“Following recent review”: Unannounced God of War Cancellation Proves Sony Should Stop Wasting Time on Live Service Games
Image
In an industry increasingly obsessed with live service games, Sony has been on quite the journey lately. From ambitious plans to launch multiple Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) titles to the spectacular flame-out of Concord last year, PlayStation’s relationship with the live service model has been… complicated, to say the least.

Now, in what feels like the latest chapter of a cautionary tale, two more unannounced live service projects have been quietly shelved following a “recent review.” One of these casualties? A live service take on one of gaming’s most beloved single-player franchises. You know the one—the angry dad simulator with all the axe-throwing.

And while Sony maintains that both affected studios will remain operational, one can’t help but wonder if this is finally the wake-up call PlayStation needs. After all, when your greatest recent success...

“Making fun is hard”: EA’s Anthem Aimed to Rival Dragon Age, but Its Lack of Polish and Content Was a Major Misstep
Image
When Electronic Arts (EA) unveiled Anthem in 2017, it marked the company’s next big step in the world of live-service games. The ambitious sci-fi action RPG was positioned to rival beloved franchises like Dragon Age and Destiny. It promised rich storytelling, dynamic multiplayer gameplay, and a captivating open-world experience.

However, upon its release in February 2019, Anthem failed to deliver on its lofty expectations, leading to a frustrating experience for many players and a long road to redemption that EA didn’t manage to fully implement. In an interview, CEO Andrew Wilson openly addressed the game’s shortcomings.

Players were excited prior to the game’s release, as it promised them a vast, ever-changing world to explore while piloting customizable Javelin exosuits.

The Making of ‘Saving Private Ryan’s Legendary D-Day Scene Was a War in and of Itself for Steven Spielberg
Image
Saving Private Ryan follows Tom Hanks' Captain John Miller and his team of soldiers as they attempt to locate and bring home Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) and stands out as a gem among director Steven Spielberg's already uber-impressive filmography. The World War II drama won five Academy Awards—including Best Director and Best Cinematography—and the film's brutal opening scene, which recreates the U.S. Army's landing at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion, was singled out and praised for its accurate depiction of war. The almost half-hour sequence is harrowing and hard to watch, but keep those eyes open during your next viewing, because behind the scenes, Spielberg and his crew were fighting a war of their own to bring us one of Hollywood's most memorable scenes.

Image
Those who were fortunate enough to be around the release of Sony’s PlayStation 2 were treated with an incredible experience that can never be forgotten with all sorts of unique games.

PlayStation 2 has established itself as the best selling console of all time. (Image via PlayStation)

Many gamers consider it the best console of all time, and statistically, that’s actually the case now. Sony has updated the PlayStation website to mention that the PS2 has sold a staggering 160 million units since its release.

However, it’s quite amusing how the company throws such stats whenever Nintendo gives us an update for Switch 2.

PS2’s Latest Sales Figures Prove Sony is Losing Against Nintendo Sony’s success with PS2 doesn’t change the fact that it hasn’t been able to compete against Nintendo. (Image via PlayStation)

Originally debuting all the way back in 2000, the PS2 succeeded the original PlayStation...

Will Suicide Squad: Ktjl Be Cross-Platform & Have Crossplay?
Image
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have crossplay, allowing players to form teams regardless of console or PC preferences. The game will also feature cross-progression, allowing players to carry their levels and skills over to other devices. Currently, these features are only listed for the game's online co-op mode.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will follow Amanda Waller's Task Force X, a team comprised of some of the DC Universe's rogues as they battle DC's primary superhero team, the Justice League. The title takes place in the same universe as Rocksteady Games' Batman: Arkham games, but unlike those titles, Suicide Squad: Ktjl is a third-person shooter that can be played solo with AI teammates, or with up to four players in online co-op. With the game's focus on online co-op, some are likely wondering if players will be restricted to playing with those on their chosen gaming platform,...

Sony sold over 40 mn PS5 consoles since launch
Image
San Francisco, July 28 (Ians) Sony has announced that it has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles to gamers since launch.

“We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019,” Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in a blogpost on Thursday.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges of Covid, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time.”

The pandemic continued to be a challenge for the company, and it took months for supply chains to return to normal so that there would be enough inventory to meet demand.

Ryan further mentioned that “For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues.”

However, now, PS5 supply is well-stocked and the company is seeing that pent-up demand finally being met.

“From...

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish Director Joel Crawford On Making A Darker Movie In The Shrek Universe [Exclusive Interview]
Image
At the beginning of 2022, who would have thought that a sequel to an 11-year-old film, the sixth entry in a 21-year-old franchise, would end up being one of the best animated movies of the year? But that's only part of what's surprising about "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."

Antonio Banderas returns as the titular Puss, who discovers he's down to the last of his nine lives, having lost his other ones by acting recklessly. Depressed and scared for the first time, he embarks on one last desperate quest — to find a legendary Wishing Star, which could grant him more lives and allow him to return to his devil-may-care persona. The film looks stunning, with stylized visuals that mix 3D and 2D, anime-like fight scenes, and a darker story inspired by spaghetti westerns that's reminiscent of something like "Logan."

With the film now in wide release, /Film got the chance...

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Director Joel Crawford on Creating “a Contemporary Fairy Tale”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Made a decade after 2011’s Oscar-nominated Puss in Boots, the sequel that debuts Dec. 21 takes a darker turn as the eponymous feline, voiced by Antonio Banderas, is forced to confront his mortality. “He’s burned through eight of his nine lives, and he’s on his last,” director Joel Crawford says, explaining that while a cat’s nine lives make for a fun premise, the filmmakers used it to talk about a more serious subject. “You have one life, how are you going to live it? That’s such a powerful theme that’s relevant for everybody.”

He adds that Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish aims to deliver “what everyone was expecting: the swashbuckling fun of a Puss in Boots, but also expand the world, even in the look.” The story begins with a song and playful action sequence.

"Frozen," "Monsters University" Top Annie Awards Nominations!
Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.

I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.

Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.
