‘Mr Inbetween’ to finish after third season
Image
FX will not renew Mr Inbetween, confirming that the show’s upcoming third season will be its last.

Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith as he juggles his roles of father, ex-husband, boyfriend, and criminal for hire.

The character was first introduced in Ryan’s 2005 mockumentary The Magician.

Mr Inbetween is directed by The Magician editor and producer Nash Edgerton, and produced by Michele Bennett, who also produced the original film.

In what is to be the final season of the Blue-Tongue Films and Pariah Production series, Ray’s world has contracted.

Household life appears to be just a little totally different as he quietly mourns the lack of Bruce, whereas determining how you can take care of his growing old father, Invoice (Kenny Graham).

FX’s ‘Mr Inbetween’ Not Returning After Season 3
Image
Scott Ryan’s “Mr Inbetween,” which will premiere its third season on May 25 on FX, is ending with this upcoming season.

The half-hour series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, centers on Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith, a criminal for hire who collects debts, drugs and guns, and sometimes “takes care of people” in a permanent way as he juggles being a dad and taking care of an aging parent.

In the third season of “Mr Inbetween,” Ray will deal with the loss of Bruce, figure out how to care for his aging father Bill (Kenny Graham), and be faced with his daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura) possibly discovering who he really is. Ray is now working freelance and feeling isolated after severing ties with former boss and confidant Freddy (Damon Herriman), but with business booming, a new connection with kingpin Rafael (Jeremy Sims) compounds Ray’s problems.

‘Mr InBetween’ To End With Season 3 On FX; Premiere Date Set
Image
The upcoming third season will be the last for FX’s Mr Inbetween. FX has opted not to pick up a fourth season of the Australian drama series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton.

The nine-episode third season will premiere on Tuesday, May 25 at 10 pm Et/Pt on FX and be available to stream the following day on FX on Hulu. The premiere will include the first two episodes, with one new episode airing each subsequent week.

Mr Inbetween, inspired by Ryan’s 2005 cult film The Magician, centers on Ray Shoesmith (Ryan), a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder when you’re a criminal for hire.

In season three, Ray’s world has contracted. Family life looks a little different as he quietly mourns the loss of Bruce, while figuring out how to care for his aging father,...

‘Mr Inbetween’ to End With Season 3 on FX
Scott Ryan in Mr Inbetween (2018)
Australian drama “Mr Inbetween” will end with its upcoming third season on FX, the cable channel announced Thursday.

The half-hour series — created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton — will premiere its nine-episode final season on May 25 at 10/9c, with the first two episodes airing back to back. One new episode will air each subsequent week.

“Mr Inbetween” stars Ray Shoesmith (Ryan) as someone who “takes care of people” — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis, per FX. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate others disregarding his very clear code of ethics. As Ray’s increasingly volatile work collides with his imploding personal life, he finds himself struggling to stay atop the complex web he has woven.

Here’s the official description for the show’s third and final season:

Eliza Scanlen in Babyteeth (2019)
Another New UK Trailer for Shannon Murphy's Acclaimed 'Babyteeth'
Eliza Scanlen in Babyteeth (2019)
"I don't want to hurt you." "So don't." Picturehouse Cinemas in the UK has debuted their own official trailer for Babyteeth, which is finally opening in the UK coming up in August. The film is already available on VOD in the US as of a few months ago. We've posted the original Australian trailer, then the US trailer, and now here's the UK trailer - and it might be the best of the bunch. This Australian bittersweet comedy, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, follows a married couple who discover their terminally ill teenage daughter has fallen in love with a kooky small time drug dealer. Eliza Scanlen stars with Toby Wallace (he won the "Best Young Actor" award), along with Emily Barclay, Eugene Gilfedder, plus Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn as her parents. I also interviewed director Shannon Murphy earlier in June - she's a superbly talented filmmaker.

Baby Done (2020)
Rose Matafeo & Matthew Lewis in Baby Comedy 'Baby Done' Trailer
Baby Done (2020)
"Aren't you ever tired of just being so responsible?" Madman Films from Australia has just released the first official Australian trailer for Baby Done, a fun coming-of-baby comedy made by New Zealand filmmaker Curtis Vowell. It is also executive produced by none other than Taika Waititi! Supporting his own New Zealanders. Wannabe-adventurer Zoe freaks out when she falls pregnant with her long-term boyfriend Tim. As Tim embraces the prospect of fatherhood, Zoe attempts to rush through her dreams. "Growing a baby doesn't mean growing up." Ha. Starring Rose Matafeo and Matthew Lewis as Zoe and Tim, along with Rachel House, Emily Barclay, and Ryan O'Kane. It's cool to see this twist about a woman who doesn't really want a baby dealing with pregnancy, but the humor seems just as bad as so many other dull comedies. Here's the official Australian trailer (+ poster) for Curtis Vowell's Baby Done, from Madman's...

Babyteeth – Review
Image
Okay, enough with the somber serious stuff, we’re finally getting into some real Summer cinema subject matter. No, it’s not a big bombastic superhero epic, nor an action thriller, or even a raunchy slapstick comedy. This one’s a story of young people in love, and though it’s based on a play it does incorporate several themes from movies based on Ya or Young Adult novels. There’s the impending disease doom of The Fault In Our Stars and Five Feet Apart and the opposites attract vibe of The Spectacular Now. But unlike many “Ya-based” films, the parents (one set at least) pretty much get major “screen time”. Oh, and then there’s the setting: the suburbs of Australia (and a lot of cities like New South Wales and Sydney). Combine all those elements and you get the sweet and sour “dramedy” dish called Babyteeth.

It all starts at a commuter platform,...

Reminder: Babyteeth Coming Soon, Like, Tomorrow
Image
I feel like a kid in school again whenever I watch the trailer for Babyteeth, which will be available in select theaters and a large selection of digital and cable platforms as of tomorrow, aka Friday, aka June 19, 2020. Directed by Shannon Murphy, the Australian film stars Eliza Scanlen, Toby Wallace, Emily Barclay, Eugene Gilfedde, Essie Davis, and Ben Mendelsohn. We've written about the film before, and the trailer is below, but as a further reminder, here's the official synopsis: "When seriously ill teenager Milla (Eliza Scanlen) falls madly in love with small-time drug dealer Moses (Toby Wallace), it's her parents' (Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn) worst nightmare. But as Milla's first brush with love brings her a renewed lust for life, traditional morals...

Eliza Scanlen in Babyteeth (2019)
“Babyteeth” Finds Heart And Quirk In A Tragic Situation
Eliza Scanlen in Babyteeth (2019)
There’s a version of Babyteeth that could have been made which would have overplayed the quirk and cuteness factor. Luckily, no one involved in this movie is looking to do that. There are times where that method is needed, but here, it’s all about the heart of the matter. Babyteeth has a ton of ambition, keeps you on your toes, and showcases again that not only is Ben Mendelsohn a deeply underrated actor, but that Eliza Scanlan is one of our more exciting up and coming actresses. Despite a few hiccups along the way, everyone involved makes this work something that truly stands out. Come Friday, when it release, you’ll understand why. The film is a dramedy, centered on Milla (Scanlan) a seriously ill teenager. When she meets and falls in love with drug dealer and all-around troubled Moses (Toby Wallace), it’s as equally what she...

David Wenham cast in Netflix thriller with Toni Collette, Bella Heathcote
Image
David Wenham.

David Wenham was set to fly to Vancouver to star in the Netflix drama series Pieces of Her when the producers were forced to shut down production on the day principal photography was due to start.

He was to have joined Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote in the eight-part thriller based on the 2018 crime novel by Karin Slaughter from the all-female creative team led by Charlotte Stoudt, Bruna Papandrea, Lesli Linka Glatter and Minkie Spiro.

Scripted by Stoudt and to be directed by Spiro, the series is set in a sleepy Georgia town where a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver (Heathcote) and her mother Laura (Collette), a speech therapist.

Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her toward the dark, hidden heart of her family.

In a webinar yesterday with Adam Cook, head...

Summer Movie Preview 2020: ‘Hamilton,’ ‘Tenet,’ ‘Mulan’ and More
Image
The 2020 summer movie season is one like never before. With social distancing and shelter-in-place regulations shutting down theaters across the world, the film industry is in uncharted waters. What was set up to be a season for studios to unleash expensive and highly anticipated tentpoles has been truncated and diminished by frequent calendar adjustments and looming uncertainty.

Many of the films that were poised to be the biggest hits of the summer have been pushed back. Marvel’s “Black Widow,” Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman 1984” have all staked out new release dates for later this year. Some movies, such as Universal’s “F9” and Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” have been delayed as far as 2021.

The shutdown has also led studios to experiment with digital and video-on-demand (VOD) releases for films that were originally scheduled to debut in theaters. “The King of Staten Island,” “Artemis Fowl...

Ben Mendelsohn & Eliza Scanlen in New Trailer for Superb 'Babyteeth'
Eliza Scanlen in Babyteeth (2019)
"You look like a different person! What have you done with my daughter?" IFC Films has debuted a new official Us trailer for the acclaimed indie film Babyteeth, marking the feature directorial debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Shannon Murphy. This originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, and earned rave reviews from critics (here's my review). This Australian bittersweet comedy, self-adapted from the play of the same name by Rita Kalnejais, follows a married couple who discover their seriously ill teenage daughter has fallen in love with a kooky small time drug dealer. Eliza Scanlen, who also appeared in Little Women last year, stars with Toby Wallace (he won the "Best Young Actor" award in Venice), plus Emily Barclay, Eugene Gilfedder, Essie Davis, and Ben Mendelsohn. I adore this film, it's seriously something special, and I hope people give it a look because it's a touching and heartwarming story of love.

Shannon Murphy’s ‘Babyteeth’ wows the critics in Venice
(L-r) Ben Mendelsohn, Eliza Scanlen, Shannon Murphy and Toby Wallace in Venice.

Shannon Murphy’s debut feature Babyteeth, a bittersweet comedy starring Ben Mendelsohn, Essie Davis, Eliza Scanlen and Toby Wallace, has been acclaimed by critics after its world premiere in official competition at the Venice International Film Festival.

Mendelsohn and Davis play a couple who discover their seriously ill teenage daughter Milla (Scanlen) has fallen in love with drug dealer Moses (Wallace). It’s her protective parents’ worst nightmare but Milla teaches those in her orbit how to live like there is nothing to lose.

Produced by Alex White and based on Rita Kalnejais’ play, it’s one of only two from female directors in Venice competition. However Murphy was not keen to address the gender issue, telling the media in Venice: “I think it’s a struggle to always have to answer questions about being a female filmmaker if I’m being honest.

The ABC’s ‘Diary of an Uber Driver’ marks a new chapter in Sam Cotton’s career
Sam Cotton in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’

When Sam Cotton landed the title role in the ABC/RevLover Films’ dramedy Diary of an Uber Driver, he approached the job with some trepidation.

It was his first lead after playing Bruce, the nemesis of Luke McGregor’s Daniel in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and son-in-law Wayne in Sbs’s The Family Law.

He plays Uber driver Ben, whose life had always been in cruise control until his newish girlfriend Beck (Zahra Newman) gets pregnant in the six-parter scripted by Tom Ward, based on Ben Phillips’ blog.

He got the gig after doing a self-tape when he lived in Brisbane (he is now based in Sydney), followed by a call back in Sydney a few weeks later.

“At the outset I was kind of terrified but the director Matt Moore did so much to make me comfortable,” he tells If. “He...

Thomas Ward enjoys the ride on the ABC’s ‘Diary of an Uber Driver’
Zahra Newman, Thomas Ward and Sam Cotton.

After Josh Thomas’ Please Like Me ended after four seasons on the ABC, his co-writer and co-star Thomas Ward realised there was something lacking in his career.

Having spent the best part of six years in that “bubble,” Ward worried that he did not know any other producers.

So he introduced himself to a number of producers including – fortuitously for him – RevLover Films’ Martha Coleman. She told him she had optioned Ben Phillips’ blog and e-book Diary of an Uber Driver.

After reading the blog he says: “I really liked the idea of doing a show that explores a community, the intimacy that comes with Uber rides and the fact that the protagonist was the same age as me and from a similar background.”

So he prepared a pitch outlining how he would turn the blog into a half hour series and work-shopped...

Sally Riley explains why the ABC is happy to take commissioning risks
‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’

Sally Riley is bemused when people use this line when they are pitching projects to her: “This is definitely an ABC show.”

The ABC’s head of scripted production, Riley usually replies: “What is that? What is an ABC show?”

Interviewed in her Ultimo office for a two-part story, she tells If: “If it’s a great show, we’ll do it. I don’t think it must fit in the parameters of what is supposed to be an ABC show.

“We want to not only hold our audiences but also bring in new and younger audiences and we have a broad slate to try to meet both. We will definitely take a calculated risk when we believe in a show.”

As an example of a program which she thinks most people would not expect to see on the public broadcaster, she points to Les Norton,...

RevLover’s ‘Diary of an Uber Driver’ gets into gear for the ABC
‘Diary of an Uber Driver’. (Photo credit: Tony Mott)

Ben Phillips’ blog and e-book ‘Diary of an Uber Driver’ has been turned into six-part drama series for the ABC, with production currently underway in Sydney.

Produced by RevLover Films with the support of all3media international and Create Nsw, Diary of an Uber Driver is written by Thomas Ward (Please Like Me) and follows Uber driver Ben as he tries to work out what he should be doing while helping others to get where they are going. Ellipsis (2017)
'Ellipsis': Film Review | Sydney 2017
Ellipsis (2017)
Conceived as an experiment after a more conventional directing project fell over, Ellipsis marks the feature debut of Australian actor turned filmmaker David Wenham (Lion). Shot in Sydney over 11 days and heavily improvised by its two leads, Emily Barclay (The Light Between Oceans) and Benedict Samuel (The Walk), the result is modest and amiable, unfolding over the course of one day and night; it's a kind of Antipodean version of Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise. Wenham earlier directed a segment of The Turning, the 2013 Tim Winton anthology that saw a constellation of Aussie stars debut behind the lens, and...

Ellipsis review – David Wenham's delightful debut sparkles with Sydney and joie de vivre
With nods to Richard Linklater and Woody Allen, Wenham’s small-budget first feature – born from a bet – is cosmopolitan and compassionate

David Wenham’s feature-length directorial debut was conceived as a semi-improvisational experiment, shot in seven days from a script workshopped in three.

The quick turnaround time undoubtedly informed the energy of the film, which ebbs and flows with the élan of its actors – particularly lead stars Emily Barclay and Benedict Samuel, who play strangers sharing a night on the town in Sydney.

David Wenham realises a career-long dream in ‘Ellipsis’
Emily Barclay and Benedict Samuel in 'Ellipsis'..

In the first of a two-part interview, David Wenham talks to If about making his directorial feature debut,.'Ellipsis'..

Across a stellar career spanning 30 years, David Wenham had long wanted to make an experimental, improvisational film in which the story unfolds in the space of one night.

Wenham got his chance with Ellipsis, a low budget film he directed and co-wrote, which will have its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival.

Produced by Arenamedia.s Liz Kearney, the slice-of-life film follows Emily Barclay as Viv and Benedict Samuel as Jasper, who meet by chance and roam the city of Sydney, from bars, a park and a sex shop in Kings Cross, to Bondi.

In a remarkably tight schedule, the cast workshopped the script for three days, a collaborative effort between the two leads, Wenham and director.s assistant Gabrielle Wendelin. The shoot took just seven days,...

LevelK boards 'Lotr' star David Wenham's directorial debut 'Ellipsis'
David Wenham at an event for 300 (2006)
Exclusive: LevelK handling international sales on Sydney-set drama.

LevelK has come on board for international sales, concentrating on worldwide digital distribution rights, for Ellipsis, the feature directorial debut from actor David Wenham (The Lord Of The Rings, Lion).

Emily Barclay (In My Father’s Den) and Benedict Samuel (The Walking Dead) star as two people who bump into each other one night in Sydney, “leading to conversation, a coffee and a nightlong adventure.”

Wenham and Liz Kearney produce for Arenamedia. Robert Connolly is the executive producer. Cinemaplus will release in Australia in the autumn.

Wenham explained, “Ellipsis was devised as an experiment. Conceived and workshopped in 3 days, shot in 7 days. The idea was propelled out of my experiences working as an actor over 30 years in film, the objective was twofold - to observe the effect on actors performance when all artifice is stripped bare and to trial a fast paced, efficient shooting...

Netflix to co-produce second season of Glitch with the ABC, Matchbox
Glitch.

The second season of.Glitch will be co-produced by the ABC, Matchbox and Netflix.—.making it the closest thing to a Netflix Original produced locally..

The first season of the zombie drama streams on Netflix Oz and debuted on Netflix U.S. last week (October 15).

According to Chris Oliver-Taylor, MD of Matchbox Pictures and the show's Ep, "Glitch was something that Netflix were interested in very early as a result of the quality of series one."

"Matchbox always tries to produce programs that work for an international audience. The international deal was reasonably simple to construct; the more complicated piece of the puzzle was working with Netflix, NBCUniversal and the ABC to work out the local Australian arrangements, working through windowing and how to manage on-demand."

Oliver-Taylor is excited about what the deal might mean for the local sector.

"We think that by bringing on Netflix to be a...

One More Trailer for Derek Cianfrance's 'The Light Between Oceans'
"We have to do what's right..." Still one of our most anticipated films to see this year. Vulture has debuted a short new trailer for Derek Cianfrance's The Light Between Oceans, to compliment the new poster also unveiled this week (see it below). The film stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a couple living on an island off the coast of Australia that raise a young child as their own after it washes up on shore one day. The cast includes Rachel Weisz, Emily Barclay, Anthony Hayes and Leon Ford. It's based on the book of the same name which is also worth reading if you're fascinated by this very emotional story. This is the third trailer after two other must watch trailers. The music in these trailers really helps pull me further into this, and I can't wait to finally catch it in theaters in a few months.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander in The Light Between Oceans (2016)
'Light Between Oceans' Trailer: Michael Fassbender Makes a Bad Decision
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander in The Light Between Oceans (2016)
A new crop of Oscar winners will be born when The Academy Awards are handed out live on Sunday, February 28 on ABC. Two of these Oscar nominees, Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) will next be seen together in The Light Between Oceans, arriving in theaters September 2. The Guardian has debuted the first international trailer for this unique drama, which could be an early Oscar contender for next year's ceremony.

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander). Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind.

"My life. Isabel, my love. Every day we spend together..." Studiocanal UK has debuted the first trailer for Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance's latest film, The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Set in Australia in the years following Wwi, the film is about a couple that rescues a small baby that washes ashore, raising her as their own. It's desribed as a "beautiful yet heart-breaking story of love and sacrifice", based on the book by M.L Stedman. The cast includes Rachel Weisz, Benedict Hardie and Emily Barclay, produced by David Heyman. This looks truly wonderful, everything I was expecting it to be. The score in this is already so beautiful, making me feel emotional. Watch below. First Look Photo from Derek Cianfrance's 'The Light Between Oceans'
One of my favorite filmmakers working today is Derek Cianfrance, behind the films Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. Cianfrance's next feature is an adaptation of M.L. Stedman's novel called The Light Between Oceans, about a lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raising a baby they find. Alicia Vikander stars with Michael Fassbender as the married couple on the island, and the cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Emily Barclay and a few others. This first look photo of Vikander standing on a bluff over the ocean is a gorgeous photo and the only shot we've seen from this so far. This is a film I have been tracking closely and I'm already impatient to see, don't even need any footage. Here's the first look photo from Cianfrance's The Light Between Oceans, first found by The Film Stage: The synopsis for the...
