‘Society’ Writer Peels Back the Layers of His ’80s Cult Classic in ‘The Darkside of Society’ Documentary
Image
In 1989, Brian Yuzna made his directorial debut on Society. 35 years later, screenwriter Zeph E. Daniel peels back the layers to share his chilling truth behind the notorious cult classic in a new documentary.

The Darkside of Society will be released digitally May 13 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Society‘s surreal and grotesque portrayal of elite depravity stunned audiences and secured its place as a horror essential. But while the film’s infamous “shunting” scene left an indelible mark on genre fans, its writer was enduring a very real psychological unraveling behind the scenes.

A raw, unfiltered examination of art, memory, and the dark corners of the creative process, the doc explores Daniel’s revelation that the film’s twisted plot was more autobiographical than he ever intended — a subconscious manifestation of repressed childhood trauma.

It features interviews with Yuzna, Society special effects designer Screaming Mad George, Color Out of Space director Richard Stanley,...

‘Thorns’ – ‘Hellraiser’ Inspired Horror Movie Starring Doug Bradley Releases in May [Trailer]
Image
Director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis) took inspiration from horror classics including The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist for his new movie Thorns, but it’s pretty clear that the biggest inspiration on the film was Hellraiser. In fact, Thorns looks like something of a lost Hellraiser sequel, right down to Doug Bradley starring in the film.

Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” and you can watch the trailer below for a taste. It was debuted exclusively over on Dread Central earlier today.

Dread also reveals that Thorns will be coming to VOD on May 6 from Vantage Media.

In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former...

Doug Bradley in Hellraiser (1987)
An homage to films including Hellraiser, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist, upcoming horror movie Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” and Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a bloody exclusive clip this week.

From director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns features horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), said to be playing a “mysterious archbishop.”

In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. 5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in January 2024
Image
It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.

Knife of Ice (1972)

Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.

Directed by Umberto Lenzi.

Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

Living With Chucky Review
Image
Plot: Kyra Gardner, the daughter of special effects artist and puppeteer Tony Gardner, takes a journey through the Child’s Play franchise.

Review: Friday the 13th has Crystal Lake Memories (both the book and the movie). The Nightmare on Elm Street series has the documentary Never Sleep Again. But a lot of the big horror franchises are still waiting to receive their definitive documentaries. Last year, I read the book Reign of Chucky, a film-by-film examination of the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise that was packed with interesting information about the making of the movies. But since it was assembled during the production of season 2 of the Chucky TV series, it was missing one major element: authors Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins weren’t able to land interviews with some of the most prominent players in the franchise, like Don Mancini, who has written every entry in the series, or actors Brad Dourif,...

‘Thorns’ – Gnarly New Images from Doug Bradley-Starring Movie That Looks Like a ‘Hellraiser’ Sequel
Image
Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns immediately caught our attention last year, and Fangoria now shares some fresh imagery.

Schulze tells Fangoria, “The intention was to make a ‘monster’ movie as a kind of homage to the great horror cinema of the ’70s and ’80s. John Carpenter’s The Thing, Ridley Scott’s Alien, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and, of course, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser were all inspiring.”

On that note, horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and these new images give us our first look at Bradley’s character, a “mysterious archbishop.”

In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon...

‘Thorns’ Trailer – Doug Bradley Stars in New Horror Movie That Looks Like a ‘Hellraiser’ Sequel
Doug Bradley
Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze is the indie horror movie Thorns, and Gruesome Magazine has debuted the official trailer this week.

Horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and what’s interesting about this one is that it looks like a direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel from back in the day. The film is of course not actually connected to the franchise, but it seems to be a love letter to the long-running saga that made Doug Bradley a household name among horror fans.

In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon his lost faith to stop the signal from jumpstarting the end of the world.”

Re-animator – The Blu Review
Review by Roger Carpenter

Earlier this summer I wrote a review for Arrow’s release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I didn’t review the film itself because I assumed the readers who might click on the review already knew the film well and were mostly concerned with whether or not it was worth picking up another copy of the film. I’m going to make the same assumption about Re-Animator, perhaps the only film in the history of cinema to ask the MPAA to surrender its R-rating so it could be released in unrated form (actually, re-released).

The film itself is a horror-comedy classic based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser known works entitled Herbert West: Re-Animator. At the time of its theatrical release it was considered cutting edge in the area of gore as well as altogether outrageousness. I suspect Lovecraft, who was so adept...

Arrow

1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017

Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton

Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg

Film Editor: Lee Percy

Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris

Produced by Brian Yuzna

Music: Richard Band

Directed by Stuart Gordon

Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.

Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Fantasia 2016: Watch Guillermo del Toro's One-Hour Master Class on Creature Design
During the 2016 edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival, director Guillermo del Toro was given the prestigious Cheval Noir award for his exceptional career in the cinema of the fantastic up to this point. This award was handed out after a screening of Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex. GdT then stuck around and gave one of his delightful and quite substantial lectures of the art, philosophy, and nuts and bolts of designing monsters for the big screen.  The entire lecture/discussion was moderated by former Fangoria Editor Tony Timpone, and it includes about 20 minutes of questions from the audience. A New Trailer for the VHS Collector Doc ‘Adjust Your Tracking’
Last April, Dan Kinem launched a Kickstarter campaign to get additional funding to finish the documentary Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector. For VHS collectors, Dan is pretty well known. He is part of the VHShitfest YouTube channel that published a lot of clips from obscure VHS tapes as well as some VHS hunts they used to go on. The Kickstarter campaign was a success and the doc is done. A new trailer has been released and  it features interviews with Lloyd Kaufman, Sam Sherman, Fred Vogel, Tony Timpone, and tons of others.

The film will be premiering at Texas Frightmare Weekend this weekend and has screenings for Severed,  a VHS swap meet, and Days of the Dead in Indianapolis. The film is also looking to book a U.S. tour this summer so it may be coming to a town near you.
