Yellowstone: 10 Most Annoying Characters Taylor Sheridan Has Written
Image
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is packed with characters so frustrating that they hit below the belt. Since its inception in 2017, it has laid bare a brutal world of power struggles, family legacies, and ranch life, soaked in blood, betrayal, and bad calls.

Set in Montana’s unforgiving plains, the Duttons, led by John Dutton, have fought tooth and nail to protect their ancestral Yellowstone Ranch. But amid the gunfights and drama, Sheridan has created characters so aggravating that even the cattle would be shaking their heads.

Let’s cut to the chase: here are Yellowstone’s most infuriating characters. You’ve stuck through five seasons, endured the accents, and screamed at your screen. Now here’s the proof in black and white.

10. Walker Still from Yellowstone | Paramount Network

Ryan Bingham’s character, Walker, rolled into Season 1 as an ex-con with a guitar, a soft drawl, and enough smugness to make...

"That's Not the Name of It": 'Yellowstone's Cole Hauser Denies Speculation Over Spin-Off
Image
Well, Rip Wheeler rides again. Cole Hauser has officially confirmed what Yellowstone fans have been hoping for — he’s returning to the world of Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western. Speaking at the Professional Bull Riding (Pbr) finals in Arlington, Texas, Hauser not only confirmed his involvement but also took a shot at one of the most circulated rumors: the title. “Well, first of all, it’s not Dutton Ranch,” Hauser told Fox News. “That’s not the name of it.”

While Paramount has yet to formally announce the title or release date, multiple outlets have previously reported that the Yellowstone sequel is set to debut this fall, likely around November. Hauser’s co-star Kelly Reilly is also slated to return as Beth Dutton, making the series a direct continuation of their iconic and often chaotic love story. And no doubt some local hoodlums will find their faces smashed in.

What Branding Really Means On Yellowstone, According To Kelly Reilly
Image
Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" is a love letter to ranching, with many scenes centering around cowboys herding cattle and putting in a hard day's work. However, the cows aren't the only living things being branded by hot iron in this universe. To become part of the Dutton family's inner circle, their employees must bear a mark on their skin that forever binds them to the ranch, which is arguably worse than a prison sentence.

Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton in Paramount's neo-Western series, has her own views on what the branding means for the denizens of the Dutton family's ranch. While she acknowledges that the "Y" symbol represents allegiance and loyalty to a family of murderers, the "Yellowstone" star also believes that it has a more profound meaning. As she told ScreenRant:

"If you leave, you're on the train. Because there are some dodgy things that are happening at Yellowstone,...

Yellowstone: Every Main Character Ending, Ranked
Image
Easily one of the most popular television shows of the late-2010s and early-2020s, "Yellowstone" left a distinct but messy mark when it ended. The western series created by Taylor Sheridan tracked the lives and machinations of the Duttons, a Ewing-esque family of powerful businesspeople and politicians who preside over the titular palatial ranch and spacious plot of land it resides on in Montana.

The series galloped along smoothly for four and a half seasons (spawning several spin-offs in the process), until star Kevin Costner suddenly left the show before production could begin on the second half of season 5. His character had to be written off as a result, and the series as a whole began speeding toward an explosive, confusing end for its ensemble of characters. Now that the dust is settled, we've taken a gander at the fate of each main "Yellowstone" character, ranking them by how...

Yellowstone: What Did Wade Morrow Steal From John Dutton?
Image
The death of Kevin Costner's John Dutton in "Yellowstone" season 5 took many viewers by surprise, as the character was an unstoppable force until his polarizing assassination. That said, his demise was arguably a long-time coming, as the cowboy had a massive list of enemies, which brought him into contact with some undesirable folks. Enter Wade Morrow (Boots Southerland), a corrupt rancher who goes way back with John.

Wade is introduced in "Yellowstone" season 3 as a neighboring rancher who keeps meddling in the Duttons' business. His antics range from herding buffalo close to John's land to trampling two of his ranchers, Teeter (Jennifer Landon) and Colby (Denim Richards), with his horse while the young lovers are trying to enjoy some romantic time together away from the hustle and bustle of cowboying. He's a nasty piece of work, and he holds a grudge against the Dutton family tree.

It's later revealed...

What Is The Train Station On Yellowstone?
Image
As quickly established in "Yellowstone," there's more to the Dutton ranch than herding cattle and breaking horses. Until his untimely death, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his family built an empire on endless corrupt deals, exploiting anyone who dared think they had a shot at overpowering one of the most powerful families in Montana. As a result, any wrongdoer who dared make the grave miscalculation of taking them on often got sent to a location kept off the map. This hidden secret was a private place for the Duttons and, more specifically, their right-hand man, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), for whenever an issue needed dealing with permanently.

This spot, known as the train station, was the final stop for those who crossed our favorite family, whether they liked it or not. Just as often as brawls in the bunkhouse explode in Taylor Sheridan's epic crime saga, visits were made to this haunting dumping ground,...

Yellowstone's Gil Birmingham Talks Series Finale, Rainwater Getting The Ranch, Treaty With Kayce, Potential Future & More
Image
Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for the Yellowstone series finale!Rainwater's efforts to acquire the Dutton Ranch have come to an end in the Yellowstone series finale. Played by Gil Birmingham since the show's launch, Thomas Rainwater is the Chief of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation and was introduced as an antagonist to Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, working to reclaim the land the Duttons call home for his people. As the show has progressed, though, and other threats have come to Montana, Rainwater and Dutton have steadily had to put their differences aside to work together to protect those they care about.

Yellowstone season 5 has brought the Taylor Sheridan show to a close, with Rainwater and Mo working with John after he won the race for governor to ensure that an oil pipeline doesn't go through their land. In the wake of John's death, and Kayce and Beth's investigation...

The Best Episode Of Yellowstone, According To IMDb
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the modern cable TV era, nothing is — or perhaps was — bigger than "Yellowstone." Created by mega-producer Taylor Sheridan, the Western centered on the Dutton family had somewhat humble beginnings as a drama produced for Paramount Network before it exploded in popularity. Recently, with the "Yellowstone" season 5 finale in the books, the show is over. What comes next? We'll have to see but looking back, what was the best episode of the show? There is a definitive answer, at least according to IMDb.

According to the tallied ratings by IMDb, no episode ranked higher than "Half the Money." The episode served as the "Yellowstone" season 4 premiere, first airing on November 7, 2021. By this time, audiences had caught up to the show and it was firmly in "biggest show on cable" territory. Written personally by Sheridan and directed by Stephen Kay, it...

6 Unanswered Questions Yellowstone Failed To Address
Image
"Yellowstone" season 5 is over, and with its final episode, the main flagship series appears to have rode off into the sunset for good. The franchise will continue with spin-offs like "1923," "The Madison," "6666," and more, so fans can look forward to more series set in Taylor Sheridan's cowboy-loving universe. At the same time, the end of "Yellowstone" has left us with burning questions that still need to be answered.

Of course, no one who watches "Yellowstone" is too concerned about plot holes. Viewers learned to accept them in season 1 after Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) dug up some dinosaur bones and the show led us to believe that people might come to try and claim them, only to never revisit the story. In some ways, "Yellowstone" is charming for its tendency to forget about certain plots while unloading more outlandish drama at us, and that's fine.

That said, while...

Where Every Dutton Ranch Cowboy Ends Up In The Yellowstone Finale
Image
Spoiler Alert for Yellowstone season 5, part 2Each cowboy in Yellowstone has exciting endeavors on the horizon, even if they can't work at the Dutton Ranch after the season 5 finale. Kayce sells the Yellowstone to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Tribe in Yellowstone season 5, episode 14, ending the Dutton occupation of Native land. The development is inspiring but leaves the cowboys out of a job. Even Lloyd has to seek a new opportunity despite Rip asking him to stay. The ranch hands started to ask questions as cattle and horses left the ranch in droves, and those questions were answered in the finale.

As fans react to the Yellowstone season 5 finale, some find it predictable, but few can deny that each of the series' best stories was neatly concluded. That includes the evolving stories of its ranch hands, who either sought another cowboy outfit or used the employment lapse to water other gardens.

Yellowstone Calls Out Its Most Baffling Detail Just Before It Ended

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season 5, episode 14, "Life Is a Promise."

The Yellowstone finale closes out various storylines and brings character arcs full circle, but it also addresses one of the show's most puzzling and debated aspects. Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western drama (supposedly) ended in December 2024, more than six years since its premiere, following the last episode of season 5 — "Life Is a Promise." As of the writing of this article, it remains unclear if Yellowstone will return for a sixth season. However, Deadline confirmed that the Rip and Beth spinoff is a go, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser set to reprise their roles.

‘Yellowstone’ Flatlined After Kevin Costner Left, but the Series Finale Was a Fitting Tribute to the Show’s Glory Days
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the Season 5, Episode 14 episode of “Yellowstone,” “Life Is a Promise” which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on Paramount Network.

Kevin Costner’s early departure from “Yellowstone” killed the show.

It happens with nearly every series put in that uneasy predicament. No “Office” fan cites seasons after Steve Carell left as their favorite. “The X-Files” fizzled once David Duchovny left. And although firing Kevin Spacey was the right call, Netflix’s final season of “House of Cards” without its lead was forgettable.

Meanwhile, Costner made an unfortunate gamble on himself, leaving the lucrative “Yellowstone” after the first half of Season 5 to focus on his big-budget vanity project, the film series “Horizon.” Cut to the end of 2024, where “Yellowstone” still has huge ratings, whereas the first “Horizon” was a box office bomb and the second lacks a theatrical release date.

Despite being an unwise fiscal decision, Costner’s departure seemed final,...

Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 14 Review: Taylor Sheridan's Predictable Finale Is A Devastating Emotional Letdown
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season 5, episode 14, "Life Is a Promise."

Although the future of Yellowstone remains unclear following the airing of "Life Is a Promise," it's clear the season 5 finale is designed to act as a series finale, but it fails to achieve all the great qualities of one. Taylor Sheridan's TV show seemingly ends with conclusions to most of the characters' stories, which is a good thing at first glance. Under the surface, though, each development in Yellowstone season 5, episode 14 lacks surprise and impact, making the hour quite forgettable despite its perceived significance to not only the neo-Western drama series but also to TV history.

Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner and centers on his character John Dutton. Dutton and his family live on a cattle ranch just a few hours away from Yellowstone National Park. The series chronicles the family’s struggle to defend...

‘Now that scene is just bizarre writing’: There’s No Forgiveness for Taylor Sheridan for Ruining Jamie and Beth After Promising Yellowstone Scene
Image
“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” Those words from The Shawshank Redemption could not be more fitting for many relationships—especially when we look at the complicated and sometimes heartbreaking connection between Jamie and Beth Dutton in Yellowstone.

A still from Yellowstone | Credit: Paramount

Fans have been holding their breath, waiting for a breakthrough moment, where these two characters—torn by years of resentment, pain, and family dynamics—could perhaps find some healing, or at the very least, an understanding. Unfortunately, as season after season passes, it seems that Taylor Sheridan has left us holding the bag, with no real resolution in sight.

There was one episode in season one where Jamie had a rare moment of emotional openness, offering to comfort Beth on the anniversary of their mother’s death. But instead of seizing the moment, it’s almost...

‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Episode 14 Recap: Season Finale Wraps Up Key Storylines
Image
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser in ‘Yellowstone’ season 5 episode 14, the season finale (Photo Credit: Paramount Network)

Paramount Network spent months telling Yellowstone fans that the fifth season is the show’s final. Even if that is confirmed, Yellowstone, as fans have known it for five seasons, ends with season five episode 14, “Life is a Promise.”

The following recap is spoiler-filled, so read at your own risk.

The season finale opens with dozens of tribal members riding out in the dead of night and destroying portions of the pipeline by dumping them in the lake.

Over at the ranch, the entire Yellowstone gang hangs out in the bunkhouse while Travis (Taylor Sheridan) tells stories. There’s lots of laughter...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the Season 5, Episode 14 episode of “Yellowstone,” “Life Is a Promise” which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on Paramount Network.

Even if Paramount Network isn’t calling it the series finale, Sunday’s “Yellowstone” episode certainly felt like the end of the show fans have known for five seasons.

Coming in the wake of last week’s fire sale of nearly everything on the ranch, the series’ wandering souls were left adrift.

There were some goodbyes early on, as Jimmy (Jefferson White), Mia (Eden Brolin) and Travis (Taylor Sheridan) headed back home to the 6666 in Texas, with Teeter (Jen Landon) promising to come down in a week looking for work. Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 13 Review: Taylor Sheridan's Self-Indulgence Derails Painfully Uneventful Penultimate Finale
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season 5, episode 13, "Give the World Away."

I thought the penultimate episode of Yellowstone would be full of exciting, game-changing moments that set up a thrilling series finale, but I was wrong. The end is closer than ever for Taylor Sheridan's TV show, and the writer continues wasting time the show just doesn't have. Instead of progressing Yellowstone season 5, part 2's most intriguing conflicts and stories, "Give the World Away" is full of unnecessary fluff that, at the end of the day, is forgettable. I’ve never understood if the Duttons are rich as hell or debtors with wild loans. The economics of ranch life don’t make any sense to me! Jamie sitting around depressed in his underwear and yelling at the TV … shouldn’t you be running around shredding more documents? Of course Beth has her brother saved in her phone as something profane. Going back to the finance issue, Beth is flying private.

'Yellowstone' Just Killed Off Another Major Character

Quick Links 'Yellowstone's' Most Recent Death, Explained Who Else Has Been Killed in 'Yellowstone' Season 5B?

In what has become a tireless storytelling motif, Yellowstone continues to kill off several main characters ahead of the series finale on December 15, 2024. The trend began with John Dutton's shocking bathroom death in the Season 5, Part 2 premiere, giving way to Kevin Costner's departure. In the three subsequent episodes, more deaths have plagued the Dutton family and their extended orbit, leaving fans wondering who, if anyone, will come out alive in the final two episodes.

While it appears the recent Yellowstone deaths will dovetail into Taylor Sheridan's latest series spin-off, The Madison, the recurring cycle of death, murder, and mayhem underscores the dangers of frontier living on a reservation. Regardless of how the final Yellowstone episodes set up The Madison, there's nothing easy or predictable about saying goodbye...

‘Yellowstone’: Denim Richards Breaks Down Colby’s Dramatic Horse Scene, His Love Story With Teeter and the Cowboy Gear That He Took From Set
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the Season 5, Episode 12 episode of “Yellowstone,” “Counting Coup,” which premiered Sunday, Dec. 1, on Paramount Network.

Pour one out for Colby.

The fan-favorite cowboy always lit up the “Yellowstone” bunkhouse, fueled by an easy energy from actor Denim Richards. Paired with that was a budding romance with Teeter (Jennifer Landon), which was cut short by Colby’s untimely death in Sunday’s episode. He went out on top, saving Carter (Finn Little) from a wild horse that eventually kicked him one too many times. Variety spoke with Richards about where he was when he first heard the news of his character’s death, preparing for his final romantic moment with Landon and the joy of acting opposite Kelly Reilly’s Beth.

When did you first find out that Colby was going to die?

That happened in May. I was coming back from Dallas, from the U.

Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12 Review: An Unnecessary Death Distracts From What's Important
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, "Counting Coup."

Although episode 11 signaled that Yellowstone season 5, part 2 was turning around after a couple of poor hours, episode 12, "Counting Coup," unfortunately brings the series back down to the ground. Prior to "Counting Coup," Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western drama TV show only had three episodes left to close out its story and conclude character arcs in a way that would satisfy us. Instead, episode 12 did little to move the plot forward and contains a death that is unnecessary and quite disappointing.

Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner and centers on his character John Dutton. Dutton and his family live on a cattle ranch just a few hours away from Yellowstone National Park. The series chronicles the family’s struggle to defend their home from an Indian reservation and land developers. As if their life wasn’t complicated enough, the Duttons also have medical issues,...

Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 10 Review: Taylor Sheridan Wastes Precious Time Ahead Of The Series Finale
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season 5, episode 10, "The Apocalypse of Change."

With only so many episodes left before Yellowstone reaches its end, season 5, episode 10 does little to advance the show's final story, wasting precious time with flashbacks. At least, the scenes in question appear to be flashbacks. Taylor Sheridan's widely popular neo-Western drama is set to conclude following its fifth season finale (unless the reports about Yellowstone season 6 are true). So, it stands to reason that every second counts, but one wouldn't be able to tell while watching "The Apocalypse of Change."

Image
Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for Yellowstone season 5 part B, episode 9, "Desire Is All You Need"!

Chief Thomas Rainwater's path to acquiring the Dutton ranch just got a little more open in Yellowstone season 5 part B. Played by Gil Birmingham, the leader of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation has served as a rival to Kevin Costner's John Dutton and most of his family throughout the show's run, wanting to reclaim the land the titular ranch is built on for his people. Along the way, however, he and the Dutton family have grown closer to one another when their interests have aligned, including stopping the building of a pipeline through the reservation.

Rainwater has also been closely involved in Kayce and Monica's lives, supporting them through the grief process of losing their son and initiating the former in the warrior ways of his tribe. The Yellowstone season 5 part B premiere dropped...

Well, they did it. They killed off John Dutton. In Yellowstone season 5 part 2's opening moments, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilley) arrives at the Governor's Mansion in Helena, Montana to a crime scene, the driveway cordoned off and an ambulance waiting outside. When Kacey Dutton (Luke Grimes) shows up, he forces his way into the house so that he and Beth can see John's body on the bathroom floor, a gun mere inches from his hands. It looks like suicide, though Beth knows right away that her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) is behind it.

‘Yellowstone’: Who Was Billy Klapper? That Episode Dedication, Explained
Image
The “Yellowstone” premiere on Sunday night contained not one, but two upsetting deaths. However, only one of them happened in real life.

Part of “Desire Is All You Need” followed Rip (Cole Hauser) as he travelled to a loriner to pick up a horse bit for Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith). But while he was at the shop in Pampa, Texas, the work of one craftsman in particular caught his eye, specifically a set of spurs that were made from a single piece of metal. That craftsman was Billy Klapper, who appeared in the episode as himself.

A legend in his field, Klapper started to make bits and spurs full-time in 1968. He was specifically known in the cowboy community for his one piece spurs, the very same piece that catches Rip’s eye in the episode. He was also one of the few remaining spur makers to be trained by Adolph Bayers,...

Yellowstone's Cole Hauser & Kelly Reilly Talk Beth's War With Jamie And Rip Taking Over The Ranch In Season 5 Part B
Image
The early days of Rip and Beth's marriage are being put to the test in Yellowstone season 5 part B. After the first few seasons saw their relationship proceed at a casual pace, the season 4 ending saw the two finally tie the knot, with the latter kidnapping a Catholic priest and bringing him to the Dutton family ranch to marry them. While season 5 part A has generally seen the two living happily while also raising Carter, now far more mature, it's also followed Beth as her feud with her adoptive brother Jamie has escalated.

The Yellowstone season 5 part A ending presented the couple with two major hurdles, the first of which being that Kevin Costner's John Dutton III had sent Rip and a select number of cowboys down to Texas to protect his livestock after part of his land has become contaminated. More than a simple transport, this requires Rip...

Yellowstone's Wes Bentley On Beth & Jamie's War And Who He's The Most Afraid Of In Season 5 Part B
Image
Jamie's hunt for power is reaching into deadly territory in Yellowstone season 5 part B. The Dutton son has spent the past two seasons struggling to find himself since learning he was adopted by Kevin Costner's John after his biological father murdered his mother. Season 5 part A, in particular, has seen Jamie growing discontent with John becoming the Governor of Montana, frustrated by being further pushed away from having control over the family's ranch, all while trying to be a part of his son's life.

The Yellowstone season 5 part A finale saw things escalate to an all-time high for Jamie as, per the influence of Market Equities' Sarah Atwood, he publicly called for John's impeachment. Beth, enraged by his actions, threatens her adoptive brother that their war is only just beginning, having also previously discussed with her father the possibility of taking Jamie to the "Train Station", the infamous region...
