‘Quiet On Set’ Team Says There’s A “100 Percent Chance” For Positive Change On Kids Shows Because Of Docuseries – Contenders TV: The Nominees
Image
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV may have exposed the ugly underbelly of ’90s kids TV, but good things have come from the documentary series that’s up for Best Documentary at this year’s Emmy Awards.

In Deadline’s conversation with the executive producers and participants of the Investigation Discovery project during Contenders Television: The Nominees, former All That cast member Bryan Hearne says he feels like there is a “100 percent chance” that positive change will follow now that executive producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz have shined a light on this dark period.

The docuseries, which is also vying for an Emmy in Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, set out to uncover the toxic and dangerous culture on the sets of Dan Schneider’s Nickelodeon children’s shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Most American millennials were devastated after the release of the shocking Netflix show, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV this year. The creators of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV say they’re open to making a follow up to the series, which scored two Emmy Nominations today, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

“The response to the project has been overwhelming, surprising and gratifying,” Executive Producer Mary Robertson told Deadline. “It has certainly grown beyond our every expectation, and it’s particularly rewarding to see the response to the [series] evolve into calls for protection within the entertainment industry.”

Lori Beth Denberg alleges Dan Schneider showed her porn and fondled her breasts, painting a dark picture of the hostile work environment. Schneider denies allegations, admits past mistakes, and is suing Quiet on Set producers for defamation. Denberg speaks out to make others feel safe sharing their experiences, emphasizing the importance of right versus wrong.

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has been a ringing alarm throughout the industry as the docuseries shined a light on toxic work environments on the set of children's TV shows, most notably several hit shows on Nickelodeon run by Dan Schneider. In addition to this, it also made very public the inappropriate behavior exhibited by Brian Peck, a dialogue coach that worked on various Nickelodeon series who was subsequently arrested in 2003 for sexually assaulting Drake Bell, who was 15-years old at the time. In 2023, The Last of Us broke records with the highest ever debut on Max. However, it seems that the horrors of a video game-based apocalypse are no match for the disturbing truth shared in the new documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV , which has smashed through the Pedro Pascal-led series record of 1.2 billion watched minutes to claim the top-spot. Quiet on Set: Unpacking the New In-Studio Interviews
Drake Bell
There were a few unanswered questions in the wake of the Quiet On Set docuseries release.

Viewers wanted to understand the dynamic between Drake Bell and Dan Schneider. Bell's description of Schneider differed from the picture painted by everyone else interviewed.

Folks also wondered if any of the celebrities who backed Bryan Peck had spoken out since the series shed light on their support.

The latest episode of Investigation Discovery's Quiet On Set is a departure from the original four. This time, it's a less dramatic setting.

The episode features noted reporter Soledad O'Brien as she chats first with Drake Bell virtually and then in-studio with Giovonnie Samuels, Bryan Hearne, Tracey Brown, and Shane Lyons.

While the new episode didn't reveal anything quite as shocking as previous installments, it provided some clarity on a few things that were already addressed.

‘Quiet on Set’ Directors Hint at Social Media as Next Area of Child Entertainment to Investigate
Image
The response to ID’s docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has been overwhelming to say the least, the project’s co-directors and executive producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz said at an Emmys FYC screening and panel in Los Angeles Tuesday evening. It’s also brought into focus another industry where there’s a “clear lack of protection” when it comes to children, Schwartz said: social media.

“One thing that we’ve had conversations about as a result of this is that, if you look at where children’s entertainment, so to speak, is today, it’s not just in studios or in networks, it’s on social media,” said the filmmaker. “That is a universe where there’s almost no oversight as to what’s happening inside people’s homes, on these screens, and what’s happening to protect those kids as well, and...

Drake Bell Says Brian Peck Supporters Included ‘Drake and Josh’ Crew Members and a Woman Who Was ‘Basically His Boss’
Image
While speaking at the For Your Consideration Panel for “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” Drake Bell shared that those who wrote letters of support for his abuser, Brian Peck, included “Drake and Josh” crew members, such as his “favorite director” whom he “requested” for the Nickelodeon sitcom and a woman whom he “worked with every day for four years” who was “basically his boss.”

Bell, who was revealed to be the John Doe victim in Peck’s 2004 conviction in Episode 2 of “Quiet on Set,” took the stage at the Saban Media Center in Los Angeles Tuesday night to discuss his journey around the tell-all docuseries. He was joined by fellow contributors Giovonnie Samuels, Bryan Hearne, Kate Taylor and “Quiet on Set” co-directors Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz.

When initially approached to share his story on “Quiet on Set,” Bell was “totally going to ignore” the offer.

If there was an upside to doing Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, Drake Bell said it would be the strangers who have approached him with gratitude before sharing their own sad tales of abuse.

But Bell, who participated in an FYC event Tuesday for the Investigation Discovery series, also talked about the sense of conflict he’s been feeling ever since he agreed to expose some of the darkest parts of his childhood in the four-part docuseries. Sunday’s new episode of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV — now titled, Quiet on Set: Breaking the Silence — featured some fresh new perspectives from those who participated in the Investigation Discovery docuseries, including from former Nickelodeon‘s All That costars Giovonnie Samuels and Bryan Hearne. In the episode, the two reminisced about how they felt about being the only two Black people on the set of the show — in front of or behind the cameras — other than their parents who joined them. “It was very evident from the first day it was just the two of us. And I’ve said that before on social media, that’s the very first thing you do … as a Black person, person of color, you count who’s in the room in front and behind the camera. And there were two,” Samuels remembered. The two were also presented with...

‘Quiet on Set’ Bonus Episode Keeps Spotlight on Dan Schneider and Brian Peck: “A #MeToo Movement for Kids”
Image
The Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV directors plan to continue to investigate kids entertainment in Hollywood, even after dropping their latest bonus episode on Sunday with Quiet on Set: Breaking The Silence.

“We’re hearing calls for federal legislation,” series co-director Mary Robertson tells The Hollywood Reporter when talking about next steps. “At the moment there is no federal legislation that governs children who work in entertainment, or that regulates children working in entertainment.”

The bonus episode, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, delves deeper into the claims surrounding Dan Schneider and the Nickelodeon series he created and ran. The formerly prolific kids TV producer has faced allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate behavior involving underage stars and crewmembers on his shows since the release of the two-part docuseries on March 17 and 18. (He responded with a 19-minute apology video.)

The harrowing docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has shed a light on the abuse and mistreatment suffered by many child stars working for Nickelodeon, specifically those on shows run by Dan Schneider, the producer of All That and The Amanda Show.

The first four episodes featured testimonials from former child stars who worked on shows produced by Schneider, including Drake Bell, Giovonnie Samuels, Bryan Christopher Hearne, and Katrina Johnson. They talked bravely about the toxic work environment they experienced as children, and the abuse that many of them suffered from the adults they worked with.

Episode 5 will feature a different format from the others, with journalist Soledad O’Brien leading an interview with Bell, Samuels, Hearne, Hearne’s mother Tracey Brown, as well as former All That cast member Shane Lyons, who is appearing in the docuseries for the first time. O’Brien is set to...

‘Quiet On Set’ Filmmakers Discuss Response To Docuseries, Episode 5 & “Continuing To Explore” Toxic Kids TV: Q&a
Image
This post contains details from the first four episodes of ID’s documentary series Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.

A little over a year and a half ago, producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz began to have some questions about kids television. More specifically, about the heyday of Nickelodeon.

“Emma and I had noticed…compilations of clips that were made on sets that Dan Schneider presided over, and these compilations were making their way around social media. They included clips of material that is arguably sexual in nature,” Robertson told Deadline. “If this arguably sexual content was being created on sets featuring child actors, for children to absorb, what else was possibly happening? What could this portend or signal about what was really happening behind the scenes?”

Eventually, those questions would evolve into something much more as the two women took a deep dive into what...

Investigation Discovery has released a new sneak peek of Sunday’s bonus episode of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, and, perhaps surprisingly, it features a much lighter moment than what audiences may be used to with this gutting docuseries. In the clip from Quiet on the Set: Breaking the Silence, host Soledad O’Brien brings together All That alums Giovonnie Samuels and Bryan Hearne, who previously participated in the docuseries, to see their former costar Shane Lyons, who brings a new testimony to the story in the standalone episode. Their reunion, despite the circumstances, is a joyous occasion. “These are the people I grew up with. These are my brothers,” Samuels says with a smile in the clip. “We have this special connection with each other. And even if we don’t see each other every day, it’s like we pick up where we left off.

“We first started talking to [co-directors] Mary [Robertson] and Emma [Schwartz] about [extending the series] right after the trailer dropped,” Sarlanis recalled of the Feb. 8 first look, which featured clips of child stars coming forward with claims of abuse and sexism surrounding iconic kids TV shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s on Nickelodeon.

Image
Kenan Thompson has opened up about his time as a child star at Nickelodeon and the new perspective he has gained on it following the release of “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” a new documentary series that features allegations of abuse against crew members at the network.

Thompson’s comments came Wednesday during an interview on the daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” touching on his new production banner Afa, his record-breaking tenure on “Saturday Night Live” and his new memoir “When I Was Your Age.”

Thompson got started as a child performer, though, serving as an original cast member of the teenage-cast sketch show “All That” and starring alongside his peer Kel Mitchell in the sitcom “Kenan & Kel” and the feature film “Good Burger,” all of which were produced by Nickelodeon. During the interview with Hall, Thompson confirmed that he has not watched “Quiet on Set,...

How To Watch The New Bonus Episode Of Quiet On Set
Image
The horrifying new Investigation Discovery docuseries "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" will release an additional episode in early April, according to Variety. The series' first four episodes dropped on ID and Max less than two weeks ago, but have already been viewed by an audience of 16 million people, per the outlet. They've also inspired countless tough conversations about their dark subject matter -- the abuse and mistreatment of multiple child stars and crew members behind the scenes during the heyday of Nickelodeon.

"Quiet on Set" includes interviews with former Nick stars and others who witnessed the reportedly toxic work environments on Nickelodeon shows dating back to the network's early days. Prolific producer Dan Schneider (who was an unnamed but sinister figure in Jennette McCurdy's 2022 memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died") is at the center of the show's conversations about sexism and mistreatment. Meanwhile, one shocking...
