Netflix’s ‘With Love, Meghan’ Season 2 Trailer Shows a Humbler Meghan Markle
Image
Meet Netflix’s Meghan 2.0.

The first trailer for the second season of With Love, Meghan returns the Duchess of Sussex to the kitchen and garden for another round of aspirational cozy cooking along with a bevy of friends (famous friends, naturally).

This time, however, the trailer portrays Meghan a bit differently than in the trailer for the first season — where Markle was shown expertly whipping up stunning creations while giving advice (“that’s what you want, you want that shape and texture…”) while enamored celebrities looked on (“This is probably one of the most glamorous moments of my life,” enthused Mindy Kaling).

Season two’s trailer (below) shows Meghan learning from experts and warmly appreciating the efforts of others. “Let’s get creative and learn something new,” she says, and then later: “I’m so glad you came and showed me how to do this.” In another beat, when mixing ingredients,...

The eight-episode, half-hour season features celebrity guests Christina Tosi, Clare Smyth, Daniel Martin, David Chang, Heather Dorak, Jamie Kern Lima, Jay Shetty, Radhi Devlukia, Samin Nosrat and Tan France.

‘With Love, Meghan’ Struggles To Match ‘Harry & Meghan’ Numbers As It Scrapes Into Netflix’s Ratings Chart
Image
With Love, Meghan has had a lot of press coverage. But the lifestyle series fronted by Meghan Markle struggled in the ratings, only just sneaking into Netflix’s top ten weekly ratings chart.

The eight-part series reached 12.6M hours viewed in its first week on the streamer. This was number ten behind ratings leader Kate Hudson-led comedy Running Point, which had 61.8M hours viewed across the week.

This was significantly down on the ratings for Harry & Meghan, which premiered in December 2022 and became Netflix’s biggest documentary debut ever. That series, which was directed by Liz Garbus, debuted with 81.6M hours viewed in its first three days and adding another 97.7M in its first full week on the service as well as 39.7M in its second full week on Netflix.

CNN’s Jake Tapper Reveals Second Season of ‘United States of Scandal’
Image
Jake Tapper is broadening his definition of American impropriety.

The CNN anchor, who last year offered viewers a different side of his reportage with the documentary series, “United States of Scandal,’ will return for a second season starting March 9, still looking at political malfeasance but examining other areas as well.

“Last year we did a lot of D.C. politics and a lot of sex scandals,” Tapper notes during an interview. For the show’s next cycle, “we really tried to expand our aperture and look more widely at the American mosaic of sports and pop culture and business, and I think people will like it.”

“Scandal” is one of several CNN efforts to carry on with documentary programming despite cost pressures. Under Jeff Zucker, who ran CNN for a decade, the network built a new business in non-fiction programming that gave rise to celebrated travelogue programs from Anthony Bourdain...

Reality TV Producers Urge Buyers To Be Braver & Bolder With Bigger Budgets In 2025
Image
It’s been a weird year for the unscripted television business.

Networks and streamers have been greenlighting fewer shows and producers are struggling, with numerous mid-size companies closing and layoffs across the sector and global outsourcing and budget issues becoming major talking points with the reality industry.

Travis Kelce became a game show host, Alec Baldwin started filming a TLC reality series and Colin Jost is hosting a Jeopardy! spinoff.

Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan have a new singing competition at CBS, which also is developing a new cooking show with Padma Lakshmi. Hulu breathed new life into reality with Mormon wives, Netflix is going full Willy Wonka, American Gladiators is returning, shows like The Traitors and The Floor are being renewed at quite the clip, and Meghan Markle still is getting attention at Netflix.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Documentary Series
Image
Nine years after “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” won the Emmy for Best Documentary Series, its previously unplanned second season is up for the same award. Unlike last time when it stood out as the only crime series in its lineup, it is now joined in that regard by both “Telemarketers” and “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”

Unlike most Primetime Emmys, Best Documentary Series is a non-competitive area award that is bestowed upon any nominee that earns the approval of 90% of the members of the TV academy’s documentary peer group. This means that the five programs in the 2024 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, if no nominees hit said 90% threshold, only the highest-rated one will win.

Dawn Porter’s Luther Vandross Documentary ‘Never Too Much’ Acquired by CNN Films and OWN
Image
Dawn Porter’s documentary about R&b icon Luther Vandross, “Luther: Never Too Much,” has been acquired by CNN Films in partnership with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), IndieWire can reveal exclusively.

The documentary film, which first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will debut in 2025 first on television on CNN and OWN before it lands on Max.

The acquisition is encouraging news for CNN Films, which back in 2022 under former boss Chris Licht scaled back on its original documentary films. The brand moved away from acquisitions or commissioning projects and opted instead for newsy, quick turnaround docs produced in-house.

But CNN Films also partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios on this fall’s release of “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” so the two acquisitions, both from this year’s Sundance, is a positive step forward for the documentary brand.

“Luther: Never Too Much” chronicles the story of a vocal virtuoso,...
