by the Trump administration in endorsing the mega-deal.

Within the Hollywood community itself there’s debate about the feasibility of “reinventing” a slumbrous studio, especially one attached to CBS, Comedy Central, MTV and other cable entities. Ellison himself, age 41, has promised enthusiastically that “technology will transform every aspect of this company.” It will be a “studio in the cloud,” one that leverages AI and other digital tools that generate content faster and cheaper.

In quietly assuming this role, Ellison has avoided emulating David Zaslav...

“Forever Grateful”: Shari Redstone Signs Off As Paramount’s Owner Ahead of Skydance Deal Close
Image
In the final earnings report of Paramount’s decades-long ownership under the Redstone family, non-executive chair Shari Redstone touted the turnaround that co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins have executed at the company, while thanking employees and shareholders during what has been a tumultuous period for the entire media sector.

On the company’s earnings call, Redstone delivered a farewell to the company that she helped put together from the assets her father Sumner Redstone originally acquired.

I” believe I can take it on faith that many on this call understand the enormous importance of this business to my family and to me,” Redstone said. “While it is never easy to step away, please know that it has been an honor for my family and for me, to serve as stewards of these assets for decades.”

Redstone also thanked the co-CEOs for taking on a “challenging job” over...

Paramount+ Revenue Up 23% in 2nd Quarter Despite Losing 1.3 Million Subscribers
Image
Ahead of Paramount’s merger with Skydance on Aug. 7, the company reported a solid quarter. Revenue increased 1% year-over-year while profits came in at $57 million.

One of the most interesting stories from this quarter had to do with Paramount’s Dtc offerings, which were up 15% overall. Streaming revenue growth outpaced linear declines during the quarter. The TV and Media segment saw a 6% decrease, hitting $4 billion, and affiliate and subscription revenue decreased 7% due to declines when it came to linear subscribers. However, the Dtc division generated $157 million in adjusted Obida (operating income before depreciation and amortization), a year-over-year improvement of $131 million.

Though revenue brought in by Paramount+ was up 23%, the streamer lost 1.3 million subscribers during the quarter. The disparity was because of pricing increases for the streamer as well as improvements in its churn rate. As for what caused that million-plus drop, that was due to the expiration of an international hard bundle deal.

Shari & Lamb Chop Review: Anatomy of an Unlikely Partnership
Image
The documentary “Shari & Lamb Chop” arrives as a portrait of an artist whose life was a study in relentless motion. It chronicles the story of the celebrated ventriloquist Shari Lewis, a figure of seemingly inexhaustible talent whose career spanned the defining decades of modern American entertainment.

The film charts a course through her creative origins, her initial television stardom, a period of professional displacement, and a final, triumphant return to the screen.

Through a rich collection of archival footage and contemporary interviews, the movie examines the singular, lifelong partnership between Lewis and her woollen counterpart, Lamb Chop. It tells the story of a pioneer whose dedication established a standard for children’s programming, leaving a permanent mark on the medium.

A Natural Talent, An Accidental Partner

The documentary presents Shari Lewis’s early life as a space where a career in performance was not so much chosen as it was inherited.

‘She dies with me’: Shari Lewis’ daughter talks Lamb Chop’s final act — including a new TV show and that song that will never end
Image
There's only one Shari Lewis — but there are two Lamb Chops. When the pioneering Emmy-winning television puppeteer died in 1998 at the age of 65, her daughter Mallory Lewis stepped in to take over her signature sheepish sock puppet character, who has been entertaining children and adults since the mid 1950s, when television was still a young medium. That literal hand-off from mother to daughter provides the emotional climax to Lisa D'Apolito's new documentary, Shari & Lamb Chop, opening in theaters on July 18. And it's the one moment in the film that the younger Lewis finds hard to watch.

As outlined in the documentary, Mallory was present for her mother's last-ever Lamb Chop performance, which took place on the set of the PBS children's show The Charlie Horse Music Pizza, just after Shari had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Footage from that day is included in the film, and Mallory recalls...

Trump Payout Just the Latest – and Most Blatant – Political Interference at FCC: ‘Sad That It’s Come to This’
Image
The controlling owner of Paramount Global, Shari Redstone, delivered a commencement speech at Boston University last year on the theme of “moral leadership.”

“Too many leaders are unwilling to take a stand, even when they know what is right,” she said. “To be a true moral leader, you must be willing to take a stand.”

A year later, Paramount settled with President Trump, agreeing to pay $16 million to end a lawsuit over a “60 Minutes” interview. At CBS – and in newsrooms around the country – the deal was seen as a shameful capitulation.

But among those who deal regularly with the Federal Communications Commission – and who are used to what they see as arbitrary power – the deal was largely seen as the price of doing business.

“On one hand, I’m quite disappointed,” says Jerald Fritz, a longtime FCC insider. “On the other hand, I get the business decision that Shari had to make.

Hearts Around the Table: Josh’s Third Serving Review: A Gentle Tale of Teachers and Teens
Image
“Hearts Around the Table: Josh’s Third Serving” continues a series built upon the comforting bedrock of a “found family,” a concept with deep resonance in collectivist cultures, reminiscent of the extended familial support networks often depicted in Indian cinema where community ties are paramount.

The narrative unfolds primarily within the corridors of East Heights High School, a setting that becomes a crucible for nascent relationships and professional aspirations. Here, we meet Josh Adler, a math teacher and lauded track coach, his life intertwined with Angie Hartman’s foster family.

His world encounters a gentle tremor with the arrival of Ella Hawthorne, a new English teacher fresh from Washington D.C., tasked with breathing life into the school’s music program. An initial, almost imperceptible spark ignites between them, a familiar trope in many romantic narratives globally.

However, their connection is immediately tested by the pragmatic realities of institutional life: looming...

Peter Bart: Barry Diller’s New Memoir Might Be The True Final Reckoning
Image
Studios celebrate their box office hits — unless it’s Paramount, where even success becomes opaque.

Tom Cruise’s $400 million Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was produced by Skydance Films for Paramount, but Skydance also wants to acquire Paramount, an ambition mired in layers of Trumpian and dynastic complexity. Indeed, the intrigues are reminiscent of those of Barry Diller, the onetime Paramount chief whose dealmaking forays ended in defeat, but then success.

Diller’s new memoir, titled Who Knew, details double-crosses and plot twists among Hollywood majors that could justify its rebranding as Who Cares.

Despite the success of Mission: Impossible, the Skydance morass may trigger a reversal for David Ellison and his billionaire father, Larry. It could further imperil the CBS network and the future of its revered 60 Minutes as well as redefine Donald Trump’s policy toward future mergers and acquisitions.

As I said, who cares? Except...

Hearts Around the Table: Shari’s Second Act Review: Painting a New Chapter, Softly
Image
“Hearts Around The Table: Shari’s Second Act” arrives as another installment in a series that, much like a well-loved family recipe, offers familiar comfort. The premise orbits a charmingly modern concept: a group of adult foster siblings, their bonds forged not by blood but by shared experience, gathering weekly around their foster mother’s table.

This particular story turns its lens on Shari Adams, a portrait artist whose life has just been through the emotional wringer of a divorce. She returns to Washington D.C., not just to lick her wounds, but to actively repaint her future. The film opens with her securing an artist’s residency – a literal and figurative new space.

It’s a classic setup for a tale of rebirth, placing Shari back into the embrace of her steadfastly supportive, if unconventional, family, a warm counterpoint to the uncertainties of her new beginning. I’m always drawn...

Has ’60 Minutes’ Run Out of Time? Shari Redstone’s Painful Predicament
Image
That ticking noise that begins every 60 Minutes segment? Turns out that’s not a stopwatch. It’s a time bomb.

At least that’s how it’s sounding lately, like the illustrious citadel of American broadcast journalism is on the brink of blowing up. Last night, in the latest shudder suggesting an imminent explosion, correspondent Scott Pelley ended the show with a “Last Minute” segment that all but declared open rebellion against 60 Minutes’ corporate overlords at Paramount and raised a fist in solidarity with longtime executive producer Bill Owens, who just days earlier had bolted CBS in protest over what he called editorial meddling by management.

“No one here is happy about it,” Pelley informed viewers, perched on a stool before a backdrop of the program’s iconic ticking timepiece. “But in resigning, Bill proved one thing — he was the right person to lead 60 Minutes all along.”

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Morgan is currently taping episodes at the show’s Television City studio that are slated to air later this spring as part of a guest arc.

Legal Troubles With Paramount and SkyDance's Merger May Hurt Star Trek's Future Worse Than Fans Think
Image
Quick LinksStar Trek Has Faced a Tumultuous Road Throughout Its HistoryParamount and Skydance Agreed to a Merger That Would Save the StudioStar Trek's Studio Is Also at War With the US Government and the FCC

Shortly before the first Star Trekseries was canceled on NBC, Paramount took ownership of the nascent universe along with the rest of Desilu Studios. A new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is imminent, and a new series called Starfleet Academy is reportedly gearing up for production on Season 2.However, the future of Star Trek hangs in the balance as legal woes threaten the merger between Paramount and Skydance Media that would save the studio. While a small group of less throughtful fans point fingers at shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, the universe created by Gene Roddenberry is holding its own in a crowded media landscape.

Novocaine
Image
“Meet Nathan Caine. He can’t feel pain.” As far as poster taglines go, that is an all-timer: neatly and succinctly boiling down a zany high concept into seven simple words. For yes, Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid) has congenital insensitivity to pain, a condition that comes in very handy when he inadvertently finds himself in an action-comedy film. In its outlandish premise tailor-made for wacky genre mishaps, it shares some ingredients with the nutty 2006 Jason Statham flick Crank — even if its execution is not quite as bold. (No falling out of a helicopter and surviving here.)

Novocaine’s Nathan is not dissimilar from Jack Quaid’s most famous role thus far, Hughie in The Boys: a bumbling, nerdy everyman, reluctantly thrust into a tough-guy world. When we meet him, he’s a kind-hearted credit union assistant manager, who mostly spends his spare time playing video games with the gamertag...

'Novocaine' Exclusive Poster Teases Jack Quaid Action Comedy in 4Dx
Image
In Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's new action comedy Novocaine, Jack Quaid stars mild-mannered introvert Nathan Caine, who must save his girlfriend after she's taken hostage in a bank robbery. It sounds like a simple premise, but when you add in the fact that Quaid has Cip (congenital insensitivity to pain), things get nuts in the new film, which is slated to be released on March 14 by Paramount Pictures.

A new poster for the movie was just released today (seen below), highlighting all the intense punishment Quaid goes through. Not only is he smashed up against a pane of broken glass, but his one hand is bruised and bloody, and the other looks like it has suffered a severe amount of damage, including a bit of flayed skin. In addition to Quaid, Novocaine also stars Amber Midthunder as his girlfriend Shari, as well as appearances by Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon,...

Paramount Global Battles Trump Politics and Investor Suits. Is the Sale to Skydance in Peril?
Image
In October, it will be 10 years since Shari Redstone began her campaign to get her family’s legacy in order. Most likely, she hasn’t had a day of rest in all that time.

As late as a month ago, Redstone, 70, might have reasonably expected that the sale of the family media empire, Paramount Global, would be done and dusted by the time she marked the 10-year anniversary of the day she had a former girlfriend ousted from the Beverly Park home of her aged father, legendary film and TV mogul Sumner Redstone. Shari’s move to wrest control of her father’s life away from rival contenders to his fortune and his throne set off an avalanche of litigation, corporate maneuvering, financial engineering, sharp-elbowed lawyering and boardroom dealmaking.

Slowly but surely, the younger Redstone vanquished powerful figures in her father’s orbit to take the reins of Paramount Global,...

Jesse Collins Entertainment & Concord Originals Prepping Biopic On Robert Johnson, King Of The Delta Blues
Image
Exclusive: Jesse Collins Entertainment and Concord Originals are partnering on a biopic of Robert Johnson, the influential musician nicknamed the King of the Delta Blues.

The project will mark the first authorized narrative feature on Johnson, a figure famous for his culture-defining influence on rock legends like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin. Ridgeway Wilson (Black Girls Rock!) is set to write the script.

Born in Mississippi in 1911, Johnson pursued his passion for music partly as a way to avoid the sharecropper lifestyle prescribed to him by the American South. He took the tortuous lifestyle that came with being a Black man in that time and place and transformed his personal experience into music of universal relevance and global reach. When he died at 27, allegedly murdered by the jealous boyfriend of a former lover, his few recordings debuted posthumously at Carnegie Hall. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,...

Paramount Global In Discussions With Donald Trump To Settle Lawsuit Over Kamala Harris’ ‘60 Minutes’ Interview — Update
Image
Updated with additional details, FCC commissioner comment: Paramount Global has been in detailed discussions with Donald Trump’s team about settling his lawsuit against CBS over the way a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was edited last year, we can confirm.

Any settlement would be a highly conciliatory gesture to Trump. He was not even part of the 60 Minutes piece, but he sued the network for $10 billion under Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which is generally aimed at false advertising.

But Paramount Global is seeking the greenlight for its sale to Skydance, something that requires the regulatory approval of the Trump administration. Brendan Carr, who Trump appointed to lead the FCC, has indicated that the 60 Minutes interview would be part of its review of the transaction. CBS News said today that it would comply with an FCC notice of inquiry to provide an unedited transcript and camera feeds of the interview.

“Everything is a dang ad…”: Taylor Sheridan Is Following Yellowstone’s Dangerous Pattern With ‘Landman’ and It Could Backfire
Image
Taylor Sheridan seems to have hit a bit of a rut following the Yellowstone fiasco. Fans pointed out significant flaws in his recent writing. Sheridan also faced backlash for his portrayal of Travis Wheatley, an extended cameo that fans didn’t ask for. Just like Yellowstone‘s largely forgettable finale, his latest series Landman drew criticism for its over-the-top and cringeworthy scenes.

Landman, which wrapped up its first season last Sunday, was also accused of borrowing heavily from Yellowstone. Several characters and story arcs felt like rehashes of Sheridan’s seminal Western drama.

One particular criticism of Landman was its excessive use of product placement. Fans aren’t happy with it as the later seasons of Yellowstone became notorious for shamelessly plugging various brands.

The product placements in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman are truly embarrassing...
