For most of its existence, the Internet Movie Database's Top 250 movies of all time list has been led by Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption." In this age of online polling, when bots are used to inflate the scores of comic book movies, there is something reassuring about a 142-minute movie about friendship and hope outranking the likes of "The Dark Knight" and "The Avengers." Based on the Stephen King novella from the anthology "Different Seasons," the film boasts a unique, yet confident rhythm that pins the viewer to their seat even if it's their fifth or sixth time through. It certainly helps that people know there's a happy ending coming, but that's still a long haul for a movie set almost entirely in a prison.
The memory of arriving at that perfect runtime proved valuable to Darabont when he found himself struggling with the pace of his third King adaptation,...

Each year American Cinema Editors [1] (Ace) recognizes the best editing of the year in narrative film, documentary and television through the Eddie Awards. The nominations for achievement in 2011 have been released [2]. They include a couple of expected films such as Hugo and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and feature a couple other inclusions that might count as surprises to some. The full list is below. This list comes from the Ace press release about this year's Eddies. In this case, I like that there are feature film categories for dramatic and comedy/musical efforts; not that editing one or the other is more difficult, but editing is such a core component of comedy and musical films, and one that so often goes unheralded and even unexamined, that it deserves a moment in the sun. Looking at the documentary selections, I was at first disappointed not to see Senna included,...

hollywoodnews.com: The American Cinema Editors announced their nominations for the 62nd Annual Ace Eddie Awards Monday morning, recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries.
Like the Golden Globes, the editors divide their films between “Dramatic” and “Comedic” categories, so its tough to peg how (or if) they play into the five Oscar nomination slots. At the very least, you can guess that the Academy’s five nominees will come from the five features listed below.
Winners will be revealed during Ace’s 62nd annual black-tie awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2012 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As previously announced, the ceremony will be hosted by actor/comedian Patton Oswalt. Later this month Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 3: “Save the Last One”
Written by Scott M. Gimple
Directed by Phil Abraham
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
Simon Howell:
Did the crew of The Walking Dead wise up and hire someone from the Breaking Bad editing team? That’s the question I couldn’t stop kicking around when the delightfully macabre “Save the Last One” opened with a puzzling scene of Shane shaving and scowling – a scene that, like many of Breaking Bad‘s cold opens, only revealed its true meaning later. The structural and editing tricks the show experimented with this week – via editor Hunter M. Via, who’s actually a Walking Dead veteran – were a welcome change-up from the show’s usual, doggedly linear approach. This is what a little flair can do. (Also, the post-credits sequence in the school with overlaid voiceover? Very striking.)

The Big News: Final Raw show before Night of Champions saw Cm Punk blast Triple H with a microphone following a heated verbal confrontation. Meanwhile Mark Henry gave Randy Orton another beat-down and John Cena teamed up with home nation legend Bret Hart to take down Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez in tag team action.
Live from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Alberto Del Rio was in the ring to start the show. He said that he could handle boos but he couldn’t tolerate being disrespected by John Cena who had made fun of him and taken him down with an Attitude Adjustment the previous week. Del Rio said that this treatment was not deserving of a man who had sidelined Rey Mysterio, forced Edge into retirement and defeated Cm Punk at SummerSlam. Over the weekend the American Cinema Editors (Ace) held their annual awards, where The Social Network, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 took honors for feature editing in the dramatic, comedy/musical and animated categories. But the highlight of the night may have been the lifetime achievement award given to Michael Kahn, presented by Steven Spielberg. That award was accompanied by a reel highlighting the master editor's many credits, and in the spirit of celebrating someone who has been an invaluable but often invisible contributor to many of the films we love, we present the highlight reel after the break. Mr. Kahn's long collaboration with Steven Spielberg dominates this reel, but there are a handful of other major films represented here, too. The fact that one man has been instrumental to so many major films of the last forty years is simply staggering. (With respect to that collaboration with Steven Spielberg,...
